    Research Programmes

The Institute offers opportunities for pursuing advanced research in frontier areas of science, engineering andtechnology to motivated and talented students with a keen sense of scientific inquiry. Research studentsconstitute the largest group on the campus (more than 70% of the student body). The Institute awards about250 Ph D and M.Sc(Engg) degrees, every year.

    Eligibility

The following categories of candidates are eligible to apply for admission to the research programme, subjectto satisfying requirements detailed in the subsequent sections:

    (a) Holders of Masters degree or its equivalent in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary Science/ Agriculture/ Humanities.

    (b) Holders of Masters degree or its equivalent in Engineering/Technology/ Architecture.

    (c) Holders of Bachelors degree or its equivalent in Engineering/Technology/ Medicine/ Architecture/Biotechnology/ Pharmacy/ Veterinary Science/ Agriculture.

    (d) Bachelors degree holders in Physics/ Chemistry/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer Science/Electronics followed by qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professionalsocieties recognised by UPSC/AICTE as being equivalent to a Bachelors degree in Engineering.

    (e) Holders of MBA or its equivalent subsequent to BE/B Tech, for admission to the department ofManagement Studies only.

Qualifying in one of the following appropriate Tests (with validity as on 1st of August 2012) is mandatory :

CSIR-UGC NET for JRF; or UGC-NET for JRF; or DBT JRF; or ICMR JRF; or JEST 2012; or NBHM 2012; orIISc Entrance Test 2012; or GATE 2011/2012. Qualifying in these tests is not mandatory but desirable forcandidates who possess a Masters degree in Engineering/Technology/ M Sc(Engg) or MS or MBA (post BE/BTech) and wish to apply for the departments in the Engineering Faculty.

    Additional notes

    1. The minimum requirement for admission to the research programme is a SECOND CLASS (asdeclared by the University) in the qualifying examination as indicated against each department.

    2. Candidates with B Sc followed by a professional Diploma, should have studied their B.Sc in the10+2+3 system and obtained at least a SECOND CLASS.

    3. Wherever Bachelors degree is prescribed, the minimum eligible qualification for admission, the duration of

the such degree courses should be atleast 4 years and wherever Masters degree is prescribed the minimumduration should be 2 years.

    4. The Master of Computer Science/Application holders should have studied B.Sc. with any of thefollowing as major subjects: Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Electronics / Computer Science.

    5. The minimum requirement of SECOND CLASS in the qualifying examination is relaxed to PASSCLASS for SC/ST candidates.

    6. Some departments have specific requirements of subjects at the Bachelors or 10+2 levels asindicated under each department. Candidates have to ensure that they meet these requirements.

    7. Those in the final year of their qualifying degree and awaiting results may also apply. However, they

should have completed all the requirements for the award of their qualifying degree, including allexaminations, dissertation projects, viva-voce, etc., by the time of joining, i.e., by the end of July2012.
