Chemical & Process Engineering Services

TAMI Institute for Research & Development Ltd. P.O.B. 10140, Haifa Bay, Israel, 2611101 Tel: +972-4-8469550 Fax: +972-4-8469309 www.tami-imi.com

Process Engineering at TAMI is an integrated, interdisciplinary effort involving: research chemists, process engineers and design engineers, supported by TAMI analytical services, corrosion department, safety and waste water treatment and accompanied by TAMI QA staff.

The process development services include developing complete industrial processes from basic concepts, improving single steps, de-bottlenecking, troubleshooting, and production in ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 approved facilities and according to customers requirements, with production under cGMP conditions being available.

In addition, TAMI provides various engineering solutions for raw materials recycling and waste treatment for specific waste streams and/or for the whole factory streams. The Integrated Method for Process Development, applied in TAMI, ensures the most efficient route to a complete process development:

• Literature survey

• Process and data analysis

• Process Safety Analysis, HAZOP, “what-if” scenarios and stability tests

• Generation of data for definition of reaction and down-stream operations with emphasis on process safety:

Study using RC-1 calorimeter of process thermo-chemistry. Measurement of heat of reaction, reaction kinetics, detection of eventual potential runaway phenomena.

Phase equilibrium (vapor pressure, solubility, distribution coefficient).

Physical constants (density, viscosity, interfacial tension).

Study of crystallization process using FBRM (Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement) and PVM (Particle Video Microscopy), for the study in real time of crystal habit and size.

• Choice of unit operations, Testing and evaluation of corrosion, choice of material of construction

• Computerized simulation using ASPEN PLUS, CHETA, VISIMIX

• Scale up, process design and choice of equipment. Process flow diagram issued (PFD) for client approval

• Integral development of process waste management

• Process verification in mini pilot scale

The Mini Pilot ConceptTAMI mini-pilot plant is a 1600 m2, permanent multi-purpose Facility, for rapid process development on a small scale (up to several kilograms). The mini pilot plant enables reduction of the time required to get new products to the market, by using a scale-down technique that gives full process definition at the 25-250L scale.

The micro reactor enables study of highly exothermic reactions under safe conditions and the study of reactions of high-value reactants using a minimum quantity of material.

• Scale down of industrial equipment

• Complete process development at small scale

• Controlled and flexible design

• Computer controlled and with ASPEN PLUS, CHETAH and VISIMIX simulators for modeling and optimization

• Batch or continuous operation

• Minimal manpower, raw materials & wastes

• Significant savings in process development costs and time

The Mini Pilot Capabilities• Process development based on data supplied

by the customer

• Process improvement, verification, de-bottlenecking

• Preparation of samples for market development

The Mini Pilot Equipment• 4 fully ventilated enclosed workstations (6m)

• Multipurpose glass, glass-lined, stainless steel and Hastelloy C reactors (16-250L), all installed in walk-in cupboards

• Corning Microreactor

• 4 high pressure bays with autoclaves ranging between 0.5-20L up to 100 bar

• RC-1 reaction calorimeter – 0.5-2 liter glass and 2 liter stainless steel pressure reactor

• RC-1 reactor equipped with FBRM (Focused Beam Reflectance Measurement) and PVM (Particle Video Microscopy) for study in real time of crystal habit and size distribution during crystallization process

Downstream Equipment:

• Thin/Wiped film evaporators

• Roto vapor

• Fractional distillation columns

• Extraction columns

• Filters: centrifuges (basket, peeler), vacuum and pressure filters, Agitated filter dryer

• Agitators for highly viscous materials: Kneader - 3 liter, List kneader/dryer - 1 liter

• Various dryers including spray dryer and paddle dryer

Membrane Technology Capabilities

• Full range of membranes: focusing on feasibility tests: micro, ultra, nano, reverse osmosis (RO) and forward osmosis (FO)

• Laboratory scale high pressure driven membrane units (deadend and cross flow) suitable for feasibility tests of a wide spectrum of applications

• Laboratory scale forward osmosis unit suitable for feasibility tests of FO applications

• Process development by combination of various types of Membranes

Pilot PlantThe Pilot Plant at TAMI enables semi-commercial production in quantities from a few kilograms of up to the first few tons. The pilot facilities are computer monitored and supported by Aspen Plus process simulator, thus providing reliable engineering data on new processes for scale-up to production level. The production may be based on process development at TAMI according to the customer’s request and specification or on process data supplied by the customer and verified on a small scale at TAMI. In both cases the operation is carried out in full coordination with the customer.

Pilot Plant Capabilities• Process study and scale up or scale down

• Large scale process development

• Semi-commercial production in quantities of a few kilograms up to the first few tons in an ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 18001 approved facility
