Mediterranean Piratesfrom the Barbary Coast demanded tribute

from European and American traders.

• Jefferson attacked Tripoli and refused to pay any more tributes.

• Admiral Stephen Decatur was the hero.

Embargo Act (1807)• Frustrated by British impressment and harassment at sea of Americans, the US prohibited trade with all foreign nations.

• However, this hurt American merchants.

The Battle of TippecanoeShawnee chief Tecumseh didn’t think that Indians

should sell their land to the whites. William Harrison provoked an attack and destroyed

Tecumseh’s Indian Confederation.
