Women, Wealth, and Legacy Planning Whether nurturing the values of chil-

dren, fulfilling charitable goals, or makinginvestment decisions that affect their ownas well as their beneficiaries financialsecurity, women play a central role inestablishing and preserving family wealth.

Women need to be involved, informed, andcomfortable with their role as guardians of family wealth. Active participation in wealthmanagement can strengthen womens com-mitment to protect and grow their assets

with the goal of leaving a legacy for theirchildren, their community, and beyond.Best Practices in Legacy Planning

The following strategies may help assurethe smooth transfer of both your measur-able wealth and your values surrounding

wealth to the next generation.Education leads to confidence.

Attaining financial security for you and your heirs typically requires you to acceptresponsibility for the management of sig-

nificant investment assets. Whether youare single, married, or a surviving widow,it is in your best interest to receive asmuch education as possible about wealthplanning, investments, successorship, andrelated matters. Even if you are not directly responsible for making important financialdecisions, it is vital to have knowledge inthese areas in order to communicate effec-tively with professional advisors charged

with these duties.Professionals offer objective, qualified services.

Relying on professional advice asopposed to family and friends is extremely important when making decisions affect-ing the accumulation, preservation, anddistribution of wealth. What should youexpect from a qualified professional? A

good wealth advisor -- or a team withother professionals, such as attorneys andaccountants -- should offer guidance andservices in most areas of wealth manage-ment, including estate planning, retirementplanning, insurance needs assessment, and

college planning. On a more personal note,a wealth advisor should work closely with you to:

Identify areas requiring special assis-tance, such as creating trusts.

Minimize taxes and planning costs. Develop and implement a personal-

ized wealth management plan. Review your plan periodically and

suggest changes when needed. Wealth holders have a greater oppor-

tunity -- if not responsibility -- to makecharitable giving an integral part of thelegacy planning process. Families that arecharitably inclined may have clear goalsin mind, but they may not know where to

begin. In order to choose the best strategy, you should work with a trusted advisor toevaluate a number of factors, such as taxmanagement objectives, types of assets tobe gifted, and your specific strategic intent.

Then choose from among a range of chari-table giving vehicles, such as donor-advisedfunds, family foundations, gift annuities, and charitable remainder trusts/charitablelead trusts.Children should learn about the respon-sibilities of wealth.

Wealth is a gift that opens doors of opportunity not only for you, but also for

your children, their children, and genera-tions to come. Yet wealth can be a weighty responsibility that takes time to manage,

maintain, and preserve. If you are a par-ent, you are no doubt concerned about the

effects of wealth on your childrens valuesand how the money lessons you pass onto them will resonate as they mature toadulthood.Family values should be held in the samehigh regard as family wealth.

Family values -- those traits, behavioralpatterns, beliefs, goals, and morals thatare shared by members of a family group-- define a familys character as much asdollar signs measure a familys wealth.By holding shared values in high regardand setting an example of commitment tofinancial responsibility, philanthropy, and

volunteerism for the younger generation, you will enrich your familys legacy for geerations to come.

A Womans Worth As stewards of the family legacy, wome

are in a unique and influential position. They are holders of great wealth as wellas keepers of the familys moral and phil-anthropic vision. There are many financialaccounting, legal, and business tools toassist women in implementing a plan of action. Contact your financial advisor forguidance in mapping out a legacy planninstrategy unique to your situation.

Peas Disposal Service, known forrecycling and waste hauling, now offersCountywide Shredding, a secure, mobileshredding service.

Shredding is done in a specially designed truck. All paper collected

through shredding will then be recy-cled, making it a logical fit with PeasDisposals core mission, explained com-pany vice-president Art Pea.

The Countywide Shredding truck willbe available for businesses and individu-als. The shredding fee is determined by

weight, using the scale on the truck.Peas anticipates also having the truckparticipate in community events, along

with their Zero Hero mascot, as part of the companys effort to educate the publicabout how to recycle and the importanceof recycling.

Shredding has become essential dueto the need to protect private informa-tion. Now we can offer shredding and thecustomers will know that their paper willbe properly recycled, Pea added. Withthe tough new state mandates, recycling toreduce the waste going into our landfills iseven more important.

Countywide Shredding is certifiedthrough the National Association forInformation Destruction, an organizationthat oversees the security of shreddingservices. For information on CountywideShredding services, contact PeasDisposal at 528-3909.
