    DEFINITION

A chemical hazard arises from contamination of anarea with harmful or potentially harmful chemicals.Possible sources of chemical hazards include theburning of fossils, materials and chemicals used inconstruction and industry, pollution of theenvironment and water supply, chemical spillages, industrial accidents, and the deliberate release oftoxic materials.

    HEALTH EFFECTS

There are a variety of chemicals that are commonlyused in industry. Industrial chemicals can bedescribed in a number of ways, for example by theireffect on the worker (whether the chemical iscorrosive or causes dermatitis, etc.), or by thephysical form of the chemical (that is, whether it is adust, fume, vapour, gas, etc.).

    EFFECT CHEMICAL WASTE

Many employers are not aware of the hazards associatedwith toxic chemicals and often do not know how todispose of chemical wastes safely. (Employers also needto be educated about chemical hazards.) As a result, these employers often simply dump waste chemicalsinto the environment. Convenient dumping grounds arethe ocean, rivers, lakes, fields, roadsides, etc.Sometimes these dumping grounds are right in thecommunity where you and your family live and work.Toxic chemicals which are improperly disposed of mayeventually end up in your drinking water, in the placeswhere your children play, in the soil where your food isgrown, etc.
