Ashoka U catalyzes social innovation in higher education because we believe universities can do good… better.
That’s why Ashoka U promotes robust, interdisciplinary approaches to teaching, research, and action in social innovation that advance the positive social and environmental impact of colleges and universities globally. To put it simply...
Education that matters. Ashoka U identifies and empowers entrepreneurial change leaders in higher education, supports the transformation of colleges and universities into Changemaker Campuses and catalyzes and measures colleges‘ and universities’ contributions to positive social and environmental impact, so that a world-changing university experience becomes the new normal.
WHO WE ARE
WHAT IS A CHANGEMAKER CAMPUS? Launched in 2008, Ashoka offers the Changemaker
Campus designation to leading institutions in social
innovation education. These institutions share the
vision for higher education to become the next global
driver of social change by transforming the educational
experience into a world-changing experience.
The Changemaker Campus designation recognizes
colleges and universities that have embedded social
innovation as a core value and showcases the ways
in which they have built supportive environments
for changemaking across the entire institution–from
admissions through the curriculum, career services,
all the way to community and alumni engagement.
Changemaker Campuses form a global network
of leaders and innovators who provide inspiration,
connections, and support to broaden the reach
and impact of social innovation around the world.
WHO ARE THE CHANGEMAKER CAMPUSES?Ashoka U has currently selected 30 colleges and
universities from around the world, including public
and private institutions from 5 countries that range
in size, institutional type, and geographic location.
As our Changemaker Campus network grew to 33
universities by 2015, we’ll continue to uncover the
hidden potential of students and inspire them to create
meaningful lives and powerful change in the world.
WHAT IS ASHOKA U’S ROLE? Ashoka U serves as accelerator, thought partner, and
convener. We support Changemaker Campuses in
reaching their institutional goals, facilitate the work
of the consortium in advancing the social innovation
education movement, promote Changemaker Campus
leadership and highlight accomplishments to influence
the higher education sector, and connect Changemaker
Campuses to innovative collaboration projects with
Ashoka and leading social entrepreneurs in the field.
WHY PARTNER WITH ASHOKA? Ashoka is the global association of the world’s leading
social entrepreneurs–men and women with systems
changing solutions for the world’s most urgent social
problems. Since 1981, Ashoka has elected over 3,000
leading social entrepreneurs as Ashoka Fellows,
providing them with living stipends, professional
support, and access to a global peer network in over
75 countries. With our global community, we develop
innovative models for collaboration and design new
architecture for social change.
Leveraging our insights from working with this
network of innovators, Ashoka is in the unique
position to share both examples of systems-
changing solutions and experience nurturing social
entrepreneurs with the academic sector. Ashoka’s
unparalleled network and field knowledge of social
entrepreneurship provides the ideal platform for a
thriving community of social innovators with a new
vision for higher education to grow.

Changemaker Campus Selection Process
The Changemaker Campus selection process is closely modeled after Ashoka’s Fellow selection. It enables Ashoka U to make a comprehensive evaluation of the institution and helps us define institutional strengths and unique contributions to the field. Typically, campuses complete the process during the school year (Sept-May) or calendar year (Jan-Sept), but campuses may choose a timeline that best fits their institutional schedule and maximizes momentum of the individuals involved.

SELECTION PANEL $10,000Representatives from each candidate campus participate in a day-long series of interviews with expert panelists— including current Change Leaders, Ashoka fellows, and social entrepreneurs— who determine whether the campus becomes a Changemaker Campus.

on ON-BOARDINGAfter successfully passing the Selection Panel, Ashoka U works with the new Changemaker Campus to determine next steps, areas of growth, and potential partnerships. This includes a press release and formal announcement, as well as an orientation and 6-month check-in with the panelists.
Our Selection Criteria
Committed university staff to champion social entrepreneurship and ignite change.
CREATEEcosystem components: curriculum, co-curriculum, research, community, and culture.
BUILD SUPPORTSupport to stabilize long-term growth: senior leadership support, coordinating structure, staff, and resources.
EXTENDCapacity for lasting impact: a unique institutional contribution and participation in the greater field of social innovation.
SHOULD WE BECOME A CHANGEMAKER CAMPUS? The Changemaker Campus program is for colleges and
universities ready to take the lead in social innovation
on campus and forge a new path for higher education
that matters. As a Changemaker Campus, your
institution will:
› Take advantage of an emerging trend in higher
education, thus differentiating your institution.
› Respond to growing student demand for
result-oriented and innovative programming.
› Build on, expand, and “update” institutional
commitments to public scholarship, civic
engagement and service learning.
› Align with trends in higher education funder
priorities. Given the growth of CSR, impact
investing, and social entrepreneurship funding,
funders are now looking to develop and support
a robust pipeline of future social entrepreneurs
equipped for a world defined by change.
WHAT WILL THIS PARTNERSHIP LOOK LIKE? Ashoka U works with social innovation champions at
your institution to determine strengths, challenges, and
areas for growth. Ashoka U starts by identifying Change
Leaders who consider it their professional priority to
embed social innovation on campus, and then works
with these individuals to build a team and assess their
campus ecosystem. After identifying the unique
strengths of your campus, Ashoka U works with your
campus team to develop a strategic vision and action
plan that leverages the resources we have compiled
during our past 5 years of programmatic growth.
Why become a Changemaker Campus?

“If [universities] want to be part of the solution to the world’s most pressing problems, they need to promote interdisciplinary, creative problem solving. Ashoka U is the perfect partner to stimulate faculty and students to break out of old categories in search of new solutions.”
–GREG DEES, Director of it Duke Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship
“The next generation of leaders wants to respond to a call to find solutions to the world’s biggest challenges. Universities can use institutional credibility to say: that desire, that idea you have, that passion, you can use that to engage the world, make a living doing so, and find fulfillment - and it’s called social innovation and social entrepreneurship.”
–JEFF SNELL, Special Advisor to the President of Marquette University
“W all are responsible to create a better world, and universities can be a catalyst for change. I honestly believe that social entrepreneurship gives knowledge a sense of purpose, no matter what the student’s career path is.”
–HECTOR GOMEZ, Associate Professor at Universidad de Monterrey Business School
