Ed., S.S. Zumdahl and D.J. DeCosteSyllabus/Lab Manual: Chemistry 101
Syllabus and Lab Book, Fall 2013iClicker: This can be purchased in the
bookstore.Calculator: A simple calculator that
performs scientific notation (graphing calculators are also okay).
Materials
Safety Goggles and Lab Apron: These can be purchased in the bookstore.
Lab Notebook: Any notebook will work for the lab.
Usage Fee Card: This can be purchased at the Illini Union Bookstore.
Lectures
• Provide a “big picture”–How do we think about “science”?–How do we solve a problem?
• Interactive–I expect and encourage questions.–Participation expected through
clickers.
Lab Sections• Meet tomorrow!• Bring your textbook, Lab Book,
Usage Fee Card, and calculator.
Lab Sections• Lab write-ups must consist
of coherent explanations and complete sentences.
• This is another chance for discussion of chemical principles.
Friday Sections
• Smaller groups, more details in solving problems.
• You must take an active role.
• Textbook homework due (in Lab Book, p.10)
Electronic Homework
• Can access from course website:www.chem.illinois.edu
Click on “Course Web Sites” link on the left
• 1st HW due Tuesday 9/3, 7:00 pm
• Type 1 HW – “unlimited” attempts (99)
• Type 2 HW – 5 attempts
Due Dates
• Lab write-ups: generally due the Friday after lab within the first 5 minutes of discussion (see the Lab Manual)
• Textbook homework: Friday in discussion (TA will assign problems)
• Electronic Homework: Type 1- Mondays; Type 2- Wednesdays (but check the course website!)
• No late work is accepted!!!
Exams• Evening exams (7-8:15 pm).
Dates given in the Lab Book.• Multiple choice and free
response.• Emphasis on understanding.• Previous exams given in the
Lab Book.
Some Advice• Read the text. Not like a novel,
but deeply and critically.
• Be careful of the Complete Solutions Manual.
• 212 Chemistry Annex.
