PIL Tip of the Week

Finals week is just around the corner. This means it’s time to start studying. It’s important to study effectively and use some test taking strategies if you want to get the best grade possible. Try using some of these tips to prepare for your finals and during your finals.

-‐   Ask what material will be covered and WRITE it down

Most teachers are very clear about what will be on the exam. Ask your teaching what to study, and write down important points and page numbers. This is a great way to make sure you aren’t wasting time on materials that won’t be on the test.

-‐   Create a study guide with a friend

This is a useful way to review your notes. If you are missing any important points you can work with a friend. By re-writing important ideas, you are more likely to remember them during the test. You can even use bright colored markers to make it fun!

-‐   If you don’t know the answer, mark it and come back to it later

During the test, you might come across a question that you just can’t answer. Rather than spending 15 minutes staring at the question, put a star next to it, leave it blank, and come back to it when you have finished the rest of the test.

-‐   Change answers only when you are sure you are wrong

Trust your instincts when you are taking a test. Don’t let your doubts encourage you to change an answer. Only change an answer if you are sure it is wrong.

-‐   Read the directions

Before beginning any section of the test, make sure to read the directions carefully. Also, before you go up to the teacher to ask for help, re-read the directions. Many time the answers to your questions are clearly described in the directions.

GOOD LUCK WITH FINALS!!!

CESL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER !6

Every week we interview two CESL students. If you are willing to be interviewed, talk to the Student

Activities Assistants in the SLC (CESL 212).

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!

Name: Komail Aljafar Country: Saudi Arabia Level: 7

How long have you been in Tucson and how do you like it?

I have been in Tucson for a year and 10 days and I really like it, but if it had more green then it would be perfect. The good thing about it is that there are many big cities close to it such as Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

What do you do in your free time?

Watching Netflix and hangout with my friends going to clubs and having fun.

What shows do you like and are watching now?

I like drama shows such as The Principal, Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul. Breaking Bad is my favorite show ever.

Why did you come to America and how different is it from what you expected it to be?

I came mostly for school. Before I came here, I thought studying here was going to be really hard, and I thought people here were not such party people as they really are—which is still cool for me.

Do you have any messages for CESL?

I would like to thank all the teachers here and I really appreciate all the things they did for me to learn English.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!

Name: Muneer Al Kurashi       Hometown: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Level: Bridge

How is the bridge program? It’s great learning new things in 107. Media lab is also really interesting. I would recommend the bridge to anybody who doesn’t want to do TOEFL or IELTS. CESL helps you get into the university.

What will you do after you finish the bridge program? I will study biomedical engineering at the UA.

How did you know you wanted to do that? I always wanted to study chemical engineering, because I love chemistry so much. But my government suggested I study biomedical engineering, which is close.

Where did you grow up? In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

What was your favorite thing about living there?I really like the soccer club, Ittihad. I would always go to the stadium to support the team growing up. I also really like that the city is filled with people from all over the world, from every civilization. It’s also great because it was close to the Red Sea. Growing up, I would go fishing in the Red Sea at the nearby islands.

If you could travel anywhere in the world for free where would you go and why? I would like to go to Switzerland. I like how it is so green, and I like the beautiful rivers and mountains. It’s so big and natural, like heaven on earth.

Favorite book? My favorite book is Hugo. It’s a French novel about a man who was imprisoned who has a young daughter. It’s a very interesting story.
