The opportunities to make money out of sport seem to be endless. In the last newsletter I touched on the topic
of corruption in sport and since then we have had further shocks.
Gulam Bodi a former Protea’s and Lions cricketer has recently been banned for 20 years by Cricket South Africa
for match fixing involving cricket matches being played in South Africa. The tennis world has been rocked by
allegations of match fixing relating to tennis matches played overseas.
Roger Federer and Novak Dokovic have denied that there is match fixing at the top levels of tennis but it seems
that games at the next level below ATP and WTA matches are regularly attended by scouts who sit on the
sidelines and feed information to betting agencies in respect of games that have already been played and betting
is then opened on the results after the event.
These scandals make it increasingly difficult to believe that what we are watching on television and in live
matches is a true reflection of the skills, strategy and ability of the players and the teams that we support. ’
Where does it all end ‘we may ask? If matches are associated with large corporate sponsors who claim to have
integrity then we assume that what we are watching is real and legal.
With large bribes on offer from betting agencies, and their hangers –on, it must be increasingly difficult for
sportsmen to resist the temptation to succumb to their overtures. As a gullible public who love sport we
continue to believe that it can’t be happening. Not in our favourite sports and not by our favourite sportsmen.
The Rio Olympics are around the corner and we will all be glued to our television sets to observe what we believe
to be top athletes at the peak of their abilities. Can our legitimate sportspersons compete on level ground
against the perceived best athletes in the world? Will the outcomes be real or will we be dealing with illusions
as to how good these athletes really are? Each of us would like to believe that what we see is what we get but,
perhaps, like Father Christmas and the Easter Bunny, we are all living in a world of make-believe.

HOCKEY 2016
From the Mini Hockey side we are very excited about all the new developments and the contagious energy from
all involved. Wanderers Bugs include all our pre-school and primary school children (ages 4-13). The 2016 season
starts on the 5th of March and runs into August.
We are delighted to welcome our new head coach, Miguel da Graca and hope he enjoys the time he spends
with the Mini Hockey section. We wish him and the rest of the South African Men’s Hockey team well in the
upcoming three-test series against Germany on February 26, 27 and 29 in Cape Town.
Another project we are working on is our new website www.wanderersminihockey.com. A big thank you to Simon
Slater, who has spent many hours setting it up. We are hoping by next year to reduce our admin load significantly
by registering players through the website but for now it will be mostly for information on the Mini Hockey section
especially updates around practice sessions and tournaments.
For any information on Wanderers Mini Hockey (Wanderers Bugs) please visit the website or contact me via whats
app/sms/ email.

This has been a hectic period at Wanderers, the heat wave and drought causing many problems with our greens,
however in true Wanderers tradition, we prevailed.
The BSA Masters Tournament was held 12-14th February and the Club received many compliments on the
facilities. Wayne Perry and Bobby Donnelly participated in the men’s singles and we are extremely proud of them.
Adrian Burke was a designated marker and umpire at the Masters, well done Adrian, you are proving an asset to
Wanderers.
We unfortunately bid farewell to two members, Sam Jaffe and Tom Eccles, who passed on. Tom was an extremely
long serving member, always having his say. Sam with the smiling face. Both will be sorely missed at TAB sessions.
Yvonne Muller, once a mover at the club, passed on. Yvonne had run the Coaching academy together with George
Cohen for many years.
Wanderers’ men, with 2 teams in Premier League, are lying in position 5 and 8 at this stage and we hope for a
strong finish.
The C side is finding it difficult, however, the D team have won Division 6 and will be promoted. Well done to all.
The Wanderers women A side are running mid table.
Anne van Dijk and the Pennant side finished outside the semi-finals, however, Rally Kartun pointed out “we beat
the team that finished top”.
The Development Academy, held on a Saturday morning by Ron Burns and Allan Gordon, is going strong.
Christian Kerr, Gregory Burns and Josh Wookey, all 16 years of age, have been playing in the Premier League, what an achievement at such a young age!
The Tower Novices, an extremely popular tournament, is run by Mark Oliver and Richard Bucher, it will soon come
to an end. There were 183 entries from the various districts. We thank Lionel van Niekerk of Warwick Wealth for
arranging a sponsorship for the Tower Novices, gratefully accepted.
Janis Fluxman will once again be arranging the “End of League Braai“on Saturday 12 March at 6pm. It will be
priced at R40 per head for meat, salads and rolls. Payment is up front.
Partners are welcome so please give your names to either Janis or Rose Wookey who are collecting payment
before the function so that we have the correct attendance figures and not have an extra 50 people arriving.
Special attraction at the braai will be the attendance of Braai Masters, Tony Faulkner and Charl Gussenhoven,
who always give a command performance.
See you around the bowling greens!

NEWSLETTER
FEBRUARY 2016
Dear Warriors!
Happy 2016! We look forward to welcoming you all back.
This newsletter contains important information about this year's schedules and our new club
offering.
Our Technique School and private lessons are already underway and we were delighted to see
kids returning from the holidays already working hard on improving their skills so that they will
be ahead of the game for the new season. It is clear, from all the recent studies that children
need exercise. We believe soccer is the easiest form of exercise a person can do especially if
they are doing it with their friends and having fun. Start the habit early, and the friendships will
be for life.
We have had time to review our fabulous season last year and are ready to lead our Warriors to
the next level. Our main focus will be to offer the best football experience for young South
Africans by ensuring the healthiest fun a child can have as well as the highest level of coaching
the country has to offer. We are therefore hosting a "Parents Evening" on 29 February for U9
and U10 and on 1 March for U8, U11 and U12 where we will outline our vision for the new
season. We urge you to attend so that you understand how it will work.
Please join our FACEBOOK page where all newsletters will be posted and you will not fall

We would like to extend a massive congratulations to our U13 team who played in the VW tournament in
December and won the trip to Paris! The team in the final consisted of the entire Wanderers Warriors team.
6 of the players have been at Warriors from the age of U8 with the rest joining us over the years. We hope
many other future teams will follow in their footsteps and we are working hard to develop South Africa's
future stars!
Just an example of how we at Wanderers Squash are promoting squash development
We made Chris Hughes our “Member of the Year 2015” for his efforts and for getting his Company to support this initiative
Good day everybody
This message is to thank all of you who supported and contributed to the very successful end-of-
year Thusong Youth Centre squash tournament.
We had twelve competitors from TYC (five of whom were girls). Together with the four coaches
we made up four teams of four players. Thanks to all of you who contributed, we were able to
distribute marvelous prizes not only to the winners but to everybody who participated throughout
the year.
I’d especially like to thank the following:
- Worley Parsons for the provision of transport throughout the year, court fees, prizes and T-
shirts for the tournament
- Wanderers Squash Club for sponsoring the food (Dave) and for assisting with the court
logistics (Gary Plumstead)
- South African Blood Services for supplying abundant prizes
- Egoli Squash for their support and for attending the tournament (Sharon and team)
- Gauteng Squash for their ongoing encouragement and support
- Thusong Youth Centre for making the whole year possible
- And my team of coaches and assistants (Alan / Tony / Donovan and Brent / Solly)
Squash
The Egoli Squash players put on a marvelous demonstration of where the TYC kids could be in three
years’ time. This has really inspired the kids and with their enthusiasm and enough training time I
believe these kids could be future Provincial squash players.
Best wishes to everybody for 2016 and watch this space for this year’s achievements!
Chris Hughes and the Team

Club News:
Not much news to report yet as the squash season hasn’t started in earnest yet, but
preparations for Gauteng and Masters is in full swing. I implore any of you fence-sitters who’ve
never played league or are in retirement, to please let Gary or Phil know that you might be
available…………even if only as a reserve on an “occasional” basis.
It’s always sad when people leave the Club, but we are particularly sad at losing Ian Lindsay to a
knee injury; he has been a Member forever, and a sponsor of the “tins” on Courts 1&3. Also Hilario
Fiandeiro has moved to Jeppe as it is closer to home and work. Also, Byron Neat has left, injured I
believe. On a brighter note, I see Alf Close back on court after an extensive lay-off, obviously
with an eye on the World Masters in September. Rumour also has it that Russell Adams is back in
town after a 2 year stint in the bustling metropolis of Komatipoort………..let’s hope he hasn’t lost
his passion for squash.
The Committee are in the final negotiations with Gauteng Squash over our entries into the various
leagues which have culminated in entries into 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th & 9th league teams. We also have
6 teams in Masters League from 2nd to 6th leagues.

There have been a few changes to our weekly schedule this year, mainly due to the exciting new high performance training. This takes place on a Monday and Wednesday night, thanks to Ivo and Marloes for arranging this, and to David Calvert for coaching. It's such a great opportunity for the Wanderers players, and badminton within the province. Due to this, the lower league training is now held on a Wednesday from 8-9.30pm; all are welcome to this, where fitness, footwork, shot techniques are taught and games are played. Emmanuel is continuing with junior training on Friday evenings 6.00-8.00p.m., and he welcomes anyone under 18 to try out the game and hopefully to join Wanderers. Most Friday's after the junior training there is a group who come down for some social games, if you would like to know more about this, speak to
any committee member and be added to the “Whats App” social group.
The hall is available from 7pm on a Tuesday night, with social night officially beginning at 7.30. If you want to play before, you will need to bring your own shuttles Please see the notice board for other time slots available and book your slot through Shane (his contact details are on the board). On Tuesday the 16th February, the badminton section held their AGM. Dale Hermanson from the main committee attended the meeting and our committee and members appreciated his time. The committee would like to thank Owen, who has been our chairman for many years and will continue to be so for the coming year, for all his continued hard work. His knowledge of the game, both the playing and the administrative side is incredible and matched by his love of the sport. Unfortunately Rose Knight stood down for re-election and we thank her for her dedication over the years she has given to the committee. Otherwise the previous committee members were elected plus two new candidates. The committee would like to welcome Ivo van Ono and Les Braizier to the team; we look forward to another successful year.
We are so super proud of our badminton star, Prakash Naath, who recently won bronze in the men's singles at the Mauritius international, and is due to take part in the Thomas Cup prelims later this month. Even more to be proud of is that he was selecting to be part of the road to Tokyo 2020 Olympic squad. Keep up the good work.

The 2016 Snooker season is upon us and we wish to start the season off by welcoming a host of new players,
as well as some old faces, who have come back to Wanderers and CGSA Snooker. With a record number of
teams, we have another packed season ahead of us and we would like to invite all interested players to come
and see what snooker at Wanderers is all about and enjoy this lovely game with us.
The Central Gauteng Snooker Association AGM took place on Thursday, the 28th of January 2016 at the
Wanderers Club and we held the 2015 Awards Ceremony at the same time. Congratulations go to everybody
who performed well during the last season, both locally and at provincial level. You guys truly make us proud to
be part of Central Gauteng Snooker.
The Gauteng Snooker Association (Previously known as the Highveld Region Snooker Coordinating Council)
season will kick off with the annual Jannie Smuts Committee tournament, where teams made up of committee
members from the various GSA provinces, compete for the title. Central Gauteng has won the event every year
since inception. Good luck on continuing this proud record guys.
The Central Gauteng Snooker Association League fixtures start on the 7th of March 2016, but CGSA will be
kicking the season off with the “2016 Johannesburg & Districts” tournament which will be played from the 22nd of
February 2016. Our next newsletter will include the results from this prestigious event. The early date for this
event serves as a good kick-off to the season and will hopefully get everybody in the right frame of mind at the
start of a very competitive season for 2016. Depending on the number of team entries we receive this week; our
Premier League will take place between Monday and Thursday evenings. As soon as the completed league
fixtures are available, we will post it on the Wanderers website and you will be able to follow the season’s
matches.
All team registrations MUST also ensure that the team members are current Wanderers members as well, as
you will not be able to participate if you do not have a valid membership card. We also urge you to please ensure
that your membership card is pre-loaded with money for lights if you wish to benefit from members rates;
otherwise the system cannot function properly on league nights, or during practice.
Central Gauteng and the Wanderers Club will be hosting just about all the SA National events for the next two
years. These include the SA Singles, SA 6 Reds, SA Masters and SA Interprovincial Championships. We look
forward to bringing you the up-to-date results and news on these and other events as the 2016 season
progresses and I once again urge anybody who is interested to come and watch some of the fantastic snooker
played by our top players.
Yours in Snooker
