4-1. General

This chapter contains information on mate-riel used with the major items.

4-2. Description and Usage

b. Inspeztion and Repair.

(1) If the bayonet-knife fails to slideover the bayonet stud of the rifle- or can beremoved without compressing the releases, thereleases are assembled incorrectly. Evacuateto direct support maintenance to be assembledcorrectly.

(2) If the releases are assembled correct-ly, inspect for a weak or broken release spring.If spring is weak or broken evacuate to directsupport maintenance for replacement.

(3) If screws or washers are missing ordamaged replace.

CHAPTER 5

AMMUNITION

5-1. General

The ammunition for the Rifles, 5.56-MM,Ml6 and M16Al is classified as small-armsammunition and is issued in the form of acomplete round. A complete round (cartridge)consists of all the components necessary tofire the weapon once, that is, projectile (bul-let), cartridge case, propellant, and primer.

5-2. Classification

a. Cartridges for the Rifles, 5.56-MM, Ml6and M16Al are classified as centerfire car-tridges. In a centerfire cartridge the primer islocated in a small well or pocket in the centerof the cartridge case head.

b. The cartridges for these weapons areclassified and identified according to type andmodel as follows:

(1) Ball, M 193

(2) Tracer, Ml96

(3) Dummy, Ml99

(4) Blank, M200

5-3. Identification

a. General. Ammunition for this weapon isidentified completely by packing and marking,including the ammunition lot number, onoriginal packing containers. When ammunitionis removed from its original packing container,the full identity of the ammunition, includingthe lot number, nomenclature and model de-signation shall be maintained with the am-munition.

b. Identification. The various cartridges canbe visually identified as itemized in table 5-l.

C. Marking. Ammunition for 5.56-mm weap-ons has the manufacturer’s identification andyear of manufacture impressed on the head ofthe cartridge case. The year is denoted by thelast two digits of the calendar year.

5-4. Care, Handling and Preservation

a. This ammunition is not dangerous tohandle. It is packed to withstand conditionsnormally encountered in the field. Moisture re-sistant ammunition boxes are used to provideprotection during shipment and storage; how-ever, care must be taken to prevent this pack-ing from becoming damaged. All damagedpacking must be repaired or replaced immedi-ately with careful attention given to the trans-fer of all markings to the new parts.

b. Ammunition boxes should be opened care-fully as they are to be used as long as theyare serviceable.

c. Ammunition boxes should not be openeduntil the ammunition is required for use. Am-munition removed from airtight containersfor extended periods of time, particularly indamp climate, is apt to corrode, thereby ren-dering the ammunition unserviceable.

d. Cartridges should be protected from hightemperatures and prolonged exposure to thedirect rays of the sun. Such exposure is likelyto affect ballistic performance of the car-tridges. The combination of high tempera-tures and a humid atmosphere is particularlydetrimental to the stability of the propellantand to the tracer mixture in tracer ammuni-tion.

e. Cartridges should be kept clean and freeof foreign matter. If cartridges get wet or dirty,they should be wiped off at once. If light cor-rosion forms on cartridges, it should be wipedoff with a clean dry cloth. If a cartridge casebecomes so corroded that any amount of metalis eaten away, it is dangerous to fire and shouldnot be fired. Cartridges should not be polishedto make them look better or brighter.

f. The use of oil or grease on cartridges isprohibited. Oil or grease might cause injuriousabrasives to collect in weapons or produce ex-cessive and hazardous chamber pressureswhen fired.

g. Whenever practicable, ammunition shouldbe stored under cover. This applied particu-larly to tracer ammunition.

h. When it is necessary to store ammunitionin open storage, raise it on dunnage at leastsix inches from the ground and cover it witha double thickness of paulin, leaving enoughspace for the free circulation of air throughthe stack. Suitable trenches should be dug toprevent water from running under the stack.

i. When ammunition is stored, it should besegregated by caliber or millimeter, type, andammunition lot.

j. When only a part of a box of ammunitionis issued or used the ammunition remainingin the ammunition box should b.e protected byfirmly fastening the cover.

k. Ammunition removed from the originalpacking should be tagged or marked so as topreserve the ammunition lot number.

5-5. Authorized Cartridges

The following cartridges are authorized foruse with this weapon:

a. Ball, Ml93

b. Tracer, Ml96

c. Dummy, Ml99

d. Blank, M200

54. Preparation for Firing

a. After removal, from packing materials,these cartridges are ready to be used.

b. Cartridges which are not used will bereturned to their original packings. (Such car-tridges will be used first in subsequent firingsso as to reduce stocks of opened packings.) Ifthe original packings are not utilized, theboxes in which the ammunition is storedshould be appropriately marked with the no-menclature of the cartridges and the ammuni-tion lot number.

5-7. Packing

The ammunition box and method of pack for5.56-mm ammunition for these weapons isgiven in drawings, specifications, or as speci-fied in the procurement contract. The ammu-nition box presently being used has beendesigned to withstand all conditions common-ly encountered in handling, storing, and trans-portation of the ammunition.

DEMOLITION OF MATERIEL TO PREVENT ENEMY USE

6- l . Genera l

a. Rifles, subject to capture or abandonmentin the combat zone, will be destroyed only bythe authority of the unit commander, in ac-cordance with orders of, or policy establishedby the army commander. The destruction ofequipment is to be reported through regularCommand channels.

b. The information which follows is for guid-ance only. Certain of the procedures outlinedrequire use of explosives and inc:endiary gre-nades, normally not authorized items of issueto the using organization. Issue of these andrelated items, and conditions under which de-struction will be effected are command deci-sions based on the tactical situation. Of theseveral means of destruction, the followinggenerally apply :Mechanical Requires axe, pick mattock,

sledge, crowbar , or otherflammables or welding orcutting torch.

Burning Requires gasoline, oil, incendi-ary grenades, and other flam-mables or welding or cuttingtorch.

Demolition

Gunfire

Requires suitable explosives orammunition.

Includes artillery, machine gun,rifle grenades, and launchersusing antitank rockets. Undersome circumstances, handgrenades may be used.

Disposal Requires burying in the ground,dumping in streams or marsh-es, or scattering so widely asto preclude recovery of essen-tial parts.

Destruction of essential ‘parts by mechanicalmeans will render the rifle useless, however,

selection depends upon utilizing facilities onhand under existing conditions. Time is usu-ally critical.

c. If destruction to prevent enemy use isresorted to, the rifle and bipod must be dam-aged so that they cannot be restored to ausable condition in combat zone either by re-pair or cannibalization. Adequate destructionrequires that all parts essential to the oper-ation of the rifle and bipod be destroyed ordamaged beyond repair. However, when lackof time and personnel preventall parts, priority is given toparts in the following order:

(1) Bolt carrier group(2) Upper receiver group(3) Lower receiver group

It is equally important that the

d. If destruction is directed, due considera-tion should be given observance of appropri-ate safety precautions.

kl. Scope

This appendix lists basic issue items, repairparts, and special tools required for the per-formance of organizational maintenance of theRifles Ml6 and M16A1, and Bipod, Rifle, M3.

E-2. General

The Basic Issue Items, Repair Parts, andSpecial Tools List is divided into the followingsections :

a. Basic Issue Items List-Section II. A listof items which accompany the rifles and bipodand are required for installation, operation, ormaintenance.

b. Maintenance and Operating Supplies-Sec-tion III. A listing of maintenance and oper-ating supplies required for initial operation.

c. Prescribed Load Allowance (PLA )-Sec-tion IV. A composite listing of repair parts,special tools, test and support equipmenthaving quantitative allowances for initialstockage at the organizational level.

T High dollar value recoverable repair parts whichare subject to special handling and are issuedon an exchange basis. Such repair parts arenormally repaired or overhauled at depotmaintenance activities.

U Repair parts specifically selected for salvage byreclamation units because of precious metalcontent, critical materials, high dollar valuereusable casings, etc.

S Repair parts and assemblies which are econo-mically repairable at DSU and GSU activitiesand normally are furnished by supply on anexchange basis. However, when these itemsare determined to be uneconomically repairableby a GSU they will be evacuated to a depotfor evaluation and analysis before final dis-position.

b. Federal Stock Number. Indicates theFederal stock number assigned to the item andwill be used for requisitioning purposes.

c. Deiscription. Indicates the Federal itemname and any additional description of theitem required. The abbreviation “w/e” whenused as a part of the nomenclature, indicates

that the Federal stock number includes allarmament, equipment, accessories, and repairparts issued with the item. A part number orother reference number is followed by the ap-plicable five-digit Federal supply code formanufacturers in parentheses.

d. Unit of Measure (U/M). A 2 characteralphabetic abbreviation indicating the amountor quantity of the item upon which the al-lowances are based, e.g., ft, ea, pr, etc.

e. Quantity Incorporated in Unit. Indicatesthe quantity of repair parts in a group or as-sembly. A “V” appearing in this column is lieuof a quantity indicates that a definite quantitycannot be indicated (e.g. shims, spacers, etc.).

f. Qua,ntity Furnished with Equipment. In-dicates the quantity of an item furnished withthe equipment (BIIL only).

g. Component Application. Identifies thecomponent application of each maintenance oroperating supply item (M&O supplies only).

h. Quantity Required for Initial Operation.Indicates the quantity of each maintenance oroperating supply item required for initialoperation of the equipment (M&O suppliesonly).

i. Quantity Required for 8 Hours Operation.Indicates the estimated quantities required foran average 8 hours of operation (M&O suppliesonly).

j. Notes. Indicates informative notes keyedto data appearing in a preceding column (M&Osupplies only).

k. 15-Day Organizational Maintenance Al-lowances.

(1) The allowance columns are divided in-to four subcolumns. Indicated in each sub-column opposite the first appearance of eachitem is the total quantity of items authorizedfor the number of equipments supported. Sub-sequent appearances of the same item willhave the letters “REF” in the allowancecolumns. Items authorized for use as requiredbut not for initial stockage are identified withan asterisk in the allowance column.

(2) The quantitative allowances for or-ganizational level of maintenance represents

one initial prescribed load for a 15-day period,for the number of equipments supported. Unitsand organizations authorized additional pre-scribed loads will multiply the number ofprescribed loads authorized by the quantity ofrepair parts reflected in the appropriatedensity column to obtain the total quantity ofrepair parts authorized.

(3) Organizational units providing main-tenance for more than 100 of these equipmentsshall determine the total quantity of parts re-quired by converting the equipment quantityto a decimal factor by placing a decimal pointbefore the next to last digit of the number toindicate hundredths, and multiplying the deci-mal factor by the parts quantity authorized inthe 51-100 a l lowance column. Example ,authorized allowance for 51-100 equipments is12; for 140 equipments multiply 12 by 1.40 or16.80 rounded off to 17 parts required.

(4) Subsequent changes to allowances willbe limited as follows: No change in therange of items is authorized. If additionalitems are considered necessary, recommenda-tions should be forwarded to CommandingGeneral, Headquarters, U.S. Army WeaponsCommand, ATTN : AMSWE-SMM-SA, RockIsland, Ill 61201, for exception or revi-sion to the allowance list. Revisions to therange of items authorized will be made by theU.S. Army Weapons Command based uponengineering experience, demand data, orTAERS information.

1. Illustration.

(1) Figure Number. Indicates the figurenumber of the illustration in which the item isshown.

(2) Item Number. Indicates the calloutnumber used to reference the item in the il-lustration.

B-5. How to locate Repair Parts

a. When Federal stock number is unknown :

(1) First. Using the table of contentsdetermine the functional group or assembly,within which the repair part belongs. This isnecessary because separate illustrations areprepared for functional groups and assemblies,and listings are divided into the same groups.

(2) Second. Find the illustration coveringthe functional group or assembly to which therepair part belongs.

(3) Third. Identify the repair part on theillustration and note the illustration figure anditem number of the repair part.

(4) Fourth. U s i n g t h e r e p a i r p a r t slisting, find the functional group or assemblyto which the repair part belongs and locate theillustration figure and item number noted inthe illustration.

b. When Federal stock number or referencenumber is known:

(1) First. Using the Index of FederalStock Numbers and Reference Numbers, findthe pertinent Federal stock number or refer-ence number. This index is in ascending FSNsequence followed by a list of reference num-bers in alpha-numeric sequence, cross-refer-enced to the illustration figure number anditem number.

(2) Second. U s i n g t h e R e p a i r P a r tListing, find the functional group or assemblyof the repair part and the illustration figurenumber and item number referenced in theIndex of Federal Stock Numbers and Refer-ence Numbers.

Section I. INTRODUCTION

C-l. General ,

The maintemkce allocation chart indicatesspecific maintenance operations performed atproper maintenance levels. Deviation frommaintenance operations allocated in the chartis authorized only upon approval of the Com-manding Officer.

C-2. Maintenance FunctionsThe maintenance allocation chart designates

overall responsibility for the maintenance func-tion of an end item or assembly. Maintenancefunctions will be limited to and defined as fol-lows :

To determine serviceability of an itemby comparing its physical, mechan-ical, and electrical characteristicswith established standards.

of an item to bring to optimumperformance.

To determine the corrections to bemade in the readings of instru-ments or test equipment used inprecise measurement. Consists ofthe comparison of two instruments,one of which is a certified standardof known accuracy, to detect andadjust any discrepancy in the ac-curacy of the instrument beingcompared with the certified stand-ard.

To set up for use in an operationalenvironment; such as, an emplace-ment, site, or vehicle.

Purpose and use of the format are as fol-lows :

a. Column a, Group Number. Lists groupnumbers, to identify components and as-semblies.

b. Column b, Component Assembly Nomen-clature. Lists the noun names of groups andassemblies on which maintenance is author-ized.

c. Column c, Maintenance Functions. Liststhe various categories of maintenance to beperformed on the weapon.
