South Salt Lake is called “City of Industry” because of our central location. We have a natural ad-vantage as an employment and economic hub for the entire valley. We have unlimited opportunities, and a hard working population. We are known as a place where people “get their start” - buy a first home, start a business, or move here from another city or country. This month’s newsletter focuses on how South Salt Lake residents and businesses are achieving these goals.

Even with opportunities all around us, our community still struggles with unemployment and underemployment. We are working to ad-dress this challenge. One of the three promises of our Promise South Salt Lake initiative is that “Everyone has the opportunity to be healthy and to prosper.” We are working to build a “Neighbor-hood Workforce Pipeline” through which everyone in our com-

munity can access education and/or training for employment. Ide-ally, we want residents to be able to work in local businesses, buy goods and services at local stores, and invest in locally owned businesses in order to build up our community from within. Many of our Economic Development efforts are targeted at attracting a wide variety of jobs from entry level to executive level. Many of our Promise South Salt Lake educational efforts target preparing youth and adults for these jobs.

Thank you to the South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce and its Board of Directors for their enthusiastic efforts over the past two years to strengthen our community. They have created new networking and learning opportunities and have stepped up efforts to share important news about changes in South Salt Lake with lo-cal businesses. They are also a partner in the Promise South Salt Lake Jobs and Economic Development Initiative (JEDI), which involves a number of local employers, higher education repre-sentatives, and economic development experts. Promise South Salt Lake Jobs and Economic Development Initiative (JEDI) Promotes South Salt Lake Workforce

For years South Salt Lake has been known as the “Center of Industry” because two-thirds of the city is zoned commercial or light in-dustrial. The city is home to approximately 2,000 businesses that provide around 40,000 jobs.

As part of Mayor Wood’s Promise South Salt Lake initiative, the city has created the Promise South Salt Lake Jobs and Economic De-velopment Initiative (JEDI). The initiative partners with businesses to create better access to employment opportunities. The Promise South Salt Lake Jobs and Economic Development Initiative is made up of business owners, educators, non-profits, the South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, and representatives from Utah Department of Workforce Services.

Over the next few months JEDI will be working to communicate available job, career, and skill building opportunities in the city in order to advance the South Salt Lake workforce.

Owning a home is the most significant and reliable source of asset building for most households. But, families face a number of hurdles to home owner-ship. Community Development Corporation of Utah (CDCU) is a non-profit organization committed to helping Utah families overcome obstacles in order to become successful homeowners.

CDCU is excited to offer a mortgage loan product that is an affordable alternative to other available options. CDCU’s new HomeFit Loan is a mortgage with a 2% down payment requirement. Home buyers who receive the HomeFit Loan also benefit from the support of CDCU’s award-winning housing counseling team throughout the home purchase process.

Down payment assistance may be available for qualified home buyers in South Salt Lake. CDCU also offers real estate agent representation. Call CDCU at 801.994.7222 to learn more about the HomeFit Loan.

South Salt Lake Local Employment SurveyIn order to understand hiring trends in the city, the Promise South Salt Lake Jobs and Economic Development Initiative is surveying local businesses about educational requirements, workforce demographics, and hiring qualified employees.

Approximately 70 businesses have responded to a written survey. The results from this survey sample include:

• 54% of businesses have between one and ten employees. • The top two issues businesses face when finding employees

are locating those who are qualified and dependable. • 46% of the businesses surveyed require at least a high school

or equivalent degree, 18% require technical training, and 25% percent require some college or a bachelor’s degree.

• 33% of employees are over age 50; 29% are women, and 25% are minorities. Note: This is a non-statistical survey.

Wasatch Steel - Lynn Hurst

Lynn Hurst joined Wasatch Steel in 1979 as an outside salesman when it was just a scrap metal recycling yard. In 1981, he took over management of the com-pany, which is now a complete and professional steel market.

He said the vision of the company is service. “Our commitment of friendly service and attention to the needs of our retail customers has not changed,” Lynn said.

The company has grown every year since it began, and Lynn said its central location on 3300 South in South Salt Lake plays a large role in its success. “No other place in the Salt Lake Valley has what South Salt Lake has in terms of location.”

Wasatch Steel is located at 243 West 3300 South.Call 801.486.4463 for more information.

American Funds & Trusts, Inc. - Rick & Dick Taggart

In 1958, American Funds & Trusts, Inc., a financial advisory firm that specializes in mutual funds and retirement planning, opened their doors in South Salt Lake. The founders were Dick Taggart and Claude Sherwin. They wanted their office in an accessible area where clients could drive up to the front door and walk in. “South Salt Lake was the perfect location,” Dick said.

Rick Taggart, Dick’s son, joined the firm as a Financial Advisor in 1998 and has served as Vice President for the past 10 years.

They are proud of their 56 year history in South Salt Lake and have been strong supporters of the local police and fire depart-ment. They attribute their longevity to careful planning, location, and their conservative financial advice. They said they love not only their clients, but also the businesses and residents of South Salt Lake.

American Funds & Trusts, Inc. is located at 3030 S Main St # 100.Call 801.466.8701 for more information.

Zaika Grill N’Kebab - Saqiba and Amir Mahmood

Saqiba and Amir Mahmood started Zaika Grill N’Kebab just 18 months ago, and their success, they said, comes from cooking every recipe with love. “We need it to be fresh,” Amir said. “Small things make a big difference.”

The couple moved from Pakistan to Salt Lake in 2004. Their restaurant features authentic Pakistani cuisine with a touch of Kashmir, a rarity among restaurants in the Intermountain West. If you want this type of food, Saqiba said, “Either you have to import a cook or your parents have to be the right cooks.”

They give South Salt Lake a thumbs up for its support to their business, and they welcome customers from near and far. They participated in South Salt Lake Res-taurant Week again this year to introduce the whole valley to their cuisine. They said their motivation at work is a smile on their customers’ faces and three simple words—“we’re coming back.”

Zaika Grill N’Kebab is located at 3540 S State Street.Call 801.268.1658 for more information.

The Salt Lake Culinary Center - Diane & Rich Sheya

The Salt Lake Culinary Center offers classes for the home cook and also hosts events for groups of 12 up to 120 people. With three huge communal kitchens, it has plenty of space for each student to practice their technique in class and makes everyone feel at home in the kitchen of their dreams at special events.

Diane Sheya, co-owner with her husband Rich, has been a culinary instruc-tor for over twenty years. She was one of the original chefs at the Viking Cooking School, and decided to purchase the business and rename it last year.

Diane is active in the South Salt Lake Chamber and the Women in Business Committee, and frequently organizes and hosts events for many businesses in South Salt Lake and across the valley. “We like being in South Salt Lake - we are in the middle of everything,” Diane said.

The Salt Lake Culinary Center is located at 2233 South 300 East.Call 801.464.0113 for more information.

There are no agendas or speeches, just the opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns, and the chance to get to know the officers in our neighborhoods.

“Coffee with a Cop” creates an opportunity for our officers and community members to become acquainted, and to remove barriers that often make us appear unapproachable,” said South Salt Lake Police Chief Jack Carruth.

Happy Halloween from South Salt LakeAnimal Services

South Salt Lake Animal Services would like everyone to have a fun and safe Halloween. Here are a

few reminders and safety tips for animals.

• Chocolate can be very toxic to animals. Keep all candy and goodies out of your pet's reach.

• Dogs and cats don’t understand

what Halloween is and may become frightened. There are a lot of strangers and costumed people walking around and coming to the door. Make sure that your pets are in a secure place so they won’t get injured or injure (or even bite) someone.

• If you like to take your dog out Trick-or-Treating with you, make sure that he is on a leash and has reflective gear on, like a collar and vest.

Most of all remember to have fun and be safe!

South Salt Lake Rotary Club: End Polio Now CampaignIn 1985, Rotary International, the largest service club in the world, set the goal of eradicating polio. The World Health Organization, U. S. Center of Disease Control & Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Malinda Gates Founda-tion, and other partners have joined the effort to immunize the children of the world against polio.

Since then worldwide polio cases have dropped by more than 99%, but the fight it not over yet. Rotarians are very close to gathering the resources to finish the job. Since 1988 Rotary has raised more than $1 billion for polio eradication.

During 2014 the Rotary Clubs in Utah District 5420 are participating in the End Polio Now campaign. Governor Gary Herbert has declared the week of October 19-26 as "End Polio Now Week." On Saturday, October 25, 2014, there will be a wrap-up celebration in Liberty Park including a Zombie Walk/Run, a barbeque, and a concert.

Join the South Salt Lake Rotary Club and help make polio a disease of the past. For more information or to make a donation, contact Tom King at 801.580.9628 or [email protected]

Obituary: Mark Christiansen1944 - 2014

Mark Christiansen passed away peacefully in his home on September 11, 2014 surrounded by his children. Mark lived 54 of his 70 years as a quadriplegic, and he was born to Rolf and Irene Kleven Christiansen on July 18, 1944 in Salt Lake City and lived there his entire life.

When Mark was 16, he was in a diving accident and was immediately paralyzed from the neck down. He miraculously survived and outlived his life expectancy by decades. Despite being in a wheelchair, his life was full of outstanding accomplishments. He graduated from Granite High School and worked in many business capacities, including real estate and insurance. He also owned his own stock bro-kerage. Mark spent the last 24 years serving on the Board of Directors for the Utah Independent Living Center.

Mark’s greatest joy came from his family. He married, and fathered three children: Nathan, Marni and Kara. They, along with his brother, Renn, created cherished memories from a life filled with adventure. He loved to travel, especially to Lake Powell and to see his loved ones in Norway. He loved sports and was an avid fan of the Utes and the Jazz. Despite his physical limitations he enjoyed adaptive snow skiing and paragliding; but most of all, loved to work out with his friends at Neuroworx.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to neuroworx.org or uilc.org in Mark's memory.
