Officials from GeaugaCounty’s five chambers ofcommerce and business leaderscalled Wednesday’s ConsumerConnection a huge success.

For the first time this year,the chambers’ members openedthe doors of their annual after-hours networking expo to thepublic as a way to makeresidents aware of local goodsand services available to themas well as encourage them topatronize Geauga Countybusinesses.

Thursday’s event, from 4-7:30 p.m. at the Burton branchof Kent State University,attracted an estimated 400people who squeezed up anddown aisles of booths offeringfree samples of foods, displaysof products, free items andadvice about services availableto them.

The displays spilled into thelibrary and TV lounge, whileworkshops were held in aclassroom on topics such asgardening, home technologyand dog training.

An adjacent gallery held aChinese auction of productsdonated by the businesses,including fireplace equipment,an electronic toothbrush, aKindle and gift certificates.

Businesses from throughoutthe county and beyond wererepresented, including Geothe-rmal Professionals of BainbridgeTownship, We’ll RememberCreative Gift Service of RussellTownship and ChesterlandFamily Dental Care.

Expo chairman Brian Brock-way of the Burton Chamber ofCommerce said he was verypleased with the turnout.

“It’s been pretty crowdedthe whole time,” Brockway said.“I’m very happy with it, since itis the first year we’ve gone inthis direction. The vendors arehappy because they’ve seen alot of activity and interest.”

“It’s an excellent crowd,”said Geauga County Commissi-oner Tracy Jemison, who wasattending the event with countyAdministrator David Lair.

“Everybody seems happy,

people are asking a lot ofquestions of the businessowners and there certainly are alot of vendors,” Jemison said.

“It’s definitely drawing a bigcrowd,” said Colleen Lockhart,who was manning the GeaugaSafety Council’s booth.

“I’m here to promote the

safety council to the businessesin Geauga County,” she said.

Lockhart’s nonprofit organ-ization, co-sponsored by the OhioBureau of Worker’s Compensa-tion and the Middlefield Chamberof Commerce, offers education onsafety and health topics.

West Geauga Schools Boardof Education pulled in roughly15 to 20 residents Monday nightfor its special community inputmeeting to help steer the shipon its superintendent search.

Board President Bill Beersrequested all audience memberssubmit index cards listingcharacteristics they desire in thenext superintendent, saidTreasurer Michele Tullai.

“Geauga County Educati-onal Service Center Superin-tendent Matt Galemmo wasalso there,” Tullai said. “He’shelping (the board). He’s also aresident of the West Geaugadistrict. He’s going to help gothrough the applications whenthey come in.”

The current superintendent,Tom Diringer, announced hisresignation April 9 after servingtwo years of his three-yearcontract, which pays $110,000annually.

He replaced longtime Super-intendent Tony Podojil in 2010.

Since then, the school boardhas decided to take the reins —with the help of Galemmo —on the search, rather than gothrough the Ohio SchoolBoards Association as they didlast time.

Part of this new approachincludes outreach to thecommunity to glean as muchinput as possible, Beers said.

“We’ve heard from thecommunity survey done inJanuary, people want to hearmore from the board and moreinput, so we felt it wasimportant to have this kind ofmeeting to give the communitythat kind of opportunity,” hesaid. “I thought (the meeting)went OK. We didn’t know whatkind of turn out we would get.We appreciate the communityexpressing their desires andconcerns as we begin oursuperintendent search. ”

The public can also provideinput via the school website up

until the deadline for super-intendent applications, which isMay 25, Beers said.

“We are trying to get inputin multiple ways in addition tothe community meeting,” hesaid. “And we’ve gotten peopleresponding (on the site) evenbefore the communitymeeting.”

Beers said board membersalso attended the ChesterlandRotary Senior Dinner Wedn-esday night and gave those inattendance an opportunity toprovide feedback as well.

“We got a lot of the sametype of thing from them as well,” he said, referring to

With only two MunsonTownship trustees fully on boardwith Plan A — which hadestimated costs higher thanexpected — for the town hallredesign, Architect Henry“Hank” Penttila literally wentback to the drawing board.

Last Tuesday, Penttilareceived unanimous approvalfrom trustees to proceed withPlan C following an explanationof how and why his most recentdrawing has the new spaceadded onto the southwest sideof the existing town hall shell.

On April 24, Penttilapresented trustees with a modeland an estimated price tag of$1,328,910.

Their reaction led him toreview the costs and logistics ofPlan A, in which he planned toremove walls to enlarge theexisting community room andcreate a welcoming lobby.

Besides concerns fromtrustees, Penttila said Tuesdayhe’d had further conversationwith his structural engineer.

“That conversation …caused me to revisit the projectentirely,” he said. “The walls ofthis building are not structurallycapable of supporting thestructural loads required forexpansion.”

The best approach is toleave the shell of the town hallintact and work within it torenovate the spaces, he said.

“The less we impose changeson this building, the better offwe’ll be,” he said. “Structurally,it is adequate for what it does.”

He presented a drawing ofPlan C, which has the currenttown hall and community roomreconfigured as office space andan enlargement of the currentmeeting room.

In Plan C, the lobby wouldbe built onto the west side ofthe south wall of the mainbuilding and connect to thecommunity room on the lobby’ssouthwest corner.

Financially, Penttila said theplan will be better.

Although he didn’t havedollars attached to the newconstruction, he said the high-

At the community meeting,Beers shared the characteristicspeople sent in and put them upon a screen to discuss.

“Community involvementwas a big one,” Tullai said. “Andintegrity, leadership, a businesssense, transparency ... to knowthe culture of the community.”

The board also discussedhow the previous superin-tendent search was handled andthe process the board will use to

investigate the current candi-dates, which will be slightlymore flexible.

“It’s different. When OSBAdid the search, they gave theboard specific questions to ask,so the board asked the samequestions to each candidate inthe first round,” Tullaiexplained. “Whereas this time,the board will not necessarilystick specifically to thosequestions, like if one questionsleads to something else theythink is important, they caninterject that question. Thetechnique used will be a littledifferent.”

The board also askedresidents how they felt aboutthe superintendent living in theschool district.

“I kind of got the feelingthat people didn’t feel it wasnecessary that they live in theWest Geauga (district), but in

order to be able to participatein events, you’d want to beclose,” Tullai said.

Beers said communityinvolvement came throughreally loudly.

“I would say that one stoodout,” he said. “I’m in the processof tabulating and characterizing(the cards) to see which thingsreally stand out. We read themaloud to everybody ... you keephearing recurring themes.”

Beers is receiving all theapplications, Tullai said, addingthose will go to the GeaugaCounty Education ServiceCenter.

“(Galemmo) will go throughthem. He will know what theboard is looking for as far aspriorities,” she said. “They'll bedivided out by that and then theboard will choose who theywant to interview in the firstround.”

The Chow Down booth wasvery busy as representativesgave out bacon wrapped datesas well as the meatballs.

The food booths appearedto be the most popular aspeople sampled brownies fromKaufman’s Catering, minisandwiches from Rise and Dineand chocolate covered pretzelsfrom White House Chocolates.

“I like this show very much,”Fisher said. “It’s a goodopportunity to go around andsee what’s offered here. It givesus a good idea of where we canfind things and get ideas aboutthings we’d like to do.”

Further down the aisle,Geauga Tourism CouncilDirector Lynda Nemeth gaveout Geauga County triviaquizzes.

“I love to do these localshows and watch the interestingpeople,” Nemeth said. “We giveout this quiz because it’s fun tosee how well people knowGeauga County. They thinkthey do, but this shows themmaybe they don’t know as muchas they think they know.”

Tom Sulzer, owner of Sulco

Chimneys of Chester Township,said this was his first local show.

“I didn’t know what toexpect, but the crowds are goodand I’m getting goodresponses,” Sulzer said as heplaced a donation on theChinese Auction table.

To 9-year-old Wes Smith, theexpo gave him a chance to helppromote his mother’s business,First Light Home Care inChardon.

“I get to pass stuff out,” Wessaid. “It’s fun to meet peopleand help my mom.”

Wes also made the rounds ofthe booths, asking questions

about geothermal heating andpicking up a few freebies.

Later, he took home one offive door prizes — baskets ofproducts worth at least $100that were donated by eachsponsoring chamber ofcommerce.

“This is great,” Wes said,grinning proudly as he struggledto carry the huge basket.

Brockway said the vendorswere pleased with the event andthe enthusiasm that residentsshowed toward what they hadto offer.

“We’re definitely going to dothis again next year,” he said.

Besides saving money, PlanC has very good logistics ofoperation, Penttila said.

The community section of thefacility can be kept entirelyseparate from offices and a seriesof doors connects the meetingroom to the lobby, where newrestrooms are planned.

A caucus or small meetingroom is still part of the plan.

Because there will be lessdemolition in the office area,the staff will be able to continueworking without the necessityof moving to another locationsuch as a trailer, Penttila said.

Also, the footprint of theproposed addition isn’t thatdifferent from Plan A, so thesite plan can stay the same, headded.

“My structural engineer said‘Our headaches are over,’”Penttila said.

Improvements to the currentbuilding to improve energyefficiency could include wallsframed on the inside of theconcrete block allowing spacefor wiring and insulation.

Windows will be replaced,Penttila said, adding high-efficiency lighting will beinstalled.

Visitors will still enter thebuilding from the south, as inPlan A.

From the lobby, they will bedirected to the communityroom on the left, offices andmeeting room straight ahead orto new restrooms to the right,according to the plan blueprint.

The community roomsection includes the kitchen anda large storage space for chairsand tables.

The standing seam steel roofwill have a 6/12 pitch, so it willmatch the rest of the structure,Penttila said, adding the ceilingin the community room will betwo feet higher than in thecurrent structure.

The new construction willactually save the townshipmoney and add about 200square feet compared to Plan A,

bringing the total to 8,810square feet, he said,

“This is still much, much lessexpensive,” Penttila said. “I’mvery happy with it. I’m anxiousto move ahead with it.”

Specifically, the architectsaid he is more optimistic aboutthe budget, the constructionschedule and the quality ofbuilding for the amount ofmoney the trustees want tospend.

The current communityroom will be redesigned intooffice space, a part of theproject that can be done with

minimal disturbance to the staff,Penttila said, adding it notrequire them to relocate duringconstruction.

Not having to demolishwalls and modify the structurewill create a significant savings,he said.

Trustees were in favor of thegeneral plan and discussed avariety of possible alterations.The architect urged them totake time to review thedrawings and discuss changes.

“It’s all on paper —anything can change. And ithas,” Penttila said.

Rainbow trout will bestocked at Punderson Lake inGeauga County on May 10.

These are surplus “catchable-sized” fish resulting from theannual statewide springstocking efforts.

Approximately 2,000 troutranging from 10 to 13 inches orabout a pound each will bestocked between 11 a.m. andnoon at the state parkcampground.

Fishing at Punderson Lake isopen to people of all ages.

The daily bag limit is fivetrout per angler with no sizelimits.

CASA volunteers quietlycontribute countless hours forthe protection of children invulnerable situations. Sincethese guardian services are

provided at no cost to thecounty for the guardian's times,Geauga County taxpayers savemore than $300,000 per year.

Even more importantly, thepositive contributions thatCASA guardians make for thewelfare of the children theyprotect in Geauga County arepriceless.

The recognition of theGeauga County CASA forKIDS program and its selflessvolunteer guardians by theAmerican Red Cross is welldeserved.

The Chester Township Trustees will be accepting employment applicationsuntil May 21, 2012 for a seasonal Road Worker Position.

Applications may be picked up and submitted at the Chester Township Offices located at12701 Chillicothe Road between the hours of 9:00am and 4:00pm Monday through Friday.

This employee will work with the road crew and under the direction of the Road Superinten-dent. Some knowledge of construction practices and the use of hand and power tools arepreferred. Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years and have a valid State of Ohio driver’slicense. A pre-employment drug screen and physical will be required prior to employment.

This position does not provide the employee with any benefits, and the wage will be $11.00per hour. The employment frame of this seasonal position is May end until September end.
