SF02: Some Things Old, Some Things NewBY BEN FONG-TORRES

SF02, the artists' seminarformerly known as SF01,takes place May 18-21 inSan Francisco. As with theinaugural gathering lastyear, the focus is on creat-ing and exposing music ofall kinds.

Sponsored by GAVIN andproduced, once again, bylocal music industry veter-ans Bonnie Simmons andQueenie Taylor, SF02 willoffer a long weekend ofworkshops, panels, partiesand-most of all-showcas-es, with more than 200bands doing stints on 25nightclub stages over threenights.

And that's not counting asinger -songwriter night atthe Hotel Utah, whichshould account for another15 to 20 performers, a spo-ken -word night, daytimeperformances at SF02 head-quarters-the downtownPress Club-and the usualsurprises. (Simmons, Taylor, and club managers are wad-ing through piles of submit-ted tapes. Artists, they

remind, are not required toregister at SF02 in order toplay showcases.)

But for the participatingartists (most of themunsigned), managers,

agents, A&R people, pro-moters, publishers, promot-ers, attorneys, and mediatypes, the shows are onlypart of the show.

"SFO is for artists, to getthem some attention fromrecord companies and otherconcerned parties, but alsoto educate artists in some ofthe business dealings thatthey're going to have to go

W1VMS PromotionsDirector IndictedIn the ongoing investigation of a station sabotage gone awry,a grand jury in Cleveland has reportedly indicted the promo-tions director of WMMS/FM for her alleged role in the cuttingwires at a Howard Stern remote on rival WNCX last June, knocking the broadcast off the air.

Heidi Kramer was slapped with five counts, according tothe Cleveland Plain Dealer, and the charges include forginga document to help another person get press credentials tothe Stern remote and with "disrupting public service" at anearlier WNCX event-a WNCX remote from a Pink Floydconcert last May.

Former WMMS engineer Bill Alford pled guilty lastSeptember to a "disrupting" charge and offered assistance inthe investigation, which prosecutors had promised to widen.

Carl Hirsch of WMMS owners OmniAmerica, which hadearlier claimed that Alford "acted on his own," dismissed thelatest charges, saying prosecutor Craig Weintraub is "wastingthe taxpayers' money on something that is not important."

through. So the daytimemeetings are for the artists, too, and it makes thosemeetings 100 percent bet-ter," says Simmons, a veter-an programmer and DJ (cur-rently at KPFA/FM-Berkeley)as well as audio director forColossal Pictures, which isbuilding the main exhibitsfor the Rock and Roll Hall ofFame and Museum.

In fact, one new work-shop this year is the directresult of input from record-ing artist Debora Iyall, whosuggested an all -artists ses-sion. With lyall (formerly ofRomeo Void) among thefacilitators, the meeting-before the first evening ofnightclub showcases-willbe open to artists only.Simmons explains: "This isso they'll all feel comfortableexpressing or venting theirconcerns."

Another modification, with the artist in mind, is thedemo tape -critiquing panel. This year, there'll be threesessions: one for urban/hip-hop, one for singer -song-writers in the A3/Americanaarena, and one for pop -rock -alternative music.

In short, "What workedlast year stays. What didn't,doesn't," says Taylor, a vet-eran of Bill Graham Presentswho is producer of thisyear's mammoth Black andWhite Ball, the music festi-val that benefits the SanFrancisco Symphony.

Band manager HerbieHerbert worked last year asa member of a panel, and hedid so well that he immedi-ately agreed to an encore. This year, he'll sit for a one-on-one.

Herbert's session, alongwith a keynoter, a dozenpanels, and exhibits, willtake place not at a sprawl-ing hotel, but at the venera-ble Press Club. SaysSimmons: "One of the greatthings about SF01 being atthe Press Club was seeing

neophytes being able towalk up to an establishedmanager or A&R person inthe bar and feeling comfort-able talking to them, and itdidn't develop into one of

F

those nightmare schmoozesessions, and peopleweren't shaking your handand looking over yourshoulder."

Outside the Press Club, special events include theBMI Showcase, transplantedfrom the annual GAVIN

Seminar. Produced by theLos Angeles office of BMIwith local BMI rep NadineCondon, the showcase willpresent six or seven SF02bands and others (not nec-essarily BMI-affiliated artists)at the Paradise Lounge inthe South of Market.

Another feature fromSF01-"Rock Jeopardy"-returns. (It was so success-ful, says Taylor andSimmons, that they wererecruited to do a version forthe upcoming SXSW inAustin.)

Also returning: the "RockWalk" to and past variousrock and roll landmarks inthe city. This year, the walkwill be more of a run, as itcoincides with the annualBay -to -Breakers marathonrun that turns various citystreets into a blend offootrace track and MardiGras costumery. The pro-ducers of the race haveinvited SF02 to providemusic at various stagesalong the race route, and

will tell the thousands ofrunners about SF02 show-cases. As for the Rock Walk:"We'll walk as far as wecan," says Taylor, who saidhistorian/tour guide LesliePepin may only be able toslow down enough to pointvaguely in the direction of,say, the Haight-Ashbury.

If it sounds like fun, it willbe. As Taylor recalled aboutlast year's effort: "We hadthe idea of a music businesssummer camp. And that'swhat it was: a lot of learn-ing, interspersed with a lotof fun."

Registration is $150 untilMay 10; $175 after that dateand at the door. For infor-mation on all aspects ofSF02, call (415) 495-3200.

Actually, a radio trade magazine-not this one-almost beat most ofthe big -name publications to thestory, until the issue, which hadgone to press, was embargoed bythe publisher. The 900 issues thatgot sent out were taken back. I

You can imagine that I have mixedfeelings about all this. Jann and I goback to the beginnings of RollingStone, my first story appeared in thethen -newspaper's eighth issue, inthe spring of 1968. We were born

Explaining the storyit ran in late February, Paul Palmer,an editor there, used the same ratio-nale the Wall Street Journal wouldto support its March 3 article: Thestory, he said, was relevant to thepossible breakup of Wenner's maga-zine company (a $200 million orga-nization shared by Jann and JaneWenner).

I still feel like it's no one's busi-ness but his own, even though thereare some undeniable realities: thatJann is a high -profile, public figure;that the potential rending of WennerMedia (originally named StraightArrow Publishers, with a boy scoutas a logo) is a valid news story.

And, finally, he's a journalist who'sat the heart of a story, but who triedto squelch it. It was a tactic that wasborne of despair and bound to fail.

Thus, my mixed emotions. I feelsad for what Jann-and Jane-aregoing through. I wish them well, onall levels. In a recent conversationwith a fellow former Rolling Stoner,I heard that Jann has never beenhappier. For that, I'm glad, just as Iam for any friend who finds love inan increasingly cautious, distantworld. Bay Area Awards: AJourney into the Past

The Bay Area Music Awards(the Bammies), created 18years ago by BAMMagazine, had a relativelylow-key ceremony lastweek. Theshow -end-ing jam, usually a

compellingmix of musi-cal person-alities andstyles, wasdominated by former mem-bers of Journey, while thenew generation, includingCounting Crows, Green Dayand Rancid, stayed off stageand, for the most part, awayfrom the event (althoughboth the Crows and Green

Day sent representatives-Mike Dirnt of Green Dayand Matt Malley of theCrows).

Still, Neil Young, ChrisIsaak, Carlos Santana, BookerT. Jones, Eric Martin,Penelope Houston, and theJourney -men (Neil Schon andJonathan Cain) were there, along with Ramblin' JackElliot (who hooked up musi-cally with John WesleyHarding), and Linda Perry of4 Non Blondes, who rockedwith Stone Fox. To Sell Music, They reTaking it to the Street

BY DAVID BERAN

A new record company is hitting the streets to hear what peo-ple think of their music.

Street Level Records, based in Beverly Hills, disperses salespeople armed with boom boxes to places where crowdsgather and offers people a chance to hear music before theybuy it. Interested parties invest $10 in a CD or $8 for a cas-sette, then fill out response cards or call a 1-800 number togive feedback on tracks they think should go to radio.

Street Level is the brainchild of Alexander Williams and for-mer MCA Records presi-dent Robert Siner. Williamsbelieves that all recordlabels should have market-ing companies. "Our longterm goal is to be like aminor league team to abaseball's major leagueteam," he says.

Street Level is mainlyfocused on the rap/hip hop format, and is using do-it-your-self starters as models. Williams points out that artists such asNWA, MC Hammer and Magic Mike sold tapes before theyhad record deals. "We've been called the Afro Amway, andwithin two weeks we can tell whether something works ornot," he says.

Street Level's first release, Street Rap, Volume 1, spotlightsunsigned talent, and the idea is to prove to the majors thatsomething is good before they invest in it. Obeah's Posse'sR&B/rap song "Fat Girls" is one example of a Street Leveltrack that's earned tremendous reviews.

Future compilations planned are Street Rock, Street Jazzand Street R&B, and Street Level plans to branch out to SanDiego and San Francisco. Look for a uniformed Street Levelsalesperson on a street near you.

Five years ago, the Rocket,a weekly paper in Seattle, polled critics on the mostimportant records ever tocome from the Northwest, and the Kingsmen's "LouieLouie" came out on top.

Recently, the paper con-ducted a new poll, andNirvana's Nevermind wonout, followed by the Sonics'Here Are the Sonics andNirvana's debut album.Bleach.

mall Market Success" goes tropi-cal this week as we travel to our50th state, Hawaii, and theisland of Kauai. Late in 1992,Hurricane Iniki tore apart this

beautiful and placid island. Top 40station KONG ended up being theumbilical cord for the island as itprovided communication with theoutside world by relaying messagesfrom relatives and friends on themainland and by providing supplies. As a result, KONG has become thenumber one station on the island, posting its most impressive ratingsever last month. Telling us all aboutthe station is program director EdKanoi.

First off, how in the heck do youmanage to get up and go to workeveryday? It can be difficult, but my passionfor radio keeps me going everyday. It's really just like anyone else hav-ing the drive and intensity for whatthey do. Radio to me is the best, andI consider myself fortunate to be apart of a great station like KONG.How do you compare KONG to a typi-cal mainland station? The similarities equal the amount ofdifferences. We are a true Top 40that can be put up against any Top40 in the country, despite our loca-tion and culturally intensive market. However, we lean more heavilytoward our local product than yourtypical Top 40 station. Our marketdemands it. As far as our approach,we are by far and away more laidback than most. We don't have thescreaming jocks or outrageous lin-ers/sweepers. It just wouldn't fit

ith the staticn's or island's tastes.Do the nuances of your "culture spe-cific" market reflect upon your styleof programming? As far as how we approach the

overall programming, not really. There are certain facets of program-ming that are applicable across theboard. We do however keep in veryclose tune to what our market'sneeds are. Most Top 40s follow amore generic attitude toward theirlisteners where as we continuallystrive towards determining who theyare and what they really want. It'sjust a matter of being a part of yourmarket rather than an outsider look-ing in.

So, it's safe to say that specialtyshows and local music play a largerole in constituting your station'smix.Absolutely. We play a local artistevery hour and a half, or more.Friday afternoons we run AlohaFriday, which is a specialty showfeaturing all Hawaiian music.Weekends are when we pretty much

leave the Top 40 format on the backburner and run a lot of traditionalmusic. On Saturday nights we air areggae show which, by the way, ishugely successful. During the weekwe play what we call Jawanantracks, a hybrid of native Hawaiianand Jamaican music. We basicallyjust determined local tastes, and pro-grammed for them. This doesn'tmean that we ignore Top 40, we justmix in the right amount of localmusic to keep the market satisfied. What is the balance of guts versusresearch for programming your sta-tion?At KONG we lean more towards thegut approach. As with any smallmarket, we don't have access to alot of research. We do take periodictrips to retail, but the primary sourceof information comes from the streetresearch. Physically, asking listenerswhat is appealing and what isn'tworks the best for us. Because ofour diverse demo, we daypart heavi-ly. With a listening population of42,000 and 60 -plus percent of thattuning into KONG, it's the only wayto keep those 25,200 people happy. How much label support do youreceive? It's comparable to any other smallmarket. There are a few labels whoshine for us, and a few who don't.We scratch and dig like anyone else;it's the nature of small markets. Ourbiggest problem is lag time.Overnight to us means two days, which translates into being unfortu-nately late on most added records!Do you see a continuing trend ofgrowth within the format?I believe in Top 40. As with mostformats, it goes in waves and youhave to be able to ride them.Changes constantly occur, as withthe strength of alternative, and youhave to be open to it. Working witha station that gives you the freedomto ride with change is the key to thatstation's success, regardless of whoprograms it. I'd say the fuure iswide open for the format, and hope-fully we can adapt to what is com-ing.

Inside Top 40Not that many years ago there wassuch a thing as local live television.Nowadays local live TV meansnews, period. When KTVU, theFox affiliate in the San FranciscoRay Area decided to go head -to -head against NBC, CBS and ABC'smorning TV fare many thoughtthey'd never he able to compete.Now. several years later, MAT isheating all three. The same is truein Los Angeles with Fox's KITV.

That seems to make a case for thepower of localization, yet eachweek a few more radio stationsdecide to broadcast one of a grow-ing number of the morning showsavailable via satellite. Is this simplya new vehicle or a trend radioneeds to he way wary of?Consultant and industry observerGarry Wall believes radio can't winthe immediacy war. We can't evenwin the local war anymore, but wecan win the compelling war," hesays. "A certain number of syndicat-ed shows are probably inevitable enthe marketplace.

"From a business standpoint, it'sprobably a good idea to considersyndication if you're not even goingto be in a competitive situation oth-erwise." I lowever. Wall doesn't rec-ommend syndication simply as amethod to manage expenses. It'sgotten out of hand," he says.Every month we're seeing record

billings. This is a time when we canafford to take some chances andwhat are we doing? Squeezing theprogramming budget."

Consultant Bill Richards placesthe new crop of shows under thesame heading as duopolies. "It's allpart of the changing face of radio."he sat s. "When you're dealing with

ratirli,ti, in inrrning drive. which areso iCtilt to conic by and whichmean so much, I think you'll seethis trend continue." I lowever, ifgiven a choice, Richards says, "If Icould find someone local who'sgreat, I'd do that in a heartbeatabsolutely!"

Forced to choose between in-house or syndication, consultantGuy Zapoleon also prefers localtalent. "Simeone doing somethingfor my community means more tome than a very good nationalshow." he says. But ZapoleonIscrystal ball shows a similar picturedeveloping, forcing him to admit,"You're going to see many more ofthese satellite -delivered morningshows." However when asked howmany will succeed, Zapoleon says,"The top two or three, but alterthat. it'll be tough for any others tobeat a local morning show." 11ealso says proximity to the cityhelps a show succeed and for areason he can't explain, Zapoleonthinks it's more difficult for Top 40stations than rock outlets to suc-ceed with out-of-town talent.

However. in his travels, Zapoleonsees a lot of people looking forways to cut costs. -They're doingthings like eliminating overnightpositions." he says. "If they couldfigure out a way to pay SO percentof what they used to pay for. aftergetting a satellite feed set up (manyof which are free to the client), Ithink they'll do it." Asked to assesslongterm costs Zapoleon comments,"It's going to bite us in the ass. Itwill hurt the development of talentjust like liner cards did in the '70s.Thank God though there are a lotof bright programmers out there. -

WHAT'S THE "B" STAND FOR?

"I have to change it every year

and this year it stands for

'billions' because that's what I'm

trying to make."

MUSICAL INFLUENCES' "MUSIC

from the '50s, '60s and '70s-it reminds me of when I was

more innocent, happy and free."

When

asked about his likes and

dislikes, Stevie had this to say:

"I'm into things that are

productive, healthy and

progressive. The world is so

complex that I wish people and

especially today's youth would

spend less time having fun, not

that fun isn't important, but they

should really think more about

their life and put more thought

into their future."

"When I have time to myself, I try

to kiss my five children."

"When I went to number one in

1990 with 'Because I Love You.' I

was at the top for five weeks."

STEVIE B ON "DREAM ABOUT

You : "It's a very human song

that touches people in the heart.

You cannot have lived life

without learning to let those you

love go."

Wealso intend to take a critical look atour country's conservative politicalclimate and its potential effects onthe future progress of the Blackcommunity." Among the featuredprograms on "Slave Day" (March 19)is a show on affirmative action fromthe perspective of the enslaved...KMEL's Davey D generated greatdiscussion on the affirmative actionissue on his talk show for the hip -hop generation, Street Knowledge. He had a diverse group of guests, including Rev. Jesse Jackson, whopointed out that affirmative action isabout equity and equal access toopportunity, not reverse discrimina-tion (which, by the way does notexist). I would definitely encourageall GAVIN reporters to keep your lis-teners abreast of this importantissue, and let your audiences knowthat their letters and calls to repre-sentatives and votes make a differ-ence...KBXX's Madd Hatta hasreleased an album that is selling

Martin Page and Bob Seger meet -up in

New Orleans at the Gavin Seminar and

pose for a two-fer.

Three singles dominate the chart atthe moment. At the top, BonnieRaitt - You Got It" gets it. Only:An en stations out of 239 are not yeton it, while its spins are now com-fortably above the 6,000 mark.Martin Page's "In The House ofStone and Light" picks up another143 spins and should easily move toat least #2 next issue, replacing thespiralling downward Eagles single,"Love Will Keep Us Alive." Page'ssingle is the only track in the entireformat to get an average above 28spins per week per playing station. Not bad for a song that's beenplayed since last summer. It's thatgood!

The HOTTEST track, for the thirdstraight week, is Elton John's"Believe." It took on another 1,346spins to win the Spincrease catego-ry. Annie Lennox's "No More 'ILove You's'" is next up inSpincreases with a mere 568. Annie'sno slouch, though, as she hasmoved upward from #37 to #21 inthe past two issues, with better than1,200 spincreases.

Joe Cocker, Anita Baker. Nanci Griffith, Keiko Matsui, Simple

In the two weeks since it wasRECORD TO WATCH, Jimmy Cliff(above) and Lebo M's "HakunaMatata" has gone from CHART -BOUND to #27 on the chart. In thattime it has picked up 61 ADDSincluding 27 this week from KKLI,KVLY, WGMT, WKST, WJBR andKTWN.

New ReleasesJANN ARDEN"Can I Be Your Girl" (AIM)This is a great production of a veryinspirational song. Jann Arden hasbeen just about to happen in A/Cmore than once, but we don't seehow she can miss with such a strongsong as this. It was one of the high-est -rated tracks at this year's A/CJukebox Jury.BEN TAYLORI Will (Giant)Remember his cameo on CarlySimon's newest album? That perfor-mance led to this-his first single ina featured position in a potentiallystrong new movie, Bye Bye Love. Ifhe wanted to distance himself fromhis famous father (James Taylor) hewouldn't have sung such an easygo-ing, acoustic confection like this. Itamazing how much he sounds likedad.

BASSIST JEFF LEONARD

ON: "We both compose, but

while I'm the bass player, I do

the majority of the synth

playing and programming,

whether it's coming up with the

sonic conceptions or the actual

parts. Chris James, my partner,

is a fine pianist, so he's always

going to play the piano parts

and the more technical

keyboard things."

"A lot of these songs are

pretty dense as far as the

amount of musical information

and the different parts we

played. We tried not to make it

seem so by bringing elements

in and out very slowly. There's

more happening than what

might appear on first listen,

but I don't think the listener

will feel bombarded with too

much data."

"The second record is a much

more rhythmic album with more

live instrumentation, a natural

evolution for us. I think

'Northern Lights' and

'Watermark' have the most

immediate (airplay) appeal. The

most improvisational song on

the record is 'Nocturne,' where

there's a brief sax solo,

followed by a stretch where

the saxophonist and my

fretless bass are trading ideas

back and forth."

Jan/A2 N111111 ReleasesSTEPS AHEADVIBE (NYC)Through the last couple of decades, vibist Mike Mainieri's Steps Ahead hasserved as a valuable training outpostfor musicians who have become someof today's top solo artists in both jazzand adult alternative. A few namesthat spring to mind are Eliane Elias,Warren Bernhardt, Michael Brecker,Don Grolnick, Peter Erskine andEddie Gomez. It's been almost twoand a half years since we've had anew record from the group, and theappropriately -titled Vibe delivers, well, cool vibes. Dore Steinberg of KKSFhips us to a couple of hip tracks. Theopening "Buzz" is an "MI Blues"melody turned sideways and harmoni-cally cooks for jazz radio. On the A2front, Steinberg swears by the loopydrum grooves of the title cut. VictorBailey contributes a percolating bassrhythm and Adam Holzman tosses ina upbeat organ part as Mainieri andsoprano saxophonist Donny McCaslinperform unison melody lines beforeorbiting into eight -bar trade-offs.

STRAIGHT AHEADDANCE OF THE FOREST RAIN

(ATLANTIC)Straight Ahead has gone from beingan all -female quintet to an all -femalequartet. Gone is violinist ReginaCarter, who should resurface later as asolo artist. Meanwhile, the group iden-tity pushes forward. Most of Dance OfThe Forest Rain's swing quotientcomes through Marion Hayden'swalking acoustic bass riffs. Some ofthe more driving numbers from theprevious two CDs are replaced withmore mood -oriented material that'saccented by lots of background vocalsand world influences like samba andisland. In absence of Carter's violin, guest acoustic guitarist Fareed Haguesupplies some Moorish, classical guitarfills. On our favorite piece, Haydenperforms a Love Supreme -styled bassline on the pastoral yet studied"Mangoes," as pianist Orr tosses in afew Latin counter rhythms to give thepiece some added spice.RAY BROWNSOME OF MY BEST FRIENDS

ARE...THE PIANO PLAYERS (TELARC)Bassist Ray Brown has become especially productive on the jazz chartsince signing with Telarc; so much sothat he's become an automatic jazzchartbuster. One of three releases outin the last 18 months, Brown's latest, satirically titled Some Of My BestFriends Are...The Piano Players, seemspoised to continue the chart -toppingways of Bacs Face and Don't GetSassy. Drummer Lewis Nash providesessential support as Dr. Brown ushersin five different pianists to presenttheir bopping testimony. The ivory

lineup ranges from young and studied(Benny Green and Geoff Keezer) toolder and more musically conversa-tional (Oscar Peterson and AhmadJamal). In fact, Peterson and Brownhave spent half a century off and onplaying gigs together. Nash is a mon-ster with the brushes on "Lover" onwhich Green dons his best BudPowell -styled complex lines.Ironically, young'un Keezer deliversthe swingin'est body blows on hislone contribution, "Close Your Eyes,"clearly the Z'men's pick of the litter. While the cameos are numerous, thespotlight is fixed squarely on Brown. He hambones his way through eachtune as each pianist goes one-on-onewith his dominant acoustic bass per-sonality. Perhaps part of Brown's cur-rent chart appeal is that his sessionsalways have an imaginative motif ormission, in this case, a timely anddiverse salute to the grand tradition ofthe jazz grand piano.BUCK HILLIMPULSE (MUSE)ut the most recent batch of new Musereleases, Buck Hill's Impulse, hisfourth for the label, is our pick toclick. Start with the soulful McCoyTyner ballad, "You Taught My HeartTo Sing," and see if it doesn't spark anencore. Sixty-seven year old Hill hasplayed professionally since 1943, andhe's one of many saxophonists whohave labored under the title "talentdeserving wider recognition." For thisrecording date Hill relied on his owntrio from his native Washington D.C.For sheer swing and blatant finger -snapping fun, proceed straight to"Sweet Georgia Brown." Simmeringback to sultry ballad form, unwind tothe cinematic -like, sentimental strainsof "How Do You Keep The MusicPlaying."

ALLEN FARNHAMQUARTETTHE COMMON THREAD (CONCORD)As is u,[ Illy the case, pianist AllenFarnham's newest recording is makinga healthy climb up the GAVIN jazzchart. The Common Thread, his thirdConcord release, highlights four newtrio recordings plus a solo piano pieceand four more tunes cut with saxo-phonist Joe Lovano back in 1986.Farnham's rhythm section, JameyHaddad on drums and Drew Gress onbass, join him on both the older andnewer recordings. Apparently, "thecommon thread" is that Farnham,Haddad and Lovano all hail fromCleveland, while Gless migrated toNew York in 1984, the same year asAllen. In an about-face fromFamham's rousing backup work onSusannah McCorkle's delightful FromBroadway To Bebop, The CommonThread is much more introspectiveand Bill Evans -like. Lots of eveningshade and darker hues punctuate thiscrop of compositions.

INFLUENCES: "Outside of

listening to jazz in college and

high school, I'm not that up on

instrumental music. I usually

gravitate much more towards

singers. Bryan Ferry. Don

Henley. Sting. Peter Gabriel.

Blue Nile. "

"I see instrumental music

influenced by jazz or R&B, like

the Babyface sound. I wanted

to go in a completely different

direction, where the

compositions are harmonically

similar to listening to a Robbie

Robertson or a Peter Gabriel

track. I wanted to capture that

hypnotic groove."

"The demos are so close to the

final product. A lot of the

players came to my house and

did the demos first. There's

live drums on every song... 'On

The Night Ride' is among my

favorite compositions. It has

the most range from low to

high without screaming,

possibly one of the most lyrical

on the record."

"Having the engineer lend his

vibe from the beginning was

important. I wanted to do the

record in Woodstock and

hibernate, away from the label,

New York City and everyone

else. Verve gave me their

blessing. We did the record in

two months, relatively quick

for this kind of production."

CHRIS SMITHERUp On The Lowdown(Hightone)Smither's latest collection of rootsydown home tunes catches on quickat WNCW, KSUT, KDHX, KVMR,KOTO and KERA. Produced byStephen Bruton, Up On TheLowdown breaks in at 39 in it's sec-ond week.

Inside

AmericanaNashville hipster Greg Garing wasin the Bay Area this past weekend tocollaborate with Peter Rowan onsome songwriting as well as torecord a track for an upcoming BillMonroe tribute album. Garing hascreated quite a buzz in Music Citywith his iconoclastic stylings. Amulti -instrumentalist who's touredwith bluegrass legend JimmyMartin, Garing also is a co-ownerof Jitters, the latest and hippest placeto emerge on the Nashville scene.Sitting in with Rowan at Sweetwaterin Mill Valley, he treated the crowdto his unique interpretation of "BigRiver" and several new originals, aswell as a way out version ofLeadbelly's "When I Was ACowboy." The Monroe tribute albumis being produced by Todd Phillips(David Grisman, Psychograss) and

also will feature Laurie Lewis,Kathy Kallick, Tim O'Brien andthe Nashville Bluegrass Band.Rowan and Garing dueted on "LetterFrom My Darling," and Rowan com-mented, "It's not lab -grass, but blue-grass in the true spirit." In this ageof tribute burnout, no one is moredeserving of one than Mr. Monroe....

Great things just don't stop hap-pening in New Orleans. After GAVINleft town there was, of course, MardiGras, and then Emmylou Harrisrolled into town to finish up record-ing her next Asylum album withDaniel Lanois at his Kingsway stu-dio. Word trickling out has this onesounding like a dynamo, with songsfrom the likes of Neil Young, BobDylan, Lucinda Williams, SteveEarle and Miss Emmy up for consid-eration...

And if anyone wonders whatmakes San Francisco the place to be,ponder this one: Emmylou will befronting a 20 -year celebration withthe Hot Band at the legendaryFillmore on Monday, April 3. In theironly North American appearance, this incarnation features RodneyCrowell, Albert Lee, Glen D.Hardin, Steve Fishell, MichaelRhodes and Vince Santoro. If Ilive through the night, you'll read allabout here...

Hey, wait a minute! In last week'sLinda Ronstadt review we incor-rectly credited the writing of"Women 'Cross The River" to DavidOgden, when Americana artistDavid Olney is the writer...

Some sharp -edged alternative -country compilations on the horizoninclude Hell Bent : InsurgentCountry Volume 2, Chicago -basedBloodshot Records' second foraydown this turnpike. Featuring artistsfrom throughout the country, includ-ing S.F.'s Tarnation and RichardBuckner, Gwil Owen, The Old97's, The Cartwrights, CornellHurd, Starkweathers and BottleRockets, Hell Bent comes completewith disturbing artwork by JonLangford of Waco Brothers. RigRock Truckstop on Jeremy Tepper'sDiesel Only label has resurfaced.Back in circulation through Fruit ofthe Tune distributing, Rig Rockserves up 20 tracks destined to befaves among the weed, whites andwine faction, including cuts byCourtney & Western, FiveChinese Brothers, World FamousBlue Jays, Killbilly and MojoNixon. Ask your waitress for one...

GAVIN wishes a speedy andhealthy recovery to MCA artist andAmericana legend Joe Ely, who suf-fered a broken hip this past week inAustin. No word yet on how thismay affect the upcoming release ofLetter To Laredo. We'll have anaddress to send get well cards tosoon.

A3 New Releases

THE GALS:JOAN OSBORNERelish (Blue Gorilla/Mercury)If we are to survive as a format, wemust continue our incredible streakof breaking artists. No other formatinside the pages of GAVIN can boastbreaking new bands with so small anational sample of stations. And,tremendous talent continues tostream by. Case in point: JoanOsborne. This is the exactly therecord your non -industry friendswill be asking you about in sixmonths. In fact, this time next year, look for Osborne to have joined theelite ranks of Sheryl Crow, MelissaEtheridge and Dave Matthews asthe cream of vital new Americanwriters who create new and chal-lenging sounds. Relish is an out-

standing effort on many levels.Recorded with a collaborative spirit(and listed as such on the songwriting credits), the lyrics, the musi-cianship and production meshesabout as perfectly as you're likelyto hear on a record all year long.Experimenting with structure, thesongs are exploratory, emotionaland truly unique while the produc-tion (especially on a song like "OneOf Us") lends itself to a traditionalyet passionate build-up. This ismusic that will please both the dis-criminating programmer looking forinnovation as well as the listenerlooking for a familiar comfort zone.Members of the Hooters serve as asolid support cast while the produc-tion of Rick Chertoff and WilliamWittman (Cyndi Lauper) is warmand listener -friendly. Favoritesinclude (in order): "St. Teresa,""One Of Us," "Spider Web," Bob

Dylan's "Man In The LongBlackcoat" and the strangely erotic"Right Hand Man."

ANNIE LENNOXMedusa (Arista)The mark of a great interpreter iswhen either a song that's beenplayed to death or something sostylized that it's never been attempt-ed by outside hands is turned into

something truly original. AnnieLennox manages both. On "WhiterShade Of Pale," an extremely dan-gerous song to cover because of itssignature Procol Harum lyrics andindelible organ hook, Lennoxexposes a completely new person-ality. On the Clash's "Train In Vain,"complete with hip hop drums, anacoustic -sampled bass sound and aclear reading, we are treated tolyrics we never knew existed onthe slurred and mumbled original.Collecting an album of covers canbe a tricky affair, but well over halfof Medusa is extremely A3 relevantwhile some of the more traditionalsoul selections are better suited forA/C or Top Forty. Besides "Pale"and "Train," Neil Young's "Don't LetIt Bring You Down" and Blue Nile's"Downtown Lights" receive exem-plary artistic commercial treatment.Admittedly "Something So Right" is

LINDA RONSTADTFeels Like Home (Elektra)Rockin' A3 may be view LindaRonstadt's Feels Like Home appre-hensively, and rightly so, but thatdoesn't take away from the fact thatthis is her rootsiest offering in adecade. Consisting of material fromTom Petty, Randy Newman,Matraca Berg, David Onley and NeilYoung, Feels Like Home isNashville/Americana-tinged, athrowback to Ronstadt's Silk Pursedays when you'd hear fiddles andmandolins on underground radio.Using players like Alison Krauss,David Grisman, Emmylou Harris,Ben Keith, Booker T. and Jim

Keltner supplies credibility. While"High Sierra" is beautiful, possibleA3 entries include Petty's "TheWaiting" and Matraca Berg's "WalkOn." Expertly produced byRonstadt and George Massenburg,Feels Like Home benefits from acrystalline 'n -hit mastering job.MY SISTER JANEBig Dirt (???)We first saw My Sister Jane sittingon the tip top of Bill Boyd's KRCL-Salt Lake City playlist. In fact, itwas Bill who urged the band tosend their independent CD to usand we're glad he did. By theirown admission, My Sister Jane is a"five -woman band that defies cate-gorization." If we may attempt toelaborate, MSJ are tribal and"Horde-ish" in their approach, anddisplay a penchant for extension inmuch the same way bands likePhish and Widespread Panic surf

outside grooves and polyrhythms.Trace Wiren might be a spiritualadmirer of Jerry Garcia in that herguitar soars as it explores.Coincidentally, bassist Sally Shaumis Phil Leshian in her tone andrange. As if by design, Big Dirt isloosely funky yet tightly ensemble -driven, but it's also music that tran-scends fashion with the same indi-viduality that the most daring A3outlets have encouraged airplay."New Amsterdam" and "AnimalShelter" as well as the aptly titled"Bud" are our off-the-wall favoritejams. Call Bill Boyd (for lack of abetter contact) at (801)-363-2801 ifyou're man or woman enough forthe rough stuff.SUSAN WERNERIntroducing... (Private Music)Three songs (the rest arrives in aweek) from Susan Werner, a writerequally at home in the electric and

the acoustic arenas. In fact, "St.Mary's Of Regret" is the warmestentry, an acoustic band number thatflatters Wemer's singing talents."Man I Used To Love" is a jazzierswing number featuring the unmis-takable bass work of producerFernando Saunders.

THE GUYS:STEVE FORBERT"It Sure Was Better Back Then"

(Paladin/Giant)A big part of the Nashville sweepoccurred at this year's GAVINSeminar GRIDdle session when "ItSure Was Better Back Then"received enthusiastic radio andaudience response. This is therockin' opener to Steve Forbert'sbrand new album, Mission Of TheCrossroad Palms. The track hasrockin' relate -ability, recallingForbert's salad days.

GAVIN A'EDITORS:

KENT/KEITH

ZIMMERMAN

Ibum dult IternCHRIS SMITHERUp On The Lowdown (Hightone)The first thing you notice is the fin-ger -picked electric guitar playing, then you hear the smoky voice. Theson of a Tulane University professor,Chris Smither set out to mimicLightnin Hopkins and John Hurt butthen, during the '70s, he bumpedinto players like Bonnie Raitt cuttingalbums with the likes of Raitt, LowellGeorge and Dr. John (some of whichwere corporately suppressed).Smither may have entered thenineties boxed inside the folk cate-gory, but it's white blues thatSmithers hints at even when he'swrestling with Dylan's "What Is ItYou Wanted." Produced by StephenBruton, Up On The Lowdown bal-ances Smithers' multiple skills as apicker and singer with a roomy rockproduction:While the title track is ascratchy cross between dirty NewOrleans drawl and Texas trash, listento the street corner groove thatgrows on "Bittersweet."

AL KOOPERSoul Of A Man (Music Masters)Few on this planet revere the firstBlood Sweat & Tears album morethan the Zimmermen. We playedour shoplifted vinyl copy to shreds. It was one of the first CDs everpressed and most recently the 20 -bitgold remastered edition with theadded demo sessions was released.Surely Kooper and producer JohnSimon were rock geniuses.Unfortunately, the band is knownmore for their period with DavidClayton What's -His -Face. It shouldbe noted that Al (fueled by the lateDon Ellis) dabbled with a jazz hornsection before bands like Sons OfChamplin, Chicago Transit Authorityand (ugh!) the Ides Of March ven-tured into the brass jungle. It waswith trepidation that we auditionedthese live renditions until-mygawd-the arrangements (played bythe near original line-up) jumpedout fresh as today's paper. Kooper, whose voice is a little threadbare

from playing three separate bandsets a night at the Bottom Linewhere this was taped, does his bestto hold on to the tiger's tail. This ret-rospective, spanning Kooper's dazewith The Blues Project and BS&T aswell as recent efforts, pays tribute toa pioneer, the very first to fuse bluesand brass with progressive rock.BEN TAYLOR"I Will" (Giant)The sank' shi \ ci s you got listeningto Julian Lennon or Ziggy Marley forthe first time will revisit you whenyou hear Ben Taylor singing PaulMcCartney's "I Will." Using hisgenealogy, Ben Taylor revives theTaylor family's long absent "awshucks" musical innocence. "I Will"comes from the soundtrack to ByeBye Love. It certainly would be niceto hear a whole album produced byeither T -Bone or Ben Wisch.Whaddaya say?MATTHEW SWEET100% Fun (Zoo Entertainment)This is clearly Matthew Sweet's bestmusic since his sweet stuff of theearly '80s. And thanks to the hands-on production of Brendan O'Brien, his crazy -horsy fixation with rustand dust enters a much moremelodic phase. Not only does "SickOf Myself' conform to the non -pre-tentious course set by the album'stitle, it's a wonderful introduction ofwhat's to come. The vocal har-monies and the dueling guitars ofSweet, Richard Lloyd and RobertQuine continually draw from eraspast (i.e. the vocal blend of theByrds, the frantic guitar wars ofTelevision, the analog warmth ofearly R.E.M.) that are near and dearto A3 listeners' musical heritage.100% Fun should be a snap to pro-gram as rocking Midwestern stationslike WWCD, WXRT, KMMS andKBXR lead the way on this superfine collection.GRAHAM PARKER12 Haunted Episodes

(Razor & Tie)The older Graham Parker gets, theless -produced his music becomes.12 Haunted Episodes recalls RandyNewman's 12 Songs in that thesongs are black and white with gra-dated shades of gray replacing thedistraction of colors. Parker hasalways sung with an honesty that'sfrequently misinterpreted as anger.Songs like "Disney's America,""Force Of Nature" and "Partner ForLife" are like '90s folk songs, electricand poetic.

BACK TO BRITANNIA: "I had

a strong desire to work with

people I considered

contemporaries, people like

Andy Partridge and Nick

Heyward who came from a

tradition of English pub music.

Over the past five years music

has become so un-English, so it

was time to make an English -

ON BANDS "I'd made ten

albums with three successful

bands on the trot. After that, I'd

had enough of bands, of five or

six people doing the same

thing. It got a bit weird. I

needed to branch out and do

ON MATURITY: "Actors are

opportunity. My favorite

singers are older. Charles

GAVIN ROCKS

New pleases

LEVELIn The Absence Of The Sacred

(Level Head)Lurking in the same stompinggrounds as Machine Head areOakland's Level. Formed inFebruary 1993, Level (GregLinhares, guitar; Nikko Miladinovich, drums; Mike Sullivan, vocals; JohnGallups, guitar; Paul Perry, bass)boast a burly, hard rock sound ontheir debut -EP, In The Absence OfThe Sacred. Produced and engi-neered by Linhares andMiladinovich, this brutal EP show-cases Level's strangled, darkrhythms which grind along a high-way littered with crunching guitars, jagged bass lines, pummeling drumsand coarse vocal yells. Rock radiowill find the creeping guitar riffs of"The Allknowing" and "Push"(myfave) irresistible, while the melodic

teeth of "Ramhabit" and "TribalEnding" will get the nod from listen-ers who're into murky, metallicromps. Also, don't overlook theeerie plucks of "Shallow," whichwill keep your neck hair on endand your listeners curious. Level arethe next level of '90s aggressiverock. Check it out. Call (510) 420-1867 for your copy.BIG HAIRThe Pickle Farm

(Energy)Big I lairs bio begins with the word"Unorthodox." What an understate-ment. There is no way to categorizeor corner this band; you have tocreate a new format. Surfacing fromRochester, New York, Big Hair(Tom, guitar; Tod, bass/vocals;Andrew, drums, Obadiah, violin)specializes in the art of weirdnesswith their eccentric mix of thrash, punk, metal, funk, jazz and evencountry. The Pickle Farm, which isgoing for adds on March 20/21, willappeal to listeners whose listeningrepertoire has no boundaries. Fromthe juttering string rhythms of"Stoned Ant" to the pluckingmelodies of "Barney Wasn't" to lay-ered guitar chords of "Spooge," BigHair displays fountains of unchartedmusicianship that college rock andalternative radio will enjoy explor-ing. As with Indian food, this may

not appeal to every one but it'sworth a try.MONSTER MAGNETDopes To Infinity

(A&M)I em y A&M's Jay Hughen becausehe gets to work a band that I wouldgive my left nut to have play in myliving room. The mighty MonsterMagnet have already seduced rockradio with their single, "NegasonicTeenage Warhead," which smashedthe GAVIN Rocks record for mostadded the week of March 3 with 56adds. One of the stoniest bands toever lay down a riff, Monster Magnetwill surpass all their current fans'expectations and will undoubtedlyturn on new ones with their newfull-length, Dopes To Infinity. Youdon't have to be a stoner to appreci-ate the gyrating grooves, spaced -outmelodies, breathing rhythms andDave Wyndorfs haunting vocals toappreciate this record. I think theentire album is brilliant, but the titletrack, "All Friends and KingdomCome," "Look To Your Orb For TheWarning," "Vertigo," "ThirdAlternative" and "Ego, The LivingPlanet" provoke the most intensecolors and will go well with anythingyour listeners may be on. If you'refortunate enough to go to this year'sSouth By Southwest conventiondon't miss Monster Magnet's show.

ULTRAHEADDefinition: Aggro

(Shiro)Ultrahead are storming out of LosAngeles like the flood waters ofNorthern California, indiscrimi-nately wreaking havoc on any-thing that gets in their way.Introducing their Shiro Recordsdebut, which is appropriatelytitled Definition: Aggro, Ultrahead(John Nooney, bass; Yasha Filisov, drums; Doug Carrion, vocal/gui-tar) combine a powerful mix ofhard rock and metal elements thatform head -banging rhythms andunstoppable riveting grooves.Already receiving grand reviews inEurope, Ultrahead will win overrock radio with their sheer intensi-ty and '90s -style metal prowess. The emphasis track and video,"And God," will keep your listen-ers tuned with its creeping guitarchords, heavy bass lines andthroaty vocal sneers. "Face Down"and "Motionless" will appeal toyour metal listeners who like a lit-tle thrash mixed in for spice. "EyeCrusher," "Tied To A BrokenChair" and "Dealing WithDisappointment" are other sug-gested tracks that'll keep yourshow fast and hard. Make roomfor next wave of aggression withUltrahead.

Inside AlternativeSo I'm sitting here trying to getthings organized so I can leave forAustin with a guilt -free conscience(12 years of Catholic educationmakes this an impossibility), whenan overwhelming urge to vent sud-denly overcomes me. Since I'mtight for space, my soliloquy onout -of -control egos in certain mar-kets is going to have to wait untilnext week. There's too much goodnews to report this week to wastethe spece on something like that.

Congrats to Christopher Allen,KEDJ-Phoenix's new music direc-tor. As you probably know by now, former MD Willobee exited the sta-tion to join Q Prime Management.Christopher says, "It's always beenmy goal to be a music director-it'swhere my passion's always been. Now, Willobee gets to do some-thing he loves and I get the benefitof stepping into something I love."Since Christopher has always beenvery "hands on" in the musicdepartment, the transition to MDhas been an easy one. He will con-tinue his 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. airshift.

KDGE-Dallas has announced theline up for Edgefest, which isscheduled for Sunday, April 23 atthe Coca Cola StarplexAmphitheater in Dallas. The eventfeatures Adam Ant, Letters ToCleo, Veruca Salt, Sponge, BluesTraveler and local acts TheNixons and Deep BlueSomething. In addition, part ofthe proceeds will go to Habitat ForHumanity who provide low-income families with permanant,long-term solutions for affordablehousing.

WDST-Woodstock welcomes NicHarcourt to the AMD position.Nic, as some already know, hasdone quite a lot to shine a nationalspotlight on the local music scenein the Woodstock/Poughkeepsiearea. Station owner Gary Chetkofsays, "Jeanne Atwood has resumedher academic studies and is onlyavailable to us on a part time basis.Nic is both knowledgable and pas-sionate about music, and his enthu-siasm will be an asset to the futuredirection of the station." Nic'smusic hours are on Mondays andWednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.,and he can be reached at (914) 679-7290.

Cool adds this week: 91-X addedSleeper's "Delicious," Rev 105added The Boo Radleys' "WakeUp Boo" and WDRE added TheDrag's "My Mind's Mine."

Look for Ned's Atomic Dustbinon the Jon Stewart show on March20. The band will start theirAmerican tour on May 1.

New ReleaseSPRAGGA BENZ"A-1 Lover" (Capitol)Checking this one out is a must, as"A-1 Lover" sounds like nothing cur-rently on your playlist. Jamacian-born Spragga Benz mixes raggamuf-fin with gentle house beats, and setsthe whole thing off with a stylishwall of female vocals. Here inCalifornia, we've been hit by rainstorm, after rain storm, after rainstorm, but listening to "A-1 Lover"fills my head with thoughts of sum-mer and sunshine. And believe me,after two solid months of rain, that'snothing short of a miracle!

MAD SEASON"River Of Deceit" (Columbia)With an all-star lineup that boastsmembers of Alice In Chains, PearlJam and Screaming Trees, there's noway commercial alternative stationsaren't going to play "River OfDeceit." But more importantly, withits slow groove and gentle, bluesyfeel, "River Of Deceit" sounds like awinner regardless of the Who's -Wholineup. Already spinning at KROQ,WPGU, WFNX, CIMX, 99X, KPNT,WDST, WDRE and WKOC, to namebut a handful. Also added on MTV.What are you waiting for?

ARCHERS OF LOAFuee Vee (Alias)The Archers of Loaf, in full control ofthe power of punk, the appeal ofpop, and the charm of quirk, belt usover the head with their long -antici-pated sophomore full-length, Vee Vee.On Vee Vee, the now -savvy Archersmasterfully vary tension from track totrack, and by offering more than thepop -punk genre's standard blasevocals and abrasive electric guitars, the band effortlessly maintains bothinterest and credibility. Compare, forexample, the white -knuckle single"Harnessed in Slums" to the simpler, enticing "Greatest Of All Time."Sucker for a sob story? Try "FloatingFriends" and "Death In The Park." Inneed of a new anthem? Check out"Underachievers March and FightSong," in which the Archers resurrectand sweetly rejuvenate the classicfife -and -drum salute. Vee Vee neatlyfulfills the Archers' promise. Stronglyrecommended. - SANDRA DERIAN

Inside CollegeHere's a bombshell for ya: WFIT'sJohn Hammerlund called today tolet me know that the station has calledin an Alternative playlist for the verylast time. Unbelievably, Melbourne,Florida's long-time college/alternativehas already switched to a mix of Jazzand NPR programming. A resignedHammerlund says that he's felt thischange has been pending for sometime, and he encourages labels to ter-minate the station's alternative serviceimmediately. Whoa-end of an era.

When I ran into him at an amazingThinking Fellers/DirtyThree/Fibulator show this pastweekend, Pisces sweetheart KevinRafter from KDVS admonished mefor missing his birthday. In turn, Iscolded him for missing our conven-tion. But just for the record, youngKevin is finally legal-he celebratedhis 21st b -day on March 4.

Those fine KDVS folks also askedme to thank the labels that con-tributed prizes and stuff for the sta-tion's recent fundraiser. In a week'stime (February 19 through February25), KDVS raked in $16,000 inpledges, and they've already collectedtwo-thirds of that amount.

On March 21, WMSV will celebrateits one year anniversary. Next timeyou speak to Steve Ellis or JamesMartin, offer them your congratua-tions.

GU PESinglesBLACKSTREETJoy (Interscope/Atlantic)If expressing that feeling ofecstasy which the song'stitle suggests is what pro-ducer Teddy Riley wasstriving for, then he hit itdead on. Riley is an amaz-ing talent who gets writingassistance on this trackfrom Tammy Lucas andMichael Jackson. Wheneverhis latest reaches the air-waves, there's no doubt itwill bring joy to lots offolks.

ADAM ANTWonderful (Capitol)Best known to Top 40audiences for his 1983 hit,"Goody Two Shoes," here'sa very '90s approach to Antmusic. Quickly securingsignificant play on thealternative front, this titletrack from The Antman'snew collection of tunes isquite unlike his earlierwork. It's a sensitive lyric, delivered wonderfully.FOREIGNERUntil The End Of lime

(Generama/RhythmSafari/Priority)Though they came outrockin' in the late '70s, itwas ballads like "Waiting

For A Girl Like You" and "IWant To Know What LoveIs" that took Mick Jonesand Lou Gramm to the topof the chart in the '80s.They reignite that sparkwith this beautifully craftedentry.SPANISH FLYDaddy's Home

(Upstairs/Warner Bros.)Though this song appearedon this page two monthsago (GAVIN January 20), thistasty cover of the early '60shit by Shep & The Limelites(redone by JermaineJackson in 1973) was onsmall independent UpstairsRecords. Now with majorlabel support, expect majorthings to happen.

BILLIE RAY MARTINYour Loving Arms(Sire/EEG)There's something in BillieRay's voice that is simplymagnetic. This one-timemember of London'sElectribe 101 releases a lotof electricity on her own asproven by one super hotdance track.

AlbumsMAD SEASONAbove

(Columbia)Three of rock's most talent-ed musicians, Layne Stanley(Alice In Chains), MikeMcReady (Pearl Jam) andBarrett Martin (ScreamingTrees) joined forces withnew corner John BakerSaunders and formed MadSeason. Above is a collec-tion of passionate tunesthat showcase Stanley'ssoulful lyrics which humblylead the band's somberrhythms. Far from being afollow-up to Temple OfThe Dog, Mad Season hastheir own introspectivesound, and will undoubted-ly be a hit on all rock for-mats. "River Of Deceit" isthe first single to go toradio but it's only one often impressive tracks. "X -Ray Mind," "I'm Above" and"Lifeless Dead" are othertracks that will strike achord with your listeners.

LINDA RONSTADTFeels Like Home

(Elektra/EEG)Here's the most varied ofany Ronstadt album sincethe early '80s. It's an eclec-tic mix of back porch har-monizing with EmmylouHarris on songs like NeilYoung's "After The GoldRush," hard rockin' countrylike Matraca Berg's "WalkOn," or Byrds-like TomPetty on "The Waiting." Allthis before we can get tothe disc's radiant center-piece, the obscure "The

Blue Train," which shouldprove to be Ronstadt's mostsuccessful single in adecade. -RoN FELL

ANNIE LENNOXMedusa (Arista)If you too were among themillions captivated by AnnieLennox's debut solo effort,Diva, and have been wait-ing for the follow-up, yourwait is over. Medusa is astunning collection of songs.Among the artists/groupsshe pays tribute to are TheClash, Al Green, PaulSimon, Neil Young, BobMarley and TheTemptations. In doing analbum of covers, it's impor-tant the artist make the songtheir own and Lennox suc-ceeds. The first single, "NoMore 'I Love You's'" is see-ing multiple format success. While the whole CD isworth sinking your earsinto, other standout tracksinclude "Train In Vain,""Take Me To The River," "ICan't Get Next To You" and"Waiting In Vain."

VARIOUS ARTISTSThe Basketball DiariesOriginal Soundtrack(Island)Author Jim Carroll's TheBasketball Diaries is mak-ing the leap from print tosilver screen and this musicmay serve as the bridgebetween the two. Pearl Jamaccompanies Carroll on anupdated version of the raw -bone rocker "Catholic Boy,"and the relentless drone ofP.J. Harvey's "Down By TheWater" is atmospheric, andunderscores the book'sthemes of sex, death andloss of innocence. GreenApple Quickstep's accessi-ble "Dizzy" should shine oncommercial alternativeradio, and Flea's eastern -fla-vored "I've Been Down" isanother standout. Theimpressive lineup is sup-ported by a deep bench, and this soundtrack shouldfare well no matter whatthe film does.

CHANNEL LIVEStation Identification(Capitol)Who says that consciousnessin hip -hop was a trend thatfaded with the late '80s?Channel Live prove thatintelligence and rhyming stillgo hand in hand; that streetscholars can still thrive in aviolent, misogynistic rapworld. Dreadmen Hakimand Tuffy set it off withGAVIN Rap chart -topper "MadIzm." The album in no waydisappoints as it revealssavvy lyrical tosses thatboast and educate on trackslike "Build & Destroy,""Down Goes The Devil" (aPave of mine) and "HomicideRide." Producer/mentorKRS-ONE lavishes the boom -bap with splashes of hornon "Reprogram" and pianoon "Sex For The Sport," ajam with multi -format poten-tial. Channel Live is the ulti-mate in what the Blastmastercalls "Edutainment." Turnon, tune in and get hyped!

NEAL SCHONBeyond The Thunder(Higher Octave)Midway into the eclectic'90s, it has become increas-ingly pointless for rock gui-tarists like Journey's NealSchon to book into a studioand emerge with a clicheripping, lead guitar record.Forty million records later,Schon explores alternativeavenues by hooking upwith the acclaimed LosAngeles indie label, HigherOctave. Beyond TheThunder delves into textur-al and melodic instrumen-tals suitable for today's pro-gressive adult radioappetites like adult alterna-tive and A3. As Schon dab-bles with smooth jazz("Cool Breeze") and searingatmospherics ("Espanique"),so too does he expand andmodernize his rock visions.Journey -man keyboardistJonathan Cain co -writes andco -produces Schon's firstHigher Octave departure.
