CFL535FM — Monochrome Display with Rechargeable Battery The CFL535FM provides a recharge- able NiMH battery pack and charger in place of the dry cells. CFL535FR — Color Display with Re- chargeable Battery The CFL535FR provides a color high- resolution display providing excellent trace separation in dual trace modes. The unit is also powered by a re- chargeable NiMH and includes a bat- tery charger. APPLICATIONS The advanced features of this TDR make it ideal for the demanding appli- cations of cable testing. TELEPHONY The CFL535F TDR provides fast and accurate results when uncovering transmission related problems. The TDR shows a graphic reproduction of the transmission path, identifying the location of the fault. In addition to fault locating, the CFL535F identifies line activity such as taps or branches, load coils and transformers, capacitor networks, splices, water saturation, and crosstalk. Field conditions such as moisture, crimps, twists and similar interference can create “clutter” that obscures small faults on the TDR screen. A single input unit identifies the initial disturbance but may not be able to identify accurately small faults beyond that initial disturbance. The CFL535F provides the features required to find these complex faults. These advanced features provide the ability to: Compare a good pair to a faulty pair and display the difference between the pairs. Eliminate distortion or unwanted re- flections, such as those caused by water in the line. BULLETIN AVTB535F 4/02 AVO INTERNATIONAL IS REGISTERED TO ISO 9001 STANDARD

CFL535F TDRGeneral Purpose Time Domain Reflectometer

DESCRIPTIONThe MEGGER Model CFL535F is an ad-vanced instrument capable of identi-fying a wide range of cable faults usingTime Domain Reflectometry. Narrowpulses of electrical energy are trans-mitted along the cable. The pulse trav-els through the cable at a velocitydetermined by the cable insulation.Changes in characteristic impedanceof the cable will cause the pulse to bereflected which then is displayed onthe instrument.

The CFL535F can be used on any cableconsisting of at least two insulated me-tallic elements, one of which may bethe sheath or shield of the cable. Dualinputs and large graphic display allowa wide range of comparative tests tobe performed between cable pairs orstored traces. The instrument has 15trace memories, which allows previ-ous test results to be displayed. Theincluded download software allowstransfer of the waveform data to acomputer, for analysis and storage forfuture reference.

The instrument can be closely bal-anced to the cable using the balancecontrol or another cable pair, allowinglong lengths of cable to be easilytested. The propagation velocity valuecan be adjusted to match the cable, thus permitting an accurate distancemeasurement to be directly read from

the instrument. To enable a wide rangeof faults be detected, the gain controlis fully adjustable, allowing identifica-tion of minors faults along the entirelength of the cable. The fault positioncan be enhanced and accurately mea-sured using the gain control.

Other setting options include chang-ing the distance units between metersand feet, and changing the propaga-tion velocity units between a ratio andmeters per microsecond.

The CFL535F comes in one of threeconfigurations:

CFL535F — Monochrome DisplayStandardThe CFL535F is the standard configu-ration offering a backlit monochromedisplay and powered by 8 x AA (LR6)batteries.

CFL535FM — Monochrome Displaywith Rechargeable BatteryThe CFL535FM provides a recharge-able NiMH battery pack and charger inplace of the dry cells.

CFL535FR — Color Display with Re-chargeable BatteryThe CFL535FR provides a color high-resolution display providing excellenttrace separation in dual trace modes. The unit is also powered by a re-chargeable NiMH and includes a bat-tery charger.

APPLICATIONSThe advanced features of this TDRmake it ideal for the demanding appli-cations of cable testing.

TELEPHONYThe CFL535F TDR provides fast andaccurate results when uncoveringtransmission related problems. TheTDR shows a graphic reproduction ofthe transmission path, identifying thelocation of the fault. In addition tofault locating, the CFL535F identifiesline activity such as taps or branches, load coils and transformers, capacitornetworks, splices, water saturation, and crosstalk.

Field conditions such as moisture, crimps, twists and similar interferencecan create “clutter” that obscuressmall faults on the TDR screen. Asingle input unit identifies the initialdisturbance but may not be able toidentify accurately small faults beyondthat initial disturbance. The CFL535Fprovides the features required to findthese complex faults. These advancedfeatures provide the ability to:

• Compare a good pair to a faulty pairand display the difference betweenthe pairs.

• Eliminate distortion or unwanted re-flections, such as those caused bywater in the line.

• Locate crosstalk point (i.e., splitsand resplits) by transmitting on onepair and receiving on another.

• Store and reproduce traces as re-quired by corporate procedures us-ing the 15 internal memories.

POWERThe CFL535F is an ideal tool for identi-fying faults on low-voltage powercable. The unit provides low voltage, high frequency pulses making it safeto use at the resident's meter. The unitclearly identifies conditions such asburnouts in aluminum conductors, shorts between phases, various spliceconditions, and transformers. TheCFL535F TDR also saves your utilitylost revenue by accurately identifyingillegal power taps. The built-in voltageprotection allows testing on livepower lines up to 300 V without addi-tional accessories.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS• Backlit LCD (320 x 2560) — the highdefinition LCD enhances trace identifi-cation and aids fault location. Thecolor version of the CFL535F(655535FR) displays each channel in adifferent color, reducing the possibil-ity of confusion between measure-ment channels.

• Intermittent fault mode — any tran-sient reflection, which appears mo-mentarily and disappears, can becaptured and displayed as a perma-nent event on either channel of theTDR for simple and accurate measure-ment.

• FastFind — at the press of a button, this function places the cursor at thefurthest likely event on the displayedtrace, typically the end of the cable oropen/short circuit. Range and gain areautomatically adjusted for optimumdisplay.

• Single and dual cursor modes enabledistance measurement from the startof the cable, between intermediateevents or from the far end of the cable. Both distance from start and distancebetween cursors are displayed simul-taneously.

• Output pulse amplitude control —three levels of pulse amplitude areselectable. By changing the pulse am-plitude, greater control of fault dis-crimination is possible.

• Graphical help menu is accessiblefrom the "Information" key that dis-plays the keyboard layout and keyfunctionality. Select the function keyfor a full description of its function.

• No blocking filter required. Standardsupplied leads for 150 V CAT3 or op-tional fused leads for 300 V CAT3.

• Dual input and output ports providecomparisons of good pair versus badpair measurements. Also, by usingone port as an input and the other asan output, crosstalk problems are lo-cated quickly and easily.

• Extremely lightweight (3.3 lb) forease of use and operator comfort.

• Real-time differential measurementidentifies the difference between agood pair and a bad pair in real time. This is an ideal test for locating inter-mittent problems in a line.

• Balanced input and output portsprovide significant reduction in com-mon mode distortion, an occurrencecommon with twisted pair cables.Traces are clean and easy-to-read.

• IP54 weatherproof enclosure en-sures operation in inclement condi-tions often encountered in the field.

• 15 internal memory positions storeup to 15 traces for future analysis.

• RS-232 interface transfers storedtraces to a printer or PC. Softwarealso available.

• Help menu acts as a guide to TDRfunctions. sample traces for reference.

• Five user selectable output pulsewidths for each range enhances faultlocating especially on extremely close-in faults.

• Trace averaging allows for im-proved fault locating on “noisy” cablesby averaging a number of samples toreduce the effect of intermittent noise.

• Balance control nulls the initialtransmitted pulse to allow the user tosee faults close to the instrument.

• Cursor position display shows therelative location of the cursor on thefull length of the range.
