I am a mathematician,andassuchIamnotusedtowritingintherstpersonsingular. ButifIwantthestorytold, Ihavetotell itmyself. Almosteverybodyinthisstoryisdead, mostlongdead.When my picture appeared in the chess magazine, I was about to graduate fromgrade12. TheteamIplayedfor,Tipograa(Typography),justwontheBudapestchampionship. The leader of our team was asked to write an article for the magazineabout our team, so he asked us to look over the games we played in this tournament,andlookforpositionsinwhichwewereclever,sohecanwritethemup.Itwas a big chore to lookoverthe thirtyorso games. The resultwas extremelydisappointing. EventhoughI rated85%, everywinwas duetoanerror of theopponents. IdecidedthatthetimeIspendonchesswouldbemoresatisfyingifIcreated chess problemsthese are absolute and not illusory, not dependent on youropponentsignoranceandpsychology.Dr. Jeno Ban (19191979), one of the chess masters at the chess club, introducedus tochess compositions, especiallyendgames (whiteplays andwins or draws).I guredthat ifI compose endgames,andI state that white wins (or draws),theseoughttobeabsolute, andnotdependentonmistakesbytheopponent. Istartedstudying endgames; youhave to be familiar withthousands of themto createoriginalones.MysecondmentorwasGyorgyParos(19101975). Unquestionablytheworldleadingchesscomposerinhelpmates.1Hetaughtmehowtoaimatunclutteredpositions,fewpieces,andelegantideas.Paros told me the story of one of his most famous compositions; how he struggledwiththeideaforyears,andhowhewokeuponemorningandsetupthepositionon his chess board. And that is why I quit after about two years. The subconsciousworknecessaryfor success inchess compositions competedagainst thesameformathematicalresearch,andIhadtogiveoneofthemup.I look back at this period, 195456, with great satisfaction.
