STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!

Name: Asma Shmi Level: 6 Hometown: Jizau, Saudi Arabia

Hi Asma, what are some things that you’re interested in? I’m interested in music & art.

What kind of music? I like romantic music. It’s very awesome. An artist I like is Muhammed Abdul.

Is he a famous musician? Yes, very. Also, Talal Medah. They’re from Saudi Arabia. I like another singer from Lebanon; her name is Elssa.

With music, what’s the most important thing to you? The most important things are melody and lyrics.

So, what’s your favorite song? Hobka waja.

What does it mean? It means hurt love. It talks about how you don’t give me attention and how I talk about something, but you don’t care. I love all these songs by Elssa. She’s very romantic.

Why are songs like this significant to you? I feel comfortable and relaxed when I listen to romantic music. I don’t love anyone (she laughs), but it’s nice to listen to.

When do you usually listen to this kind of music? When I go to the beach, I listen to it and relax. It’s peaceful for me.

When life gets tough do you listen to this music? Yeah. Sometimes. And other times, I listen to only instrumental music. When I miss my family, I’ll listen to this and just cry, haha.

If you were to write a song for the world, what would it be about? It would be about family or my parents. There’s a song about mothers in all different languages and it is actually called “All World Languages Say Mother”. When you listen to the song, you experience a deep appreciation for your mother. And then you start to cry. Automatically. All people, children, everyone loves this music.

Mothers are great. Any final thoughts? All people must love their life and obey their parents. And don’t be sad. Always smile and be happy. You only live life one time.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!

Name: Nawaf Al khaldi Country: Saudi Arabia Level: 3

How was your winter break?

I went to San Diego with my friends. We went to SeaWorld for the first time and we also visited the big war ship.

Was it your first time going to San Diego?

Yes it was my first time going there. I recommend people to go there because it has nice weather and clean beaches.

How was your first week this session?

It was good, but we are still used to the vacation and staying up late and sleeping in. It will take some time to get used to school.

What do you like to do during your free time?

I always play soccer with my friends or go to the gym to workout. Just like what I used to do back home.

What do you have planned after you’re done with CESL?

I have to go back home and work in order to start my life. My job there is in the army and they sent us here to learn English. I am definitely learning English here at CESL.

Would you like to say anything to CESL?

I would like to thank everyone here because they made a huge difference in my English skills and I am improving every day.
