CHICKENS AND EGGS: Production, Disposition, Cash Receipts, Gross Income

COMMERCIAL BROILERS: Production, Gross Income

Revised Estimates, by States, 1960-64

Revised estimates of farm production, disposition, and income fr'om chickens and eggs are presented in this report for 1960-64. These estimates continue the official series on production, disposition, cash receipts, and gross income, as shown in "Farm Production, Disposition and Income from Chickens and Eggs, 1909-44"; 1 I ''Farm Production, Disposition, and Income from Chickens and Eggs, 1945-49''; 21 "Chickens and Eggs, Farm Production, Disposition, Cash Receipts, and Gro;s Income, 1950-54 11 ; il ''Chickens and Eggs, Farm Production, Disposition, Cash Receipts, and Gross Income; Cornmercial Broilers, Production and Gross Income, 1955-59. 11 i_/

This report is one of a series on agricultural products presenting revised estimates of production, disposition, cash receipts, and gross income for the years 1960-64. These revisions resulted from a review and analysis of the 1964 Census of Agriculture covering poultry numbers and other data relating to the production and disposition of chickens. Estimates of numbers on hand January 1 are revised every 5 years to reflect the changes indicated by census enumerations and all other data available. When revisions are made for the inventory numbers, corresponding adjustments are usually necessary in other items, since production estimates take into account the difference in inventory numbers and weights at the beginning and end of the year as well as pounds sold during the year.

An explanation of the various items included in this report, together with a description of the source of the information and the methods employed in determining the estimates, is set forth below. Data in the following tables cover farm and commercial operations but exclude commercial broilers, except in tables 14, 1 5, 16 and 1 7.

On Hand January 1: Inventory numbers on hand at the beginning and end of the year are the official estimates of the Crop Reporting Board as published in February each year. The level of these estimated is based on the January 1 equivalent of the Census enumerations every 5 years. In the intervening years. estimates are based on voluntary returns from producers. State records of chickens assessed each year and annual farm census enumerations in some States are also used as indications o£ the yearly change in numbers. Revised estimates o£ inventory numbers. by classes and value. are published in USDA Statistical Bulletin No. 389. Statistical Reporting Service, February 1967.

Death Loss of Layers: The annual death loss of chickens on hand at the beginning of the year is estimated from quarterly returns from crop reporters showing the number of layers per flock which died during the preceding month. The annual percentage death loss, computed from these quarterly returns, is applied to numbers of chickens on hand at the beginning of the year to get the total number which died during the year.

Chickens Raised: The estimates of numbers of chickens raised are based primarily on the number of egg-type chicks produced by commercial hatcheries and the proportions o£ these bought (excluding cockerels destroyed) for poultry production and on assessors 1 enumerations where available. Another indication of chickens raised is the relation o£ numbers of young chickens on hand in sample flocks on June 1 (plus prior disposals and later hatchings) to inventory numbers o£ layers on hand June 1, multiplied by the estimated number of June layers.

Chickens Produced: The estimate o£ the number produced is the net annual farm production of chickens. equivalent to the number raised during the year less death loss of chickens that were on hand at the beginning of the year. Young chickens of the current year1s hatchings that die are not included in the number o£ chickens raised. The number produced also equals the number sold, plus those consumed on farms, plus or minus the change in inventory. The estimate of pounds produced (live weight) represents the pounds of chickens sold, plus the pounds consumed on producing farms, plus or minus the change in inventory live weight during the year.

Eggs Produced: Annual egg production is the sum of the production in the 12 months. Estimates of monthly egg production and rate of lay are based on returns £rom producers who report for the first day o£ each month the number of layers on hand and the number of eggs produced "yesterday." The number of layers on farms January 1 serves as the starting point for the monthly estimates of layers. The change in numbers from month to month is estimated from the changes shown by reports from these sample farms. From the computed rate of lay per bird at the beginning and end o£ the month,

the monthly production per layer is derived. Total monthly egg production is obtained by multiplying the average number of layers by the monthly egg production per layer. Revised estimate of the number of layers and rate of lay are published in USDA Statistical Bulletin No. 3 91 ~ Statistical Reporting Service~ February 1967.

Home Consumption of Chickens and Eggs: The annual home consumption of chickens and eggs is estimated from quarterly returns from crop reporters, showing the consumption in the household on farms where produced.

Sales of Chickens and Eggs: Sales of chickens and eggs are computed by subtracting farm utilization from estimated production. These estimates of chickens sold are checked so far as possible against the available data of commercial slaughter of mature chickens.

Commercial Broilers: Commercial broilers include all young chickens of the heavy or crossbreeds raised for meat from which pullets as well as cockerels are sold as broilers. Commercial broiler production is not included in the estimated production of farm chickens.

Prices: The average annual prices per pound of chickens and broilers and and per dozen of eggs sold are computed from the monthly prices received by farmers weighted by the estimated quantities sold each month. Prices of eggs are for all egg sales from farms, including hatching eggs and eggs sold at retail by farmers.

Income: Cash receipts for marketings of farm chickens are computed by multiplying the pounds of chickens sold by the average price per pound. Cash receipts from marketings of eggs are derived by multiplying the dozens of eggs sold by the annual average price per dozen. Gross income from farm chickens is the total of cash receipts plus the value of chickens consumed in farm households. Gross income from eggs is the total of cash receipts plus the value of eggs consumed in farm households.

Gross income from commercial broilers is derived by multiplying the pounds produced by the price per pound. It includes consumption in households of broiler producers, which is less than 1 percent of the total production for the United States.
