1 CHRIST’S UNITED’S NEWS & VIEWS JANUARY 2014 PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS BEGINNING WITH THANKSGIVING In many of Apostle Paul’s letters to the various churches, he begins his correspondence with a note of thanksgiving for the people and ministries of these churches. Each thank you normally bears witness to the grace and empowerment received in and through Christ, the constancy of prayer for and recognition of the ministry performed by the church in Christ’s name, and hope for continued faithfulness and encouragement for what lies ahead. In 1 Thessalonians, Paul writes, “We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” In Philippians, Paul begins his address by writing, “I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now.” Thanksgivings, as understood by the Apostle Paul, serve both as a form of remembrance as well as a way of entrance into a new beginning. These thanksgivings recall what has already occurred under and through the gracious workings of God in Christ and look forward with encouragement and hope for a future of ministry and service empowered by living presence of Christ. In 1 Corinthians, Paul states, “I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind.” Here, Paul acknowledges that thanksgiving provides both awareness and opportunity of what God’s grace has already done as well as what God continues to do in Chr ist for the future of the church. As we remember from our past, so too does our future depend upon and is called to rely on the strengthening presence of God’s faithfulness and grace as Paul notes, “He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” In Colossians, Paul confirms the powerful relationship of t he church’s thanksgiving with the gracious work of God in Christ. Paul writes, “In our prayers for you we always thank God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all

CHRIST’S UNITED’S NEWS & VIEWS JANUARY 2014

PASTOR’S PARAGRAPHS

BEGINNING WITH THANKSGIVING

In many of Apostle Paul’s letters to the various churches, he begins his correspondence with a note of thanksgiving for the people and ministries of these churches. In 1 Corinthians, Paul states, “I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind.” Here, Paul acknowledges that thanksgiving provides both awareness and opportunity of what God’s grace has already done as well as what God continues to do in Christ for the future of the church. As we remember from our past, so too does our future depend upon and is called to rely on the strengthening presence of God’s faithfulness and grace as Paul notes, “He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” In Colossians, Paul confirms the powerful relationship of the church’s thanksgiving with the gracious work of God in Christ. Paul writes, “In our prayers for you we always thank God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all

the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven.” Paul adds regarding the productive power of this faith and hope in God’s grace: “Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God.” As your pastor, I want to take this opportunity to thank God for all of you and for everyone involved in the life of Christ’s United Lutheran Church. By God’s grace, our congregation has had a rich and glorious ministry. And as we enter into a new year, a new beginning, we will continue to be transformed by the living presence of Christ Jesus as we share the gospel and bear witness to what is possible because of God’s grace. I want to thank you for the many and various ways you live out your faith and hope in and through the worship and ministry here at Christ’s United. You are a blessing! And as God directs us into a new year of blessed opportunity may we together continually discern the ways we can demonstrate our commitment to God through our participation in the life of the church as we make abiding and spiritual connections with one another that we may contribute ourselves and our resources to address any need brought before us by God. Again, thank you for your faithfulness and commitment to the church. As I conclude this, I leave you with the encouraging words of the Apostle Paul which he shared with the Colossian church: “May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled us to share in the inheritance of the saint in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son.” --Pastor John

EASTER EGGS

Ash Wednesday is March 5, which means it’s time to start thinking about making our Easter eggs again. This year we will start making the candy eggs on Monday, March 2, and continue each Monday through April 14. The eggs will be mixed and shaped starting at 9:00 a.m. and coating and packaging will begin each Monday evening at 6:00 p.m.

Help will be needed both at 9:00 and at 6:00. Mark your calendars NOW and please plan to come out and help make these popular confectioneries

Order forms will soon be available on the table outside of the sanctuary for anyone willing to take orders from relatives, friends or co-workers. If you would like to order just a few eggs, there will be weekly order forms on the bulletin board outside of the sanctuary. Just sign up for the week you would like the delectable eggs.

Sewing Days Making LWR Mission Quilts provides an opportunity for Lutherans in the U.S. to answer God’s call to love and serve our neighbors in need. To those that receive them, they are a tangible symbol of God’s love and compassion.

Knotting workdays will resume on January 14 and 28 if the weather permits! All sewers and non-sewers are invited. There is something for all skills to do. NOTE! The ladies are in need of material to use for the quilts. If you have material left over from sewing projects, old curtains, sheets, etc. bring it in for the ladies to use. And don’t throw out that old mattress pad. Bring it to the church and we can use it for filler for the quilts. It will help to keep someone warm when it is distributed by LWR. Every piece helps.

If you cannot get to a workday, but would still like to work on a quilt at home, or if you would like more information, talk to Judy Mecouch or Georgetta Bowes.

HOPE’S HAVEN

CLOTHING BANK Hope’s Haven is in need of children’s winter coats of all sizes. If you have any to donate, drop them off in the small fellowship hall or church office. If you would like more information, talk to Sue Pantaleo.

My wife and I will probably spend this New Year's Eve like every other year.

In front of the TV set. It's a tradition in our family -- snoring in the new year.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Altar Flower Chart

The 2014 altar flower chart has been posted on the bulletin board outside of the office for use by those who would like to sponsor flowers next year.

Offering Envelopes The 2014 offering envelopes are available in the hallway across from the parlor. They can be picked up at any time.

Coffee Cans Needed We are in need of coffee cans to be used to send altar flowers home following a worship service. If you have any to spare, please drop them off at the kitchen or in the office.

Volunteers Sought We are looking for volunteers to fill the following positions: 1. Baby News Correspondent When a new baby is born to a member of the congregation, the responsibility of the baby news

correspondent is to contact the family and get “vital statistics” and then write a short article for the newsletter. Talk to Margie if you would like to tackle this position.

2. Greeters, Lay Readers, Communion Assistants, Ushers and Sound System Operators. Our list of people willing to do these jobs keeps dwindling. Will you help? Sign up on the

attached “volunteer form” and drop them on Margie’s desk or put them in the offering plate.

Communions Communions for all confirmed members must be recorded in the parish register annually. If you do not commune on a regular basis, we ask that you fill out a communion record card (one per year is all we need) so we know you have communed. The cards are located in the racks on the back of the pews. Cards may be put in the offering plate or handed to an usher.

Informants Wanted We like to publish news about our members in the newsletter, but we need your help to do so. If you know of interesting information about any of our members (youth or adult), i.e. an award or recognition, a funny tale or exciting adventure, please let Margie know about it so we can include it in an issue of Christ’s United’s News & Views.

Do We Have Your E-Mail Address? If you have an e-mail address that you have never given to us or if it has changed, please fill out the following and drop it off on Margie’s desk or give her a call. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name_________________________________________________________________________ E-Mail Address_________________________________________ ________________________ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have a Favorite Hymn? Over the past few years, some of you have been requesting favorite hymns and gospel songs and for that we give many thanks. Because of U.S. copyright laws, we do not have permission to reproduce or copy many of our favorites. You may choose selections from the following hymnals: Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW), Lutheran Book of Worship (LBW) and With One Voice (WOV). We are also permitted to use hymns that are in the “Public Domain”. It’s all very complicated. So, keep your suggestions coming and the Worship and Music Committee will be happy to sort out and use all of your suggestions that copyright laws permit. Please put the title or first line of your song(s) on a piece of paper and give it to Margie, or any member of the Worship and Music Committee (Bev Catherman, Paula Christy, Gary Hackenberg, Judy Mecouch or Barry Spangler). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hymn Request -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Social/Fellowship Request If you have any ideas or suggestions for social/fellowship activities, drop a note on Margie’s desk. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fellowship Events:

Prayer Chain

The Prayer Chain is a group of men and women of Christ’s United who pray for the concerns and requests of Christ’s United’s members and friends. Someone in need of prayer calls the church office and requests to be put on the Prayer Chain. Each member of the Prayer Chain then receives either a phone call or an email notifying them of a prayer request. The prayer chain member receiving the phone call then calls one other person and so on down the list. Those notified by email do not have to pass it on. Would you be willing to pray for someone in need? It is reassuring to know that you are supported by the prayers of others and not alone with your concern. If you would like to be a member of the Prayer Chain, fill out the following and put it in the offering plate or on Margie’s desk. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Building & Ground Needs Do you know of any physical problems (or potential problems) that should be addressed by our property committee? Your insight is important. Maybe you have seen something that no one else has noticed yet. You can talk to Pastor John, any council member or Margie if you know of something that needs attention, or fill out the following and put it on Margie’s desk or in the offering plate. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Building & Ground Needs: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two hunters got a pilot to fly them into the far north for elk hunting. They were quite successful in their venture and

bagged six big bucks. The pilot came back, as arranged, to pick them up. They started loading their gear into the

plane, including the six elk. But the pilot objected and he said, "The plane can only take four of your elk; you will

have to leave two behind." They argued with him; the year before they had shot six and the pilot had allowed them to

put all aboard. The plane was the same model and capacity. Reluctantly, the pilot finally permitted them to put all

six aboard. But when the attempted to take off and leave the valley, the little plane could not make it and they

crashed into the wilderness. Climbing out of the wreckage, one hunter said to the other, "Do you know where we

are?" "I think so," replied the other hunter. I think this is about the same place where we landed last year!"

NOTES OF APPRECIATION “Volunteers are gold”. Volunteers are the most valuable commodities in ministry. Without them, nothing would get done in our churches. We are fortunate to have the kind of dedicated people that we do. Do you know anyone who should be given a pat on the back and a “Thank You” for the contributions they make in and around the church? Let Margie know.

THANK YOU TO… …Lance & Janice Wagner for providing the greens and the Christmas tree that was in our sanctuary this Christmas season. …All the volunteers that helped decorate the church for the holiday season. …Everyone who provided a poinsettia for our Christmas Eve service

We would like to extend to you a very gracious thank you for the generous gift you provided to us over Christmas. In addition to this outpouring of generosity, we want to thank you for the many blessings you bring to us, our church and our community through your ministry and service in Jesus’ name. May God continue to bless you and fill you with grace, mercy and love. --Pastor John, Mindy and family With gratitude in my heart I would like to thank everyone who thought of my family during the holidays with cards and gifts, as well as for your moral support all year long. I am grateful to each and every one of you. --Margie

PLEASE CALL THE CHURCH OFFICE…

…when a member of your family is sick or is admitted to the hospital, so that visits can be made and the proper people notified. …when your phone number is changed, so the church records can be corrected. …when you move—out of town or locally. …when a new baby arrives in your family or in the family of another church member. …when a member of your family leaves home for college or to establish a new residence. …when a new family moves into your neighborhood. …when your class or group plans to have a meeting, so that it can be cleared and placed on the church calendar. …when something good happens to you or your family.

…when you feel the church can assist you in any way.
