Chart Correction Course

For as long as navigational publications and paper charts are produced, it will continue to exists on board.However, it does requires maintenance, proper care and attention. The scope of this course is make sure that the world outfits of chart folios and navigational publications used for the intended voyages are well kept, up to date and corrected properly to latest corrections of Weekly Notices to Mariners.

Introduction


To use all available information from the Weekly Edition of Admiralty Notices to Mariners that affect charts and publications.

Objectives

To familiarize with the latest requirements for equipments used for updating charts.

To practice manual updating and management of charts and publications as per NP 294 and NP 100.


Why updated charts and publications?

Nautical charts & nautical publications, such as

sailing directions, lists of lights, notice to mariners,

tide tables & all other nautical publications

necessary for the intended voyage, shall be adequate

& up to date.

SOLAS Regulation 27 (Chapter V)

Upkeep of nautical Charts & Publications is a SOLAS / VMS / Oil Major requirement.

Hydrographic agency, volunteers and other government or non government bodies will not spent times, resources and efforts to collect and gathered any relevant information, if they think that update charts doesn’t have an important role to the seafarers for safe navigations and for the protection of environment.

Who supplies information, updates and data for affected charts and publications?


Even with space age technologies and fast growing development of sophisticated computers and electronics, most likely modern ships constructed and built today, depend on the clients requirements, may be fitted with latest and perhaps futuristic design of electronic charts, such as ENCs and ECDIS, however sophisticated equipments are, (under current legislations) they are supported or back up by paper bound copy of charts and publications

Why paper charts and publications, instead of electronic equipments and computers?


The Second Officer is responsible to the Master for proper correction and maintenance of all charts and navigational publications. The correction of Light Lists (LLs) and Admiralty Lists of Radio Signals (ALRS) may be delegated to the Third Officer

Equipment: TOOLS (Taken from NP 294)It is recommended that you must have proper tools before you begin to correct your charts.

What are the instruments and publications used in updating charts?

You need two pens with different sizes of nib, 0.18mm and 0.25mm. Use a 0.18mm nib to INSERT information and 0.25mm nib to

DELETE. To achieve optimum performance, the maintenance of these pens must be followed according to manufacturer’s instructions.

The colour should be violet so that you can see you corrections clearly under all light conditions. Also they will be clearly seen by

Port State, Flag State, Class and Insurance surveyor inspections teams.

2B - softer pencil also used and prefer by mariner for chartworks

7H – This is hard pencil with a sharp point for pin-pointing positions when using either a parallel rule and dividers or a Chart Correction Overlay (Tracing ). A Tracing is a useful tool for positioning of correcting quickly

This should be soft and used only for rubbing out pencil marks/tracks on charts. Soft eraser is recommended because it prolongs the life of a chart

and will not obliterate important information printed on the chart.

This is used when sticking NM block corrections and Notes / Cautions onto charts. POSITIONABLE MOUNTING ADHESIVE ROLLS, a 3M product brand ScotchTM is strongly recommended.

As there is no distortion to the chart or the block. You can obtain aperfect fit . A good substitute is a paste

There are two types: I. Roller II. Stepping

Both are perfectly suitable for the purpose of chart correction

Bow dividers are more sensitive for accurate positioning.

This should come with pen attachment for corrections where you have to draw large circles or sectors.

9. Hacksaw blade

11. Template

A useful tool which you can draw a cable. The blade must have 14 teeth to 1 inch. Be careful in using the blade so that your pen will flow over the teeth.

A steel straight edge, preferably 1 meter in length, is use to finda position on a chart. It is slower than parallel rule but it is moreaccurate.

With various sizes of holes, should be used for drawing radar stations, radio beacons, small circular limits, etc….


Equipments: PUBLICATIONS

These publications also serve as evidence that you are correcting your chart when inspection is conducted. Every publication is as important as a navigational chart for extracting information in passage planning.

NP 133A – Paper Chart Maintenance Record ( formerly called Chart Correction Log) This publication lists every chart numerically and is used to record corrections (by their NM number ) against any chart affected.

Entries are to be made in ‘ink’ for permanent corrections. The notice number to be recorded against the Chart affected within NP133A. Once the Chart is corrected in ‘ink’ cross out the relevant ANM number in pencil within NP133A

NP 133A - Paper Chart Maintenance Record Chart Correc

Within NP 133A the date of the New Edition/ New Chart should be also

entered in ink as a permanent record. The year date for the current year of

NMs should be underlined so that it is not confused with a NM number.

Entry Procedure for T & P Notices:

(T & P) notice numbers to be entered in pencil against the

affected chart number in NP133A & when the chart has been

actually corrected in pencil, the relevant notice number within

NP 133A should be struck out with a pencil to indicate that the

correction has been done.

Chart 5011 - Symbols & Abbreviation used on Admiralty Charts

It is a very useful tool for checking the accuracy of your record of corrections. This is published twice a year. The first is published in January and includes all ANM published during the previous two years. The July Edition includes all the ANM numbers published during the previous two and a half years. It also contain the latest edition dates for all charts in the British Admiralty series. It is the only source of information when you are setting up an ANM record system for the first time.

This is a booklet and it explain every symbol used on admiralty charts and should be used as a guide during the correcting process. Chart 5011 recognised by its old number, should be treated as a

chart and a correctable publication and should be updated from ANM when necessary.

What are the contents Weekly Edition of ANM’s?Updating of Admiralty charts and publications are promulgated weekly through the Weekly Editions of ANMs. Continuity must be observe starting from the first week of the year up to the last week which is usually numbered as week no 1 to 51 or 52. Every Weekly ANM’s contain the following sections

SECTION III Reprints of Selected Navigational Warnings

They are designed to give the mariner early information of important incidents which may constitute a danger to navigation. Many navigationalwarnings are of a temporary nature, but others remain in force for several weeks and may be succeeded by NtM. Navigational Warnings are of three types: NAVAREA warnings COASTAL warnings LOCAL warnings

The language used in both NAVAREA and Coastal warnings is invariably English, although warnings may be transmitted in one or more of the official languages of the United Nations

Warning received through the WWNWS and those in section III shouldbe plotted on in use chart in pencil.


SECTION IV Amendments to Admiralty Sailing Directions (SDs)

Admiralty Sailing Direction are complementary to the chart and to other navigational publications. It is important, therefore, to have asystem whereby any amendments can be easily retrieved and crossreferenced to the particular section of the parent publication.

It is recommended that the amendments are kept in a file with the latest “in force” list of amendments on the top. The list can then be consulted when using the Parent Book to see if any amendmentsaffecting the area under consideration are in force.

It is not recommended that amendments be stuck in the Parent Book or supplement.


SECTION V Amendments to Admiralty List of Lights of Fog Signals (ALLs)

Each week there are changes affecting volumes of ALLs. The most important of those changes are reflected in the chart updates but not necessarily in the same weekly edition

This information is printed on one side of the page so that you can either cut or stick it in the affected volume or keep it filed separately so that you can easily refer to it.

It is also important to annotate the record of amendments inside the front cover of each volume when the amendments have beencompleted

How to updates Admiralty Charts?In updating Admiralty Charts, Always refer to the ANM which is the source document. The UKHO produces the NTM block corrections and NTM tracings as a supplementary publications but care must be given when using the tracings. It should be noted that tracings is a guide only in illustrating the corrections and in pinpointing a position. A tracing is a tool only to be used to position a correction accurately and quickly.

By checking the ANM while looking at the chart in question you will avoid the risk of deleting information which otherwise could have been used to completed the new information being inserted.

Always insert information before you delete information.

A NTM is also accompanied by a block correction. You are expected to stick it as well as you can onto the affected chart. It is important to remember to cut off the enclosing black line around the limits of the area of the block before sticking in onto the chart.


PROCEDURE: (without TRACINGS )1. Check the Index of Affected Charts in Section II.2. Cross check the Index of Affected Charts to that of the list of charts you have on board3. Record the ANM number against the chart number in the NP

133A.(in pen)4. Go to the Index of Notices and Locate the actual notice.5. Insert correction in the chart.6. Check what you have done. When you are satisfied then,7. Write the ANM number in the bottom left hand corner of the chart as a record of the completed correction.NOTE: It is dangerous to apply the correction number in the bottom left hand corner of the chart before you have corrected the chart. 8. Cross through the ANM number adjacent to the chart in your NP 133A or similar record

FINAL NOTES:

Position must be exact.Depths and symbols must be clear.Legends and description must be readable.

Remember, you may have to read and understand corrections under a dim light in the teeth of a force 10 storm. Your life and others could depend upon it. It is important that the task of chart correcting is taken seriously and that the highest standards are maintained.


Plotting from Tracings on a Chart

The positioning of tracings should always be checked carefully using 3 methods, as follows;

• Latitude and Longitude lines shown

• Quadrant of chart (e.g. left of center)

• Other fitting marks shown such as sounding or prominent features

Note: If tracing is unreadable or damage, you can always retrievethe clear information into that particular NtM.
