A LA PERCHOINEChildrenThere were no tears as we all left our hou-ses We must not be lateThere were no tears saying farewell to dear ones Outside the school gate All our thoughts were of the great adventure We - could-n’t wait

Parents Be seeing you soon God be with you Look after my child God be with you.

All A la perchoine! A la perchoine!

Children There were no tears as we all climbed the gangway Knew we had to goThere were no tears as our boat left the quayside How were we to know That our families would not be re-u-ni-ted - soon

Parents Be seeing you soon God be with you Look after my child God be with you.

All A la perchoine! A la perchoine!

Children There was a song as our boat reached the castle Sarnia CherieAnd we all sang as our boat left the Island Island of beauty Guernsey’s shores becoming ever distant, England drew near.

Parents Be seeing you soon God be with you Look after my child God be with you.

All A la perchoine! A la perchoine!A la perchoine! A la perchoine!A la perchoine!

SAFE AND SOUND

Tossing, turning. It’s just like a nightmare from which we cannot awaken,Seems the journey ne-ver will end,Seems that we’re lost on a trip to eternity,Pitching and tossing all of the night. Will we ever see England’s shores? Will we ever reach Weymouth,Safe __ and __ sound?

Hours of waiting, for our boat to take us away from home and from danger,Now we’re wandering danger from what?P’raps we are leaping out of the frying pan. What are we doing? Where shall we go?Will we e-ver return again? Will we e-ver reach Weymouth, Safe __ and __ sound?

Memories of a Vauvert pupil

SAFE AND SOUND verse 3

Engine stopping, engine starting; drifting around since first thing this morning.Trips around the Weymouth Bay.Bit of sea breeze blows away all the cobwebs.Nice to see England! Nice to be here! Will we ever set foot ashore,Will we ever reach Weymouth,Safe __ and __ sound?

“It’s a Long way to Tipperary“ “Pack up your Troubles” “We’ll meet again“.

SAFE AND SOUND verse 4

Anchor lifted. Full ahead and into the harbour safe at our mooring.Gangplank lowered, stepping ashore.Pushing and shoving and marching in crocodiles. Now we are really on our way.Ever so pleased the adventure’s begun.Ever so glad to reach Weymouth Safe __ and __ sound?

SITTING IN A RAILWAY CARRIAGE

Sitting in a railway carriage, lights turned down low,We hear the stationmaster’s whistle and it’s time - to go,But there is no one that we’ve asked who really seems to knowJust where the train in bound or where our journey ends. Some have said we’re heading for the West,A porter told us that would be the best.We don’t care just where we go,As long as there’s a bed and bath and somewhere for a cup of teaAnd so we’re sitting in a railway carriage, lights turned down low,We hear the stationmaster’s whistle and it’s time - to go.We’ve come across the sea from Guernsey and continuing our journeyOn a fiery, steaming, monstrous train to take us to our home.

Sitting in a railway carriage, our little trainIs chugging slowly up the rolling hills, it seems such a strain,And when we reach the top we see another steep slope again. It seems our engine’s got too great a load to pull.Seven hundred packed in really tight,Through the darkness travelling all nightWe don’t care just where we go,As long as there’s a bed and bath and somewhere for a cup of teaAnd so we’re sitting in a railway carriage, our little trainIs chugging slowly up the roiling hills, it seems such a strain,We’ve come across the sea from Guernsey and continuing our journeyOn a fiery, steaming, monstrous train to take us to our home.

Sitting in a railway carriage steaming along,The wheels are syncopating with the track to sing their song. They say we’re heading for the North, We hope and pray that they’re wrong,Be-cause that’s not the song we’d like to hear them sing.Heading Northwards, signals set to go.Heading Northwards, spirits sinking low.We don’t care just where we go,As long as there’s a bed and bath and somewhere for a cup of teaAnd so we’re sitting in a railway carriage steaming along,The wheels are syncopating with the track to sing their song. We’ve come across the sea from Guernsey and continuing our journeyOn a fiery, steaming, monstrous train to take us to our home.

INSTRUMENTAL........

But now the train is slowing, and we’ll see just where we’re going On this fiery, steaming, monstrous train arriving at our …………home.

ITS A LONG WAY TO TIPPERARY

It’s a long way to Tipperary,It’s a long way to go.It’s a long way to TipperaryTo the sweetest girl I know!Goodbye, Piccadilly,Farewell, Leicester Square! It’s a long long way to Tipperary,But my heart’s right there.

Pack up your troubles in your old kit bagAnd smile, smile, smile.Don’t let your joy and laughter hear the snagSmile boys, that’s the styleWhat’s the use of worryingIt never was worth whileSo, pack up your troubles in your old kit bagAnd smile, smile, smile.

We’ll meet againDon’t know where, don’t know whenBut I know we’ll meet again some sunny dayKeep smiling throughJust like you always do‘Til the blue skies drive the dark clouds far awaySo will you please say “Hello” to the folks that I knowTell them I won’t be longThey’ll be happy to know that as you saw me goI was singing this songWe’ll meet againDon’t know where, don’t know whenBut I know we’ll meet again some sunny day
