Through creative application of these chemical engineering principles, chemical engineers create innovative solutions to important industrial and societal problems in areas such as development of clean energy sources, advancement of life sciences, production of pharmaceuticals, sustainable systems and responsible environmental stewardship, and discovery and production of new materials. The Department of Chemical Engineering at MIT offers four undergraduate programs. Course 10 leads to the Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering through a curriculum that prepares the graduate for a wide range of career pursuits. Course 10-B leads to the Bachelor of Science in Chemical-Biological Engineering, which includes the basic engineering core from the Course 10 degree and adds material in basic and applied biology. Bachelor of Science in Chemical-Biological Engineering (Course10-B)This degree (http://catalog.mit.edu/degree-charts/chemical-biological-engineering-course-10-b) is intended for the student whois specifically interested in the application of chemical engineeringin the areas of biochemical and biomedical technologies. The degreerequirements include core chemical engineering subjects andadditional subjects in biological sciences and applied biology. Thisdegree is excellent preparation for students also considering thebiomedical engineering minor or medical school.

Course 10-B is accredited by the Engineering AccreditationCommission of ABET (http://www.abet.org) as a chemical andbiological engineering degree.

Students who decide early to major in either Course 10 or Course 10-B are encouraged to take subjects such as 5.111/5.112 Principles ofChemical Science, 5.12 Organic Chemistry I, and 7.01x IntroductoryBiology in their freshman year. Then 5.60 Thermodynamics andKinetics, 18.03 Differential Equations, 10.10 Introduction toChemical Engineering, 10.213 Chemical and Biological EngineeringThermodynamics, and 10.301 Fluid Mechanics may be taken in thesophomore year. The student is then well positioned for more in-depth and specialized subjects in the third and fourth years.

Some students may wish to defer choice of a major field or exercisemaximum freedom during the first two years. If the RestrictedElectives in Science and Technology (REST) Requirement subjectschosen in the second year include 18.03 Differential Equations andtwo subjects in the fields of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics,chemistry, biology, or chemical engineering, students can generallycomplete the requirements for a degree in chemical engineeringin two more years. Students are advised to discuss their proposedprogram with a Course 10 faculty advisor as soon as they becomeinterested in a degree in chemical engineering. Insteadof continuing in depth in these areas, students can add breadthby study in another field, such as another engineering discipline,biology, biomedical engineering, economics, or management.Course 10-C is attractive to students who wish to specialize in an

area such as those cited above while simultaneously gaining a broadexposure to the chemical engineering approach to solving problems.

Students planning to follow this curriculum should discuss theirinterests with their faculty advisor in the department at the time theydecide to enter the Course 10-C program, and submit to Dr. BarryS. Johnston in the department's Undergraduate Office a statementof goals and a coherent program of subjects no later than springterm of junior year. Bachelor of Science in Engineering as Recommended by theDepartment of Chemical Engineering (Course 10-ENG)The 10-ENG degree program (http://catalog.mit.edu/degree-charts/engineering-chemical-engineering-course-10-eng) is designed tooffer flexibility within the context of chemical engineering whileensuring significant engineering content, and is a complementto our chemical engineering degree programs 10 and 10-B. Thedegree is designed to enable students to pursue a deeper level ofunderstanding in a specific interdisciplinary field that is relevant tothe chemical engineering core discipline. The degree requirementsinclude all of the core chemical engineering coursework, plusa chosen set of three foundational concept subjects and foursubjects with engineering content that make up a comprehensiveconcentration specific to the interdisciplinary area selected by thestudent. The concentrations have been selected by the Departmentof Chemical Engineering to represent new and developing cross-disciplinary areas that benefit from a strong foundation inengineering within the chemical engineering context. Details of theconcentrations are available from the Chemical Engineering StudentOffice and the department's website (http://web.mit.edu/cheme/academics/undergrad).

The foundational concept component of the flexible engineeringdegree consist of basic science and engineering subjects thathelp lay the groundwork for the chosen concentration. Threesubjects must be selected from a list of potential topics. One ofthe foundational concept subjects must be a chemical engineeringCI-M subject, and one must be a laboratory subject that satisfiesthe Institute Laboratory Requirement. The subjects should beselected with the assistance of a 10-ENG degree advisor from theChemical Engineering Department so as to be consistent with thedegree requirements of the program and the General InstituteRequirements. Several of these subjects can satisfy the program'sCI-M requirement.

The flexible engineering concentration consists of four subjects thatare selected by the student from a suggested subject list providedfor each 10-ENG concentration; the student also may proposesubjects that fit the theme of the chosen concentration. These listsare included in the concentration descriptions provided on thedepartment's website and at the Chemical Engineering StudentOffice. Students work with their 10-ENG advisors to propose a 10-

ENG degree program, which must then be approved by the ChemicalEngineering Undergraduate Committee.

The flexible engineering degree major capstone experience consistsof 12 units and/or a senior-level project. Alternatively, the studentmay choose to complete a senior thesis in a topic area relevant tothe concentration. Senior-level projects or senior thesis projectsare specifically designed to integrate engineering principlesinto specific applications or problems and are not standardUROP projects; such projects require the preliminary approval of thedepartment's undergraduate officer.

Course 10-ENG is accredited by the Engineering AccreditationCommission of ABET (http://www.abet.org) as an engineeringdegree.

Five-Year Programs and Joint ProgramsIn addition to offering separate programs leading to the Bachelorof Science and Master of Science in Chemical Engineering, thedepartment offers a program leading to the simultaneous award ofboth degrees at the end of five years. A detailed description of thisprogram is available from the Graduate Student Office. Studentsin the five-year program normally enroll in the School of ChemicalEngineering Practice.

For chemical engineering students interested in nuclearapplications, the Department of Chemical Engineering and theDepartment of Nuclear Engineering offer a five-year program leadingto the joint Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and Masterof Science in Nuclear Engineering. Such programs are approvedon an individual basis between the registration officers of the twodepartments.

Graduate Study

Graduate study provides both rigorous training in the fundamentalcore discipline of chemical engineering and the opportunity to focuson specific subdisciplines. In addition to completing the four coresubject requirements in thermodynamics, reaction engineering,numerical methods, and transport phenomena, students select aresearch advisor and area for specialization, some of which arediscussed below.

Thermodynamics and Molecular Computation. Thermodynamicsis a cornerstone of chemical engineering. Processes as diverse aschemical production, bioreaction, creation of advanced materials,protein separation, and environmental treatment are governed by

thermodynamics. The classical concepts of equilibrium, reversibility,energy, and entropy are basic to the analysis and design ofthese processes. The extension of classical thermodynamics tomolecular scales by use of statistical mechanics has made molecularsimulation an increasingly valuable tool for the chemical engineer.Prediction of macroscopic behavior from molecular computations isbecoming ever more feasible. This venerable field continues to yieldfruitful areas of inquiry.

Opportunities in the department for graduate study in this fieldinclude predicting properties of materials and polymers frommolecular structure, applying quantum mechanics to catalystdesign, supercritical fluid processing, the behavior of complex fluidswith environmental and biomedical applications, phase equilibriumwith simple and complex molecular species, immunology, proteinstabilization, nucleation and crystallization of polymer andpharmaceuticals, and many other areas of classical and statisticalthermodynamics.

Transport Processes. A fluid deforming and flowing as forces areimposed on it, its temperature varying as heat is transferred throughit, the interdiffusion of its distinct molecular species—these areexamples of the processes of transport. These transport processesgovern the rates at which velocity, temperature, and compositionvary in a fluid; chemical engineers study transport to be able todescribe, predict, and manage these changes. Research includesexperimental testing and analytical and computational modeling;its applications range among an enormous variety of mechanical,chemical, and biological processes.

Current work includes the study of polymer molecular theoryand polymer processing, transport and separations inmagnetorheological fluids, membrane separations, diffusion incomplex fluids, defect formation and evolution in near-crystallinematerials, microfluidics, fluid instability, transport in living tissue,numerical solution of field equations, and many other areas oftransport phenomena.

Catalysis and Chemical Reaction Engineering. A simple chemicalreaction—the rearrangement of electrons and bonding partners—occurs between two small molecules. From understanding thekinetics of the reaction, and the equilibrium extent to which itcan proceed, come applications: the network of reactions duringcombustion, the chain reactions that form polymers, the multiplesteps in the synthesis of a complex pharmaceutical molecule, thespecialized reactions of proteins and metabolism. Chemical kineticsis the chemical engineer's tool for understanding chemical change.

A catalyst influences the reaction rate. Catalysts are sought forincreasing production, improving the reaction conditions, andemphasizing a desired product among several possibilities. Thechallenge is to design the catalyst, to increase its effectiveness andstability, and to create methods to manufacture it.

A chemical reactor should produce a desired product reliably,safely, and economically. In designing a reactor, the chemical

engineer must consider how the chemical kinetics, often modifiedby catalysis, interacts with the transport phenomena in flowingmaterials. New microreactor designs are expanding the concept ofwhat a reactor may do, how reactions may be conducted, and what isrequired to scale a process from laboratory to production.

Research is being conducted in the department at the forefront ofcatalyst design, complex chemical synthesis, bioreactor design,surface- and gas-phase chemistry, miniaturization of reactors,mathematical modeling of chemical reaction networks, and manyother areas of chemical reaction engineering. Applications includethe manufacturing of chemicals, refining of fuels for transportationand power, and microreactors for highly reactive or potentiallyhazardous materials.

Polymers. Wondrous materials found in nature and now synthesizedin enormous quantity and variety, polymers find an ever-increasinguse in manufactured products. Polymers are versatile becausetheir properties are so wide-ranging, as is evident even in theconceptually simple polymers made from a single molecular species.The versatility becomes more profound in the copolymers madefrom multiple precursors, and the polymers compounded withfiller materials. Research in polymers encompasses the chemicalreactions of their formation, methods of processing them intoproducts, means of modifying their physical properties, and therelationship between the properties and the underlying molecular-and solid-phase structure.

Graduate research opportunities in the department include studiesof polymerization kinetics, non-Newtonian rheology, polymer thinfilms and interfaces, block copolymers, liquid crystalline polymers,nanocomposites and nanofibers, self-assembly and patterning, andmany other areas of polymer science and engineering. In additionto a program in graduate study in polymers within the department,the interdisciplinary Program in Polymers and Soft Matter (PPSM)provides a community for researchers in the polymer field and offersa program of study that focuses on the interdisciplinary nature ofpolymer science and engineering.

Materials. The inorganic compounds found in nature are the basisfor new materials made by modifying molecular composition (suchas purifying silicon and doping it with selected impurities) andstructure (such as control of pore and grain size). These materialshave electronic, mechanical, and optical properties that supporta variety of novel technologies. Other materials are applied ascoatings—thin films that create a functional surface. Still othermaterials have biological applications, such as diagnostic sensorsthat are compatible with living tissue, barriers that control therelease of pharmaceutical molecules, and scaffolds for tissuerepair. A new generation of biomaterials is being derived frombiological molecules. Research in materials is wide-ranging andhighly interdisciplinary, both fundamental and applied. In thedepartment, materials research includes studies in plasma etching,thin-film chemical vapor deposition, crystal growth, nano-crystallinestructure, molecular simulation, scaffolds for bone and soft tissue

regeneration, biocompatible polymers, and many other areas ofmaterials engineering.

Surfaces and Nanostructures. In many arrangements of matter, theinterfaces between phases—more than their bulk compositions—arecritical to the material structure and behavior. The surfaces of solidsoffer a platform for functional coating; coatings may be depositedfrom vapor, applied as a volatile liquid, or assembled from solutiononto the solid, in a pattern determined by the molecular properties.This self-assembly tendency may be exploited to arrange desiredpatterns that have operational properties. Interfacial effects arealso responsible for stable dispersions of immiscible phases,leading to fluids with complex microstructure. Other structuredfluids arise from large molecules whose orientation in the solventis constrained by molecular size and properties. In solids, tightcontrol of pore size, grain size, chemical composition, and crystalstructure offer a striking range of catalytic, mechanical, andelectromagnetic properties. The understanding of gas-solid kineticsis crucial to the study of heterogeneous catalysis and integratedcircuit fabrication. Structure is the basis for function, and bymanipulating tiny length scales, the resulting nanostructure makesavailable new capabilities, and thus new technologies and products.Graduate study in surfaces and nanostructures may include studiesof colloids, emulsions, surfactants, and other structured fluidswith biological, medical, or environmental applications. It alsoencompasses thin films, liquid crystals, sol-gel processing, controlof pharmaceutical morphology, nanostructured materials, carbonnanotubes, surface chemistry, surface patterning, and many otherareas of nanotechnology and surface science.

Biological Engineering. Chemical engineering thermodynamics,transport, and chemical kinetics, so useful for manufacturingprocesses, are fruitful tools for exploring biological systems aswell. Biological engineering research may be directed at molecular-level processes, the cell, tissues, the organism, and large-scalemanufacturing in biotech processes. It may be applied to producingspecialized proteins, genetic modification of cells, transportof nutrients and wastes in tissue, therapeutic methods of drugdelivery, tissue repair and generation, purification of productmolecules, and control strategies for complex bioproductionplants. Its methods include analytical chemistry and biochemistrytechniques, bioinformatic processing of data, and computationalsolution of chemical reaction and transport models. Biologicalengineering is an extraordinarily rich area for chemical engineers,and its consequences—theoretical, medical, commercial—will be far-reaching.

Opportunities in the department for graduate study in biologicalengineering include manipulation and purification of proteins andother biomolecules, research into metabolic processes, tissueregeneration, gene regulation, bioprocesses, bioinformatics, drugdelivery, and biomaterials, to name a few. Both experimental andcomputational methods are used, including statistical mechanicsand systems theory. Chemical engineering faculty are also involvedin the Center for Biomedical Engineering, created to enhance

interdisciplinary research and education at the intersection ofengineering, molecular and cell biology, and medicine. The Novartis-MIT Center for Continuous Manufacturing, another center of researchactivity involving chemical engineers, promises to revolutionize thechemical processing of pharmaceuticals.

Energy and Environmental Engineering. Making energy available tosociety requires finding and producing a range of fuels, improvingthe efficiency of energy use under the ultimate limits imposedby thermodynamics, and reducing the effects of these processeson the environment. The widespread use of fossil fuels increasesthe amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, leading toconcerns about global warming. Other sustainability indicatorsalso suggest that we now need to transform our energy systemto a more efficient, lower-carbon future. This transformationprovides many opportunities for chemical engineers to evaluateand explore other energy supply options such as renewable energyfrom solar, biomass, and geothermal resources, nonconventionalfuels from heavy oils, tar sands, natural gas hydrates, and oil shales.Developing technologies for transporting and storing thermal andelectrical energy over a range of scales are also of interest.

Further environmental distress can result from manufacturingprocesses and society's use of the manufactured products. Thetraditional response of treating process wastes is still useful, butthere is growing emphasis on designing new processes to produceless waste. This might be done by improving catalysts to decreaseunwanted by-products, finding alternatives to volatile solvents, anddeveloping more effective separation processes. Chemical engineersare at work in these areas, and in developing alternative energysources and assessing the effects of pollutants on human health.

In the department, students will find expertise in combustion,chemical reaction networks, renewable energy and upgrading ofnonconventional fuels, carbon dioxide capture and sequestration,water purification and catalytic treatment of pollutants, global airpollution modeling, design of novel energy conversion processes,energy supply chains, and many other areas of energy andenvironmental engineering. Faculty in the department are activelyinvolved in the MIT Energy Initiative.

Systems Design and Simulation. From early in the development ofchemical engineering, processes were represented as combinationsof unit operations. This concept was useful in analyzing processes,as well as providing a library of building blocks for creating newprocesses. Process and product design are imaginative activities,an artful blend of intuition and analysis. Design is aided bymathematical tools that simulate the behavior of the process orproduct and seek optimum performance. Effective use of simulationand optimization tools allows unexpected pathways to be explored,dangerous operating regions to be identified, and transient andaccident conditions to be tested. Process and product systemsengineering brings it all together, placing the technical featuresof a process or product in the context of operations, economics,and business. The end result is improved economy, reliability,

and safety. Methodologies for process and product modeling andsimulation, computer-aided engineering, operations research,optimization theory and algorithms, process and product designstrategy, treatment of uncertainty, multiscale systems engineering,and many other areas of systems engineering are being developedin the Department of Chemical Engineering. Such research leads tonew prototypes for process systems, design of new molecules withdesired properties, and processes with better operability, control,safety, and environmental performance.

School of Chemical Engineering PracticeSince 1916, the David H. Koch School of Chemical EngineeringPractice has been a major feature of the graduate education in thedepartment. In this unique program, students receive intensiveinstruction to broaden their education in the technical aspectsof the profession, and also in communication skills and humanrelations, which are frequently decisive factors in the success ofan engineering enterprise. The Practice School program stressesproblem solving in an engineering internship format, where studentsundertake projects at industrial sites under the direct supervisionof resident MIT faculty. Credit is granted for participation in thePractice School in lieu of preparing a master's thesis.

The operation of the Practice School is similar to that of a smallconsulting company. The resident staff work closely with thetechnical personnel of the host companies in identifying projectassignments with significant educational merit, and with solutionsthat make important contributions to the operation of the company.

During Practice School, students work on three or four differentprojects. Groups and designated group leaders change from oneproject to another, giving every individual an opportunity to be agroup leader at least once.

Students in the Practice School program are required to demonstrateproficiency, or take one graduate subject, in each of the followingareas: thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, applied processchemistry, kinetics and reactor design, systems engineering, andapplied mathematics.

Master of Science in Chemical EngineeringPrograms for the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering usuallyare arranged as a continuation of undergraduate professionaltraining, but at a greater level of depth and maturity. The generalrequirements for a master's program are given in the sectionon Graduate Education (http://catalog.mit.edu/mit/graduate-education). To complete the requirement of at least 66 subjectunits, of which 42 units must be graduate subjects, together with anacceptable thesis, generally takes four terms.

Master of Science in Chemical Engineering, except that 48 units ofPractice School experience replace the master's thesis.

In some cases, Bachelor of Science graduates of this departmentcan meet the requirements for the Master of Science in ChemicalEngineering Practice (Course 10-A) in two terms. Beginning inSeptember following graduation, students complete the requiredcoursework at the Institute. The spring semester is spent at thePractice School field stations. Careful planning of the senior yearschedule is important.

For students who have graduated in chemical engineering from otherinstitutions, the usual program of study for the Master of Sciencein Chemical Engineering Practice involves two terms at the Institutefollowed by field station work in the Practice School. Graduates inchemistry from other institutions normally require an additionalterm.

Doctor of Science or Doctor of PhilosophyDoctoral candidates are required to pass a written generalexamination early in their program of study. Given in January andMay, the written examination is usually taken at the end of thefirst term in residence as a graduate student. There is also an oralgeneral examination, which consists of the presentation of a thesisproposal to a faculty committee; this is normally done during thesecond year of residence. Completing a master's degree is nota prerequisite for entering the doctoral program or obtaining adoctoral degree.

The requirements for the doctoral degree include a program ofadvanced study, a minor program, a biology requirement, and athesis. The program of advanced study and research is normallycarried out in one of the fields of chemical engineering under thesupervision of one or more faculty members in the Departmentof Chemical Engineering. A thesis committee of selected facultymonitors the doctoral program of each candidate.

Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering PracticeThis degree program provides educational experience that combinesadvanced work in manufacturing, independent research, andmanagement. The program is built on the outstanding researchprograms within the department, the unique resources of the DavidH. Koch School of Chemical Engineering Practice, and the world-class resources of the Sloan School of Management. Students areprepared for a rapid launch into positions of leadership in industryand provided with a foundation for completion of an MBA degree.

The program consists of three major parts: the first year is devotedto coursework and the Practice School, the two middle years aredevoted to research, and the final year is completed in the SloanSchool of Management. In addition, an integrative project combinesthe research and management portions of the program.

Students in the PhD in Chemical Engineering Practice (PhDCEP)program must pass the department's written and oral examinations.

The progress of their research is monitored by a faculty committee,and the final thesis document is defended in a public forum. Thenormal completion time should be four calendar years for thePhDCEP program.

Computational Science and EngineeringThe Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) (http://computationalengineering.mit.edu/education) program allowsstudents to specialize at the doctoral level in a computation-relatedfield of their choice through focused coursework and a doctoralthesis through a number of participating host departments. The CSEprogram is administered jointly by the Center for ComputationalEngineering (CCE) and the host departments, with the emphasisof thesis research activities being the development of newcomputational methods and/or the innovative application ofcomputational techniques to important problems in engineeringand science. Leaders for Global OperationsThe 24-month Leaders for Global Operations (LGO) (http://lgo.mit.edu) program combines graduate degrees in engineering andmanagement for those with previous postgraduate work experienceand strong undergraduate degrees in a technical field. During thetwo-year program, students complete a six-month internship at oneof LGO's partner companies, where they conduct research that formsthe basis of a dual-degree thesis. Students finish the program withtwo MIT degrees: an MBA (or SM in management) and an SM fromone of six engineering programs, some of which have optional orrequired LGO tracks. After graduation, alumni take on leadershiproles at top global manufacturing and operations companies. 

MicrobiologyThe MIT Microbiology Graduate PhD Program (http://catalog.mit.edu/interdisciplinary/graduate-programs/microbiology)is an interdepartmental, interdisciplinary program that providesstudents broad exposure to underlying elements of modernmicrobiological research and engineering, and depth in specificareas of microbiology during the student‘s thesis work.
