FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Foundation- The World of Music- Transition

The second transition activity happened yesterday. Foundation parents came along to enjoy some time at school and find out a little bit more about the programs running while the children experienced a lesson about the world of music. Thank you to our amazing music teacher Mrs Digby and our wonderful Foundation teachers Mrs Spain, Miss Avraham and Miss Drennan for their terrific organisation of the session.

Year 4, 5 and 6

Our Year 5 and 6 children will be participating in the Lightning Premiership today in a variety of sports including softball, AFL, netball and soccer. This is an opportunity to put into practice the skills they have

learned over the past years of school while socialising with other children. Thank you to our senior teachers for supervising them. Our Year 4’s are going into central Melbourne to visit the Polly Woodside and our Year 3s have Aboriginal elder Murrindindi visiting to talk about dreamtime, stories and other aspects of Aboriginal culture.

Report Format

Your child’s report will be handed out on Monday 24th June and he or she will bring it home for you to look at before Parent Teacher Conferences on the Wednesday. Our school is committed to ensuring that every child has the best opportunity to achieve their full potential. The student reports are a key aspect of that commitment and, as noted last week, the format has changed. They are designed to clearly document

your child’s achievements to date, as well as the next steps in their future learning, what the school will do and what you can do at home. It will also have a record of attendance. We teach to the Victorian Curriculum Foundation–10 (F–10) which sets out what every student should learn during their first eleven years of schooling. The curriculum is the common set of knowledge and skills required by students for life-long learning, social development and active and informed citizenship. The Victorian Curriculum F–10 incorporates the Australian Curriculum and reflects Victorian priorities and standards. The Victorian Curriculum Learning areas are: The Arts: (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, Visual Arts, Visual Communication, Design); English, Health and Physical Education, The Humanities (Economics and Business, Civics and Citizenship, Geography, History,) Languages, Mathematics, Science, Technologies, (Design and Digital Technologies.) There are also four capabilities in the Victorian Curriculum which are taught through the learning areas: Critical and Creative Thinking, Ethical, Intercultural, Personal and Social Management capabilities. Principal Conference

Mrs Ward, Mr Bourke and I attended the South-Eastern Regional Leadership Conference in Melbourne last week on Wednesday. We joined hundreds of fellow Principals and Assistant Principals not just from this network but throughout the region. This was very valuable professional development for the three of us and we will look forward to sharing it with our staff and school community in the near future.

Parenting Advice

Being a parent is a huge responsibility and many parents will feel that when their child is not doing well in life, they have failed. Good parenting is developing a child that has empathy, self-esteem, honesty and self-control. They will be happier, motivated by a desire to achieve when nurtured properly. Later in life, this will help the child through adolescence, protecting them from eating disorders and anti-social behaviour to mention only a couple of the upcoming challenges. Well-adapted children are less likely to turn to drugs and alcohol through their teen years as they become focused on intellectual curiosities instead. Your relationship with your child will reflect on how they act. If you have a good relationship, your kids will listen to you. If you do not, they will ignore you, with no reasonable possibility of teaching them anything. Be the kind of person you wish your children to grow

up to be. Continue to strive for goals and be a positive influence on your kids. Avoid talking about other people or being rude to the individual who bags your groceries for example. Your children look up to you so what you do, they will likely mimic. Keep yourself busy and do things that allow you to feel good as well. Your child will see this and integrate it into their development. Remember that you are the adult and they are the child and it is okay to say No!!!

Marine Ambassadors

I had the pleasure along with Kirsty Cash of taking our Marine Ambassador representatives to environmental lessons last Tuesday. We journeyed to Carrum Downs to have a look at the wetlands and the drainage and filtering processes which protect our suburban environments. We also went to Mordialloc beach and foreshore to learn about rubbish collection and setting up environmental surveys. The messages are based around cleaning up our environment and doing as much as we can to educate our young and upcoming children on sustainability. Pledges by families will result in healthier marine life in our waterways. A huge thank you goes out to Mrs Beaton for organising the day for the children.

Every Day Counts

When your child comes to school every day, they will achieve their best. Here are some tips for helping your child turn up, achieve more and maintain a good attendance habit:

Let your child know it is important to go to school every day

One of the best ways to encourage your child to go to school every day is to talk about school in a positive way. Tell your child it is important that they go to school, even on special days like their birthday or the last day of term. Occasionally, your child may need to stay home from school -they might be sick, or there might be serious family matters you have to attend to (such as a funeral). While these kinds of events are unavoidable, other events such as shopping trips, holidays, visiting family and friends, or appointments such as haircuts can be scheduled out of school hours.

Create routines for your child

Help your child get organised and prepare for their school day. Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. Encourage them to lay their school clothes out the night before and pack their bags in advance so they can get to school on time.

How can you help?

Talk positively about school with your child. Create and maintain a routine.

If possible, make appointments out of school hours.

Avoid taking your child away for holidays during the school term.

Enrol Now for 2020

We are open for 2020 enrolments and forms can be collected at the Office. If you have a child turning 5 by April 30, 2020, please complete an enrolment form and bring in a copy of your child’s birth certificate and immunisation record and we will process the enrolment immediately. It helps us enormously with planning, if we have a clear indication of enrolments as early as possible.

Junior School Council

Our Junior School Council have asked for basketball and netball nets which have been put up as well as new wheelie bins to place rubbish in.

Thought For the Day WAYNE BACH Principal

CEPS KIDS ARE

FRIENDLY KIDS

This term we are working on

RESPECT

and next week we are looking at

Respecting Differences

There are many things we have in

common and share at Cheltenham East Primary School. But there are many ways

in which we all differ. Some of us like football, while others prefer netball. Some like maths, others prefer reading

books. Some people like to listen to CDs; others like to play on the computer.

Some like the Saints and some go for the Bombers. Some of us are tall, some of us are short. Some are strong and some are

fast.

In some way or another we are all different and that makes us all the more interesting. It would be pretty boring if

everyone went around doing exactly the same thing - we would all be like robots.

Thankfully we are not robots, we are human and we are all different. Even in the same family we are different from our

brothers and sisters.

Rather than worrying about these differences we need to accept and respect them, and also to celebrate them. It is

good that we are all different from each other; all special and unique.

STUDENT ABSENCES All Cheltenham East students should be at school daily unless sick, at unavoidable appointments, or away on holidays. Parents/Carers of children with an unexplained absence will receive a text SMS at 10.00 am on the day of absence. Children arriving late should be signed in at the school office and obtain a “Late Pass” to present to the teacher. The Parent Portal in Sentral is the preferred and easiest way to advise us of your child’s absences – there is room to enter the date/s and the reason, and you can also enter future absences (for holidays, appointments).
