IntroductionChina National Engineering Research Center of Juncao Technology was formed and inaugurated in December 2011 as approved by the Chinese Government Ministry of Science and Technology, on the basis of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University (FAFU). The Center, under the guidance of the Management Committee composed of the relevant official and technical personages from the Fujian Provincial Science and Technology Commission and FAFU , is supervised by a Chief Director who assumes the responsibility of routine management and operations, with an Engineering and Technical Committee composed of the outstanding scientific research experts and industry development backbones both at home and abroad, to provide technology and policy consultations. The Center, with complete and full Juncao engineering technology research and products development capabilities, and well equipped with intermediate test facilities, now enjoys extensive cooperation relations with many domestic and international research institutes and enterprises.

"China National Engineering and Research Center of Jucao Technology" fully relies on FAFU and the related disciplines of crop genetics and breeding, crop cultivation, microbiology, food science and engineering, agricultural product quality and safety guidance, agricultural biotechnology, biological engineering, agricultural ecology, environmental protection, and etc., for Juncao scientific research and the relevant technological and industrial development.

Professor Huang Yifan, Vice Chancellor and a member of the CCP Standing Committee of FAFU, Supervisor for doctoral students, an expert entitled to the State Council approved "Government Special Allowances”, a candidate of Fujian provincial "Mass Talented Personnel Cultivation Project", and also a Fujian provincial "Excellent Educator”,is long engaged in animal science teaching and scientific research. He managed more than 20 subjects of ministeria 丨 and provinciallevels and many by the National Natural Science Fund, winner of 4 second prizes and one third prize of Fujian Provincial Science and Technology Awards, as well as honored with one First Prize for "Outstanding Educational Achievements" in Fujian province, one Second prize for "Excellent Science and Technology Books” of the East China Region; He also wrote and published 3 monographs and more than 80 scientific research papers.

Mr. Lin Zhanxi, Research Fellow The Executive Deputy Director and Chief Scientist of China National Engineering Research Center of JUNCAO Technology

Prof. Lin Zhanxi as the inventor of Juncao Technology, has served as the Supervisor for doctoral students, an Academician of the United Nations International Ecological Security Academy, Director of Fujian Provincial Juncao Engineering Technology Research Center, Director of Juncao Research Institute of FAFU, Director of Fujian Provincial Juncao development Engineering Association, and also concurrently Vice Chairman of Fujian Provincial Invention Association. He is honored as an expert entitled to State Council approved Government Special Allowances, with 45 years of services in scientific research, education and extension. He managed 21 major research subjects of ministerial and provincial levels, wrote and published 9 monographs. He was awarded By the Chinese Academy of Sciences、the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, and China Science and Technology Association as the “Most Outstanding Contributor” for Poverty Alleviation by means of technology, one of China's "Top 10 Champions” in poverty alleviation, the "People's Friendship Award” by the Chinese People's Friendship Association, "Order of Major Merit" by Fujian Provincial Government, the "Special Award" by Fujian Provincial Science and Technology Conference as the "All China Excellent Scientist Prof. Lin also received thea Geneva State International Invention Award” , and the" French Ministry of Interior and Territorial Control Planning Award " respectively.

Goals of the Center: The Center will be fully engaged in establishment of a first-class Juncao engineering technology research and development platform, a first-class training base and a first-class cooperation and service platform. Through technological innovation, engineering and technology integration, live up to be the Juncao industry leader in China and the source of continuous technology innovations. Through implementation of major national scientific research projects and development of extensive domestic and foreign technology cooperation

and exchanges, cultivate and bring up a batch of high quality Juncao engineering and technical personnel with strong practical ability in scientific research and production, to build up the continuous innovation ability in Juncao engineering technology research and development, at the same time, the Center will be actively and extensively engaged in provision of science and technology services, poverty alleviation work, economic aid and assistance to foreign countries, to promote Juncao industry development as a national strategic emerging industry.

In 1996,Professor Shu-Ting Chang, the internationally renowned fungus mushroom scientist, Professor Hadwan Hamid Ali of the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture, and University of Baghdad, and Professor Arailde Fontes Urben of the Brazilian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, visited the Juncao Technology Research Institute of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University.

In 1997, Professor Xie Lianhui (1 st from righ t), Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences made an inspection and offered technical guidance at the JUNCAO Technology Demonstration Base in Papua New Guinea.

Research and Development

JUNCAO is defined as the Herbaceous herb that can be used as cultivate substrate for edible and medicinal fungi‘

A series of comprehensive techniques for cultivation of edible/medicinal fungi and production of mycelium protein forage with Juncao.

The industry by utilizing Juncao Technology and other relative techniques to boost production and development.

It is a new effective way to provide fungus protein food to humankind by application of Juncao technology. Each Mu (1 hectare=15 Mu ) of land planted with Juncao can produce 4-5 tons fresh and good quality mushrooms. Juncao also has excellent performances in sandy land and desertification control and rehabilitation of soil and water erosion areas. If Juncao could be extensively planted at the littoral along the Yellow River and the soil erosion, barren, and desert zone, per Mu yield could reach 15 tons of fresh Juncao, which shall provide abundant high quality feed for the development of animal husbandry. Juncao can also be used to produce methane, and the yield is 2 times more then using corn or wheat straw, and equivalent to 4 tons of coal if used as fuel for power generation. What is more that each Mu of the Giant Juncao can absorb carbon dioxide 6 tons per year.

For harnessing, improvement and control of soil erosion, planting\cultivation of giant Juncao is simple, easy to do, cost-saving and with quick and excellent effects; and usually it takes only 3 months to achieve very satisfying results. At present, the Juncao harvested from the places suffering from soil erosion can be used as substrate for cultivation of food and medicinal mushrooms, animal feed, and biomass energy materials, thus realized both the economic and ecological benefits at the same time. The cost is only less than 20% comparing with the cost of the traditional biological harnessing and management.Juncao planted at Changting county of Fujian province for dk management of avalanche sloping areas, at Yongning 取 county of Ningxia Hui Autonamous Region for desertification control, and at the Linzhi sub-region of Tibet for harnessing and rehabilitation of moving sand dunes, have all been successful. The Juncao harvested are used as substrates for cultivation of edible and medicinal fungi and mushrooms, animal feed, and biomass materials, thus achieved the harmonised combination of both the economic and ecological gains for sustainable development.

AchievementsWith an aim to solve the contradictions between fungi production and forestry ecological balance, Prof. Lin Zhanxi of Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University( FAFU ) started to “use weeds to replace wood” for cultivation of edible and medicinal fungus in 1983,he became successful in 1986, and thus invented the Juncao Technology. Up to date the Juncao Technology, after more then 20 years1 development, can use 45 kinds of grasses for cultivation and production of 55 kinds of edible and medicinal fungi’ and expanded to use the spent substrate for production of animal feeds, use the fresh giant Juncao for generation of biomass energy, as well as for comprehensive utilization of Juncao Technology, and improved conditions for systematic environmental protection, etc.

Since 1999,Prof. Lin Zhanxi, his team and his Juncao Technology started to undertake the most priority ones among "the National Spark Projects”,poverty alleviation in the form of Fujian Provincial cooperation with and support to Ninxia, Xingjiang and Tibetan autonomous Regions, cultivation of giant Juncao for economic development for the resettled farmers because of the construction of the “the Three Gorges Project", 47 experimental projects assigned by the Ministry of Science and Techonology, China State Forestry Bureau, and at the same time provide training and technical guidance for Juncao industry development and mushroom cultivation in many places in China. Since 1994, the M inistry of Commerce enlisted and started Juncao Technology as one of the international training courses, and also as one of the China,s economic aid projects to Papua New Guinea, Lesotho, Fiji, Eritrea, as well as the Agriculture Technology Demonstration Center in Rwanda { with Juncao Technology asthe mainstay). Prof. Lin Zhanxi and his Juncao Technology was also used as the friendly cooperation project between Fujian province and the relevant sisterly provinces in Papua New Guinea and South Africa respectively. Prof. Lin and FAFU also accepted foreign students whose scholarship offered by China M inistry of Education.

Technology Propagation

FAFU, since 1987 up to date, has conducted 110 seminars as entrusted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Fujian Provincial Branches of the Chinese Communist Youth League, the Chinese Women Association, as well as many other provinces; a total of 6,549 "backbone technicians" hail from 386 counties/municipalities/sub­regions of 31 provinces throughout China trained with Juncao Technology. Since April 1997, Juncao Technology was regarded by the Fujian Provincial and Ningxia Regional governments as a mutual supporting project for poverty alleviation, a total of 247 FAFU Juncao technical experts sent to serve about 17,500 farmers' households for coaching from Ato Z of Juncao mushroom cultivation skills, and enabled the farmers to harvest 5,000 Yuan more for each household, and the Juncao industry has really become the most effective trade with which the farmers get rid of poverty and become better off. In the year of 2001,the Juncao industry was named as Fujian provincial project for supporting Xingjiang Autonoumous Region, and the same for Tibetan Autonomous Region in June of 2011.

Fujian Provincial Government from 2009 to 2012regarded the Luoyuan, Minqing, JiangLe..... andtotaling 18 counties in the province as the pioneer Juncao industry demonstration counties. Our Center is now in cooperation with Shenxi, Sichuan, Zhejiang,Hainan, Tibet, Xinjiang, Hunan, Guangxi..... andtotaling 23 provinces for planting giant Juncao; and set up 18 "Juncao Industry Demonstration and Propagation Bases" in Fujian, Zhejiang, Hainan,Hunan, Xinjiang...., and many other provinces.

InAugust 2011, Mr. Zhang Laiwu ( middle of 2nd row )t vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology and member of the CCP Standing committee, and Mr. Meng Deli ( 5th from right,2nd row) vice Chairman of the Tibetan Autonomous Regional Government, witnessed the signing ceremony between FAFU and the Lingzhi county government of Tibet for economic assistances and cooperation with Jucao Technology.

Juncao Technology through international cooperation and economic aid to foreign countries as provided by the Chinese government, has established Juncao Technology Demonstration Centers in Papua New Guinea, Lesotho and South Africa, and constructed an Agriculture Technology Demonstration Center in Rwanda ( another Demonstration Center shall be constructed and set up in Fiji). All these Centers are serving as demonstration, training, and propagation bases of Juncao Technology.

FAFU Juncao Technology Research lnstitute\China National Engineering Research Center of Juncao Technology has received visits by more then 200 foreign delegations o f experts\enterprises\d ip lom atic envoys, and we have made v is its to 35 countries. The Center has always played an active role in supporting the developing countries to respond to the climate and environm ental change, protection of ecology, increment of employment, poverty alleviation, improvement of the people's livelihood and their diet structures.

International Cooperation and Technical Training

As entrusted by the Ministry of Commerce of the Chinese government, FAFU Juncao Technology Research lnstitute\China National Engineering Research Center of Juncao Technology have up to date conducted both at home and abroad totaling 51 Juncao Technology and Industrial development training courses\seminars\workshops, and a total of 1,654 participants of agricultural technicians, government officials, experts, scholars, farmers, etc., from 87 countries of the five continents of Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and Oceania, attended the seminars\workshops\training courses, in the Chinese, English, French, Russian, Arabic, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Thai, TokPisin, and Kwa Zulu languages. Today all these 11 different kind of languages are used by people of 87 countries the world over for propagating the Juncao Technology.
