With such a great zeal, zest and enthusiasm the first ex-com meeting of the new officer bearers of IEEE Madras Section was held on 20 th Feb, 2010 at NIOT. Fruitful discussions were held on several issues. Some of them include: Streamlining the procedure for sanctioning financial assistance for conferences/seminars, sponsoring FDPs, Budget proposal for the current financial year, Up-gradation of the website, senior membership drive, starting a new Society-Microwave Theory and Techniques (MTT), registration of the Section & PAN card follow-up etc. The executive committee unanimously felt that the section has to encourage and motivate the IEEE student branches to organize conferences/ seminars by giving technical and financial support. In this context, the student branches have been advised to follow the guidelines formulated and given below. Submit the application (as per the format available in http:// ewh.ieee.org/r10/madras/ ) through proper channel, at least 30 days ahead of the event with the following attachments: 1. IEEE members list–both students and staff with membership number for the current year. 2. A draft copy of the brochure or first call letter of the event. (the soft copy can be mailed before 8 th of the month to [email protected] for publicity through the IEEE MAS LINK, our monthly bulletin) Mail the conference details to [email protected] for uploading in the IEEE Explore, On approval by the Execom, the student branch will be suitably intimated by Section office. On receipt of the approval, the student branch counselors are advised to finalize the communication and other related material such as Brochure, Invitation, Certificate, Proceedings both hard copy and soft copy with the IEEE Logo with a mention “Sponsored by IEEE Madras Section”. The sponsorship amount {(Rs. 5,000/- (20-50 members), Rs.10,000/- (51-100), Rs.15,000/- (101-150) and Rs. 20,000/- (above 150)} will be sent to the student branch within a month of approval, in the form of cheque drawn in favor of the respective student branch account. Kindly acknowledge the receipt of the same. The student branch counselors are also requested to submit the following within 15 days of conduct of the event to the Section office: Stamped receipt signed by the branch counselor / Head of the institution Copy of the bill(s) signed by the branch counselor and Head of the institute, for the amount sanctioned. With such a great zeal, zest andenthusiasm the first ex-com meeting of the newofficer bearers of IEEE Madras Section was held on20th Feb, 2010 at NIOT. Fruitful discussions wereheld on several issues. Some of them include:Streamlining the procedure for sanctioning financial

Technical Presentation on “Satellite Communications”

IEEE Madras Section, IEEECommunications Society and IEEE ComputerSociety along with Computer Society of Indiaorganized a technical presentation on SatelliteCommunications on 4th Mar 2010.

Shri S Ramesh, Station Engineer,Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai gave an excellentoverview of the satellite communication startingwith the history of satellite communications tothe present scenario. The components of asatellite communication system were wellexplained, including the telemetry, tracking andcontrol of the satellites. The types of satelliteorbits, the frequencies used and the applicationswere well illustrated. The requirements ofsatellite earth station and the antennas were alsodiscussed in detail. Shri Ramesh also shared withpride, the fact that India is one of the top sevencountries in the world in launching of satellites.The presentation was followed by a livelyquestion and answer session with enthusiastic

participation from the audience. Studentmembers who participated were also introducedto the in plant training offered by DoordarshanKendra Chennai. Shri S Ramesh expressed hiswillingness to help the students in this regard.

Earlier, Dr. T. Thyagarajan, Chairman,IEEE Madras Section, welcomed the gathering.Dr. N. R. Alamelu, Secretary, IEEE MadrasSection and Chairperson, IEEE CommunicationsSociety, Madras Section introduced the speaker.Mr. S. Ramasamy, Chairman, CSI ChennaiChapter, presented the memento to the speakerShri Ramesh on behalf of the organizers joiningwith Mr. H.R. Mohan, Chairman, IEEE CS. Afterthe presentation, Mr. P. Subramanian, Secretary,IEEE Communications Society, proposed thevote of thanks.

Workshop on “Engineering Principles in Science and MathematicsClassrooms” at SSN College of Engineering

IEEE Madras Section & IEEE StudentBranch of SSNCE jointly conducted a two dayworkshop on ”Engineering Principles inScience and Mathematics Classrooms” at SSNCollege of Engineering on 17th & 18th December2009. The program was conducted under theauspices of IEEE R10 Educational ActivitiesCommittee - TISP Educational outreachprogram. A total of 35 participants from variousGovernment higher secondary schools in andaround Chennai and Kanchipuram districtsparticipated.

Dr. S. Salivahanan, Chairman IEEEMadras Section and Principal, SSNCEwelcomed the gathering. Dr. S. Muthan,Professor of Anna University Chennai was theChief Guest of the program. He gave a veryinsightful talk on how learning should be madeinteresting for the next generation during hisinaugural address. Dr. M. Sreenivasan,Professor of Mathematics, SSNCE spoke abouthow Mathematics could be made easy at theschool level. After the tea break, the sessionwas handled by Dr. V. Raajini, Professor,Electrical Engineering Department, SSNCE on

“Understanding the engineering profession” andhighlighting how the engineering profession isa more satisfying career option for the newgeneration. After a sumptuous lunch, Prof.Singaravadivelu, Physics Department, SSNCEgave a talk on “Learning Physics is Fun”. Thiswas followed by a visit to the Physicslaboratory. The participants were given handson training in certain experiments. The programbroke for the day.

The second day started with a sessionon “Making Mathematics Simple” by Dr. B.Praba, Associate Professor, MathematicsDepartment, SSNCE. Participants then visitedthe English language lab where Dr. Divya John,HOD, English Department, SSNCEdemonstrated various tools used at the languagelab to improve the English pronunciation andvocabulary. The participants visited variousDepartments and the Central library. Afterlunch Dr. M. Siluvai Micheal, AssistantProfessor, Chemistry Department, SSNCEspoke about teaching Chemistry and ChemicalEngineering as a Career prospect. The sessionwas concluded with a visit to the Chemistry

lab. The valedictory function was presided overby Dr. K. Kasturi, Dean, SSNCE. There wasalso a feedback session where the participantsspoke about what they liked and suggestions asto what could be improved.

On behalf of the Executive Committeemembers, I request all the Student BranchCounselors to follow the above guidelinesscrupulously by recalling the saying, “HELPUS TO HELP YOU”.

A no. of events such as FDPs/Conferences/ Special Lectures/Workshops inassociation with IEEE Madras Section havebeen organized by our student branches andengineering colleges. Our Execom members haveparticipated in these events enthusiastically.These events have been reported in detail inthe newsletter.Let me conclude my message by recallingthe words of Francis Bacon“It is not what we eat that makes us strong,but what we digest that makes us strong.It is not what we earn that makes us rich, butwhat we save that makes us rich.It is not what we read that makes usknowledgeable but what we understand thatmakes us knowledgeable.It is not what we preach that makes usprofessional but what we practice that makesus true professional”

TECH EXPO’10 at M. Kumarasamy College of Engineering

The grand event “TECH EXPO ‘10” washeld on 28th Feb and on 1st Mar 2010 at M.Kumarasamy College of Engineering, Karur. TheIEEE Student Branch of the college joined handsin this technical exhibition by conducting a“Project Presentation” on the first day of TechExpo’10, and allowing the students from variouscolleges to exhibit their innovative ideas. Theresponse was good with nearly 148 abstractsfrom various colleges and 22 best projects wereshort listed for display.

The chief guest at the inaugural functionwas Mr.M. Subramanian, Assistant General

Manager of Tamilnadu Newsprint and PapersLimited (TNPL), Karur. Secretary Er. K.Ramakrishnan, principal Dr. D. Valavan, BranchMentor Dr. S. Chitra, Branch Advisor Prof. V.Kavitha and our Branch Counselor Prof. K.Sundararaju participated in the function. J.Gouthaman, Chairperson of IEEE StudentBranch welcomed the gathering. The vote ofthanks was given by S.Gokul Raj, ViceChairperson of IEEE Student Branch.

The chief guest examined the projectson display. He enquired the students on itsapplications and its working concepts. He

apprehended the efforts driven by the studentsand appreciated them for their committedinvolvement. To the participants surprise, Publicand school students from Karur and Velur, wereallowed to visualize and explore the projects.They were really happy and induced by thepositive comments from the public.

The projects were analyzed and enquiredby a qualified team of jury’s compromising ofsenior lecturerers from various departments. The1st prize was bagged by the students from RVSCollege of Engineering, Dindigul and received acash award of Rs.1500. The 2nd prize went tothe students from Muthayammal College ofEngineering, Namakkal and they were awardedRs.1000. The 3rd prize and a cash award ofRs.750 were received by the students fromS.R.M Institute of Technology. The prizewinners were awarded by the Branch advisor,Branch Mentor and the Branch Counselorrespectively. All the participants were providedwith participation certificates.

Faculty Development Programme on “Natural Computation in Engineering”

The IEEE Madras Section in associationwith the Dept. of Electrical and ElectronicsEngineering, Velammal Engineering College,Chennai organized a Faculty DevelopmentProgramme (FDP) on the topic “NaturalComputation in Engineering” on 6th and 7thFeb 2010. This was the 13th FDP in a series ofprograms aimed at improving the quality ofteaching in Engineering Colleges in Tamilnadu.

The programme was attended by 49faculty members of colleges and universitiesfrom all over Tamilnadu. The co-ordinators ofthis FDP were Dr. N. Kumarappan, Professor,

Annamalai University and IEEE MadrasSection Excom Member, Dr. P. Chidambaram,Professor of EEE, Velammal Engg. College andDr. C. Christober Asir Rajan, AssociateProfessor of EEE, Pondycherry Engg. College.

The programme started with an inauguralfunction in which Major. V V. Chandrasekharn,Treasurer IEEE Madras Section delivered theinaugural address.

The Resource Persons for this programwere Dr. N Kumarappan from AnnamalaiUniversity, Dr. C. Christober Asir Rajan from

Pondycherry Engg. College, Dr. GSaravanakumar from IIT Madras and Dr. V. S.Srinivasan, Scientific Officer, IGCAR.

The topics covered include: NeuralComputation, Evolutionary Computation,Swarm Intelligence, Artificial Immune Systems,Ant Colony Search, Simulated Annealing andFuzzy Logic. There were demos on NeuralNetwork and Fuzzy Logic Techniques.

The program ended with a valedictoryfunction which was presided by Mr. H.R.Mohan, Associate Vice President (Systems),The Hindu and the Chair of IEEE ComputerSociety, Madras Chapter.

The program received an excellentfeedback from the participants and they werehappy as it provided a very good opportunityfor them to listen and interact with the expertson various natural computation issues.

MBLAZZE’10: IEEE Awareness and Enhancementprogramme at Kumaraguru College of Technology

The IEEE students’ chapter ofKumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatorehad conducted the IEEE Awareness andEnhancement programme, MBLAZZE’10, on20th of Feb 2010. MBLAZZE’10, an inter-college event had a participation of 80 studentsfrom various engineering colleges.

The occasion got under way with theprayer song. The event was convened by Mrs.V.Sharmila Deve, IEEE coordinator and Mrs.R. Kavitha. Mr.Gridhari, coordinator Mblazze-

10 welcomed the gathering. Mrs.V.SharmilaDeve and R. Kavitha explained the benefits ofIEEE and Value of IEEE Membership. Dr. P.A.Balakrishnan, HoD, EEE provided tips andways to improve innovation concepts in paperpresentation. The event was conducted to createa new platform for the students in an innovativeway. The event included quiz competition,debate, and paper presentation.

The difference that is put forward in thequiz competition was it had a quick fashionwhere knowledge with presence of mind wasthe criteria. The students made it much difficultto scrutinize and the winners were awarded withcash prize and merit certificate.

In the debate, the ongoing social andtechnical issues ranging from drastic climate toethics in corporate were debated and thestudent’s brainstorming brought out mindblowing innovations and perfect ideas worthexpert considerations. The students exercised

their team spirit along with exploring theirindividual personalities in the forum.

The paper presentation was conductedwith the criteria such as student’s owncontribution in the paper, the depth of thecontribution and originality. Out of 75 papersfrom 50 colleges, 30 were selected under threecategories. The final stage faced severecompetition and multiple judges were neededto come to a much agreed result. The winnerswere awarded with cash prizes and meritcertificates.

The students had variety ofopportunities as volunteers, organizers andparticipants and they exhibited multitude oftalents. Many expressed their desire to conductsimilar events in their colleges. The IEEEmembership advantages were explained and thevast opportunity of knowledge on various fieldsand networking with experts were highlightedto students. The event received a great applausefrom the participants and provided a sense ofsuccess to the organizers.

ICWCSC 2010: International Conference on “Wireless Communication andSensor Computing” held at SSN

General Information

SSN is an institution that aspires alwaysto be in the forefront of research. With the growthof wireless communication, sensor computingwill assume a greater role in meeting the needsof the society. To fulfill these important needsof society, SSN put forward itself by hosting athree day International Conference on “WirelessCommunication and Sensor Computing”,ICWCSC 2010 organized by the Departmentsof ECE & IT during Jan 02-04, 2010.

ICWCSC 2010 intended to promoteresearch activities in various areas of WirelessCommunication, Sensor Networks, Mobile Adhoc Networks and Cognitive Radio byproviding a forum for exchange of ideas, bringing

the Scientists, Engineers, and Researcherstogether to showcase the exciting and challengingdevelopments in their research work, developinteraction among them and discuss the futuredirections in this area.

The conference had attracted a total of273 papers from around the globe. The expertpanel members of the technical committee andreview committee had a challenging task ofreviewing the papers submitted. The TechnicalProgram Committee recommended 65 papersfor presentation at the conference and forpublications in IEEE Xplore. The InternationalAdvisory Committee had envisaged acomprehensive technical program of 6 sessionsthat covered a broad spectrum of topics inWireless Communication, Ad hoc Networks,

Cognitive radio and Sensor Networks.

As a part of three-day conference, twopre-conference tutorials were organized on dayone, 2nd January 2010. The first Tutorial on“Distributed Sensor Networks” was offered byDr. S.S. Iyengar, Professor and Chairman,Department of Computer Science, LSU, USA.,The second tutorial on “Cognitive Radio –Technical Overview”, was offered by Dr. DavidKoilpillai, Professor, Department of ElectricalEngineering, IITM, Chennai in the forenoonsession and Dr. P. H. Rao, SAMEER, Chennai

shared his relevant knowledge on “AntennaDesign Challenges for Cognitive Radio” in theafternoon.

Inaugural Session

The conference was inaugurated by Dr.S. Shanmughavel, Registrar, Anna UniversityChennai on 3rd January 2010. Dr. S.Shanmughavel delivered the inaugural addressand also released the Conference Proceedingsand Souvenir. Mr. Naresh Kumar, GeneralManger, South Asia Pacific, ApplicationEngineering Organization, Agilent Technologieswas the guest of honour. Dr. S. Salivahanan,General Chair, ICWCSC 2010, Principal, SSNCollege of Engineering and Chairman of IEEEMadras Section, welcomed the gathering andDr. S. Radha, Conference Chair, ICWCSC 2010,Professor and Head, Department of ECEpresented the conference highlights andprogramme details while introducing the chiefguest. Dr. T. Nagarajan, Conference Chair,ICWCSC 2010, Professor and Head,Department of IT introduced the guest of honour.

Technical ProgramTechnical Sessions

Following the conference inauguration,the technical sessions were scheduled on Jan3rd and Jan 4th in six sessions chaired by 12invitees from academia and industry. About 150participants including 70 outsiders participatedin the conference. Around 30 research papershave been presented by the authors.

The papers covered many topics but

reflected the growing with an increasing focuson security and routing issues in WSNs andMANETs, Wireless Communication, RFID andUnderwater Communication.

Keynote Addresses and Invited Talks

In addition to the normal technicalsessions, the technical program also includeseight keynote speeches. The four keynotespeeches on Day Two, January 03, 2010 were“Criteria and Strategies for SensorDeployment”, delivered by Dr. Sartaj Sahni,Professor and Chair, Department of Computerand Information Science and Engineering,University of Florida, USA, “Exo-Scale Studies:Algorithm for the Scattering Amplitude” by Dr.Paul Saylor, Professor, Computer ScienceDepartment, Louisiana State University and theUniversity of Illinois, USA, “Latest ResearchTrends in Broadband Communications” by Dr.Arokiaswami Alphones, Associate Professor ofSchool of Electrical & Electronic Engineering,NTU, Singapore, “Evolution of 802.11 WLANs”by Dr. S. Srikanth, Member Research Staff, AU-KBC Research Centre, MIT Campus, AnnaUniversity Chromepet, Chennai.

On Day Three, January 04, 2010, thefour keynotes were “3GPP” delivered by Dr.S. Sricharan, Project Engineer, WiproTechnologies, Chennai, “LTE Architecture andProtocol”, by Dr. Jackson Juliet Roy, SpecialistDesign & Development (Wireless Domain), TataElxsi Ltd, Chennai, “Emerging MobileBroadband Technologies - What and How willthey deliver?” by Dr. K. Giridhar, AssociateProfessor, Department of Electrical Engineering,

IITM, Chennai, “RF Sensor Networks forImproved Signal Detection and Geo-location”by Ms. Sonali Sarpotdar, Technical Consultant,Agilent Technologies Pvt., Ltd, Chennai.

All sessions, including tutorial sessions,oral sessions, and keynote sessions wereextremely well attended and produced activediscussions. The conference banquet was heldon the evening of 3rd January 2010 at QualityHotel Sabari Classic, Chennai.

A CD-ROM containing all the papers ofthe conference, the details about ICWCSC 2010and the summary of pre-conference tutorialsand keynote addresses/invited talks wasprovided to each delegate.

Dr. Raj Reddy, Professor ofComputer Science & Robotics Department,Carnegie Mellon University delivered thevaledictory address and distributed certificatesto the participants. The Best Paper award waspresented to Bashir Ahmad, Zeeshan ShafiKhan, Adeel Akhtar for their paper titled “AnEnergy Efficient, Modified Hybrid AdaptiveIntraCluster Routing for Wireless SensorNetworks”. Dr. S. Salivahanan welcomed thegathering. Ms. Kala Vijayakumar, President,SSN Institutions delivered the presidentialaddress. Dr. S. Radha introduced the ChiefGuest and Mr. I. Joe Louis Paul, OrganizingSecretary, ICWCSC 2010, Assistant Professor,Dept. of IT, SSN CE proposed vote of thanks.

Guest Lecture on “Industrial Automation Using PLC”at Arunai Engineering College

A guest lecture on “Industrial AutomationUsing PLC” was organized by the Arunai IEEEStudent Branch on the topic on 12th of Jan2010. The Chief Guest was Mr. Gopu, ControlLogix, Pondicherry. The Chief Guest washonored by Mr. M. Arumugam, Director, R&D.Mr. Selvarasu, HoD, EIE welcomed thegathering and Mr. Arumugam offeredfelicitations. The participants at the programmewere pre-final year students of departmentsCSE, EIE and EEE.

The technical session started with a talk

by Ms. Sivakami, student member & 3rd yearEIE on “Medicine by Micro Machine”.Following this, a short introduction on the topicwas given by Mr. Kumaravel, staff member andEEE Dept. coordinator.

The Chief Guest addressed theparticipants in the remaining of the session,explaining about automation and its principleand working. He demonstrated a practical modelof an automated machine, which attracted thestudents greatly and made them attend the talkwith enthusiasm and interest. His presentationwas aided by many animated slides, whichimplanted the concepts of how an automatedmachine works into greater depths. He alsopresented a few clippings on real timeapplications in his company. There was a greatdeal of interaction from the students. This wasfollowed by another talk by Mr. B.S. Arun,student member & 2nd year ECE on “Wind

Energy”, an extract from the Spectrum.

On the whole, it was a very useful andmotivating day that helped the students to knowmore about the advancements in the area ofindustrial automation. The programme endedwith a vote of thanks by Ms. G. Preethi, studentmember & 3rd year CSE.

Motivation Program at Jeppiaar Engineering College

IEEE student branch of JeppiaarEngineering College organized “MotivationProgram for the first Years” on 12th February2010.The chief guests and speakers for the eventwere Mr. Jaison Abey Sabu, Mentor ,MadrasSection Pilot Project, R10 Global Integrated

Network of IEEE (GINI) Member, StudentActivities Board, IEEE Kerala Section and RanjitNair, Student Mentor, Madras Section. Bothof them were most effective in actuating themind’s of the first years.

Mr.Jaison explained the various benefitsassociated with IEEE membership.Heemphasized that networking with other peopleand working together was one of the mainadvantages and the aim of IEEE membership.He kept the gathering intact with his frequentwitty and healthy interactions. The first yearshad a spanking and rattling time responding tohim. He also briefed on the Spectrum Magazinewhich is of immense use and its importance to

the engineers of tomorrow.

Mr. Ranjith Nair in his synergisticsession he brought out the talents of the firstyears by making them exhibit their talents. Itwas an astonishing and astounding session inwhich students had moments of gaiety andenjoyment .The students had become obliviousof the surroundings and understood the wholeaim of this program and we had successfullyaccomplished it through our esteemed andcharismatic speakers. In this endeavor, we hadthe able support of our chairman Dr. Jeppiaar,our dynamic directors Mr. Marie Wilson,Mrs.Regena Wilson and our branch counselorMr. Sellakumar.

Techstallion at Kongu Engineering CollegeTechstallion - an everlasting, innovative

technical stall conducted by the IEEE studentbranch of Kongu Engineering College and itsaffinity group WIE on 5th and 6th of Feb 2010in order to exhibit the IEEE student branchactivities of our college. The day picked upwith an enthusiastic support from the studentsof KEC and also from the public. The youngbudding pillars of India, the school studentsexpressed their interest in knowing about whatis all about IEEE and what it does in Engineering.Techstallion aimed at creating awareness aboutthe benefits of IEEE membership.

The stall featured the copies of SpectrumMagazine, IEEE newsletter and other IEEEjournals. The students of our college and various

other colleges also showed a great interest inknowing the IEEE membership benefits. InTechstallion, we also conducted events like“Flash your Innovation” (Multimedia Contest),and “Flick your Click” (Photography Contest),where more than 60 students participated andwon prizes. The multimedia presentation wasabout this solution to overcome the existingcleavage and political crimes. OverallTechstallion projected the IEEE student branchof Kongu Engineering College and the IEEEmembership benefits to a large audience throughOpen House Exhibition at Kongu EngineeringCollege.

Workshop on “Computer Hardware Installationand Servicing” at Coimbatore Institute ofEngineering and Information Technology

IEEE Students Branch of CIET hadorganized a one day workshop on “ComputerHardware Installation and Servicing” for thebenefit of all the IEEE student members of thecollege on 30th Jan 2010.

Mr.B.Saravanan, IEEE Student BranchCounselor inaugurated the programme andintroduced the speakers Mr.S.Prem Babu,Manager – Servicing and S.Ramesh, Customer

Support Executive from Zenith Computers whoconducted the workshop. In the morningsession, the experts listed out the majorcomponents of the computers (motherboard,processor, memory systems, plug and playdevices, interfacing components, and expansionslots) and described the functionality of eachcomponent. They also explained variousprocessor architectures.

Practical session was conducted in theafternoon for the students. A model PC wasbrought and various components inside the PCwere shown to the audience. Practical demo ofWindows Server 2007 and Linux installationwere also done. At the end, students interactedwith experts and clarified their doubts.Certificates were distributed to all the studentparticipants at the end of the programme.

5. The representatives of the society chapterspresent (PES, TMC, CS, COMSOC, WIE,GOLD, IAS) briefly presented on theiractivities during the year 2009.

6. Dr. P. Suresh Chander Pal, chair studentsactivities explained about GINI activitiesand also highlighted about the increase inthe student branches during the year 2009.

7. To encourage the Student Branches andSocieties to organize more activities,certificate of appreciation and cash awardswere presented to different student branchesand societies.

8. All the outgoing and incoming Execommembers and the society chairs presentwere felicitated during the meeting.

9. The Treasurer, Mrs. Ramalatha presentedthe treasurer’s report for the year 2009and clarified the queries raised by themembers.

9.1 The treasurer’s report was approved subjectto the changes suggested during the queriesby the members. It was proposed byShankaranarayanan and seconded by Dr.Renganath Muthu.

9.2 The current auditors were re-appointed andthe existing terms and remuneration withthe approval of the member present at theAGM.

9.3 The members present were informed thatthe IEEE Madras Section Auditor will bemade available at the AGM to clarify thequeries by the members from the next AGMonwards.

10. The incoming Chairman, Dr. T.Thyagarajan welcomed the new theExecom members for the Year 2010 andassured that the activity level of the sectionwould be maintained with the support ofthe members and also outlined some of theimportant activities to be carried out bythe Section in 2010.

11. A hearty vote of thanks was proposed bythe Secretary, Dr. N. R. Alamelu.
