Technical Meeting on Global Warming

A technical meeting on the topic “GlobalWarming” by Dr. S. Renganathan,

Former Vice-Chancellor Bharath University& Former Dean MIT was organized jointlyby the IEEE Madras Section, IEEE PELS,Madras Chapter, on 18th Oct 2008.

Dr. S. Salivahanan, Chairman, IEEEMadras Section welcomed the gathering. Dr.Pappa, Excom Member, IEEE MadrasSection, introduced the speaker.

Dr. S. Renganathan, in his presentationstated that our mother earth is getting warmer, faster than what we expected and this rise inearth average temperature is due to green houseeffect. The energy from the sun enters the earththrough radiation at the optical visiblewavelength for which the atmosphere + co2layer is transparent. But when it gets reradiated

into the space, it is at the infrared wavelength(long waves) for which the atmosphere + co2layer is partially opaque. Hence part of energyis trapped inside the layer and the earth getswarmer. This effect is increasing if the amountof co2 is more. In the last few decades the co2emissions by the thermal power plants,

automobiles etc. are on the increase at analarming rate.

He informed that according to a Germanscientist estimates, the earth temperature willraise by 20 by the turn of the century and themean sea level will go up by 1m., if we do notcontain and reduce the co2 emissions.

He elaborated with illustrations on theproblems due to global warming which include:land area reduction, Europe will freeze and novegetation will grow, deserts will become hotter, pond water availability will reduce, manytsunami’s incidents may happen. He stressedthat the only way to contain the global warmingis to reduce co2 emissions.

After the talk, Dr. S. Salivahanan,Chairman, IEEE Madras Section Presented thememento to Dr. S . Renganathan. Mrs. SailajaIEEE PELS Madras Chapter proposed the voteof thanks.

A guest lecture on Agile Developmentby Mr. P. V. Sri Hari, Assistant

Manager, Telecom section, TataConsultancy Services was delivered atKongu Engg. College on 13th Sep 2008.

Ms. Purnima Jothikrishnan,Secretary, and IEEE Student Branchwelcomed the gathering and introduced thespeaker. Prof. R.Asokan, AssistantProfessor, Dept. of ECE delivered thepresidential address.

ABOUT THE GUEST LECTURE

Project processing is building blocks ofsoftware. Hence the best practices give the bestoutput. One such practice is agile development.

THE AGILE MANIFESTO IS

Individuals and interactions overprocesses and tools

Working software over comprehensivedocumentation

Customer collaboration over contractnegotiation

Responding to change over following a plan

THE KEY PRINCIPLES IN AGILE ARE

Highest priority is to satisfy thecustomer through early and continuousdelivery of valuable software.

Welcome changing requirements, even latein development. Agile processes harnesschange for the customer’s competitiveadvantage.

Deliver working software frequently, from a couple of weeks to a couple of

months, with a preference to the shortertimescale.

Business people and developers mustwork together daily throughout theproject.

Build projects around motivatedindividuals. Give them the environmentand support they need, and trust them toget the job done.

The most efficient and effective methodof conveying information to and within adevelopment team is face-to-faceconversation.

Working software is the primary measureof progress.

Agile processes promote sustainabledevelopment. The sponsors, developers, and users should be able to maintain aconstant pace indefinitely.

Continuous attention to technicalexcellence and good design enhancesagility.

Simplicity - the art of maximizing theamount of work not done - is essential.

The best architectures, requirements, anddesigns emerge from self-organizing teams.

At regular intervals, the team reflects onhow to become more effective, then tunesand adjusts its behaviour accordingly.

KEY AGILE PRACTICES Stand up calls Iterative development Release planning Test automation Continuous integration RetrospectivesAGILE WORKING - OBSERVATION &GOOD PRACTICES Implement Agile principles for

development engagements Avoid Agile working for maintenance &

enhancement work for large legacyapplications

Avoid Agile for projects mandatingrigorous documentation

Optimize the level of documentation Involve Designers in development team Dedicated development teams for

specific business functionality Automate Build & Install process Automate Testing

The valedictory address and vote ofthanks was given by Ms. Aruna, Vicechairperson, WIE.

IEEE Seeks Volunteers for Humanitarian Technology Challenge

The Humanitarian Technology Challenge(HTC) is a partnership between IEEE and

the United Nations Foundation designed tobring together technical professionals andhumanitarians to develop technologicalsolutions for pressing challenges facinghumanity.

A small number of IEEE members areneeded to help shape the early stages of theprogram, working with humanitarians to furtherdetail challenge definitions and outline a solutionprocess. This is a unique opportunity for IEEEvolunteers experienced in systems engineeringto work directly with prominent humanitarianvolunteers.

The following initial challenges wereidentified by focus groups composed of

representatives from ten humanitarianorganizations: Reliable Electricity – Availability of

power for electronic devices Data Connectivity of Rural District

Health Offices – Capability of exchangingdata among remote field offices and centralhealth facilities

Local Management and Tracking ofSupply Distribution – Ensure thatsupplies are getting to the people thatneed them in order to maximize the impactof assistance

Incident Tracking – Determine locationsand extent of medical problems in orderto focus resources

Patient ID and Tie to Health Records –Maintain consistent patient records, including when patients visit differentclinics and when they relocate.IEEE volunteers should be experienced

in the application of technology to solvehumanitarian issues and be willing to commitapproximately two to four hours per week tothe project. A conference call/webcast for earlystage volunteers is scheduled to take place inlate November, 2008. This will be followed byan in-person conference scheduled for the firstquarter of 2009, where additional volunteerswill be needed. For more information, visit theHTC Web site at http://www.ieee.org/web/volunteers/tab/htc/index.html Interestedvolunteers should contact IEEE HTC ProjectManager Harold Tepper at [email protected].

DO

Market yourself : If you’re hoping to score anew job or simply want to build newrelationships on a business networking site, pickwhat you want to be known for andcommunicate that clearly. Some recruiters usebusiness networking sites as if they were a giantrolodex. You’ll get better job leads if your profileis clear and up to date.

Get personal : At least a little. To buildrelationships on social networking sites, consider sharing a bit of your personal life suchas a hobbies or volunteer work as a small part ofyour profile. It makes you appear human and itresonates with others.

Set guidelines : Make sure to clarify companypolicies about employee conduct on social orbusiness networking sites. People in the 25 to54 age bracket are the fastest growingdemographic at MySpace. Some of them maybe your employees.

Expect honesty : If you’re creating advertisingcampaigns for social networks such as MySpaceand Facebook, you have to be prepared forfeedback. Not all of it will be pleasant, but ifyou listen, you just might learn how to improveyour product.

Make it relevant : Advertising on MySpaceand Facebook can easily backfire if it doesn’tstrike a chord with young people. Burger Kinghas made more than 114,000 friends onMySpace by giving away free episodes of Foxshows such as 24 and American Dad.

Social Networking: Tip Sheet

DON’T

Skip details : If you’re trying to foster businessrelationships on business networking sites, make sure your profile includes your completework history, even those entry-level jobs. Somesites allow you to search by company, andformer colleagues might want to contact you. They just might have job offers.

Be selfish : Master networkers who are tryingto connect with other executives don’t expectpayback from every person right away. Instead, they build relationships for the long haul. Ifsomebody helps you, try to reciprocate.

Play the numbers game : The more peopleyou are connected to on business networkingsites, the shallower those relationships are likelyto be. Recruiters may find value in linking to asmany people as possible but one executive sayshe feels that more than 150 contacts is toomuch.

Forget privacy : If you’re installing softwarewithin your company to automatically trackemployee contacts, make sure to calibrate theprivacy settings to match your employees’ levelof comfort. Executives may balk at sharingpersonal contacts with sales people, especiallyif they have no control over how and whenthose contacts are used.

Hoard information : If you’re planning to builda customer network for branding or marketresearch purposes, consider sharing insightsgleaned from these networks with participants. It helps keep them engaged. Intuit, for example, lets its Quicken community know how theyhave helped shape product features.

Chairman’s message continued...

M. Terman presented 22 awards at theceremony, including the Medal of Honor to Dr.Gordon E. Moore, co-founder and chairman ofthe board, emeritus, of Intel Corporation.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Machines that resemble humans oranimals have fascinated mankind for thousandsof years, but only in the 16th centurytechnology and craftsmanship becamesufficiently advanced both in Europe and inJapan to allow the construction of automateddolls. The robots are machines that incorporateat least some computational intelligence, andsuch machines have existed only for a fewdecades. The most wide-spread robots todayare industrial robots. They are useful andimportant for the production of goods, but theyare not very intelligent and have very littlesensory abilities. They can operate only incarefully prepared environments and under thesupervision of experts. For safety reasons theymust stop moving whenever a safety barrier isviolated by a person or an object. Another kindis mobile robot. Its purpose is not theproduction of goods in factories, but the deliveryof various services, so far mainly in the areas offloor cleaning, mail delivery, lawn-mowing,giving tours in a museum, and surgical assistance. They have been employed in environmentswhere they may, or even have to, come intocontact with the public, and some of themactually interact with people. They can, to avery limited extent, perceive their environmentand they display traces of intelligence, e.g., innavigation and obstacle avoidance. The goal isto build an autonomous mobile robot that guidespeople in a known environment. The motivationis to create more awareness of the laboratoriesfor prospective students and their families aswell as act as an aid to visitors, current students, and faculty in providing navigation using visionsystem. The robot will use human interactionto provide directions around the building.

2.0 LITERATURE SURVEY

2.1 RHINO: Rhino is an indoor navigationrobot designed at the University of Bonn inGermany in the mid 1990s. Rhino’s main goalswere to be able to navigate within an officespace, move from point A to point B, andrecognize a number of objects on the floor anddispose of them in a garbage can. Rhino uses

Automated GuideROBOT

Markov localization which is an algorithm thatuses sensor data, which are in turn used to locateimmediate obstacles and create a trajectory tonavigate around the obstructions Rhino alsoincluded a user friendly interface whichcommunicated with users through its smalldigital screen and received input from fourbuttons.

2.2 MINERVA: Minerva is a second generationtour guide robot created by a team made up ofmembers from Carnegie Mellon University andUniversity of Bonn. Its goal was to entertainand educate museum visitors about the exhibitsby guiding them through the museum andproviding brief explanations of some exhibits.

2.3 ALFRED: Alfred was designed bySwarthmore College for entry to the AmericanAssociate of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI)national robot competition in 1999. Itsuccessfully served food while recognizinghumans and repeat visitors interacting witheveryone in a friendly human-like manner.Alfred distinguished people from inanimateobjects by using motion and skin detection withan eye template matching algorithm and colormatching.

2.4 GRACE: GRACE (Graduate RobotAttending ConferencE) is a robot designed toarrive at a conference, register for the event, and navigate itself to the correct location at thecorrect time to give a short talk about itself. The team responsible for Grace was made upof members from Carnegie Mellon University, the Naval Research Laboratory, NorthwesternUniversity, Metrica Inc., and SwarthmoreCollege. GRACE used Markov localization andMarkov decision process planners were usedfor navigation.

2.5 Virgil: In early 2001, a team from RiceUniversity sought out to create a robot namedVirgil that could give an outdoor tour of part ofRice’s campus. It used GPS and odometryreadings for navigation through busy sidewalksand streets. The GPS readings were used tocheck the margin of error in the odometryreadings and to calculate the error of Virgil’sinternal location, ensuring that the robot neverveered too astray.

3.0 PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

To design and construct an autonomousguide robot that helps people to reach theirdestination. The robot gives a pre-scripted, pre-planned guidance using dynamic navigation andlocalization using genetic algorithm.

4.0 METHODOLOGY

4.1 HARDWARE DESIGN

a) MOTOR: The Gear motor has beenselected for this Robot. One gear motoris used for driving and other for steeringpurpose.

b) MICROCONTROLLER: Atmel89C51 is selected for robot movementcontrol. It is a low-power, high-performance CMOS 8-bitmicrocomputer with 4 Kbytes of FlashProgrammable and Erasable Read OnlyMemory (PEROM). The on-chipFlash allows the program memory tobe reprogrammed in-system or by aconventional nonvolatile memoryprogrammer. The Atmel 89C51provides the following standardfeatures: 4 Kbytes of Flash, 128 bytesof RAM, 32 I/O lines, two 16-bit timer/counters, a five vector two-levelinterrupt architecture, a full duplexserial port, on-chip oscillator and clockcircuitry.

c) SENSOR: The sensor is used fornavigation and localization purposes. There are many types of sensorsavailable like Infrared sensor, Touchsensor, RF sensor etc.In this projectRetro-reflective sensor has beenselected because recognize objectsindependent of their surface qualities.

4.2 SOFTWARE DESIGN

Software coding is to be developed forrobot movements using microcontrollerprogramming. Another code is to be developedfor interfacing robot with PC using RS 232Cserial interface.

4.3 ALGORITHM

Genetic algorithm is proposed to use forproviding guidance to the new user with in theknown environment. .
