sung by the cathedral girls’ choir

PRECES Plainsong

Please sit for PSALM 67 sung by the choir

God be merciful unto us and bless us: and shew us the light of his countenance, and be merciful

unto us. That thy way may be known upon earth: thy saving health among all nations. Let the

peoples praise thee O God: yea let all the peoples praise thee. O let the nations rejoice and be

glad: for thou shalt judge the folk righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Let the peoples

praise thee O God: let all the peoples praise thee. Then shall the earth bring forth her increase:

and God even our own God shall give us his blessing. God shall bless us: and all the ends of the

world shall fear him. Please stand

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now,

and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Please sit

THE FIRST LESSON Micah 5: 1-5a

5 Now you are walled around with a wall; siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike the ruler of

Israel upon the cheek. 2But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of

Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old,

from ancient days. 3Therefore he shall give them up until the time when she who is in labor has

brought forth; then the rest of his kindred shall return to the people of Israel. 4And he shall stand

and feed his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And

they shall live secure, for now he shall be great to the ends of the earth; 5and he shall be the one

of peace. If the Assyrians come into our land and tread upon our soil, we will raise against them

seven shepherds and eight installed as rulers.

THE SECOND LESSON Luke 21: 34-38

“Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the

worries of this life, and that day catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who

live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to

escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” Every day he was

teaching in the temple, and at night he would go out and spend the night on the Mount of Olives,

as it was called. And all the people would get up early in the morning to listen to him in the

temple.

The Collect, of the Day

Almighty God, Give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the

armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in

great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious Majesty to judge both

the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth

with thee and the Holy Spirit, now and ever. Amen.

ANTHEM

Jesus, good above all other,

Gentle child of gentle mother,

In a stable born our brother,

Give us grace to persevere.

Jesus, cradled in a manger,

For us facing every danger;

Living as a homeless stranger,

Make we thee our king most dear.

Jesus for thy people dying,

Risen Master, death defying,

Lord in heav’n, thy grace supplying,

Keep us to thy presence near.

Jesus, who our sorrows bearest,

All our thoughts and hopes thou sharest,

Thou to man the truth declares

Help us all thy truth to hear.

Lord, in all our doings guide us,

Pride and hate shall ne’er divide us,

We’ll go on with thee beside us,

And with joy we’ll persevere.

PRECES Thomas Morley (1557–1602)

Please sit for PSALM 85: 1–2, 8–13 sung by the choir

Lord thou art become gracious unto thy land: thou hast turned again the captivity of Jacob. Thou

hast forgiven the offence of thy people: and covered all their sins. I will hearken what the Lord

God will say concerning me: for he shall speak peace unto his people and to his saints that they

turn not again unto foolishness. For his salvation is nigh them that fear him: that glory may dwell

in our land. Mercy and truth are met together: righteousness and peace have kiss'd each other.

Truth shall flourish out of the earth: and righteousness hath looked down from heaven. Yea the

Lord shall shew loving kindness: and our land shall give her increase. Righteousness shall go before

him: and shall direct his going in the way. Please stand

THE FIRST LESSON Hosea 6: 1-6

6“Come, let us return to the Lord; for it is he who has torn, and he will heal us; he has struck

down, and he will bind us up. 2After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will raise us up,

that we may live before him. 3Let us know, let us press on to know the Lord; his appearing is as

sure as the dawn; he will come to us like the showers, like the spring rains that water the earth.”

4What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? Your love is like a

morning cloud, like the dew that goes away early.5Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets, I

have killed them by the words of my mouth, and my judgment goes forth as the light. 6For I desire

steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

THE SECOND LESSON 1 Thessalonians 1: 2-10

2We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers,

constantly 3remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labour of love and

steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4For we know, brothers and sisters beloved by God,

that he has chosen you, 5because our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but

also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction; just as you know what kind of persons

we proved to be among you for your sake. 6

And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for in

spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit,7

so that you

became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8For the word of the Lord has

sounded forth from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has

become known, so that we have no need to speak about it. 9For the people of those regions report

about us what kind of welcome we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols, to

serve a living and true God,10

and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the

dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming.

I waited patiently for the Lord: and he inclined unto me and heard my calling. He brought me also

out of the horrible pit, out of the mire and clay: and set my feet upon the rock and ordered my

goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth: even a thanksgiving unto our God. Many shall

see it and fear: and shall put their trust in the Lord. Blessed is the man that hath set his hope in the

Lord: and turned not unto the proud and to such as go about with lies. O Lord my God great are

the wondrous works which thou hast done, like as be also thy thoughts which are to us-ward: and

yet there is no man that ordereth them unto thee. If I should declare them and speak of them:

they should be more than I am able to express. Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not: but mine

ears hast thou opened Burnt-offering and sacrifice for sin hast thou not required: then said I, Lo I

come. In the volume of the book it is written of me, that I should fulfil thy will, O my God: I am

content to do it, yea thy law is within my heart. I have declared thy righteousness in the great

congregation: lo I will not refrain my lips O Lord and that thou knowest. I have not hid thy

righteousness within my heart: my talk hath been of thy truth and of thy salvation. I have not kept

back thy loving mercy and truth: from the great congregation. Withdraw not thou thy mercy from

me O Lord: let thy loving-kindness and thy truth alway preserve me. For innumerable troubles are

come about me, my sins have taken such hold upon me that I am not able to look up: yea they are

more in number than the hairs of my head and my heart hath failed me. O Lord, let it be thy

pleasure to deliver me: make haste O Lord to help me. Let them be ashamed and confounded

together that seek after my soul to destroy it: let them be driven backward and put to rebuke that

wish me evil. Let them be desolate and rewarded with shame: that say unto me, Fie upon thee, fie

upon thee. Let all that seek thee be joyful and glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say

alway The Lord be praised. As for me, I am poor and needy: but the Lord careth for me. Thou art

my helper and redeemer: make no long tarrying, O my God. Please stand

THE FIRST LESSON 1 Kings 22: 1-28

22For three years Aram and Israel continued without war. 2But in the third year King Jehoshaphat

of Judah came down to the king of Israel. 3The king of Israel said to his servants, “Do you know

that Ramoth-gilead belongs to us, yet we are doing nothing to take it out of the hand of the king of

Aram?” 4He said to Jehoshaphat, “Will you go with me to battle at Ramoth-gilead?” Jehoshaphat

replied to the king of Israel, “I am as you are; my people are your people, my horses are your

horses.” 5But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, “Inquire first for the word of

the Lord.” 6Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, about four hundred of them,

and said to them, “Shall I go to battle against Ramoth-gilead, or shall I refrain?” They said, “Go up;

for the Lord will give it into the hand of the king.” 7But Jehoshaphat said, “Is there no other

prophet of the Lord here of whom we may inquire?” 8The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat,

Page 7: Choral Services in Christ Church 1 Dec 14 · 2015-01-26 · CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL DUBLIN CHORAL SERVICES WEDNESDAY 3RD DECEMBER 2014 18.00 CHORAL EVENSONG sung by the cathedral

“There is still one other by whom we may inquire of the Lord, Micaiah son of Imlah; but I hate him,

for he never prophesies anything favorable about me, but only disaster.” Jehoshaphat said, “Let

the king not say such a thing.” 9Then the king of Israel summoned an officer and said, “Bring

quickly Micaiah son of Imlah.” 10

Now the king of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah were sitting

on their thrones, arrayed in their robes, at the threshing floor at the entrance of the gate of

Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them. 11

Zedekiah son of Chenaanah made

for himself horns of iron, and he said, “Thus says the Lord: With these you shall gore the Arameans

until they are destroyed.” 12

All the prophets were prophesying the same and saying, “Go up to

Ramoth-gilead and triumph; the Lord will give it into the hand of the king.” 13

The messenger who

had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, “Look, the words of the prophets with one accord are

favorable to the king; let your word be like the word of one of them, and speak favorably.” 14

But

Micaiah said, “As the Lordlives, whatever the Lord says to me, that I will speak.” 15

When he had

come to the king, the king said to him, “Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall

we refrain?” He answered him, “Go up and triumph; the Lord will give it into the hand of the

king.” 16

But the king said to him, “How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but

the truth in the name of the Lord?” 17

Then Micaiah said, “I saw all Israel scattered on the

mountains, like sheep that have no shepherd; and the Lord said, ‘These have no master; let each

one go home in peace.’” 18

The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Did I not tell you that he would

not prophesy anything favorable about me, but only disaster?” 19

Then Micaiah said, “Therefore

hear the word of the Lord: I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, with all the host of heaven standing

beside him to the right and to the left of him. 20

And the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab, so that

he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?’ Then one said one thing, and another said

another, 21

until a spirit came forward and stood before the Lord, saying, ‘I will entice

him.’ 22

‘How?’ theLord asked him. He replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all

his prophets.’ Then the Lord said, ‘You are to entice him, and you shall succeed; go out and do

it.’ 23

So you see, the Lord has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets;

the Lord has decreed disaster for you.” 24

Then Zedekiah son of Chenaanah came up to Micaiah,

slapped him on the cheek, and said, “Which way did the spirit of the Lord pass from me to speak

to you?” 25

Micaiah replied, “You will find out on that day when you go in to hide in an inner

chamber.” 26

The king of Israel then ordered, “Take Micaiah, and return him to Amon the governor

of the city and to Joash the king’s son, 27

and say, ‘Thus says the king: Put this fellow in prison, and

feed him on reduced rations of bread and water until I come in peace.’” 28

Micaiah said, “If you

return in peace, theLord has not spoken by me.” And he said, “Hear, you peoples, all of you!”

THE SECOND LESSON Romans 15: 4-13

4For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, so that by steadfastness

and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. 5

May the God of steadfastness

and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ

Jesus, 6so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus

Christ. 7

Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of

God. 8For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of the truth of

God in order that he might confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9and in order that the

Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, “Therefore I will confess you among the

Gentiles, and sing praises to your name”; 10

and again he says, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his

people”; 11

and again, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him”; 12

and

again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse shall come, the one who rises to rule the Gentiles; in him the

Gentiles shall hope.” 13

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you

may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Collect for Advent

Almighty God, Give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the

The Collect, of the Day

O Lord, Raise up (we pray thee) thy power, and come among us, and with great might succour us;

that whereas, through our sins and wickedness, we are sore let and hindered in running the race

that is set before us, thy bountiful grace and mercy may speedily help and deliver us; through the

satisfaction of thy Son our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Spirit, be honour and glory,

world without end. Amen.

ANTHEM

Vigilate ergo nescitis enim quando dominus domus veniat

Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh,

sero an media nocte an galli cantu an mane,

at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:

Vigilate ne cum venerit repente inveniat vos dormientes.

Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.

Quod autem dico vobis omnibus dico Vigilate.

And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.

CLOSING HYMN

during which a collection may be taken up

Hark! A herald voice is calling:

’Christ is nigh,’ it seems to say;

’Cast away the dreams of darkness,

O ye children of the day!’

Startled at the solemn warning,

Let the earth-bound soul arise;

Christ, her Sun, all sloth dispelling,

Shines upon the morning skies.

Lo! The Lamb, so long expected,

Comes with pardon down from heaven;

Let us haste, with tears of sorrow,

One and all to be forgiven.

So when next he comes in glory,

And earth’s final hour draws near,

May he then as our defender

On the clouds of heaven appear.

Honour, glory, virtue, merit,

To the Father and the Son,

With the co-eternal Spirit,

While unending ages run. Amen.
