The foundation focuses on two main areas: Energy policy/climate protection and the future of Europe. Above all, the Commissioner for Future Generations is an environmental ombudsman. As one of Hungary’s fourparliamentary ombudsmen his principal responsibility is to safeguard citizens’ constitutional right to a healthy envi-ronment. In this capacity he investigates complaints relat-ing to a broad range of environmental issues, such as the degradation of urban green areas, noise pollution by aviation, licensing of individual industrial installations, etc. Secondly, as a guardian of future generations, he acts as apolicy advocate for sustainability issues across all relevantfields of national or local legislation and public policy.

The seven institutes constituting the Faculty of Sciencesare engaged in teaching and research in classical naturalsciences as well as in sport sciences. The teaching andresearch staff of the Faculty play an important role in the intellectual life of South Transdanubia and contributeto the scientific development of the region. Comhar SDC works in three-year cycles and began itsfourth term in January 2009. Our organisation conductsresearch on the best ways to achieve sustainable devel-opment in Ireland. Comhar SDC may undertake this workat the request of any Minister or on its own initiative. It isan advisory council that provides guidance to the Gov-ernment on measures that can move us to a sustainable,equal and low carbon society. Comhar SDC also under-takes outreach work to inform people more generally onsustainable development. We have sponsored pro-grammes such as the Eco-UNESCO Young Environmental-ist awards, TidyTowns, and we run a Media Fund toincrease awareness of sustainable development withinthe wider public.

The University Centre for Environmental Studies was established in 1989. In relation to the environment, thetraining also requires the presentation of the picture notonly as it concerns the natural (i.e. biological or geologi-cal) dimension, but also those of sociology, law, econom-ics and even ethics. The Centre’s Scientific Councilcurrently consists of representatives from the followingfaculties: Biology, Chemistry, Philosophy and Sociology,Physics, Geography and Regional Studies, Geology, His-tory, Economics Sciences, and Law and Administration.The Scientific Council is at the same time the ScientificCouncil of the Inter-Faculty Studies in Environmental Protection (MSOŚ) whose students go on to become specialists in the field.

Ekopolis is the first Slovak foundation that has started o build its own long-term assets (endowment) systemati-cally and developed a policy on conflict of interest. Thefoundation endeavours to become a stable and transpar-ent financial source for active citizens as well as a reliablepartner to municipalities, public administration, businesspartners and foreign donors. Their vision is an advancedcivil society with citizens who execute their responsibilityfor societal development and environmental issues. A soci-ety with citizens who are interested in participating in pub-lic policy, have the courage to adopt a critical stance andcare about avoiding detriment to future generations. The Ekopolis Foundation has been managing open grantprogrammes focused on democracy and nature conserva-tion for 20 years to date. It offers innovative programmesand ideas and identifies topical issues. The foundation’sopen grant programmes, in which projects win support in an open competition, are the organisation’s main tool.
