Welcome to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s 2017 Season, a marvelous feast of music-making, exploring the remarkable range of orchestral repertoire. I am particularly delighted that we are presenting a new series showcasing the talents of the MSO Chorus.

Highlights include the viscerally exhilarating Carmina Burana, Haydn’s vivid telling of the Creation story from the first dramatic burst of light to Mankind’s arrival in the Garden of Eden, along with Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, Mozart’s Requiem and Handel’s Messiah. With such a list of masterpieces we can’t wait to show off our Chorus – who are also, by the way, involved in our special Opera in Concert evening.

Also new is our very first Composer in Residence. We are delighted to be welcoming one of Australia’s finest composers, Elena Kats-Chernin, to the MSO family. On the menu are a number of her established works and, most exciting, two pieces that she is writing especially for us.

The guest artists joining us in 2017 are a most distinguished and varied group. From the astounding French pianist (and wolf conservationist) Hélène Grimaud, through the glorious voices of Siobhan Stagg, Stuart Skelton, Eva Kong, Erin Wall amongst many others, to the virtuosic wizardry of superstar violinist Maxim Vengerov who joins us for our opening night gala, this season has something for everyone.

I am looking forward immensely to sharing this fabulous season with you all!

People from all walks of life should be able to enjoy our performances.

Melbourne is our home and it’s where we play. We never play in the

background, always in the fore. We are the sound and the soul of the city. We are Melbourne’s Symphony Orchestra.

One of the world’s greatest violinists joins the MSO to open the 2017 Season in grand style. This will be

an extraordinary and unforgettable evening.

Season Opening Gala

Maxim Vengerov

MAXIM VENGEROV Tuesday 28 February 8pm Hamer Hall

Benjamin Northey conductor Maxim Vengerov violin/conductor*

Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherezade*

Opening the 2017 Season in style, world-renowned violinist Maxim Vengerov joins the MSO to perform the fiendishly difficult Violin Concerto by Tchaikovsky. Full of soaring melodies, melancholy and virtuosity, this work has rightfully claimed its place amongst the great violin concertos of all time.

Scheherazade tells the story of a slave girl having to amuse the sultan by telling him a new story every night. Several of these come together in Rimsky-Korsakov’s colourful oriental fantasy; a highlight in the Russian orchestral repertoire and the ideal work for an ensemble of virtuosos like the MSO. Maxim Vengerov will conduct this beautiful work.

Allow the MSO to transport you into the world of a thousand-and- one nights.

THAÏS: OPERA IN CONCERT Saturday 26 August 8pm Hamer Hall

Sir Andrew Davis conductor Erin Wall soprano (Thaïs) Liane Keegan contralto (Albine) Diego Silva tenor (Nicias) Quinn Kelsey baritone (Athanaël) Daniel Sumegi bass (Palémon) Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus

Massenet Thaïs

Prepare to ride every rocky moment in Massenet’s famous rollercoaster of purity, piety and lust.

Set in Byzantine, Thaïs by French composer Massenet tells the story of a monk named Athanaël (Quinn Kelsey), who attempts to convert an Alexandrian courtesan, Thaïs (Erin Wall), to Christianity.

His belief that he is doing God’s work comes unstuck when he realises that he was in fact driven by desire the whole time — a realisation that unfortunately only strikes once he has had Thaïs carted off to a nunnery to have her sins absolved. Dismayed, Athanaël repudiates his vows and rushes to find a sickly Thaïs on her deathbed. Despite his declarations of love, will he be able to keep her alive?

The MSO and MSO Chorus are thrilled to be bringing this opera to Melbourne audiences in concert form, with Chief Conductor Sir Andrew Davis sure to make this rendition a cherished experience for passionate opera lovers and newcomers alike.

‘ Erin Wall was a revelation as Thaïs… combining astonishing technical control with a beautifully creamy, focused tone.'

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to providing the best live music opportunities for all Victorians. The MSO continues to attract and encourage people to engage and interact with the music we perform as part of the wider cultural life of this city. This inspires a love of music as well as increasing participation in music education.

Essential to achieving our aims is financial support from private trusts, foundations and individuals. With your help, we can successfully plan and thrive, bringing great music to larger, more responsive audiences of all ages. You can be an important part of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra community.

ADOPT A MUSICIANMSO Musicians are some of the hardest working professionals in the country, and we know they have earned your respect.

Our goal is to bring our players closer to our supporters by allowing each and every one of these talented musicians to be ‘adopted’ by a generous donor or group of donors who, through their gifts, will strengthen the MSO now and into the future. All of our musicians look forward to bringing you into their world. Find out how you can Adopt a Musician by contacting our Philanthropy Department.

BECOME A PATRONBeing an MSO Patron is an active demonstration of support for your Orchestra. Our Patrons share the MSO’s world, on and off the stage, through various special programs including regular newsletters, access to rehearsals and exclusive activities with MSO musicians and guest artists.Annual gifts of $1,000 and over are publicly acknowledged.

YOUR GIFT CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR: — Children: through our award-

winning education programs

— Regional and metropolitan audiences: through touring, broadcasting and recording

— Players: through instrument and equipment acquisition, to ensure the Orchestra sounds the best it can be

— MSO operations: through funding special projects, and building a reserve for the future

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!Consider adding a gift to the MSO in your Will – every bequest makes the MSO stronger. Or consider adding a gift to your subscription to support your Orchestra, and to inspire and engage young music lovers.

All donations $2 and over are fully tax-deductible.

For more information please call our Philanthropy Department on 03 9626 1551 or visit mso.com.au/support

As ticket sales account for only 35% of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s revenue, the Orchestra relies on funding from government organisations and support from its donors. The MSO receives funding from the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body, and the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria. It is also funded by the City of Melbourne, Principal Partner Emirates and individual corporate partners, trusts, foundations and donors.
