The Four Questions Why is this night different from all other nights of the year?

מה נשתנה הלילה הזה מכל הלילות

Ma nishtana halailah hazeh mikol halaylot?

On all other nights we eat all kinds of bread and crackers. Why do we eat only matzah on Passover?

שבכל הלילות אנו אוכלין חמץ ומצה. הלילה הזה כולו מצה.

Shebechol halailot anu ochlin chametz u’matzah. Halailah hazeh kulo matzah?

On all other nights we eat many kinds of vegetables and herbs.. Why do we eat bitter herbs, maror?

שבכל הלילות אנו אוכלין שאר ירקות. הלילה הזה מרור

Shebechol halailot anu ochlin she’or yerakot. Halailah hazeh maror?

On all other nights we don’t usually dip one food into another. We dip parsley in salt water and the bitter herbs in charoset. Why do we dip twice tonight?

שבכל הלילות אין אנו מטבילין אפילו פעם אחת הלילה הזה שתי פעמים.

Shebechol halaylot ayn anu matbilin afilu pa’am echad. Halailah hazeh sh’tay f’amim?

On all other nights we eat sitting up straight. Why do we lean on a pillow to-night?

שבכל הלילות אנו אוכלין בין יושבין ובין מסובין. הלילה הזה כולנו מסובין.

Shebechol halaylot anu ochlin bayn yoshvin u’vayn m’subin. Halailah hazeh kulanu m’subin?

The Passover Story A long time ago in the land of Egypt lived a mean king named Pharaoh. Pharaoh was unkind to the Jewish people and he told them they must work very hard building cities and palaces. The Jewish people were slaves.

Building Cities

Bang, bang, bang, Hold your hammer low.

Bang, bang , bang, give a heavy blow.

For it’s work, work, work, Every day and every night.

For it’s work, work, work, when it’s dark and when it’s light.

Dig, dig, dig, get your shovel deep. Dig , dig, dig, there ’s no time to sleep.

For it’s work, work, work, Every day and every night.

For it’s work, work, work, when it’s dark and when it’s light.

Pharaoh was mean to the Jewish children. One Jewish Mom named Yochevet decided she would not let Pharaoh be mean to her new baby. She put her new baby in a basket and floated him down the Nile River with his big sister Miriam watching. He was found by Pharaoh’s daughter, the princess. She took him home to raise him as her own. She named him Moses because Moses means “brought him out of the water”.

Where is Baby Moses?

Where is baby Moses, Moses, Moses? Where is Baby Moses? In the River Nile.

He’s floating in a basket, a basket, a basket. He’s floating in a basket in the River Nile.

The princess she was swimming, swimming, swimming,

The princess she was swimming in the River Nile.

She found the baby Moses, Moses, Moses,

She found the baby Moses in the River Nile.

Moses grew up living in the castle as Pharaoh’s son. He did not like how Pharaoh was treating the Jewish people. One day he took a walk with his sheep and found a burning bush. Out of the burning bush came the voice of God. God said, “Moses, you are Jewish….. go back to Egypt to free the Jewish people and tell Pharaoh to stop being so mean and to let the Jewish people go!”

Oh Listen!!!

Oh listen, Oh listen, Oh listen King Pharaoh.

Oh listen, oh listen, please let my people go.

They want to go away. They work too hard all day.

King Pharaoh, King Pharaoh, What do you say?

No, No, No, I will not let them go.

No, No, No, I will not let them go.

Let My People Go!

When Israel was in Egypt’s land, Let my people go.

Oppressed so hard they could not stand, Let my people go.

Go down Moses, way down to Egypt’s land.

Tell old Pharaoh , Tell old Pharaoh, Let my people go!

The Plagues God was angry with Pharaoh and punished him with ten punishments .

1. Blood דם

2. Frogs צפרדע

3. Lice כינים

4. Wild animals ערוב

5. Cattle plague דבר

6. Boils שחין

7. Hail ברד

8. Locusts ארבה

9. Darkness חשך

10. Hurting the first born

מכת בכורות

One Morning

One morning when Pharaoh awoke in his bed,

There were frogs in his bed and frogs on his head,

Frogs on his nose and frogs on his toes,

Frogs here, frogs there,

Frogs were jumping everywhere!!

Page 10: Children s Passover Seder · 2020. 4. 8. · Dayenu. Ilu natan, natan lanu, Natan lanu et ha Torah, Natan lanu et ha Torah, Dayenu. Matzah

After the punishments, Pharaoh told Moses to take the Jewish peo-ple out of Egypt. The people got ready very quickly. They did not have time to bake bread for their journey. Instead, they put the raw dough on their backs and the hot dessert sun baked it into hard crackers called matzah.

Hand in Hand

We’re walking, walking , walking hand in hand.

We’re walking, walking to the promised land.

To the land, to the land, to the land where we are free.

To the land to the land of hope for you and me!

Verse 2: marching

Verse 3: stomping

Verse 4: hopping

The Jewish people followed Moses. When they got to the sea, Mo-ses held up his walking stick and the sea divided. The Jewish peo-ple walked across on dry land and came to a desert. When Phar-aoh’s army tried to catch the Jewish people, the water shut and the Jewish people were saved!

We Were Slaves

We were slaves, but now we are free.

We were slaves, but now we are free.

We’re free, we’re free, we’re free, now we are free.

We’re free, we’re free, we’re free, now we are free.

Matzah מצה

Before we eat matzah, we break the middle piece and put half of it away for dessert. This piece is called the Afikomen. We hide it safe for a prize. Before we eat the matzah we say a blessing:

Baruch ata adonai elohenu melech haolam hamotzi leachem min haaretz

Parsley (Karpas) כרפס

We dip a piece of parsley into the salt water. Be-fore we eat, we say a blessing:

Baruch ata adonai elohenu melech haolam borey p’ri haadamah.

Maror מרור

We dip the maror (bitter herb( in the charoset. Before we eat, we say a blessing:

Baruch ata adonai elohenu melech haolam asher kidshanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu al achilat maror.

The Egg and the Bone ביצה וזרוע

The egg is another reminder of spring. The bone recalls the first celebration of Passover when the Jewish people roasted a lamb and ate it with matzah.

Cup of Elijah

There is an extra cup of wine on our seder table. This is called the Cup of Elijah. There is a story that Elijah, a great teacher who lived many years ago visits every Seder to wish everyone a year of peace and freedom. Every year we open the door and invite Elijah to come in. We watch his cup carefully to see if any of the wine dis-appear as we sing this song:

Eliahu Hanavi

Eliahu hanavi,

Eliahu hatishbi,

Eliahu, Eliahu

Eliahu hagiladi.

Page 14: Children s Passover Seder · 2020. 4. 8. · Dayenu. Ilu natan, natan lanu, Natan lanu et ha Torah, Natan lanu et ha Torah, Dayenu. Matzah

We end our seder with a song of hope for the Jewish people.

Am Yisrael Chai

Am Yisrael, Am Yisrael, Am Yisrael chai

Am Yisrael, Am Yisrael, Am Yisrael chai

Od avinu chai, Od avinu chai.

Od avinu, od avinu, od avinu chai.

Happy Passover! חג פסח שמח!
