American Modern

New Century. A new era, a new style. A unique way of combining traditional and modern, elegant and casual, bold and delicate, in

designs for modern life. At over 125 pieces, Thomas O’Brien’s collection for Century

includes many types of furniture, from upholstery to handcrafted wood and metalwork, for every room of the home. In style it is just as ambitious and interesting. There are purely handsome French and Scandinavian modern inspirations, but also the world of his-

torical English forms, and the glamour of the American skyscraper age in between. All of these influences are refined and recom-bined through the ways that Thomas thinks about vintage and

modern living. Some of them are dressy. Some are casual. Every-thing has an essential American elegance that makes the design

lasting.

A Fashionable Home This lifestyle is all about a fearless, confident woman, who is aware of trends but does not care to be trendy. She embraces color but uses it as punctuations in her

fashion and her home. We began with gold as an undertone, and then layered in black & white with pops of unexpected color. Pink

leather on chairs playfully echoes a handbag or pair of heels, while a bold new animal textile creates a Diane

von Furstenburg moment, an element of surprise. At the root of high fashion is this story of things made by hand. So too is that story at the heart of furniture.

Our muse understands craftsmanship and decorates her home purposefully and artfully, to showcase its beauty.

The Softer Side of Tuscan From California to Florida the Tuscan or Mediterranean

style of homes has continued to grow in new home builds. Indeed this lifestyle and décor is present across the coun-try and represents a large number of consumers romanced by the idea of slow cooked meals, sun-drenched vistas,

and life lived more thoughtfully and slowly. Playing on this entrenched style, Century washes a mix of forms in softer hues of blue grays and neutrals. Combining highly carved pieces with cleaner forms and keeping finishes light and airy, this lifestyle feels fresh and modern, soft and femi-

nine, comfortable and at home.

Classically Chic This is not your mother’s traditional! Indeed, this lifestyle is all

about embracing classics in a new way. There is a laid back sensi-bility about these rooms despite the classic elements. Traditional chinoiserie prints are updated in large format, bold black & white tones, and the use of multiple related but not matching prints also breaks up the seriousness of the rooms. A shapely black leather

chair is given a softer base with a white finish. Cases are painted in classic black and white lacquers. Pink textiles are the accent color, adding a flirty and feminine touch to an otherwise black and white

landscape.

The High Life is a state of mind. It is a return to what is natural, but with a mod-ern sensibility. Casual but chic, it is a mix of high and low. Natural materials and

organic looking patterns. This design aesthetic beckons to our tactile senses, urging us to touch and feel. At once familiar, these textures and patterns speak to us. They are subtle reminders of the beauty in our world. Drier finishes and unexpected materials give a soul to newer pieces making them feel at once cur-rent and fresh. Rooms feel gathered and curated, but not intentional. Nothing is too perfect or arranged and as a result you want to linger. This purposeful mix is

comfortable and easy to live with, and that’s why we love a the high life.

These rooms represent a softer, more elegant transitional lifestyle. It is more formal, dressed up and sophisticated than Classically Chic, but more modern in sensibility than what we typically think of as “Elegant décor”. Our muse is an avid art collector, traveler and foodie who calls urban

spaces home enjoying the ease of city life. For that reason the scale of her furnishings is important, needing to work within her Pied-a-Terre. The richness of yellow, this time in Saffron, drove the color story. We grounded it with a warm gray to soften the room. The textiles play a

subtle role in defining the space, in particular the over scaled damask is a fresh version of a classic.
