Process engineering often involves closecollaboration between engineers and scientistsfrom a variety of disciplines. The MSc in ChemicalProcess Engineering at UCL is specificallydesigned to facilitate this collaboration andprovides graduates from a variety of engineeringand science disciplines with the advanced trainingrequired to enter the chemical or biochemicalindustries.

 Degree summary

// UCL Chemical Engineering, situated in the heart of London, is one ofthe top-rated departments in the UK, being internationally renownedfor its outstanding research.

// The programme is the first of its kind in the UK and is accredited bythe Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) as meeting IChemE'srequirements for Further Learning to Master's Level. This recognitionwill fulfil an important academic qualification for MSc graduates withsuitable first degrees in eventually becoming Corporate Members ofIChemE.

The programme is delivered through a combination of lecture-basedcourses, individual and group activities, assessed coursework andtutorial sessions. Advanced design or research projects are provided toextend knowledge and understanding of the topics studied and toencourage critical thinking. Creativity and innovation is encouraged onthe demonstration of sound judgement and assumptions. Assessment ismainly through examinations, coursework and reports.

 Degree structure

Mode: Full-time: 1 year

Location: London, Bloomsbury

The MSc in Chemical Process Engineering aims to provide students witha solid academic background in a broad range of Chemical Engineeringtopics and advanced skills in problem-solving necessary for asuccessful career in the sector.

// For 2017/18, the MSc in Chemical Process Engineering programme consists of sevenmodules selected from a list of available modules.

// From 2018/19, the programme will be split into three different routes with differentcompulsory and optional modules. The routes are:

// Advanced Chemical Engineering Route (accredited by the IChemE)

// Design Route (accredited by the IChemE)

// Research Route

// Apart from this, the programme remains unchanged.

DISSERTATION/REPORT

// All students undertake either a research project or a design project, which culminates ina project report and an oral examination.

 Your career

Upon completion, our graduates can expect to play a major role indeveloping the technologies that make available most of the things thatwe use in everyday life and provide the expertise and technology toenhance our health and standard of living. These activities may involvethe development of new materials, food processing, water treatment, pharmaceuticals, transport and energy resources as well as being at thefrontline, addressing present environmental issues such as climatechange.

Typical destinations of recent graduates include: Amec Process andEnergy, British Petroleum, Royal Dutch Shell, National Grid, Health &Safety Executive. Career profiles of some of our recent MSc graduatesare available on our website.

Employability

Students gain in-depth knowledge of core chemical engineeringsubjects and of the advanced use of computers in process design, operation and management. They receive thorough training in hazardidentification, quantification and mitigation, as well as in riskmanagement and loss prevention, and also learn how to designadvanced energy systems, with emphasis on sustainability, energyefficiency and the use of renewable energy sources. Students learn howto make decisions under uncertain scenarios and with limited availabledata and receive training on how to plan, conduct and manage acomplex (design or research) project.
