04 July: Higgs Seminar (1)

ATLAS and CMS both announce a 5 sigma significance for a boson at around 125 GeV– Compatible with the Higgs boson

LHC

P-p run extended until 18 December Heavy ions to start 16 January for three weeks Current data rate to tape: 1 PB/week

– 1.5…2 GB/s out of CERN, 10 GB/s total– Expected total in 2012: 30 PB… twice as much as

designed– Impact on experiments’ resource needs

Computing Facilities (CF)

Wigner Budapest (host for remote T0) progressing well, on schedule– Contracts for 2 x 100 Gb/s links placed– Server delivery starts beginning 2013

CC upgrade (Barn): more or less on track– Issue with piping: significant fraction of welds bad– Power cut in June by technician doing the wrong thing– In addition: toilets/showers being renovated, coffee

corner being refurbished, outside emergency stairs being fitted

SLC4 servers retired

Collaboration and Information Services (CIS)

Vidyo rollout continues– Clients for all desktops and mobile devices exist

Linux in good shape now– ATLAS migration well advanced– CMS just starting– As of 1st Jan 2013, EVO quick launch config will be

removed from conference room PCs– Being considered as replacement for MyTeamWork– SIP and Skype gateways coming

Page 7: CERN Site Report

Communication Systems (CS)

EDUROAM– CERN users with certificate can log in abroad– EDUROAM at CERN being prepared (requires access

points supporting broadcasting a second SSID) TETRA project (radio for fire brigade) progressing

well, expected to be ready by start LS1 MyTeamWork: stopped working with latest patches

of IE and FF

Database Services (DB)

Oracle: Migration to 11g complete– CERN participates in 12c beta programme

Database-On-Demand service: some 30 DBs– Mostly MySQL, some Oracle

Oracle licence re-negotiation difficult Netapp about to join OpenLab as a contributor

Data and Storage Services (DSS)

Backup (TSM) moving from complex hardware RAID configuration to simple scheme; performance gain: 38%

Operating Systems and Infrastructure Services (OIS) (1)

Becoming more aggressive about retiring Windows XP by end of 2012 (except online teams)

Mac support– Same team as for Windows desktop support– Can synchronise home directories with DFS– Can use CERN password– Common anti-virus (available for Linux as well)– Standard machine configurations easy to order

OpenAFS client for Windows packaged, now optional

Licensing: negotiating with RedHat

Page 11: CERN Site Report

Operating Systems and Infrastructure Services (OIS) (2)

New SSO deployed– Strong authentication (smartcards, SMS one-time-

passwords, Yubikeys)– Alternate authentication: Facebook, Live, Google, Twitter,

OpenID– Federations being tested (BNL, INFN)– Classes: CERN registered, CERN trusted, HEP trusted

etc. Web services

– Short URL service: added web analytics (Piwik)

Page 12: CERN Site Report

Platform and Engineering Services (PES) (1)

Batch services: Running on about 35’000 physical cores– Some hiccups leading to temporary unavailability or long

response times Sometimes related with high query loads

– New contract in place, significantly higher ceiling of number of licences

– In parallel, investigations about potential alternatives in context of AI

– Accounting rework finished CVMFS: Migration of Stratum-0 release nodes to

CERN-IT completed Engineering services

– Considerations about longer-term CAD future: Catia V6?– Matlab: finally licence issues sorted out

Platform and Engineering Services (PES) (2)

BOINC: 2 projects – Sixtrack (classic) and Test4Theory (Virtualbox and CERNVM)– Sixtrack with many more volunteers after July 4th, aggregate

performance up to 40 TFLOPS Twiki upgraded to 5.1.1, installed GNUplot and JIRA

plugins Issue tracking based on Jira: 50 projects in central

instance, added Crucible and Fisheye– More in other instances migrated to central infrastructure– Savannah migration to Jira in early phase

Version control services– CVS: being phased out, stop in 2013– SVN: Main workhorse, 1’173 repositories, 50’000

commits/month– GIT pilot being set up, targeting GA in 1Q2013

Computer Security

Data classification policy– Public, internal, restricted, sensitive– Support already implemented in Indico and DFS

Clarifying eligibility of obtaining a CERN account– Staff and users get one by default– Contributors and retirees can get one on request for

specific services– Others can use CERN public services (e.g. CERN

Market)

Service management

Service catalogue reviewed Phasing out legacy databases Implementing new processes, e.g. change

management
