Last RiverDogs Game: July 2 Right-hander Rony Garcia turned in the second straight scoreless outing by a Charleston starter and catcher Jason Lopez mashed his fifth home run of the season to pad an early lead as the RiverDogs cruised to their third straight victory, 6-2, over the Greenville Drive and continued their league-best start to the second-half on Monday night at Fluor Field. Garcia (3-4) struck out three while yielding just two hits and one walk. For the fourth straight game, the Dogs found themselves locked in an early pitchers’ duel that was 0-0 after three. A pair of two- out knocks by DH Miguel Flames, an RBI single in his first game after a disabled list stint, and right fielder Mitchell Hansen, a triple, pushed Charleston out to a 2-0 advantage in the fourth. Lopez doubled the lead to 4-0 with one of the more impressive home runs of the 2018 campaign, a two-run fly off the batter’s eye that traveled an estimated 394 feet in the fifth. Second baseman Welfrin Mateo clobbered his third HR of the year in the eighth to pad the lead, his second at Fluor Field this season. Doggie Bites: Second-Half Surge: The RiverDogs are out to a league-best 8-2 start to the second-half as the Charleston club has come out of the All-Star break with their best 10-game stretch of the season after their third straight win on Sunday in Greenville. The Dogs rank T-2nd in the league in runs scored after the break (59, 5.9 per game) after ranking second-last in the league in runs scored over the first-half (254, 3.7 per game). Charleston is outscoring their opponents 59-38 (+21) in the 10 games since the break. Charleston has yet to win four games in a row this year. Se Fue for J-Lo: Appearing in the third spot in the order for just the second time this season on Monday, catcher Jason Lopez showcased his flashes of middle of the order pop, belting a two- run home run off the batters eye in center for his fifth of the season. The 20-year-old backstop keeps running up his career-best total after having collected just one homer in each of his first three pro seasons. Among SAL catchers, Lopez ranks third in slugging percentage (.458) and fourth in isolated power (.181). His .791 OPS ranks third best among all RiverDogs that have accrued at least 150 plate appearances, trailing only recently called up OF Steven Sensley and OF Pablo Olivares. You Mess with the Bull(pen), you get the Horns: Charleston’s bullpen has been key in the RiverDogs’ recent stretch of close ballgames. RiverDogs relievers have allowed just 4 ER (12 runs total) in 34.1 innings since the All-Star break, lowering the relief corps’ collective ERA to a 2.03 mark on the season. The RiverDogs are 31-1 this season when taking a lead into the ninth inning. Olivares Going the Farrest: After a four-day span in which he went 9-for-19 with 3 HR and 11 RBI, RiverDogs outfielder Pablo Olivares was named the SAL Player of the Week last Monday. The 20-year-old has hit safely in his last 11 straight, a stretch in which he has gone 19-for-47 (.404). Since the month of May, Olivares is hitting .368 (56-for-152), the best mark in the league over that span. He is currently 10 at-bats shy of qualifying for the league leaderboards in which he would rank first in batting (.352), second in OBP (.425), and third in OPS (.902). After ripping 3 homers in two days to finish the series in Lexington, he has 6 of his 8 career HR’s this season between Charleston and Tampa. Cabrera Coming Along: After a season-long 0-for-27 slide from May 15-21, infielder Oswaldo Cabrera is 38 for his last 124 (.306) with 10 XBH and 15 RBI at the dish, including homering in three times since the June 17 first-half finale. The long ball on Sunday in Asheville marked Cabrera’s career-high 5 th of the year after homering 4 times in each of his first two pro seasons. His personal-best 11-game hitting streak came to an end with a 0-for-4 night on Saturday, one shy of Leonardo Molina’s team-best 12 game stretch this year (5/2-5/18). Narrow Margins: Following Sunday’s 1-0 win, the RiverDogs have played 36 one-run games this season, the most in the South Atlantic League and contests in which they have gone 17-19. The Holy City has fared better at home, going 10-9 in games decided by one-run at The Joe versus a 7-10 mark on the road. 47 of the Holy City’s first 76 games have been decided by two runs or fewer, also the most in the league. Pinstriped Prospects: Once again, the RiverDogs tap into one of the premier farm systems in baseball with the New York Yankees. Recently rated the second-best farm system by Baseball America pre-season and the sixth-best by MLB.com, the Bronx Bombers boast five of MLB.com’s Preseason Top-100 prospects. Charleston’s current roster features five of the Yankees’ Top-30 prospects (MLB.com, BA): RHP Deivi Garcia (#16, #24), INF Dermis Garcia (#22, #20), INF Oswaldo Cabrera (--, #26), RHP Alexander Vargas (--, #28), and RHP Rony Garcia (--, #29). Doggie Bites:

• Second-Half Surge: The RiverDogs are out to a league-best 8-2 start to the second-half as the Charleston club has come out of the All-Star break with their best 10-game stretch of the season after their third straight win on Sunday in Greenville. The Dogs rank T-2nd in the league in runs scored after the break (59, 5.9 per game) after ranking second-last in the league in runs scored over the first-half (254, 3.7 per game). This Day in RiverDogs History…July 3, 2013

Three-time MVP Alex Rodriguez makes the second of two rehab appearance games with the RiverDogs,

drawing crowds of 7,000 plus on a Tuesday and Wednesday night at The Joe, including a massive audience of

8,255 on the first night. Hordes of New York media descend on the Lowcountry for their first chance to see the

Yankees star face live pitching since he was sidelined with arthroscopic surgery during the offseason and during

the midst of the Biogenesis scandal. Rodriguez went 0-for-4 in two games in a RiverDogs uniform.
