At the outset, on behalf of the Executivecommittee of IEEE Madras Section, I wish youa very happy and prosperous new year 2011. Iam sure you would have made some resolutionson the new year eve. May the Almighty blessyou the will power for the successfulimplementation of all those resolutions you havemade. In my December 2010 message, I
presented some details on GATE-2011. Now, it is the placementseason. All the final year student members will be preparing well forfacing the interviews. Top companies select the candidates based ontheir performance in the written test (both technical and aptitude), groupdiscussion, interview (both technical and HR) and of course with weightagefor the academic performance. SPAVE’10 at Kongu Enginering College
At Kongu Engineering College, the IEEEstudent branch activities of even semesterstarted with SPAVE 10, an interdepartmentalfunction for the IEEE members conducted on11th Dec 2010.
The zeal began by seeking God’s blessingsthrough payer. Prof. K.Narayanan, StaffAdvisor, IEEE - KEC delivered the welcome
address. He appreciated the activities conductedby IEEE and added that it’s his pride to be apart of it. Inaugural function was presided overby Prof. S.Kuppuswami, principal of KonguEngineering College.
The day geared up with the paperpresentation event. The papers presentedrepresented a wide range including most of thepromising technologies like space powersystem, wireless technology etc. It wasfollowed by Idea Generation event where instudents came up with their innovative ideasand offered new perspectives in engineeringcommunity.
The afternoon session started withMultimedia presentation which helped studentsto incorporate their knowledge in software. Thetheme for presentation was terrorism and the
students came out with their alluringpresentations. The Project presentation wasconducted simultaneously and many studentsimplemented their ideas as projects. Variousspot events were conducted to keep the sessionlively and active.
Valedictory function was initiatedwith the welcome address delivered byMr K.Sharath Kumar, Executive Head, IEEE.It was followed by the prize distribution to thewinners of various events. Prof.K.Narayanan,Staff co-ordinator, IEEE-KEC gave theValedictory Address. Vote of thanks wasproposed by Neha Gupta, Secretary, WIE-KEC.Finally the function came to an end byextending the gratitude to mother land throughnational anthem. On the whole SPAVE-10was a blast with loads of innovation andcreativity.

International Student Tutorial Meet
On 15th, the tutorial meet was inauguratedby Dr. K.C. Gowda Former Vice Chancellor ofKuvempu University.
First tutorial which gave an insight on“Image Processing and its Applications”, waspresented by Dr. S. Rakshit, Head ComputerVision, CAIR, Bangalore. This tutorial coverageincluded: an overview on multi resolution,Filtering techniques, Burt pyramids wavelet,Aliasing effects on edges with various real timeexamples, Image magnification, Noise reduction inimages, PC based noise reduction, Multi resolutioncoring, Image restoring, Image registration, Imagemosaic, Segmentation (Image /Video), Image andvideo fusion and its applications.
The second tutorial was on “SemanticWeb and Linked Data”. It was presented by Dr.Monika Solanki, Professor, University ofLeicester, U.K. The tutorial highlighted on:Motivation towards the Semantic Webapplication moving from Syntactic Web(Current web), Overview on Semantic Web andits technologies, Data linking and variousapplications, Ontology concepts, Structure ofontology and its needs, Ontology language forSemantic Web, Ontology engineering onSemantic Web, Resource DescriptionFramework (RDF), OWL.
These tutorials were attended by over
100 students of which two were from Australiaand two were from UK.
Conference on Signal & Image Processing
On 15th Dec 2010 evening, after thetutorial meet, the conference was inauguratedby Dr. P. Mannar Jawahar, Vice Chancellor,Anna University Chennai. Mr.T.S. Out of the 350 research papers receivedfrom 16 countries including India 105 wereselected for presentation which included 15papers from abroad. During the conference, 75papers were presented on different areas likeimage processing, computer vision, signalprocessing and data mining. The papers werepresented by two delegates from abroad and73 from premier institutions like IIT Delhi, IITMumbai, IIT Hyderabad, IISC Bangalore, ISIKolkata, IGCAR, TIFR, Tata InnovationLaboratory, NIT Warangal, NIT Dhurgapur,NIT Suratkul and NIT Trichy presented theirresearch papers in the conference.
On 16th and 17th Dec, three keynoteaddresses were delivered. The first one wasdelivered by Dr. K. Chidnanda Gowda, FormerVice Chancellor, Kuvempu University, Advisor,Wipro, Bangalore. It was on the theme of theconference “Signal and Image Processing”. Thesecond keynote address was by Dr. Dipti PrasadMukherjee, Professor, ISI Calcutta on “Organshape visualization using statistical shapemodel”. The third keynote address was by Dr.P. Nagabhushan, Professor, University of Mysoredelivered on “Research problems around us:Image processing based futuristic problems”.
On the second and third day, the researchpapers were presented in four parallel tracksnamely Image processing, Document processing& computer vision, Bio metrics & Bio medicalsignal processing and Data mining. Theinternational journal “Image and ComputerVision” by ELSEVIER and MAJLEST, IRANJournal of Electrical Engineering have proposedto bring out special issues based on the paperspresented in this conference.
During the conference, IEEE-ICSIPawards were presented to Dr. Dipti PrasadMukherjee, ISI Kolkata and Dr. L. Ganesan,ACCET, Karaikudi for their achievements inImage Processing and Pattern Recognition areaover a decade.
At the valedictory function, Prof. P.Thrimuthy, President, CSI addressed theparticipants on the importance of research incutting edge technologies and highlighted therole of CSI in this direction. Dr. C.R.Chakravarthy, Convener, CSI-SIG onInformation Security (CSI-SIG-IS) recommendedand announced that RMD Engineering Collegecould be nominated as a CSI Research Centrein Information Security being promoted byCSI-SIG-IS.
The conference was attended by over 200participants which included researchers,academic faculty, students and industryprofessionals. The conf. proceedings both inprint and on CD were released at the inauguralsession.

The event International Conference onFrontiers in Automobile and MechanicalEngineering – 2010 [FAME -2010] was organizedby Sathyabama University in association withAshok Leyland, SAEINDIA, Southern Section,Chennai, and IEEE Madras Section. The motiveof the conference is to create live opportunitiesfor Industrialists, Scientists, Engineers,Technocrats, Research Scholars and Studentsto discuss and formulate some innovativedirections for the future of the fast moving worldof automobiles.
The Chief Guests for the internationalconference are Mr. Asit K Barma, Chairman,SAE INDIA, Southern Section, Chennai, Dr. G.Krishnamoorthy, Professor Emeritus, San DiegoState University, USA, Dr. Ing Helmut Wolf,Chairman, QNET quality Network, Germanyand Dr. R. Mahadevan, Group TechnologyDirector, India Pistons Ltd, Chennai. They weregiven a warm and colourful welcome by thestaff and students of Sathyabama University.
Inaugural Function- 25-11-2010:
The International Conference started
with auspicious singing of the Tamil ThaiValzthu. Welcoming the gathering, Dr Sasi Prabha,Dean of Sathyabama University, called uponthe scientific community to actively cooperatein meeting the objective of the conference.
In his Presidential address Dr.Jeppiaar theChancellor of Sathyabama University highlightedthe importance of the collaboration of softwarewith hardware in the mechanical and automobileproduction. He stressed that infrastructureshould be made suitable for the growing needsof the mechanical and automobile engineeringindustry.
Dr. G. Krishnamoorthy in his inauguraladdress pointed out that the development inthe field of automobile engineering can only savethe planet. He added that light weight, recyclableand low energy consuming cars are the need ofthe hour.
Mr.Asit K Barma mentioned that Indiahas made progress in IT, manufacturing etc. Indianow leads in driven manufacturing. Chennaihas been the focus of all car manufacturingcompanies to set up their factories in and around
Chennai. It is now on par with Germany in theproduction of Cars.
Dr. R. Mahadevan in the keynote addressstated that climate change and sustainabilitywere linked with the mobility and mechanicalindustry. Emission reduction, sustainability,fuel flexibility, affordability, safety, recyclabilityand bad infrastructure are the challenges facedby automobile industry. These challengesshould be successfully tackled by the futuregeneration of the automobile industry.
The Technical Sessions:
The Conference featured presentationsby eminent national and international expertson various aspects of automobile and mechanicalengineering. The presentations were groupedinto twelve different technical sessions to coverthe topics including Composite Materials,Internal combustion Engines, ThermalEngineering, Production Engineering,Engineering Design, Automobile Engineering.

A three day workshop on PythonProgramming was organized by the StudentBranches of IEEE, IEEE Computer Society &Computer Society of India of RajalakshmiEngineering College (REC), Chennai during 20-22, Dec 2010. The workshop was supportedby IEEE Madras Section and IEEE ComputerSociety, Madras Chapter.
Python is an open source, high-level andpowerful programming language that is wellsuited for scientific computing. The aim of theworkshop was to provide training to thestudents on the use and benefits of Open SourceSoftware and the following aspects of PythonProgramming was covered:
Introduction to Python programming

Workshop on Python Programming at Rajalakshmi Engineering College
Functions & Modules
File Handling, Matrix & Arrays
Scientific Tools & Applications
The workshop started with welcomeaddress by Dr. S. Renganarayanan, Principal,REC. The introductory talk about the workshopwas given by Dr. Sheila Anand, ExecutiveCommittee Member, IEEE Madras Section &Treasurer, IEEE Computer Society, MadrasChapter. The workshop comprised of lecturesinterleaved with hands-on training.

The workshop received an excellentfeedback from the participants and they hadappreciated the method of delivery, modelprograms and the hands-on exercise.The participants were provided with coursematerial and other reading material in a DVD.Mr. Rahul Sundaram, Red Hat India Pvt. Ltd.provided Fedora -14 Linux DVD to allparticipants.

The valedictory function was held on 27th
Nov. 2010 at the university campus. The Dean,conference and publications appreciated thetremendous efforts of various departments andwelcomed the participants and the chief guests tothe valedictory function. In the presidential address.
Dr. Jeppiaar, The chancellor, SathyabamaUniversity, stressed the idea that the womenfolk should come forward to study mechanical,automobile and production engineering. Headded that now-a-days computers are playing avital role in the automobile and machinemanufacturing industries. Dr. Jeppiaar pointedout that though a very few participants are fromabroad, the conference was really aninternational conference because it has got thevaluable thoughts presented by the Indians whoare wiser than the foreign delegates.

conference. He distributed the cash prize of $1000to 12 best paper presenters of the conference.Also, awards were given to three best Exhibitors
and three Model contest winners.

Seshasayee Paper and Boards Limited,Pallipalayam, on 2nd Dec 2010. The industrialvisit was initiated by Dr. S. Thangavel, HOD,Department of Electrical and Electronics.
Mr.K.Ramani, Assistant Professor,Department of Electrical and ElectronicsEngineering accompanied the Post Graduatestudents of Power Electronics and PowerSystem for the Industrial visit. During theIndustrial visit, the students gained exposureto microcontroller based applications and powerelectronics applications in the paper industry.

IEEE conducted IEEE Xtreme 4.0 (24hour programming competition) exclusively forthe IEEE members. Nearly 1000 members from
all over the world participated in thiscompetition.
Active participation of student membersfrom our branch proved to be a good start forthe progress of the branch. This contestprovided an opportunity for the students toshowcase their skills in the programmingplatform and also helped the students to developtheir analytical ability.

Membership Drive at Jeppiaar EngineeringCollege
IEEE Student Branch of JeppiaarEngineering College conducted a MembershipDrive on 8th December 2010 for the 1st year students.The program was aimed to provide theimportance of IEEE, its membership and services.
The membership drive commenced withthe Tamil Thai Vazhthu. Mr. Manoj Reddy, IIyear EEE student member, delivered thewelcome address. The introduction to IEEE, itsevolution, mission and vision, was laid by Ms.Madhuri Kala, II year, EEE, followed by Mr.Nivas Ravichandran, II year ECE and Mr.Sharon Roy, II year EIE, who highlighted thebenefits of membership through an interactivesession.
Ms. Apoorva Naidu, II year ECE andMs. Divya, II year EIE briefed the events
occurring around the globe and within thestudent branch as well. Snehaline, III year, ECEstudent member, emphasized the values ofmembership.
The overall session was outstandingwhich enabled students to know about role ofIEEE throughout their engineering career. Around400 students participated in this program. Theconclusion was marked by the motivational talkby our student Chair, Mr. B Anand and ViceChair, Mr. Rohit Jeydev. The session receivedan exemplary feedback. The program ended withthe National Anthem.

Workshop on Embedded System Design andProgramming at Sri Venkateswara College ofEngineering
The IEEE student branch of SriVenkateswara College of Engineering,Sriperumbudur, conducted a two day workshopon Embedded System Design and Programmingfor the students of the college on 6th and 14th
December 2010.
The workshop was tutored by theChairman of the IEEE-SVCE student branchMathew Cherian C and the SecretaryVivekanand V.
On the first day (6th Dec 2010) of theworkshop, the participants were given anintroduction to designing power supplies forembedded systems and the various constraints
involved in the same. The participants werealso familiarised with programming the Atmega16 microcontroller in Embedded C using AVRStudio.
On the second day (4th Dec 2010) of theworkshop, the participants were encouragedto write a program to control the working ofa simple robotic vehicle. The participantswere then asked to develop embedded solutionsfor different problem statements. Ademonstration on how to use PCB layoutsoftware and use the design to etch PCBs athome was also shown.

Abstract
This paper attempts to analyse the globalwarming & climate change phenomenon. In thecontext of its impact on the planet and prevailinggeo-politics, it dwells on the consequences forIndia. Drawing on the response of thegovernment and the plans of the PMO- PrimeMinister’s Office, viz NMEEE - ‘NationalMission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency’, itelucidates the measures which will have criticalimpact on the Indian economy. It promotes‘Energy Efficiency’ as a resource, not amethodology.
It also mentions the variegated role ofindustry in meeting the challenge, for an‘inclusive growth’ of the economy viz based on‘Energy Intensity’ as against ‘Per capitaCapping’ strategy. Apart from various measuresin technology infusion and capacity building incompetencies, it specifically brings out theimportance of accurate metering of energy.Lessons can be learnt, in terms of a more unifiedapproach, and institutional participation whichcan lead to genuine pervasive energy efficiency
Global Warming & Climate ChangePhenomenon
Global warming and climate change aredisasters, not waiting to happen in the future.Evidences of its impact, affecting ordinarypeople’s lives is surfacing every day. Meltingof polar ice caps and Himalayan glaciers, rise inocean temperatures and erosion of coastal lines,stark changes in seasons and impact of erraticrainfall are not just ‘News’, but naturalphenomena with definite consequences thatare actually being experienced. Scientific studieshave established depletion of the Ozone layer,rise in ocean temperatures and levels, increasein CO2 levels and daytime temperatures in urbanhabitats.
Challenges & India’s Response
In the last two hundred years, the worldhas been impacted by the discovery of fossilfuels and use of electrical energy as primarydrivers for phenomenal changes in the globaleconomy. People’s lifestyles & leisure have beenaffected in no small measure. Fruits oftechnology and the globalization of internationaleconomy are fuelling aspirations across thecontinents. That better quality of daily life ispossible, is driving political systems and at thesame time shattering earlier known philosophies
Global Climate Change Challenges - Role of Metering & Proposed Public Policy
and ideologies. No country can avoid the effectof globalization and climate change. Thus Indiatoo has to face this challenge in a ‘Glocal’ . Thefollowing paragraphs will examine the nationalresponse and in the context of the geo-politicaleconomy, how technological interventions andpolicy measures can bring about beneficialchanges. It will also bring home the importanceof metering of energy be it oil/gas, steam, andelectricity/water. With a thrust on effectiveimplementation, the Indian response has thepotential to be a role setting example for therest of the world
Post ‘Montreal Protocol’ and ‘KyotoProtocol’, the Government of India defined aneight point action plan (NAPCC) to meet thechallenges of Climate Change and GlobalWarming. Apart from the National SolarMission, Water Mission etc, it is the NMEEE-‘National Mission for Enhanced EnergyEfficiency’ that is aimed to bring about acomprehensive change to the energyconsumption pattern in the economy. A uniqueaspect of the policy is our focus to limit ourgreen house gas emissions by way of an ‘EnergyIntensity’ intervention rather than a limit/capon ‘per capita consumption’. By leapfrogginginto more modern technologies and investmentsin them, even as we grow in all our industrial &infrastructural sectors, it can provide an‘inclusive growth model, as against the prevalenthigh consumption models which pervade therest of the industrialised world. Based on thecurrent projections the initiatives are expectedto yield savings of 10,000 MW by 2012.
Bureau of Energy Efficiency-Policy Measures
Building on the recent (2010)amendments to the Energy Conservation Act2001, the plans recommends
Mandating specific energy consumptiondecreases in large energy-consumingindustries, with a system for companiesto trade Energy-savings certificates. Ninesectors have been identified for energysavings with over 700 sites, which have alarge savings potential. Energy audits arelikely to be mandatory for setting unitwise benchmarks for energy consumption.The amended ‘Energy Conservation Actof 2009/2010 provides for quantifyingenergy savings into ‘Energy Certificates’,which can be traded locally in localEnergy Exchanges like ‘India PowerExchange’. The act also provides forlevying stiff penalties for units floutingtheir own benchmarking exercises
Financial incentives, including reducedtaxes on energy-efficient appliances.Through a series of exercises conductedby BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency),energy consuming appliances like airconditioners, refrigerators, pumps,motors, TV sets & washing machineshave been rated/graded on the basis oftheir energy consumption. With industryvoluntarily accepting this ‘Star Labelling’format, manufacturers have resorted towidespread dissemination of thisinformation, through media & tradechannels. More black box products arelikely to come under similar policyinterventions. This is likely to lead to‘Market Transformation’ of energyconsuming gadgets
F i n a n c i n g f o r p u b l i c - p r i v a t ep a r t n e r s h i p s t o r e d u c e e n e r g yconsumption through demand sidemanagement programs in the municipal,buildings and agricultural sectors. Publicfinancing interventions like ‘Partial RiskGuarantee Facility’ to provide back-to-back guarantees to banks so as to reducethe perceived risks of these projects andanother ‘Venture Capi ta l Fund’to support manufacturing of energyefficient products & services are on theanvil
Capacity building in services forpromoting/fostering energy efficiencythrough ESCO companies, establishingEnergy Consultancies and inter-institutional mechanisms.
Response of Indian Industry
Industry on its part is promoting EnergyEfficiency practices through various schemes like
Formation of industry sector specificcooperation missions for Cement, Paper,Power & Steel as examples. Through aseries of inter company meetings in openforums, through information sharing anddata exchange, world class efficiencies arefostered.
Institution of Energy Awards programmesto promote voluntary energy efficiencymeasures.
International and inter-governmentalprogrammes to connect to agencies acrossthe world, particularly the developedcountries.

Thus both government and industry areactively involved in all measures and policieswhich will lead to substantial reduction inenergy consumption, by the year 2015
Bureau of Indian Standards & ISO-50001Energy Management Standard
One of the major inputs into this policyis the formulation of a new Energy ManagementStandard under ISO /International StandardizationOrganization. BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards)with support from industry and BEE (Bureauof Energy Efficiency) is likely to introduce thismeasure called ISO 50001 Energy ManagementStandard, into the Indian Market by the middleof 2011.Similiar to the ISO 9000 Standards,which revolutionised the Indian industrial sectorway back in the nineties, ISO 50001 EnergyManagement Standard is slated to drive theenergy efficiency market into high gear, enablingIndia to meet its international obligations.
Crititicality of Metering
One of the important facets of the new
standard is the role of energy audits to quantifyenergy savings and establish the energy savings
potential of the process. Having established this
benchmark exercise, it envisages maintenanceof energy efficiency through close control of
the process and other quality measures like fuel
quality/quantity, energy output quantity/quality, wastage quantity/quality. These
measures necessitate accurate measurement of
fuel flow if it is a liquid or gas or weight in caseof solid fuels, output flow like steam flow or
compressed air or electrical energy metering etc.
In today’s technology measurement of wasteheat gases or hot condensate is also an important
part of the measurement process.
Thus metering is a very important aspectof energy efficiency measures any where. In
earlier applications of process controlinstrumentation, measurement of flow as a
parameter constituted over 65 % of all
measurements. In the newly emerging energy
management regime, flow is expected toconstitute over 80 % of all measurements.

Report on Energy Conservation Day & Seminar
With explosive increases in the prices offuel especially crude oil, the crisis faced onenergy front of our country is becoming seriouswith no quick solution insight. This being thenational scenario, the energy situation inTamilnadu is no way different. It is still inprecarious condition. Our state depends on windenergy a seasonal energy source and we all knowhow scarce power situation in our state is withpower cuts and load shedding. One of theimmediate measures to meet this situation is“Energy Conservation.” Considering thesignificance of Energy Conservation and tocreate an awareness amongst the consumersabout the difficult power situation.
Energy conservation day has beencelebrated on 14th Dec 2010 at Chennai. We allknow that it always pays to be different. Onrecognizing the valuable contribution made bythe captive power generation in facing thedifficult power situation and also theimportance of Energy conservation in HTIndustries and M/s Cummins India Ltd, Chennaihave jointly organized a Technical Seminar onthese topics at Chennai on 14th Dec 2010. Thesalient features of this seminar are brought outas follows.
Thiru A. K. Venkatasamy, PresidentTNEIEA delivered the welcome address. ThiruS. Appavoo, Chief Electrical Inspectorinaugurated the seminar and delivered theInaugural address. The chief guest brieflyexplained the significance of Energyconservation in all sectors and the need forutilizing energy efficient products.
On this occasion, Dr. G. V. Rao, chairman,Product Safety Engineering Society of IEEE,USA have made a presentation and explained
the benefits that would accrue by becoming amember in the above society. His presentationmainly focused on the need for the safety in thedesign and operation of all electrical equipmentand devices.
In the ensuing technical session threepresentations were made.
1. Energy conservation in HT industries:by Mrs .K. Selvam, Electrical Inspector(Tech), Chennai. This presentationmainly focused on the benefits that wouldaccrue to the industries by EnergyConservation and the areas in whichenergy savings could be achieved inadequate measures. Among the areascovered are:
Power delivery system
Motive power load
Compressed Air System
Lighting
Refrigeration and air conditioning
Pumps
The speaker then dealt in detail the lossescaused by Harmonics and the methods toeliminate it.
2. Captive Power Generation-EmergingTrends in DG Sets: by Mr. S. Shankar,Regional Manager, Cummins India Ltd.The speaker mainly focused on the issuesthat require attention while selecting aDG set. Among them are:
Generation and load mismatch
Unclear understanding of the natureof the load
Improper installation
Inadequate ventilation
Inadequate maintenance
Operation at low load levels
Maximum voltage drops (Starting andrunning)
Maximum frequency Dip
Incorrect specification of ambienttemperature and altitude
Use of Capacitors in DG sets forImproving the Power Factor.
3. Ideal installation guidelines for DGsets: by Mr. V. Lakshmanan, BDM HHPTN&KL. The speaker explained theissues connected with the installation ofDG sets with case studies and pictures.The maintenance aspects of DG setswere also explained in detail.
Finally the seminar was concluded witha questions and answers session. There werelively discussions. Thiru K. Sridharan, VicePresident from Powerica while thanking theparticipants and others, he specially mentionedMrs. K. Selvam, Electrical Inspector, for theexcellent speech in connection with the EnergyConservation and Harmonics. He alsomentioned Mr. S. Shankar, Regional Manager –HHP and Mr. V. Lakshmanan –BDM, HHP –TN & KL from Cummins, for their valuablepresentation for selecting the DG sets and otherinformation. Nearly 100 participants haveattended this seminar.
The attendees of this seminar have gotvery useful information on Product safetyengineering, Emerging trends in DieselGenerating Sets, Ideal installation of DG setsand Energy saving measures in HT Industries.
Seminar on “Network Security And EthicalHacking” at AVIT
IEEE Computer Society Branch Chapter- AVIT and Association of InformationTechnology Engineers, Dept of InformationTechnology, Aarupadai Veedu Institute ofTechnology organized a One Day Seminar on“Network Security and Ethical Hacking” on 11th
Oct 2010.
Mr. Ankit Fadia, Certified EthicalHacker, Computer Security and DigitalIntelligence Consultant, Silicon Valley,California, USA focused the Importance ofNetworking and explained the essential aspectsof Hacking and its Varieties.
Dr. (Mrs.) N.R. Alamelu Principal, AVIT,delivered the presidential Address. Dr. A.Anthony Irudhayaraj Dean (IT) AVITwelcomed the gathering and briefed theimportance of Network Security.
Faculty members and students fromvarious departments participated and benefitedby this seminar. Mr. C. Karthikeyan, HOD (IT)delivered the vote of thanks.
This competition recognizes students whodevelop unique solutions to real-world problemsusing engineering, science, computing andleadership skills to benefit their community orhumanity. Submissions should highlightpositive impact they have made on the world. The grand prize is US $10,000. Runner-upprizes include US $5,000, US $2,500, and US$1,000 awards.

INCOCCI-2010: International Conference on Communication andComputational Intelligence at Kongu Engineering College
The International Conference onCommunication and Computational Intelligence(INCOCCI-2010) was conducted during 27-29 Dec 2010 at Kongu Engineering College,Perundurai. The conference was jointlyorganized by the School of Communication andComputer Sciences and the School of ComputerTechnology and Applications of the College.
The Conference attracted good responsefrom researchers, faculty, students and otherstakeholders from various parts of India and
abroad. Out of over 400 papers received, afterscrutinizing by the technical committee, 120
papers were short listed.
The conference was inaugurated by Prof.Dr. K. Karunakaran, Vice-Chancellor, AnnaUniversity of Technology, Coimbatore. Thespecial address was given by Prof. Dr .P.Thrimurthy, President, Computer Society ofIndia. The key note address was given by Prof.Ir. Dr. Ahmad Fadzil Mohamad Hani, UniversityTeknologi Petronas, Malaysia. There were four
plenary talks given by experts from abroad onvaried topics like Latest Trends in EmbeddedSystems, Sensing for Better Life, Smart Mediaand Medical Systems and Latest Trends inBroadband Optical Communications.
The technical papers were presentedunder the following six sub-domains in threeparallel sessions: Advanced Networks;Communication and Embedded Systems;Informa t ion Sys tems a n d Secu r i t y ;Computa t ional In te l l igence; In ternetTechnologies and Advanced Computing.
The valedictory address was given byProf. Dr. P.A.Venkatachalam, Former Professor,Anna University, Chennai, UniversityTeknologi Petronas, Malaysia and AsianInstitute of Technology, Thailand.
There was intense interaction in theconference among the delegates and participantsand it provided a good opportunity for thestakeholders to deliberate on the variousdevelopments in the emerging technology areaswith a view to chalking out course of action forthe future.
