Holding All Schools Accountable
Options for Low-Performing Charter Schools
Shortened renewal for the charter – allows CPS to evaluate performance on a more frequent basis and take further action if necessary.Renewal with conditions – allows CPS to place additional targets into contract which need to be met in order to be renewed.Non-renewal – Allows CPS to non-renew or close a charter school. Can be applied to a full network or individual campus.
Many charters elect to do their own internal turnaround in advance of their contract renewal

Comparing and Contrasting Renewal Process
Previous Renewal Process Renewal Process Moving Forward
5- year renewal granted if performing better than neighborhood schools
Renewal with conditions that may lead to closure if a level 3 school
Renewals applied uniformly to all campuses in a network of schools
Renewals may have conditions depending on individual campus performance that may lead to closure
Qualitative review provided for charter schools in advance of renewal process
Will focus renewal process on high standards for academic achievement by students
Run separately from other school actions Align renewals to school actions calendar

Next Steps
• Continue to merge renewal process into CPS school accountability timeline
• Move towards a single accountability system for all schools including school rating levels and probation status
• Potentially move all schools towards performance contracts
