Welcome to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s 2017 Season, a marvelous feast of music-making, exploring the remarkable range of orchestral repertoire. I am particularly delighted that we are presenting a new series showcasing the talents of the MSO Chorus.

Highlights include the viscerally exhilarating Carmina Burana, Haydn’s vivid telling of the Creation story from the first dramatic burst of light to Mankind’s arrival in the Garden of Eden, along with Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, Mozart’s Requiem and Handel’s Messiah. With such a list of masterpieces we can’t wait to show off our Chorus – who are also, by the way, involved in our special Opera in Concert evening.

Also new is our very first Composer in Residence. We are delighted to be welcoming one of Australia’s finest composers, Elena Kats-Chernin, to the MSO family. On the menu are a number of her established works and, most exciting, two pieces that she is writing especially for us.

The guest artists joining us in 2017 are a most distinguished and varied group. From the astounding French pianist (and wolf conservationist) Hélène Grimaud, through the glorious voices of Siobhan Stagg, Stuart Skelton, Eva Kong, Erin Wall amongst many others, to the virtuosic wizardry of superstar violinist Maxim Vengerov who joins us for our opening night gala, this season has something for everyone.

Opening the 2017 Season in style, world-renowned violinist Maxim Vengerov joins the MSO to perform the fiendishly difficult Violin Concerto by Tchaikovsky. Full of soaring melodies, melancholy and virtuosity, this work has rightfully claimed its place amongst the great violin concertos of all time.

Scheherazade tells the story of a slave girl having to amuse the sultan by telling him a new story every night. Several of these come together in Rimsky-Korsakov’s colourful oriental fantasy; a highlight in the Russian orchestral repertoire and the ideal work for an ensemble of virtuosos like the MSO. Maxim Vengerov will conduct this beautiful work.

Brilliant, intriguing yet difficult, music critic Michael Kennedy declared it ‘Mahler’s most glamorous symphony’. The symphony is paired with Stanhope’s ode to the night skies, The Heavens Declare.

Guest conductor Nicholas Carter joins the MSO for three powerhouse works. Prokofiev's Classical Symphony offers a 20th century re-imagination of the classical style of Haydn and Mozart. Melbourne based violinist Anne-Marie Johnson performs the beautifully lyrical Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, and Tchaikovsky’s tormented mind is on display in his Symphony No.4.

Elgar’s heartfelt adagio, Sospiri, offers a musing towards World War I before his Enigma Variations then takes the traditional ‘theme and variations’ concept to a new and intriguing level.

Mozart La Clemenza di Tito: Overture Mozart Clarinet Concerto Mozart Requiem

This third concert of the Mozart Festival examines three of Mozart’s final works, written in the year of his death at the tender age of 35. Famously, his Requiem was left unfinished and was completed after his death. The MSO and Richard Egarr will plumb the emotional depths of these works from a great composer.

Handel Messiah

Since its triumphant premiere in Dublin in 1742, Messiah has remained Handel’s most frequently performed work. In 2017, Messiah will be conducted by Rinaldo Alessandrini, whose no-holds-barred approach has won him plaudits across the world. Join in the festive spirit with soprano Sara Macliver, mezzo-soprano Joslyn Rechter, tenor Ed Lyon, bass Salvo Vitale, and the MSO Chorus for Handel’s Messiah.

Massenet Thaïs

Prepare to ride every rocky moment in Massenet’s famous rollercoaster of purity, piety and lust.

Set in Byzantine, Thaïs by French composer Massenet tells the story of a monk named Athanaël (Quinn Kelsey), who attempts to convert an Alexandrian courtesan, Thaïs (Erin Wall), to Christianity.

His belief that he is doing God’s work comes unstuck when he realises that he was in fact driven by desire the whole time — a realisation that unfortunately only strikes once he has had Thaïs carted off to a nunnery to have her sins absolved. Dismayed, Athanaël repudiates his vows and rushes to find a sickly Thaïs on her deathbed. Despite his declarations of love, will he be able to keep her alive?

The MSO and MSO Chorus are thrilled to be bringing this opera to Melbourne audiences in concert form, with Chief Conductor Sir Andrew Davis sure to make this rendition a cherished experience for passionate opera lovers and newcomers alike.

Experience the work of America’s most performed living composer, John Adams, as the MSO and the 2017 Ensemble in Residence, the Australian String Quartet, perform his witty and inspired take on Beethoven’s spirited scherzos in Absolute Jest — a large-scale work celebrating Beethoven’s energy and feeling with chugging rhythms and imaginative orchestral colours.

In the second half, Beethoven’s final symphony brings together soprano Jacqueline Porter, contralto Liane Keegan, tenor Henry Choo, bass Shane Lowrencev and the MSO Chorus for one of the greatest works of the repertoire.

Often referred to as the ‘Choral Symphony’, this large-scale combined orchestral and choral work is a triumphant expression of humankind, with Friedrich Schiller’s Ode to Joy being one of its many high points.

The MSO will then salute the Waltz king, Johann Strauss in Korngold’s Straussiana before Richard Strauss’ Suite from Der Rosenkavalier rounds out an evening of gorgeous melodies and waltzes.

And they will be free. This innovation in orchestral music has been made possible

by the generosity of Mr Sidney Myer’.

In 1959 the Sidney Myer Music Bowl opened, giving an iconic home to these much loved

public events. 2017 marks 88 years of the MSO performing these annual concerts, a gift to the

people of Victoria from Sidney Myer.

This unprecedented collaboration across cultures brings together the MSO and a 20 piece orchestra of Javanese gamelan players to conjure the bewitching live score for the new silent film Satan Jawa. A lavish work of suspenseful cinema, Satan Jawa is directed by revered Indonesian filmmaker Garin Nugroho with a soundtrack jointly written by award-winning Australian composer Iain Grandage and renowned Indonesian composer Rahayu Supanggah. Satan Jawa is a new commission presented as part of the inaugural Asia TOPA celebration of Asian-focused performance and culture.

Asia TOPA: Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts is a joint initiative of the Sidney Myer Fund and Arts Centre Melbourne and is supported by the Australian and Victorian Governments.

Korean-born, Sydney-based soprano Eva Kong is a regular performer with Opera Australia and Victorian Opera. Following on from her successful role as Liu in Turandot for Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour in 2016, Eva joins the MSO for a not-to-be-missed performance in Carmina Burana.

Unsuk Chin is an award-winning composer, writing for orchestras and ensembles across the globe. Born in South Korea, although now based in Berlin, Chin founded the Seoul Philharmonic’s contemporary music series, which she continues to oversee in addition to her compositional work.

Australian-Chinese cellist Li-Wei Qin rejoins the MSO following his performances with the Orchestra in Melbourne and China in 2016. Alongside performances with many of the leading orchestras around the world, Qin performed at both the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics.

Lyric tenor Henry Choo was raised in Melbourne and is an alumnus of young artist programs at Opera Queensland and Opera Australia. He has performed with some of the top orchestras and performing arts companies in the country and abroad, and makes a welcome return to the MSO in 2017.

British conductor Christopher Seaman joins the MSO and the MSO Chorus for some delightfully fun traditional tunes, from famous orchestral works like holiday season favourites The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky, Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Christmas Eve.

J.S Bach’s opening chorus from the Christmas Oratorio brings a sense of distinguishment to the occasion and Corelli’s crowd favourite Christmas Concerto sees the depiction of shepherds visiting the manger in Bethlehem on the first Christmas.

We’ll also throw in a few rounds of the Hallelujah Chorus, just for good measure! Bring out the eggnog (or the prawns) because there’s plenty of festive cheer to go around with the MSO this festive season!

As ticket sales account for only 35% of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s revenue, the Orchestra relies on funding from government organisations and support from its donors.
