1 General information andprecautions

General informationThe electrical system is of the 12 volt

negative earth type and comprises a 12 voltbattery of which the negative terminal isearthed, an alternator which is driven from thecrankshaft pulley, a starter motor and relatedelectrical accessories, components and wiring.

The battery supplies a steady amount ofcurrent for the ignition, lighting and otherelectrical circuits and provides a reserve ofelectricity when the current consumed by theelectrical equipment exceeds that beingproduced by the alternator.

The alternator is controlled by a regulator. This ensures a high output if the battery is in alow state of charge or the demand from theelectrical equipment is high. Alternatively, itensures a low output if the battery is fullycharged and there is little demand for theelectrical equipment.

An on-board computer system is fitted toBX 19 models, being located in the floorconsole forward of the gear lever. This systemhas fifteen possible functions, the main onesbeing to log petrol consumption, averagespeed, journey time elapsed and the estimatedtime of arrival, plus the range possible on theremaining fuel. The main system componentsare the computer unit, the distance sensor andthe fuel output sensor.

From late 1986, all models are equippedwith a dim-dip lighting system to comply withUK regulations. The function of the system isto prevent the vehicle being driven with onlythe sidelights illuminated. This system uses arelay-controlled resistor circuit. When thesidelights are on (ignition also on), theheadlights are automatically illuminated atapproximately one-sixth their normal dippedbeam power.

Further details of the various systems aregiven in the relevant Sections of this Chapter. While some repair procedures are given, the

usual course of action is to renew thecomponent concerned. The owner whoseinterest extends beyond mere componentrenewal should obtain a copy of the`Automobile Electrical & Electronic SystemsManual’, available from the publishers of thismanual.

PrecautionsIt is necessary to take extra care when

working on the electrical system to avoiddamage to semi-conductor devices (diodesand transistors) and to avoid the risk ofpersonal injury. In addition to the precautionsgiven in the “Safety first!” Section at thebeginning of this manual, take note of thefollowing points when working on the system.a) Before disconnecting any wiring or

removing components, always ensure thatthe ignition is switched off.

b) Disconnect the battery leads before usinga mains charger.

c) Do not reverse the battery connections.Components such as the alternator or anyother having semi-conductor circuitrycould be irreparably damaged.

d) If the engine is being started using jumpleads and a slave battery, connect thebatteries positive to positive and negativeto negative. This also applies whenconnecting a battery charger.

e) Never disconnect the battery terminals oralternator multi-plug connector when theengine is running.

f) The battery leads and alternator multi-plug must be disconnected beforecarrying out any electric welding on thevehicle.

g) Never use an ohmmeter of the typeincorporating a hand cranked generatorfor circuit or continuity testing.

h) When carrying out welding operations onthe vehicle using electric weldingequipment, disconnect the battery andalternator.

i) When fitting electrical accessories it isimportant that they are connectedcorrectly, otherwise serious damage mayresult to the components concerned.

Items such as radios, tape recorders, electronic ignition systems, electronictachometers, automatic dipping etc, should all be checked for correct polarity.

2 Fuses and relays - location and renewal 1

Note: Always renew a fuse with one of similarrating and never renew it without finding thesource of trouble1 The fuse/relay box is located under thelower trim panel on the passenger side.2 The circuits protected by the fuses, together with their colour and rating, are givenin Specifications.3 Access to the fuses is gained by pulling therelease handle and swinging the box down(see illustration).4 Always renew a fuse with one of similarrating and never renew it more than oncewithout finding the source of trouble. Ifnecessary, refer to the wiring diagrams at theend of this Chapter.5 Relay units rarely give problems but theycan easily be renewed by pulling them fromtheir location in the box. The relay units andtheir functions are also shown in the wiringdiagrams at the end of this Chapter. Somerelay units are connected in-line and areseparate from the main fuse/relay box unit.

6 On BX 19 GTi models, further relay units arelocated in the engine compartment, under aplastic cover (see illustration). 7 If suspect, these units should be checkedby a Citroën dealer. They are easily renewedby detaching the wiring connector and thenunscrewing the retaining bolt.

3 Exterior lights - removal,refitting and bulb renewal 1

Caution: Avoid touching the glass envelopeof a halogen bulb. Failure to do this mayresult in premature bulb failure.

HeadlightsBulb renewal1 The bulbs are renewed from the rear of theheadlamp unit, access being from the enginecompartment.

2 Pull free the wiring connector, release thebulb retaining clip and withdraw the bulb (seeillustrations).3 Where halogen bulbs are fitted, do nottouch the glass with your fingers or with afluffy cloth. Allow the bulb to cool beforeremoving it. If the glass is inadvertentlytouched, clean it with methylated spirit.4 Refitting is a reversal of removal. Wheninserting the bulb, it must be correctly alignedwith the location notches (see illustration).Check the headlights for satisfactory operationand alignment on completion.

Removal and refitting5 Raise the bonnet, and pull free theheadlamp wiring connector and the sidelightbulbholder.6 The headlamp unit can then be carefullyprised from its ball and socket adjustablemountings (see illustration).7 Refitting is a reversal of removal. Checklamp operation and alignment on completion.

Front foglights8 Disconnect the battery earth lead.9 Undo the retaining screws and remove thelight unit (see illustration).10 Detach the wiring and withdraw the cover(see illustration).11 Release the retaining clip and extract thebulb (see illustration).12 Refit in the reverse order of removal (avoidtouching the new bulb glass with yourfingers), then check for satisfactory operationand adjustment. If required, the light beamcan be adjusted by turning the adjuster screw.

5 Headlamps - alignment 21 Accurate headlamp alignment should becarried out by a Citroën garage. However, inan emergency the following procedure willprovide an acceptable light pattern.

2 Position the vehicle on a level surface withtyres correctly inflated. Start the engine andallow it to idle, then check that the groundclearance lever is in the normal runningposition. The vehicle should be positionedapproximately 10 metres in front of a wall orgarage door.3 Mark the headlamp bulb centres on thewall.4 Switch on the main beam and check thatthe areas of maximum illumination coincidewith the marks on the wall. If not, turn theplastic knobs located on the rear of theheadlamps as required (see illustration).5 Switch off the engine when the adjustmentis completed.

6 Horn - maintenance 11 The horn, located near the air inlet grilleabove the front bumper, should not requireany attention or adjustment throughout its life.2 Provided the circuit fuse and operatingswitch are in good order, any fault must be inthe wiring, the earth bond or the unit itself.3 A weak or intermittent horn signal may bedue to a corroded support bracket connection.Unbolt the horn and scrape the bracket andbody contact faces clean.

30 Wiring diagrams

The wiring diagrams in this Manualrepresent typical examples of those available.

To assist in using the diagrams, there

follows an explanation of the various lettersand their use in conjunction with the wiringdiagram keys:

a) Large numbers - identify the variouscomponents.

b) Capital letters printed in the middle of awire - indicate which harness the wire islocated in.

c) Small letters located at the connectionpoints - indicate colour, either of the wires(which have an “F” prefix), of the endfitting, of the marking on the wire, or acombination of any two. For example,F.BI is a blue wire, Mv is a mauvemarking, and F.J.Ve is a yellow wire with agreen marking.

d) Connecting blocks - the first number andthe letters inside the boxes indicate thesize and colour of the connecting block.Note that due to lack of space, 0 is usedto denote 10. The last number gives therelative location of the relevant wire in thatconnecting block.
