Chinese Delegation

On August 3rd, Vanier College welcomed 34 teachers and administrators from Wuhan, Hubei, Changjiang and various other vocational institutions in China. The delegates visited colleges and universities across Canada, but relayed to us through our translator and Mandarin teacher, Shirley Zhu, that they felt more welcome at Vanier College than anywhere else in Canada. They appreciated the presentation given to them by Industrial Electronics teacher, Jason Duheme, which demonstrated how our college’s technical programs can maintain healthy relationships with industry and how those relationships benefit our students. We hope that these institutions return to our college and that partnerships with their institutions result from their visit.

New Vanier Website Home Page

I am writing to inform the community that we have launched an all-new, redesigned homepage for Vanier College. The new homepage was designed to focus primarily on an external audience. As such, it is focused on marketing and promotional content and centered on information that is relevant to prospective students and employees. For example, emphasis has been placed on showcasing the different programs that are available at Vanier College as well as student life on campus. We have also added a Vanier Favorites option and a series of Quick Links at the top of the page in order to facilitate navigation of the

website. The restructuring of the Vanier College homepage is designed to offer more centralized and cohesive communications for both our external and internal users. Staff, Teachers and Current Students In addition to introducing other aesthetic changes in areas such as the Staff Directory we have also moved some content away from the homepage and transferred it to the Omnivox Portal. Some examples of things that have been removed from the homepage include information that had previously been listed under the main menu options for Staff, Teachers and Current Students. The Omnivox Portal The goal of the Omnivox Portal will continue to be focused on promoting internal communications so that members of the community can easily find all pertinent information that is relevant to the day-to-day activities of the college. In addition, users who haven’t already done so can subscribe to different communities on the Omnivox Portal whereby they can communicate and exchange with others on subjects that are of particular interest to certain people on campus. Please note that the Omnivox Portal is now the default start-up website for all computers on campus. This initiative will make it easier for you to sign on and gain immediate access to your personalized portal homepage where you will have access to emails, MIO’s and all important messages that may be of interest to you. Vanier Department Websites The Staff Directory website has also been re-designed in order to integrate seamlessly with the new homepage. Several department websites have also made the transition to the new homepage’s design. The current list of transitioned department websites consists of: Academic Programs, Admissions, Registrar’s Office, Academic Advising. Vanier Program Websites Finally, please note that websites for Vanier Programs have not yet been affected by these changes. They will also make the transition over to the new homepage’s design in the near future. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Religious Holy Days

The Office of the Academic Dean would like to remind faculty members of the College's policy and procedures regarding religious holy days. The only holidays formally recognized by Vanier's Academic Calendar are those set by law or by the collective agreements. These holidays are Labour Day, Thanksgiving, the Christmas break, Good Friday, Easter Monday and Victoria Day. Other religious holy days, such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover (Jewish) and Id al-Fitr (Islamic) amongst others, are not recognized in the Academic Calendar. On such days, College proceedings and classes take place as usual. The students who are absent for religious reasons should not suffer a penalty related only to their absence. They are responsible for the material covered in the classes and labs that they miss, same as with other absences. Faculty, however, should avoid giving examinations on these days, or should provide a suitable alternative to the students who will be fulfilling their religious obligations. Faculty should realize that Jewish Holidays begin at sundown on the evening before the holiday. Late afternoon exams should be avoided on these days, if possible, in order to permit students to be at home by sundown. Faculty should ask their students to inform them in writing within the first week of classes of the particular date(s), time(s) and name(s) of the religious holy day(s) on which they will be absent. Alternative arrangements convenient to both students and faculty can then be made. In order to provide the full class time for the students, faculty who are absent for religious holy days should make every effort to see that their classes meet as usual. There are two ways to provide substitute teachers for your classes:

1. Find a teacher qualified to teach in your discipline that would be willing to "swap" classes with you, at no cost to the College, and inform the Faculty Dean in writing prior to the absence. This notification must include the name of the religious holy day(s) and the date(s) of absence, the scheduled classes for these days and the name of the substitute teacher(s).

2. Notify the College as per the normal absence reporting

procedures. Since you are officially absent, the College will apply the Substitute Teachers Policy.

Absences on religious holy days should be reported by clicking on Teachers on the College’s home page: (http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca ) then on Omnivox; log in on Omnivox and then click on Teachers Absences.

Vanier Indigenous Circle

One of the mandates of the Vanier Indigenous Circle is to promote awareness of indigenous cultures, realities, and languages on campus. There are 50 distinct Aboriginal languages still spoken in Canada. Each of those languages holds within them the unique histories, cultural practices, spiritual beliefs, and political and social systems of their respective nations. This semester we will be sharing words and phrases in Anishinaabemowin (Ah-ni-shi-nah-bay-mow-in), the language spoken by the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Algonquin Nations. There are 47,740 speakers of this language in Canada, as well as 8,791 speakers in the United States. Should you have Indigenous students in your class and are unsure of how to make meaningful connections between Indigenous cultures and the curriculum, please contact us.

International Students Orientation Session

On Thursday, August 13th, the International Education Office organized an orientation session for international students. We are proud to support more than 100 students who come from over 30 countries outside Canada. The purpose of this orientation was to inform students about on-campus engagement activities and the resources available to help them succeed inside and outside of the classroom. The session was well attended and students said they felt less anxious about the upcoming semester. It also provided them the opportunity to meet new people since many of them are new to our country and to our city. We warmly welcome them to the Vanier community and wish them all a successful semester. A big thank you to Marya Grant from Student Services, Joanne Ellis from The Learning Centre, and Haritos Kavallos from the Mathematics & Science Centre for taking the time to talk to students about their services.

Jennifer Joseph, International Education Office

International Education now comes under the Dean of the Faculty of Social Science, Commerce, Arts and Letters

I am thrilled be to be taking over International Education from Judy Macdonald who has retired after 42 years at Vanier. International will remain the same as before with the same responsibilities, including helping to organize and register students for day and longer term trips, organizing conferences, and helping organize projects abroad. We will promote our international reputation through relationships with educational facilities worldwide, and will maintain our existing partnerships in China, Europe, Africa and Central America. Of course Jennifer Joseph will continue to work with International projects, and will now be working with me. She and the International Education Office will be moving to its new location in room F-217 by the beginning of September. Her extension and email will stay the same (extension 7936; [email protected]). To ensure that I fully understand all the programs, projects and visits that are presently organized through International Education, we will not be starting any new projects during the 2015-2016 academic year. All projects that have already been confirmed however will be completed as scheduled.

To find all necessary forms needed and any other information about International Education at Vanier, please go to Vanier Favourites on our updated webpage, and click on International Education.

Another Year Begins for Women’s Studies at Vanier

Vanier is proud of its pioneering efforts in establishing a Women’s Studies major. Through the hard work and determination of many Vanier women, present and past, our college was the first CEGEP to offer a women’s studies course in 1978. From this, the Women’s Studies major was “born.” Today, the major includes core courses that not only cover the spectrum of women’s experiences, but also others that explore how we are all affected by our gendered world. Have a look at our brochure to see courses that explore topics such as the body, sexuality, racialization, and masculinity through the lens of gender and identity. Il y a même des cours en français. (http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/womens-studies/files/2015/08/womens-studies-brochure-2015.pdf) Women’s Studies at Vanier as always been more than the sum of its course offerings. The Women’s Studies Program is driven by the volunteer staff and faculty who ensure that activities such as the December 6th Commemoration (Polytechnique) and International Women’s Week continue to engage, enlighten and move the Vanier community. I’d like to welcome past committee members and extend an invitation to all others in the college (faculty and staff) who may be interested in getting involved with Women’s Studies. The first meeting of the school year will be held on Thursday, August 27 at 2:30 in the Women's Resource Centre (A-573). If you have questions, please send them my way: Maggie Kathwaroon (Humanities) at [email protected], ext. 6045.

Maggie Kathwaroon, Women’s Studies Coordinator

Referral Form: Early Alert Support

There is a system in place for teachers to refer students to support services. The Early Alert Support referral form should be completed and submitted as soon as it becomes noticeable that a student is likely to fail your course and requires support beyond help understanding course content. I am pleased to announce that it is no longer mandatory for you to obtain consent from your students before referring them. You will receive confirmation that the referral has been received and the student has been contacted. The student will then meet with a member of the Student Success Advisory Committee, who will refer the student to relevant resources and follow-up to ensure the student is making use of them. Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you want further information about this new initiative: extension 7395 or [email protected]. Referral form: Early Alert Support: http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/student-success/referral-form/. A link can also on http://www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/teachers.

Social Science Festival 2015 – October 19-23, 2015 Complex Diversities – Diverse Complexities

In the Social Sciences, we like to talk about how complex and diverse our world is. But what do complexity and diversity mean? We are often exposed to over simplification in both of these areas, which leads to misunderstandings at the local, national and international levels. This year’s Social Science Festival will explore the complexity of diversity and the diversity of complexity. We will invite participants to think about and discuss the diverse strands of complexity in which we are immersed as well as the complex nature and intersections of diversity. Our goal is to stimulate interest and curiosity among participants and to provide an opportunity to apply analytical skills to real world concerns in an exciting context. Confirmed topics for auditorium presentations include a discussion of the Oka crisis and its impacts 25 years later, a cross-cultural and historical analysis of beliefs in vampires, living with disabilities such as autism, blindness, and deafness, the Canadian residential school legacy, and supporting the voices of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour who are LGBTTIQA. There will also be a number of student panels, including one on student engagement, and a number of small workshops hosted by the

Commerce department on a variety of topics such as creativity, marketing oneself, and the stock market. If you have ideas for a student panel or a small workshop that you would like to host on your own or with students, please get in touch! The full schedule should be out in early October. In the meantime, please plan some time in your course schedule for this exciting event! For more information, please contact Jacky at [email protected] or at extension 8323.

Collective Gardens on Vanier grounds

Over the summer, a number of teachers, staff and students volunteered to create what you can see all around campus next to the N, K, G, H and B buildings: vegetable and flower gardens! Get closer, open your eyes and you will find treasures! How do the Gardens contribute to Sustainability? There are many ways how but in a nut shell the garden project on campus does not only produce tomatoes and basil. From an environmental perspective, it

enhances biodiversity and helps reconnect components of the ecosystem. Socially, it brings people together, encourages initiatives, cooperation and engagement, and through these helps reconstitute some of the lost aspects of "community". Economically, by providing food it has the potential to improve local food security and sovereignty. It also represents a fantastic educational tool whereby participants get to learn hands-on about gardening, composting systems, rain water collections and drip irrigation systems, and overall reconnect with elements of nature (insects, birds, rodents such as our dear squirrels and ground hogs...) which we are ultimately an integral part of! Upcoming events:

Garden meeting - all welcome! UB, August 26 in A310. On the agenda: summer 2015 achievements, up-coming events and future goals. Produce from our gardens will be distributed by drawing lots!

Apple picking on campus UB, September 23 & 30, between K and N buildings. Bring a bag to collect your apples and your smile! If you are a teacher and would like a gardening session with your students, we can potentially arrange for that. It could range from

45 to 90 minutes and be purely informative or have some hands-on component. To keep in tune with what is happening and view photos with no obligation to get involved:

Teaching Tips: A Great Start

Getting the semester off to a great start means setting the tone for your course and establishing expectations for the semester from the first class onwards. Here are three key recommendations which will help you during the first week: 1) include an Ice Breaker activity for you and your students, 2) review the Course Outline (there are many creative ways to approach this), and 3) Begin Teaching.

1. Ice Breaker Activities

Benefits of Ice Breakers There are many reasons and benefits of using Ice Breakers. Ice Breakers: help everyone to get to know each other; encourage cooperation between students; work on sharing and respect when everyone is included equally; and create a fun learning atmosphere which can help your course get off to a great start.

Ice Breakers:

(a) Meet One New Person – Have students find someone they don’t know and ask them to find out something unique about them, or something the two students have in common, or what their most adventuresome activity has been to date, etc. Then have each student introduce their partner to the group. Including yourself in the activity with the students is also recommended.

(b) True or False – Have students write three things about themselves – two things that are true and one that is false. Then have fun guessing which items are the true ones and which item is false.

(c) Questions to Answer – Have students discover the answers to a list of questions. Some question ideas to get you started could include: how many people: have blue eyes; are

Image courtesy of Sayan Samana/ Freedigitalphotos.net

wearing red today; have travelled below the equator; speak Mandarin; have done sky-diving; been in a hot-air balloon; etc.

These are just a few ideas of literally thousands of Ice Breakers. Be creative and have fun.

Course Outlines

During the first class, you need to review your Course Outline. Although it may not be obvious, there are many creative and fun ways of doing this. Some suggestions include: begin on the last page; have students discover the due dates of assignments and tests; challenge them to find your classroom on the Vanier map site, discover when PASS Day is, or which Friday will follow the Monday schedule; etc. Have students work in pairs or small groups to explain the course competencies in common language, describe the assessments, understand the policies and class rules, etc. Encouraging students to participate and share in the review of the Course Outline will allow their voices to be heard and, we hope, their minds to be engaged in your specific course.

2. Begin Teaching!

One of the best ways to begin the semester on a positive note is to begin teaching from the first class onwards. This helps to set the tone and confirms your expectations for the semester. Above are some ways to gets your course started. Now think of ways to engage your students in your specific course objectives and competencies. Some ideas include: have students write a paragraph (to get a writing sample from each student) about what they know of the first topic or competency you will address in your course; have students complete a short quiz about knowledge, vocabulary, or theories in your discipline; have students work in groups to come up with personal or common learning outcomes for the course; etc. Take the opportunity to engage the students with the course in fun and exciting ways that will awaken their curiosity. August is here and it’s Back to Class! Use your renewed energy to begin the semester in positive and creative ways. Whether this is your first, fifth, or twenty-fifth semester – Welcome! It is an exciting time of year. Let’s get off to a great start!

Receiving and Delivery

Procurement Services would like to remind everyone that ALL items that are purchased for the college must be received at receiving. In order for companies to be paid, the items must be received and verified by the receiving department in order to allow payments to go through. By receiving your items directly, it creates delays in the payments to the company which creates hardship on them and makes them too often no longer want to do business with the College. In order to keep having good prices and availability of goods, it is important that we maintain good relationships with our suppliers. As for changes in the methods of internal delivery, from now on, all items that are received at the college must be signed by the internal customer. Upon reception at the college, you will be

contacted by receiving in order to advise you that your item have arrived and to schedule a delivery. If it is not possible to schedule a delivery or you miss a scheduled delivery, you will be asked to pick up your items from receiving directly. Thank you!

VTV Update

VTV is back for another exciting year, albeit on a reduced schedule. Essentially this means production time may potentially take longer for VTV projects. That being said, please don’t hesitate to contact us with video project ideas or proposals.

For event coverage, check out our online form: http://vtv.vaniercollege.qc.ca/event-request-form/ Our vision for year two: This year we’ve decided to give more autonomy to the students in the day-to-day operations at VTV. We are taking on serious student volunteers for a number of positions at VTV (lead videographer, reporter, social media manager etc.). As a result these select students will benefit from professional experience in communications while allowing VTV to produce more content. This differs from last year where we took on many volunteers but not in distinctive roles. The VTV student volunteers will also have excellent perks such as access to our equipment, our office, our computers, reference letters, training etc. (see list below). If you happen to know any students who may be interested in one of these roles, please send them to our webpage: http://vtv.vaniercollege.qc.ca/get-involved/ These are the roles we are looking to fill: - Lead Videographer (Sports, Events, Narrative) - Sports Videographer - Event Videographer

- Narrative Videographer - Assistant Videographer / Production Assistant - Lead Reporter - Sports Reporter - News Reporter - Event Reporter - Lead Video Editor & VFX - Video Editor - Assistant Video Editor - Social Media Manager – Facebook & Twitter - Social Media Manager – Instagram Finally, if you are interested in booking VTV for a classroom visit, please write us directly at [email protected]. Typically we take no more than 5 minutes to talk about VTV and how to get involved.

Clothing Drive - Fundraiser for student trip to Belize

Too many clothes and enough space? Need a change in your linen? Your shoes aren't trendy anymore? Don't throw anything away! Someone's discards can always become someone else's treasure! ;)

As part of the fundraising for the 8-day trip to Belize during March break 2016, in the context of the complementary course The Tropics: Opportunities and Challenges, students will be collecting used clothes, footwear and linen. All the donations will be brought to Village des Valeurs (4906, rue Jean-Talon O) as students will receive 20 cents/lb of donation. How and where can I donate? See the poster at the end of Intercom for details on when and where you can donate on campus. Can I bring my donations directly to the above address? Yes you can! You can do so at any time this particular store is open, but you must make sure to indicate that your donations are going toward "Vanier College - Belize". Also specify that your donations come from "anonymous". That way, these will go toward the common pot as opposed to going to individual students who are bringing donations in their own name. For any questions, please contact me.
