Yado and the Werewolf By Rev. Dr. Jerry Black, Associate Minister
Halloween
has not
always
been my
favoritetime of
the year.
Some-
where
along the way, I became an old
fuddy-duddy who didn’t want to
be bothered. Hearing the door bell
ring every other minute was not
high on my “Oh yeah—let me have
more of that” list. But, I came to the
conclusion this week that I no longer
want to be that old fuddy-duddy.
I’ve been missing out on too much
fun. So yes Susan, I’ve decided to
enjoy Halloween. I’m even looking
forward to the possibilities, perhaps
stirred by memories of an incident
some years ago with Khris, the num-
ber two grand son and all of five
years old at the time.
“Yado” (my grandfather moni-
ker)” he asked, “what if I were a
werewolf?” Okay, just go with that
thought for a moment. I did, and
with much entertainment. But Ididn’t share with Khris ALL that
immediately crossed the shallow
recesses of my mind. I didn’t tell
him, for example, that I’d have to
expunge him from the face of the
earth, or turn him into the animal
control people, or bless his wedding
to a Pit Bull. Nor did I pose to him,
“I thought you were.” For once, I
had the foresight to simply encour-
age his fantasy and let his little mind
exhaust all the possibilities it could
muster. And it was fun.
Sometimes, all we need is a little
encouragement, isn’t it? We too
need the encouragement to think,
speak, share, serve, dream. Join us
this Sunday as the saints of faith
encourage us in faith.

Operation Christmas Child Packing Party with K-Love!We are excited to host another Opera-
tion Christmas Child Packing Party
on Saturday, November 6. KLOVE
radio station, 88.9 will join us, and do
a live broadcast. Everyone is invited!
Children LOVE to pack the shoeboxes
so bring your children or grandchildrento join the fun. We will meet in Fel-
lowship Hall from 1 to 4p.m. You can
come and go anytime.
Please bring cookies to share -
KLOVE is providing beverages! There
will be a fun surprise give to each
person who packs a shoebox.
We fill the shoeboxes with
small items such as: soap, toothbrush-
es, hard candy, children’s T-shirts, or
caps, balls, dolls, matchbox cars, flash-
lights, or almost any item small enough
to fit in a shoebox as long as it is child
appropriate and non-perishable. The
shoeboxes go to children in orphan-
ages, churches, schools, or hospitals
around the world. A booklet in the
child’s own language titled “The Great-est Gift”, accompanies each box. This
booklet tells of Jesus’ love and sacrifice
for each of them. The children share
the Good News with extended families.
Samaritan’s Purse has reported a 40%
decision rate from the shoebox gifts. As
a relay center, FCC will be accepting
filled shoeboxes from other churches
and families throughout the week of
November 15-22. We are going to
need help throughout the week to pack
boxes in cartons. There will be a sign
up sheet at the Operation Christnas
Child table starting this sunday for
shifts. If you can help during the week
of Nov. 15-22, or would like more
information as to how your children
can fill a box for a needy child, please
contact Michele Schlough at 844-321
