Brethren, Our annual elections have been held, and I would like to congratulate Brother Gary Adkin-son who has been elected as Master for the 2017 Masonic year. Over the past Two years we have become particularly close and I know in my heart that the Lodge could not be in better

hands. I would also like to thank the Lodge for my year as Master. It has been a wonderful growth experience for me, both as a man and as a Mason. My thanks go out especially to my line officers who actually made the Lodge run: Gary Adkinson and Ryan Phillips, the Pillars, BJ Blossomgame and Ken Ketterman as Deacons, our Secretary Scot Neace and our Assistant Secretary Kirt Wilson, our Treasurer Bill Coe and our Chaplain Dee Matson. The work they did during the year was just awesome, and I thank them so much for their effort. S&F, Michael Blodgett, Master

News on the Square

From the West,

Brethren, From the West: The Lewis Jewel is now authorized for Masons in California. What is a lewis and the Lewis Jewel? In ancient times a lewis was a devise used by operative masons to lift and move heavy

stones. It consisted of two wedges which were placed in a specially pre-pared cavity in a stone and another wedge was forced between them. Thus spreading the wedges to make secure contact with the stone so it could be raised, lowered or moved with block and tackle Also in history it was expected a son would be apprenticed in his fathers trade and assist and support his father in his work. “The duty of the son of a Mason is to support his parents in the same way a [mechanical] lewis supports and lifts a heavy stone.” Hence the title, LEWIS, or son of a ma-son. The term Lewis is commonly used in some Grand Jurisdictions in the Unit-ed States, Europe and throughout the world. Some jurisdictions refer to a Lewis (son of a Mason) in ritual or a mechanical lewis is displayed with the perfect ashlar.

The LEWIS Jewel: Grand Master of California, Most Worshipful M. David Perry, in 2016, authorized a LEWIS JEWEL OR PIN to be awarded to and worn by the son of a Master Mason. Normally the father gives it to his son. The jewel is quite simple and meaningful. Some jurisdictions allow name bars attached signifying the Master Mason father, grand father etc. So, far Grand Lodge of California is silent on the name bars nor has it published any rules, regulations or procedures on the Lewis Pin.

Brother Jesus Martinez, Southern California Jurisdiction DeMolay Master Councilor, gave a speech at the most recent Annual Session of the Grand Lodge of California. In his speech he recognized two individual DeMolays from the Southern California Jurisdiction Order of DeMolay for their DeMolay activities. Both of these young men are from Conejo Valley Chapter. The first was Brother Ethan Strubbe, who was recognized for his Leadership skills when he was the Master Squire. The second was Brother Christopher Kruse, who was recognized for his Ritual skills. On behalf of Channel Islands Lodge No. 214, I would like to extend our most hearty congratulations to both of these young men. A MASONIC INCIDENT THE CRAFTSMAN - 1866

A little incident, containing some mystical interest, transpired in Wayne county, South Carolina, during the late war. It is as follows: It was late at night, the husband was absent, and the wife, alone with her children, had retired. Three or four soldiers rudely knocked at the door of the house, and demanded entrance and something to eat. The good la-dy told them that it was too late, that she had nothing cooked, but fearing they would break the door, she got out of bed, and opened it to expostulate with them. They insisted that she should cook something for them, and while she was getting ready, and they were roaming about the house, one of the party, who seemed to be the leader, happened to find a copy of Mackey's "Masonic Jurisprudence." Turning over he found the name of the poor, frightened woman's husband written on the fly-leaf. "Is this your husband's?" he inquired of the lady. "Yes sir," was the timid reply. "Is he a Mason?" "Yes Sir." "Come, boys, right about-march!" and immediately the house was cleared and quickly closed.

The Officers of Channel Islands Lodge No. 214 Wish all of the Brethren a very happy Holiday Season
