Congratulations to Christina Harrison, the Board’s Public Member, for receiving the AMTA Advocate Award at the national conference in Jacksonville! (Photo on page 3). We are so fortunate to have someone with her expertise and enthusiasm for music therapy working alongside us, and are delighted that AMTA has acknowledged her with this well-deserved award.
At the November conference, CBMT celebrated its 30th
anniversary! There was a presentation on the history of CBMT and a lovely reception for former Board and committee members. And our cupcakes at the booth in the Exhibit Hall were a big hit!
ith this column comes the end of my term of service on the CBMT Board of Directors. It has been a wonderful, challenging, and humbling
experience to be able to serve the profession of music therapy in this way. I will miss the camaraderie of the Board, where I have served as Chair for the past two years, and also the exciting work of the Exam Committee and three Practice Analysis Committees.
There are many people whom I would like to recognize for their service to CBMT. First, I want to thank Corene Hurt-Thaut for her service on the Board, where she was the Exam Committee Liaison, and for her many years as a member of the Exam Committee and later the Chair. Corene and I both came on the Board in 2009 and “learned the ropes” together—where does the time go? Thank you to Lacy Kidwell, who is finishing her term on the Exam Committee and has been serving as Chair. Thank you to Deanna Hanson Abromeit who is finishing her term on the Continuing Education Committee and has served as Chair of that committee. These dedicated volunteers have given countless hours of their time to further the mission of CBMT, and we are grateful.

Christina Harrison Awarded AMTA Advocate Award CBMT Public Member, Christina Harrison, RN, BSN, MS, was awarded the AMTA Advocate Award at the 2013 Conference. This award honors a person who is not a music therapist but who has contributed significantly to the field. Christina
worked closely with Dr. Jayne Standley in developing the Music Therapy Program at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in Tallahassee Florida. Christina is a retired RN, healthcare administrator and committed music therapy advocate. She used her skills to promote the role of music therapists into the professional healthcare team throughout the organization, including NICU, pediatrics, neurology, palliative/end of life care, oncology, special procedures, etc. She is currently completing her second two-year term on the CBMT Board of Directors as the Public Member. We are grateful that even in her retirement she continues to serve the profession of music therapy!

At the conference I was privileged to be an invited guest at the AMTA Board meetings. The two organizations continue to collaborate on the State Recognition initiative and other projects.
The last CBMT Board meeting was held in New York City at the end of October. New York University graciously allowed me to host the meeting there. We have been developing a new mission statement and strategic plan, which will be discussed in a future column. The Board
worked hard and efficiently, which left the evenings free to enjoy some of the sights of the city and take in a Broadway show.
Wendy Woolsey, who joined the Board in 2011, will be the new Chair,
beginning January 2014. The new Board members will be announced in the spring. The next practice analysis, which is the basis for the exam, will begin in February. I encourage everyone to participate when you receive your survey! Your contribution is vital to this process.
As I write this column, the world is mourning the death of former South African President Nelson Mandela and celebrating his incredible achievements. His courage, self-sacrifice, and commitment to justice and dignity for South Africa’s black people inspire us to examine our own lives. While we may not bring peace to an entire nation
as he did, we have chosen a profession that improves the lives of individuals all over the world facing innumerable challenges. As Mandela said, “We can change the world and make it a better place. It is in your hands to make a difference.” Music therapy makes a difference—it is up to each of us to make the world a better place through our service to our clients and our profession.

his year CBMT will commence the sixth Practice Analysis Study to define and measure current
practice in the profession of music therapy. This process assures the public that every five years, in a rapidly growing and changing field such as music therapy, the job description to ensure safe competent provision of services for that given period of time has been refined through a psychometrically sound procedure, and administered through the board certification exam. Look for the Practice Analysis Survey to be emailed to you in April or May. Thank you in advance for completing the survey and helping to assure competent practice in the field of Music Therapy.
The purpose of a national credentialing program is to protect the public by identifying qualified practitioners who are competent to practice in the current given work force environment. Current practice is defined through the specific job tasks that are required of all music therapists to practice safely and competently regardless of the number of years they have practiced or the model under which they are currently practicing. This set of job tasks forms the CBMT Scope of Practice.
Some practitioners may exhibit the minimal competencies necessary to practice while others may have skills and depth of knowledge well beyond those identified tasks. This fact is true of the majority of credentialing programs. Credentialing programs are public protection programs developed to identify safe, competent practice. They are not programs developed to reward education or years of experience and the
process is not intended to identify or measure the education and training of a music therapist.
In accordance with its purpose, the CBMT Scope of Practice is the set of job tasks that have been identified as essential for safe, competent practice by all music therapists in
the current five-year cycle that it represents.
Every five years the CBMT completes a detailed Practice Analysis Study to ensure that the items identified in the Scope of Practice, which are then tested on the CBMT Certification examination, are consistent with current practice in music therapy. The Scope of Practice is the definition of the knowledge and skills required for the field of music therapy, and the product and culmination of a lengthy process known as a Practice Analysis study.

The process is conducted, roughly, as follows:• A broad cross-section of practicing music therapists
is surveyed regarding their current music therapy practice.
• From the survey, a list of objective and observable task statements is developed. These tasks are considered essential for successful music therapy practice. The items are then weighted and grouped into meaningful categories.
• The groupings result in the Scope of Practice document. The weights of various categories determine the percentage of the Examination devoted to each category.
• The entire process is repeated, with a new Scope of Practice generated every five years to accurately reflect current practice.
The Practice Analysis process is conducted by a committee of experts in various areas of music therapy clinical practice. The members of the Practice Analysis Committee are selected by the CBMT for their recognized expertise and collective breadth of knowledge in areas of music therapy practice. The Practice Analysis is coordinated and guided by test development experts at Applied Measurement Professionals who are consultants to the CBMT.
Each item in the CBMT Examination item pool must relate directly to one of the task statements derived from the Scope of Practice. With each new Practice Analysis, the CBMT Examination Committee reviews each test item to ensure that it still reflects current practice and relates to the new listing of task statements. In this way, the CBMT Examination and the Scope of Practice are representative of current music therapy practice.

Wlodarczyk, and Michael Zanders. The time invested and the expertise that
was shared on this project by these board certified music therapists is greatly appreciated.

A 30th Anniversary Reception was held on Friday evening for all current and former CBMT Board and Committee members. The significant contributions of the countless number of volunteers were celebrated and acknowledged.
