CHAO 2016 Convention and Annual Meeting Hope and Healing: The Foundations of Catholic Health MinistrySeptember 28-30, 2016

Toronto Marriott Bloor Yorkville Hotel90 Bloor St East Toronto, Ontario M4W 1A7

“Our distinctive vocation in Christian health care is not so much to heal better or more efficiently than anyone else; it is to bring comfort to people by giving them an experience that will strengthen their confidence in life. The ultimate goal of our care is to give those who are ill, through our care, a reason to hope.” (Joseph Cardinal Bernardin) Since the very beginnings of Catholic health care, individuals and organizations participating in the healing mission of Christ have been rooted in providing hope and healing to the vulnerable. Advances in medicine and the evolution of society have dramatically changed how we provide these, but the foundation of ministering to the whole person, body, mind and spirit remains constant. This year’s convention will review the foundation and ongoing journey of Catholic health care, and explore current day issues particularly in the areas of mental health and long term care. The objective is to challenge modern day Catholic health care to reflect upon and find new ways to continue its mission.

9:30amPlenary Session: ACEing an Age Old Issue in the Care of Older Ontarians and Canadians

Dr. Samir K. Sinha, MD, DPhil, FRCPC Director of Geriatrics Sinai Health System and the University Health Network Hospitals

Although older adults represent 16.1% of our current population, they account for 40% of hospital admissions and 60% of hospital days across Canada every year. While they represent our system’s greatest users, it is clear that the system has not kept up with their needs. Dealing with a hospital system that was designed 50 years ago, when the average Canadian was 27 years of age, it is clear we now need to adapt to older patients with increasingly complex needs. Dr. Sinha will discuss how he came to understand a great opportunity to develop and research a new effective way to care for older adults under the banner of the now internationally recognized Acute Care for Elders or “ACE” Strategy. He will also share what progress has been made in his work around developing Ontario’s Seniors Strategy and work that is currently underway to promote the adoption of a National Seniors Strategy. This strategy establishes sustainable best practices and policies at a provincial and national level that could support the overall coordination of the delivery of health, social and community care services; with an intense focus on supporting older Ontarians and Canadians to stay healthy and stay at home longer.

He will discuss the importance of quality for vulnerable populations, especially during transitions of care, and how health providers can support quality change across the system. 12:00pmBuffet Luncheon

1:30pmWorkshop Sessions - Hope and Healing: Today’s Challenges

The 2015 CHAO Convention focused on the dignity of the human person and palliative care in light of the Supreme Court’s decision on physician assisted death. Currently, the Government of Canada is enacting legislation based on the Supreme Court’s decision if physician assisted death will become available. Once passed, this in turn presents new challenges for Catholic health organizations to provide hope and healing to persons nearing the end-of-life or wishing physician assisted death. These workshops will provide participants with an opportunity to discuss how Catholic health organizations are dealing with this situation and their experiences.

8:45am Morning Reflection 9:00amThe Healing Mission of Health Care Ministry and the Moral Imagination

Rachelle Barina Director, Ethics and Formation SSM Health

The CHAO in partnership with the Centre for Clinical Ethics, will be hosting this session.

Healing is a central and foundational concept within the health care ministries of Christians. The way in which people think about the meaning of healing impacts their moral ideas and decision-making.

Rachelle will first explore common conceptions of healing amongst people who work within the health care ministry, especially those doing ethics need to move beyond these common ideas and toward a conception of healing that simultaneously accords with the Christian theological traditions and is ecumenically sensitive. She will also explore several practical issues and demonstrate how a more refined conception of healing might offer insight within the processes of reflection, discernment, and decision-making.
