Welcome to the August/ September edition of The CF15 Directory,

Well the holidays are finally here; & after such awful weather for the past 2 months, it now appears we have the sun back. Hopefully the lovely weather will stay long enough so that we can all take advantage of the beautiful area we live in. Why not go for walk or a cycle along the Taff Trail, or visit Castell Coch? If you want to go further afield, then the Gower is beautiful & Barry Island has seen a resurgence of popularity over the past few years. If its keeping the little ones occupied, why not have a chat with some friends and plan some play days, take it in turns to go to each other’s houses, and each bring something for a picnic or cooking session? Plan some gardening projects, plant some seeds or build a bird house. My little one is currently fascinated by insects, frogs & birds so we have printed off a poster from the internet, & have been spotting, listing & drawing bugs, birds & other garden creatures, we have had hours of fun & he has been learning too. If all that sounds too energetic, then sit back and relax in your garden; maybe with one of the summer cocktails featured in this edition! The Olympic Games will be a big part of this summer, there has been such negativity around the planning of it & the security fiasco that it has detracted from the greatness that the event should bring. Let’s get behind team GB & wish them all the best! Also why not use the Games as an incentive to get fit! You may not be ready to go for Gold by the end of the summer, but am sure you will be feeling full of energy! It’s also a good thing to use as an example for youngsters. It’s never too early to get children interested in sport. If getting them signed up to a club or team isn’t an option, then get out in the garden and play some sports! This edition sees the usual mix of adverts from local businesses, articles & some recipes. If you haven’t already submitted an article or haven’t yet advertised your business, then why not give me a call? Finally a big thank you to all advertisers, old & new for their support of The CF15 Directory, without you, this magazine would not be possible!

Enjoy your summer.

Best Wishes,

Joanna

Pili Pala Day Nurseries

We can’t believe a year has passed and it will be our one year’s Birthday in August!! So much has happened throughout this first year and we have made some brilliant relationships with our new parents. Currently, the nursery has Olympic fever. All the children and staff are getting very excited about preparations for the nursery’s sports week and the Olympic Games. Following this, the children will be enjoying a week of celebrations and activities to celebrate our First Birthday.

We hope that our second year will be as successful as our first. As a nursery and a company, we are constantly striving to develop and improve our services. Over the next coming year, we are very excited about developing our existing garden area to include veggie planters and a muddy kitchen. We have also begun talks with the forestry commission to develop the second area of our garden (currently unused) to provide a nature learning area for the nursery and the local community!

Update from Cllr Roderick McKerlich

Local Development Plan:

Residents will have read of the major local consequences of this comprehensive plan covering the period 2015-2026 and setting out projected house building among other matters such as new job creation, transport, refuse treatment and a number of other important issues. Th e local headline grabber is the selection of Waterhall as a preferred site which implies about 7500 new house being built in the fi elds between Radyr, St Fagans, Fairwater and Pentrebane. Th ere will be a further development of 2500 new houses near Creigiau.

Clearly these developments will have a major impact on roads, school, health centres and other aspects of infrastructure and residents are expressing huge concern. Th is is being discussed by local councillors and community councils and will, no doubt, be raised at public meetings All residents are invited and urged to participate in these debates in a constructive spirit.

Most people accept that too much alcohol can be bad for you. But do you know how much is too much?

What's recommended?Drinking guidelines have been developed for people over 18 years of age, based on medical advice.

MenIt is recommended that men drink no more than 3 to 4 units of alcohol a day and no more than 21 units over the course of the week.

WomenIt is recommended that women drink no more than 2 to 3 units of alcohol a day and no more than 14 units over the course of the week.Remember, that for each unit you drink over the daily limit, the risk to your health increases. It's important to spread the units throughout the week – you can't “save up” your units for the weekend or a party.

Why not try these delicious nonalcoholic cocktails!

Berry Surprise: Blend 1 cup of strawberries, a cup of pineapple chunks, half a cup of raspberries and a splash of lime cordial together and serve over ice.California Smoothie: Place 7 large strawberries in a container and freeze for an hour. Put 8oz lemon yogurt, half a cup of orange juice and the frozen strawberries in a blender and mix until smooth. Add ice and chopped strawberries to garnish.Capucine: Shake a shot of peppermint cordial and 4 shots of cream in a cocktail shaker, add crushed ice and decorate with grated chocolate.Grapefruit Mojito: Put some fresh mint leaves in the bottom of a glass and then add a generous amount of crushed ice. Stir 2 tablespoons of grapefruit juice with 0.25 teaspoons of honey until the honey is entirely dissolved. Transfer the dissolved honey/grapefruit juice to a cocktail shaker with 4 additional tablespoons of grapefruit juice and give it a good shake with ice. Strain into a tumbler glass and serve.

Autism PuzzlesCharity Registration Received!

We are very excited to share with you our great news! We are now a registered charity. Thank you to everyone that has supported us through the registration process.

The Summer Holidays have started and we will be meeting every Tuesday evening at either Jump in Llanishen or Parc Play on Penarth Road. If you have a child with Autism and would like to join us please contact us for more information.

The amazing volunteers that are climbing Kilimanjaro in 2013 have started training and we will be starting a Trekkers Training Log in the next issue of The CF15 Directory. The Kili Trek Open Day is at Whitchurch Rugby Club on September 29th and Autism Puzzles and Halcyon Training Foundation will be there if you would like to pop along and say hi. More information to follow.

One of our members is a very special little girl aged 5 called Lillie-Eve, she has just won an award for her amazing fundraising work that she does for our charity. She has a younger brother called Archie who has Autism and Lillie-Eve is a great big sister and is always thinking of her next fundraising mission. She raised £450 doing a sponsored walk and is now raising money by planning a sponsored cycle. If you would like to sponsor Lillie-Eve please see the link under her photo opposite.

We celebrated National Carers Week on Sunday 24th June and with Captiva Spa and Sole Sisters our parents /carers had a well-deserved few hours off. It was great to see our members enjoy some “grown up” time and leave for home relaxed and smiling.

If you want any further information on the above or you would like to find out more about Autism Puzzles, please contact us.

Gnostic Institute of Anthropology

If we really want to free ourselves, if seriously we are longing for true happiness, we need to urgently follow the path of the revolution of

consciousnessWhat is Gnosis?Gnosis is the original source of Knowledge, the Initiatic wisdom of the great solar civilizations of Antiquity. It is the essence of all religious and spiritual traditions.

The Great WorkThe GIA provides special methods and systems for each person to realise their full potential.

It is through the method of Intimate Self-observation, developing self-awareness that we are able to conduct a psychological inventory of what we have and what we lack. This is an important foundation of the practical work, which consists of the three factors for the Revolution of the Consciousness: Mystical Death- to die in ourselves, comprehending and eliminating our ego, our defects; Birth- The magnum opus, the Alchemical work, crystallising the Essence and Soul inside of us, Sacrifice- Sacrifice for humanity, delivering the regenerative and synthetic knowledge left by V.M. Samael Aun Weor, of the awakened Masters and ancient cultures.

“Service before Self”

Rotary Club of Cardiff – City of Llandaff(Formerly Llandaff Rotary Club)

Established 1964President: Malcolm Braun

Contact: email: [email protected] Web: llandaffrotary.org

Rotary Clubs across the world entered a new “Rotary Year” on 1st July. For the Llandaff based club our 49th President and his new Officers were installed at the end of June.

With well over a million members, we are part of the world’s largest business community with the opportunity to engage with any of the individuals via their clubs. Important to the continuing development of the voluntary efforts made by Rotarians is the recruitment of new members of all ages and from a background which reflects the make-up of our local community. Full details of the opportunities available are found on the above Web site or by e-mailing the Club Secretary.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH: “All those carrying the Olympic Torch are truly amazing people. To have so many carrying the torch who are involved with Rotary really shows how active and valued Rotary is in the community”. Rotary in Britain & Ireland’s President Burman A BLAST FROM THE PAST: When the Olympics were last hosted in the UK, the Rotary Club of Cardiff was the only one in Cardiff. The BBC TV service, which had been closed for the duration of the Second World War, resumed itself in 1948, just in time to cover the hosting of the London Olympics. The BBC paid £1000 for the rights to broadcast and predicted that”the broadcasting and televising of the London Olympiad will be the biggest operation of its kind that the BBC had undertaken”. Reception was still only available to a limited number of television receivers in London but over 60hours of coverage was transmitted using equipment developed by Sir Isaac Schoenberg’s team during the 1930’s and 1940’s. Over subsequent years, several members of staff from the Llandaff Studios were active supporters of our Rotary Club and we were privileged to visit the facilities from time to time. Commercial TV was yet to be introduced to the UK (Radio Luxemburg could be received but commercial {pirate} radio was still to come). SPEAKERS: Recent contributors have included Professor Couper on “Piracy”, Sir Martin & Lady Evans on “Stem Cell developments and the Nobel Prize ceremony, Lady Roisin Pill on “”The Welsh Livery Guild” and also her career in Education and, an historic perspective of “Piracy in the Caribbean.” Future meetings will include after lunch or evening talks by a range of speakers on topics of broad interest to members and guests. (These Tuesday talks are free to attend – the 2 course meals are competitively priced) – Please contact us via the above web or e-mail addresses to book a place. More detailed information is on the website. © 2012 JA

Method

1. For the grapefruit jelly: Place the grapefruit juice, champagne, split vanilla pod and sugar in a pan and gently bring to boiling point, remove from heat, remove vanilla pod and add soaked gelatine leaves, stir to dissolve.2. Pour the mixture in the bottom of a glass serving dish and place in the fridge for about 3-4 hrs or until it has set. 3. For the almond sponge: Preheat the oven to 200ºC/180ºC fan/400ºF/gas 6 . Grease and line a baking tray.4. Beat the sugar and 3 eggs with an electric mixer until pale and increased in volume, this will take about 5 mins.5. In a separate bowl, beat egg whites to stiff -peak stage and fold into the egg and sugar mixture. Sieve the almonds, fl our and baking powder and gently fold into the eggs. 6. Pour into prepared baking tray and bake for 12-15 mins or until golden and a skewer comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tray.7. For the custard: Place the milk in a pan with the vanilla pod and bring to the boil. Mix the sugar, egg yolks and fl our with an electric mixer until everything combined, thickened and has turned pale. 8. Once the milk has boiled, remove the vanilla pod and pour onto the egg mixture in a steady stream whisking all the time. Return to the heat and stir with a wooden spoon over a moderate heat until the mixture thickens and reaches boiling point. Once gently boiling, continue stirring and cook for a further 2-3 mins. 9. Remove from heat and place in a bowl covered with a layer of cling fi lm on the surface of the custard.10. Once your sponge is completely cool, cut a circle of sponge to place on top of your set jelly. Depending on the size of your serving bowl, use an appropriately-sized plate or base of a cake tin to help you cut a neat circle of sponge.11. Place the cut sponge on top of your set jelly, cut the fresh strawberries in half and place them in a layer on top of your almond sponge. Th en spoon the cold custard on top of the strawberries and smooth to cover. 12. Prepare the mascarpone cream by beating the mascarpone to soft en. Using an electric mixer, whip the cream, icing sugar and vanilla to peak stage and then fold in the soft ened mascarpone. Place this on top of your custard layer and spread to cover the top of your trifl e. 13. Finish by dotting raspberries and strawberries all over the top of the mascarpone cream. Return to the fridge until ready to serve!

Th e Great Outdoors!

Th e Radyr Primary School Nature Trail and Conservation Area were opened on Saturday 25th May by past pupil Rhodri Morgan as part of our annual family barbecue. To refl ect the importance of the Olympic Games, the children passed an Olympic Torch along the Nature Trail to Mr Morgan who lit the ceremonial camp fi re fl ame. Families then enjoyed their barbecue whilst being entertained by the school rock bands who performed hits from the Black Eyed Peas, Jessy J and Bruno Mars.

Th e school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) have worked hard throughout the year raising funds through a variety of fundraising events such as a Sports Evening hosted by rugby stars Jonathan Davies, Tom Shanklin and Ieuan Evans, a Rock Evening hosted by the headteacher’s band, a Christmas Fete, Football Event, Family Disco, Halloween Homebake and Toy Sale, all of which helped us raise our target of £10,000. Th e trail comprises a wooden stage and seating area, a conservation area, ‘dipping pond’ and campfi re. Th e pupils took part in a competition to design a logo for the trail which was then incorporated into the bench designs. Th e new resource will now provide a wealth of opportunity to develop Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship across the school curriculum.

In addition to the trail our caretaker Mr Th omas, parent volunteers and pupils have been working extremely hard to develop our infant and junior allotments and new raised beds around the school. Th e children have planted a range of produce from runner beans through to strawberries and Mr Th omas is currently fi nalising our ‘Pop Bottle Greenhouse’(bottles donated by pupils and parents) which will provide further opportunities for pupils to develop their ‘green fi ngers’. It is hoped that this work, along with the ongoing eff orts of our eco and school council (who recently accompanied BBC Television’s Iolo Williams to Radyr Weir to help launch Welsh Water’s ‘See it, Report it, Stop it’ campaign) will stand us in good stead for assessment towards Green Flag Status in the coming school year.

JA Consultants is a long established business, offering guaranteed, cost effective, solus or shared option distribution services to clients throughout the UK. Established in 1975, the business operates in south Wales.

The company has well qualified and strategically placed professional teams, matching existing and future client expectations to a high standard. Services are designed to compliment your existing marketing strategies. Delivered direct to your potential clients premises, the service can be arranged as either 'solus' or as part of a shared drop. This unrivalled service is available at competitive rates.

We operate to the highest industry standards and as a result have a satisfied network of clients, situated throughout the UK, including universities, colleges, schools, local authorities, health boards and government departments, local, regional and multinational businesses, companies and organisations.

New and existing clients are assured that every effort is made to deliver your business marketing materials safely within an agreed timescale. A high percentage of new clients use us because of dissatisfaction with the low standards of delivery offered by cheap rate individuals or companies who perhaps mix them in with newspapers or other clients’ flyers SO THAT the bundle then becomes identified as spam.“Buyer Beware” is a useful adage to help stamp out dishonest individuals and companies.

Our ratings in terms of client satisfaction are between 90 and 100% (over a five year period and approximately 200 clients).
