Dear Friends,
“Even though I am old and grey-headed, do not forsake me, O Lord” Psalm 71 verse 18
Most of us are in the grey-headed bracket, but that’s no cause for despair! In this respect, we’re examples of the typical C. of E. congregation, outside of the ones in the cities which attract many of the younger generations which live there. This should be unsurprising as our congregations reflect our benefice demographic very well, because the overwhelmingly predominant group is composed of those those who’ve retired. However, just reflect for a moment. Amongst us, we have vast experience of life, and great stories to tell of God’s presence and working in our lives. Together, and in the power of the Holy Spirit, we can make the most of who we are and what we’ve got to offer and then share that within our communities? The tradition of October’s “St Luke’s Little Summer” might help us here. This past summer was gloriously hot and sunny, but now that’s behind us and we’re experiencing the changes that Autumn brings, with its winds and rain. Yet, around the time of the feast day of St Luke, which is on October 18th, up until the feast day of St Michael and All Angels on October 29th, we very often have a spell of weather known as “St Luke’s Little Summer”. This is a spell of calm, dry, warm and glorious weather. Taking that as a metaphor of hope, maybe we could lift up our (greying) heads to the Lord and rededicate ourselves in his service with all that we have and are, and pray for a vision of what He can and will do with and through us. For all of us, particularly those who are less mobile than we were, prayer is a great weapon in God’s armoury. And there are many other ways in which we can make an effective contribution and make a difference in the continuing work of God’s kingdom in our benefice. The late, great Frank Sinatra sang these words: Out of the tree of life I just picked me a plum You came along and everything started to hum Still it’s a real good bet The best is yet to come. With the Lord in our lives, the best is always yet to come. With love and blessings, Tony

Christ Church Harvest Appeal -
The Community of The Sisters of The Church
Louise Maby
The Sisters have written: “ We are so grateful for the amazing financial and practical support for our
work that we have received from individual donors, churches and other organisations over the past 12
months. Last year, we saw almost 9,000 callers, many of them new faces. We have also seen an
increase in the number of people disadvantaged by benefits sanctions. All this means we are more
dependent than ever on your kindness and generosity to help sustain our work.
We spend on average, more than £1,000 per week, most of it on bulk buying of basic foods to
supplement the food donations we receive. During the winter months, £150 per week of this goes on
topping up utility keys for callers who are struggling to pay for gas or electricity, and we urgently need
to replenish our funds to meet this basic need. Over the years, we have always had enough to go
round, but with the ever-rising costs of food and fuel, our resources are becoming considerably
depleted, and we are grateful for every donation, however small.”
The Christ Church Harvest Appeal requests tins (in date please) of meats, rice pudding, fruit, custard,
baked beans, soups and tuna. Packets of cereals, pasta, rice, instant soup, biscuits, tea bags and jars of
coffee.
Also welcome: tin openers and toiletries for men and women and nappies (especially larger sizes).
Items can be delivered to the church office any time from now on, ready to decorate the church in time for our Harvest Family service on Sunday, 7th October at 11.00am

Nailsea District Leg Club
Help please…….are you a retired former Registered Nurse or Health Care Assistant who would like to continue using your experience by volunteering at the Nailsea District Leg Club? A great team of Registered Practice and District Nurses provide expert assessment, advice and wound care every Wednesday morning in a social setting with a cuppa and chat. Additionally, there is a small team of caring Nurse Support Workers who have undertaken training with our Registered Nurses and while supervised can help with removing bandages and preparing members’ legs ready for treatment . Their assistance is an invaluable support for the nursing team, and enables more patients to be seen.
If you would like to come along and see what it is all about, without obligation, please call in to the Nailsea Tithe Barn, Church Lane, Nailsea, BS48 4NG any Wednesday morning between 9am - 11.30am and ask reception for a guided tour! We are busy so if you would like to call Sandy 01275 853547 and arrange a time that will be fine.
Cantanti Singers and Wind Band

Beatles music is always in the mix and the Wind Band provides splendid contrasts in the programme. Concert starts at 7.00pm; don't miss it!

LEE ABBEY 2018
Another truly wonderful weekend at Lee Abbey. We always find it very relaxing and of course good weather, good food and companionship make for a perfect weekend.
Our teaching sessions this time were Jonah, and the boundaries he had to cross in order to respond to God’s call. Firstly, although we may not necessarily consider them as such, we are surrounded by boundaries both physical and psychological; they are everywhere and some are necessary. But there is the boundary of our own comfort zone which can stem the course for change. We may also be bound by tradition as well as financial barriers, conditions of health and also mental issues. We need, like Jonah, to break these boundaries to become dynamic people and a dynamic rather than a static church.
We are living in overwhelming times and at sometimes the world does not seem a pleasant place to be. Nevertheless “ God will never give up on us” Sometimes because of reasons particularly personal we may turn away from God and only pray to God when we are desperate – so do not neglect prayer! Whatever our feelings or beliefs, God is always there for us.
Must share this. On Saturday night I went off to sleep and this voice said, “I have found God.” I replied, “ But I already know God” and the voice said “well now you know Him again”.
Tony Saunders
Note from the editor
VOLUNTEERS PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! The new format is here! PCC have given us permission to change the format to A4 (for a trial period) and here it is… We still need volunteers to do some of the extra articles that we can now include. Is there anyone out there who could draw on their writing skills and interests and regularly (it doesn’t have to be every month, necessarily) put together an article about gardening or wildlife or fishing or cooking? Really, it could be anything that we think would be of interest to a wider audience in the community. In the meantime I can fill the pages with quizzes and articles from online sources or from other church magazines but it would be lovely if we were producing some of our own articles. If you can help, please contact me at [email protected], or talk to me in church or leave a message in my pigeonhole at church. Many thanks, Kirsten

Back to school….?
It’s now a month into a new school year. Some families will relish being back in the ‘normal’ routine with structured days for indefatigable youngsters. Others will miss the relative freedom of weeks without the treadmill of various sports fixtures, practices, after school clubs and picks-ups. When I was a child I remember the school holidays seeming to stretch of forever, lazy, hazy days spent breakfasting in the garden on stewed apples and rhubarb (it was always sunny!); making tents with blankets and the swing frame or clothes line; or fishing for tiddlers in the nearby stream. Like all of us of a certain age, I’m sure I’m looking back with rather rose-tinted spectacles! I’m sure for hardworking teaching staff in our 182 church schools, whose ‘holidays’ are often spent planning the new term, the six weeks is never long enough. We give thanks for them and their calling. I also want to pay tribute to some of the more unsung heroes diligently working away behind the scenes – our network of 400 church school governors. These volunteers give up their time to serve and support their local school, its children, families and staff. They truly enrich what the school can offer and promote its distinctiveness as a church school through their knowledge and experience. It’s a vital role but in our diocese right now we have governor vacancies in over half of our church schools. That’s a big gap, with 98 out of 182 schools missing out on the full and diverse range of skills and expertise that governors bring. We’re seeking people from a range of backgrounds and ages to fill those gaps and serve as governors. If you’d like to give back to your community, and feel you have skills that will help local children and your local community thrive, I encourage to you find out more and apply at: www.bathandwells.org.uk/be-a-governor. We look forward to welcoming you to our church school family! With thanks for all our wonderful schools and remembering our children and students in their endeavours this term.

Bishop of Taunton

Mothers Union Harvest Appeal 2018 In 2017 we successfully called on our members and the public to help us support families in South Sudan who were in desperate need of food and other essential items. With your help we were able to raise over £30,000 - making it possible for Harriet Baka, our coordinator for South Sudan, to transport aid into areas made too dangerous for many other agencies. The money raised alongside other contributions led to over 20,000 refugees affected by the ongoing conflict being assisted. This year we’re asking you to continue supporting Harriet 'Mama Baka' as she works with even more refugees by introducing them to our "EAGLE" process. Originating in Uganda, EAGLE is aimed at helping communities first identify the fundamental issues facing them such as high illiteracy and innumeracy, gender-based violence and poverty. Groups then work to identify the skills they already possess and what may need further development. Once this has been established, they then work on achievable, realistic plans for how they can use these strengths and assets to solve the issues, meaning that they get resolved in a process fully owned by the community - creating lasting change. So far, EAGLE has been a huge success. For example one group of farmers in rural Uganda are now able to grow crops such as the Physalis fruit and export it to the EU, making them a successful and sustainable source of income. In a much larger cas,e over 5,000 people in the South Sudanese diocese of Lui (one of 26 Dioceses) have now received financial training. Because many South Sudanese who were forced to flee now live in camps in Northern Uganda and the border region between the two countries it made sense to trial EAGLE within the refugee camps. Over the past year Mama Baka and our development team been using EAGLE with small groups to assess its impact and now want to expand the process to as many refugees as possible. As the example in Lui shows, there is a great need for this programme to expand to include as many of the 50,000 Mothers Union members who can benefit from it. So, if you want to help the thousands of refugees then please donate to our Harvest appeal. See Jacqui Broughton or Chris Mahony for more details. Children's News
Happy Birthday this month to: Shannon Ovenden who is 16 on the 7th October; Harry Collinson will be 10 on the 15th; Jack Morris is 10 on the 18th and Amy Rockett is 8 on the 30th. Happy Birthday from everyone at Christ Church—have a fantastic day. This month we celebrate Harvest with a Children's Church on Sunday the 7th. Please make a note that for this one only it will start at the later time of 11am After the service everyone is invited to stay for the ploughman’s lunch. We are very much praying that some of our families will join us for this. Look out for the new Harvest board in the hall that Sue Lambert and Isla Collinson have designed and FFC will be adding to the Sunday before. A huge thank you to Sue and Isla. A reminder for the Children's Church team that the next planning meeting is on Monday the 8th in the hall at 6.30pm. Faith For Children (FFC) meet for their activities during the 10am services on the 14th and 21st. Any FFC on the morning of the 28th will be helping to get ready for another FUN@4 FOOD@5 at 4pm -5.30pm and to which everyone, no matter what age is invited to come along and join in. It's another 'Light Party' an alternative to Halloween and some of the favourite activities from last year—glitter pumpkins which come fresh from Triggols Farm, apple bobbing and yummy sprinkled covered apples, plus new activities will all add to the fun. Children's Church on the 4th November is 'Bring your Bible.' It doesn't matter what version but if everyone could bring their own bible along that would be great. I promise you will not be asked to take a test!! Children's Festival at Wells Cathedral is taking place again on Saturday 19th January 2019 from 10.30 - 3pm There will be a co.ach going again from outside the Church at 9.30am and gets us back about 4.15pm This is for 4-11yr olds with an adult. Cost £1.90 per person. The theme is 'Wonder of God, Earth, Moon and Stars’. It's a brilliant day out so if you and your family would like to go, please speak to me on a Sunday or get in touch by email: [email protected] When the coach is full then families will have to take their car so get in quick! It's halfterm this month so no Tuesday Tots and Tiddlers the week of the 29th October. So Tuesday Tots will be having their story and songs in the Church during the session on the 23rd October. Happy Harvest! Beverley Kelly Children's leader

3rd October Morning Prayers - Angela Wheller 10.00am 3rd October “Dangers of the Internet” - PCSO Andrew Gatenby 7.30pm 17th October “Glastonbury Abbey – Costumed Living” 2.30pm We are now into Autumn and planning Ploughman’s Lunches and Harvest Suppers. The summer months seem to have gone by so quickly. We are preparing for our MU Ploughman’s Lunch at the moment. This is something we all enjoy and, hopefully, we will be joined by some of our friends from other MU branches around our Deanery. John and I went to Prague in July to stay with our family and whilst we were there we went for 5 days up to the North, near the Polish border. The weather was gorgeous and we did some really beautiful walks. Even my four year old granddaughter kept up pretty well, although she did finish one really long trek on her daddy’s shoulders. Nowadays, our families seem to be all over the world. It was so different when I was small; they all seemed to be a car journey away, if that. We are lucky to have our families and we can keep in touch via the internet: Skype, telephone and such. This brings me to think of our subject at our evening meeting on October 3rd, “Dangers of the Internet”. If this is abused and used in the wrong way it, can be very dangerous. I shall be very interested to hear what PCSO Andrew Gatenby has to tell us about it. Many Mothers’ Union members, over the years, have attended Glastonbury Abbey for the MU Retreat which was held there in October. It is still held but at a different venue. It will be interesting to hear our speaker on “Costumed Living” and Glastonbury Abbey. The clocks will soon be going back for the winter months and we will be switching our heating back on, that is if you have not already done so. Every season brings its own special joys and sadness to us all – birthdays and anniversaries throughout the year. We remember those people, family or friends, who are no longer with us. I know I do. As I type this I’m thinking today would have been my mum and her twin sister’s birthday. My mum died many years ago now but I always remember her on Mothering Sunday, her birthday and, of course, Christmas. At Christ Church, I think it is a lovely idea that you can have flowers put in Church to remember a loved one.

Poppies Please!
This year, Tickenham Church plan to have a flow of poppies cas-cading from the top of the tower to ground level for Remem-brance Sunday. It’ll make a spectacular sight.
We therefore need some crocheted poppies — could you help? There is no particular pattern, people are doing their own thing, so sizes and shades of red will vary. This is the knitting pattern some are using:
Red DK wool. 4mm needles, Cast on 70 stitches and knit 8 rows
Knit 2 together across the next 3 rows (9 stitches) Cut off wool leaving about 8” tail. Thread tail through a needle and thread through the 9 stitches. Pull up into a crinkly circle and sew up. For the middle, with black wool cast on 15 stitches and knit one row. Cut off and thread through the stitches as above. Pull into a circle and sew up. Sew into middle of poppy. After sewing up and sewing middles in, leave some wool in the centre of the back so that we can tie them onto a net.
It’s not individual petals, but it serves quite well and is easy!
Please bring your finished poppies to Christ Church Office by 31st October. Thank you.
Harvest Festival Lunch on Sunday 7 October 2018
Everyone is invited to celebrate harvest at Christ Church, and to give thanks for God's goodness and provision.
Our service will start at the later time of 11.00am, (so please make a note in your diaries) followed by a Ploughman's Lunch in the Vestry Hall afterwards, at 12.00noon.
As this is a Children's Service, many young families from our Tots and Tiddlers groups will be with us, so please do come along, join in the celebration and make our families feel warmly welcomed.
As last year, there will be no charge for this lunch, just a donations bowl, but we do need to know how many to cater for, so please sign up on the sheet outside the office asap.
Please also note: this isn't a "Bring and Share"; your Ploughman's Lunch will be provided for you!

Do come along and enjoy both; you'll be able to find some great reading matter, perhaps some early Christmas gifts, and then a hot drink and a culinary confection! Everyone more than welcome.
PS. We'd be very grateful to receive donations of paperbacks and puzzles for the Book & Puzzle Fair.
Offerings through the Envelope scheme
Later this month new boxes of Freewill Offering Envelopes for another year will be available in the porch. On behalf of your PCC, thank you everyone for continuing to support Christ Church so generously for yet another year. Your offerings in these weekly envelopes are essential towards enabling us to continue paying our way. If you do not already use these, this might be an ideal opportunity to consider this way of making regular gifts to your Church. By using these you can give support every week throughout the year, and when you are not able to attend Service, bringing them some time later.. A few boxes marked “ SPARE” will be available, so please take one, and return the slip you will find inside with one of your offerings.( This is needed for recording purposes, to enable reclaim of Tax in some cases, and full confidentiality is always maintained.) So watch out for the new boxes of towards the end of the month, and collect the one with your name, OR one marked SPARE. ( Where records show an envelope set is no longer being used for various reasons, then a new box is not issued. But if you find there is not a new set for you, which you were expecting and still require, then please contact me, and I shall be happy to give you a new box.)

News from Kingshill Church School As we get back into the new school year the children are well under way with their learning and there is a real buzz in the classrooms. The new reception children started attending full time and staying to lunch in mid September - quite an experience for them - they are coping brilliantly. Our Christian value at the moment is Love and Friendship. We have been talking about how important it is to be a good friend to others and how we can be a blessing if we are a good friend. Mrs Thomson has met with our volunteers for a safeguarding briefing. It was lovely to welcome them back, we are so fortunate to have so many helpers from our parents, grandparents, Christ Church and the wider community. If you want to volunteer as well it’s not too late - just contact the school office on 852720. We have started the year on another high as we have received our certificate to celebrate our Gold School Games Award. Well Done Kingshill!

HAVE YOU READ IT?... …No, not the latest ‘must read’ novel or urgent notice; it’s the Bible I’m asking about. We have it read to us at church services, from the radio, TV and so on. Do we read it for ourselves, this gift, revelation, message from Father God about himself, creation, the purpose of it all, about the Lord Jesus, about we humans both in the big picture and in our day by day living? Yes, I know that lots of us do read the Bible, perhaps regularly, or on and off, now and again. Maybe we read a Gospel, a Psalm, or a passage here and there. 26 of us use Bible Reading Notes. Several organisations, e.g., Scripture Union, Bible Reading Fellowship issue booklets covering 2 or 3 months at a time of daily Bible readings. Each day we are given a passage to read with an explanatory, informative, encouraging comment on it to add to our own thoughts. The comments are written by Christians who have the gifts of understanding and writing about the Scriptures. We have samples of these Bible Reading Notes. Please ask Maurice Eveleigh or Jeanne Wemyss to show you some. And later this month we will put an exhibition of them in the Vestry Hall, too. You can start on these Bible Reading Notes at any time. We hope that more folk will want to join in… Maurice and Jeanne.
Book Review
NEVERTHELESS by JOHN KIRKBY
This is a great read! Wonderful and difficult, too. It’s a ‘mustard seed’ story (another one) about Father God working In the world these days.
This is the story of CAP – Christians Against Poverty – of how back in 1996 John Kirkby, and his wife were called to do something about how the crowds of people trapped in debt could be set free. That rings bells with me about how, in the Bible, God goes on about ‘setting the captives free’.
This book is the story of how this work of the Kingdom got started. How through many trials, difficulties, sacrifices, over many years; through prayer, faith in Father God, belief in the task, grew this CAP ‘mustard seed’ into growth and growing; into a large bush in which many have and keep on being set free from debt. This is a work started in Britain and spreading in other places on the planet! Here in our locality a CAP Debt Centre is beginning work.
This is a great God story to read. It is an encouraging read, and a challenging one, too. There’s a copy on the bookstall. I can supply more. Christian sisters and brothers, do read Christian books and mags. They truly are ‘good for us’.
