I do hope you enjoy this double issue which primarily concentrates on Christmas but includes our usual Community Diary and Regent Centre Listings for both December & January - so worth holding onto until the next issue arrives at the end of January! This issue concentrates on how important it is to our community and local economy to shop here in Christchurch and how much more enjoyable it can be than those crowded shopping centres we often travel milesout of town for. It’s so easy to forget that we have everything we need here right here on our doorstep, so please support local businesses where you can.

I cannot believe that Christchurch Eye is celebrating its First Birthdaythis month! This first year has been a great one, with the magazine and its local content growing and becoming an important part of the community far beyond my expectations. I’d like to Thank my Loving Nan, wonderful Husband and two gorgeous boys forHusband and two gorgeous boys for all their support and encouragement

Just up the road at Crickle Wood, Marie andher sister Lynsey are super-excited abouttheir ‘Christmas goodies’ (73 High Street) and,as ever, Traditions looks gorgeous with itstraditionally decorated trees and more (70 HighStreet).

Speaking of ‘statement trees’, stepping intoThomas & Lucia is like arriving in a country homefor Christmas – you almost want to sit down atone of the beautifully arranged tables (at leastyou can buy the ‘dressings’, to recreate the lookat home!). Owners Sue and Matthew admit tobeing ‘a bit silly about it to be honest, but wereally enjoy decorating the shop. We had over1, 500 fairy lights on the main tree last year!’ (34Bargates).

But we’ll leave the last word toLucy of Wisteria, whose eye fororiginal, stylish yet affordablehomewares is matched by herand Chrissie’s no-pressure,browser-friendly and personalservice. ‘This year, our decorationsfor the tree range from traditional, woodenhanging decorations to stunning vintagebaubles, cute little stockings to glitzy angels.Holly Wreath Christmas Card Holders are prettyand practical and our hand-knitted “Woolideer”make lovely additions to the home!’. The ‘Noel’wooden blocks are really eye-catching, too (93Bargates).

our regular, ‘abouttown’ column by JenniBaden Howard, editor ofnonstopmama.com. anonline glossy magazine, you can now subscribeto nonstopmama’s freeemail updates – delivereddaily to your inbox – soyou’ll never miss a postor one of the website’sgreat, regular giveaways!

Isn’t this, to quote a suitably seasonal song, themost wonderful time of the year in Christchurch?Or one of many, anyway! As the countdown toChristmas begins, the excitement builds andthe town’s shops literally light up with the festivespirit.

Gorgeous window displays beckon us in, fairylights twinkling, full of lovely gift ideas and “littlesomethings” begging to be added to our ownwish lists! Of course, preparing for the Christmasisn’t without its stresses (hooray for a ‘medicinal’hot chocolate stop at Cheese & Alfie’s!).

How to bring a little of the Christmas magiccreated by the town’s wonderful gifts andinteriors shops into our own homes? As Traceyat Lavender & Bay stressed when I asked whatinspired her this season, in these budget-conscious times, the simplicity of a single, trulyspecial decoration or ornament will really help toset the mood for the festive season. Her lovely‘Noel’ cushion, handmade locally, is a greatexample! Tracey has an absolute passion for thehandmade (locally, whenever possible) and fairtrade (2 Wick Lane).

A stone’s throw (well, almost) from the PrioryChurch, Ye Olde Eight Bells is not only a treasuretrove of collectibles – what could be moreseasonal than the limited edition Lilliput Lanemodel of the Priory Church in the snow? – butoffers an array of festively-patterned ribbonsand trimmings by the metre. ‘The ribbons arealways popular for decorating Christmas cakesand displaying cards,’ says Anita (16 ChurchStreet). Check out the great new website, too, atyeoldeightbellsgiftshop.co.uk).

JINGLE TILLS?By Julie RadcliffeOpening in time for theChristmas rush we haveThe Curiosity Shop,High Street and BellaTe on Barrack Road, but how can shops in atown like Christchurchcompete with the out-of-town centres, such asCastlepoint?

With the country tightening its collective belt, maybeit’s time to return to a traditional Christmas, awayfrom the huge consumer spend fest of recent years.Thoughtful, practical and unique small presents areoften appreciated for the thought that has goneinto the purchase. Shops in Christchurch are wellplaced to provide such gifts.

As well as High Street, Church Street, Wick Laneand Castle Street, Bargates is brilliant for smallindependents. Bookends is giving Amazon arun for its money with competitive prices, andinteresting games and gifts, and what aboutplaces such as the Priory Gift Shop for somethingdifferent?

Christchurch has its very own ‘out of town’ stores. There’s a great toyshop at St Catherine’s Parade, plus a florist. Fairmile itself has computer shopsand much more. Barrack Road has a range ofindependents, where product knowledge andcustomer service are second to none and don’tforget Highcliffe.

There are national chains where bigger giftscan be obtained through Argos, Boots and WHSmith plus the retail parks in Barrack Road andSomerford Road. Christchurch Chamber of Tradehas published an excellent guide listing around 700outlets and businesses in Christchurch - copies areavailable from the Information Centre.

Another good thing about Christmas shopping inChristchurch is that the Council offers free parkingin the lead up to Christmas. This, along with thewide variety of cafes and restaurants, can makeshopping a delight rather than the crowd-jostlingchore it has become.

So, now that the Christmas lights are on, why notshop local in Christchurch this Christmas?

Christmas already! Can’t believe 2010 isnearly over and we’reheading into 2011!Christmas is sucha beautiful time ofyear when everyoneis gathered togetherto enjoy food, drink, laughter, presents andlaughter, presents andfun & where we recallthe past year and look forward to the next.the past year and look forward to the next.

As a family, we have always had a very traditionalChristmas; whether it’s enjoying a turkey dinner,Christmas crackers, visiting church, giving andreceiving presents or being with all the family; it’salways an exciting and enjoyable time. Growingup, of course my brother and I loved the presentopening. We would wake up way too early, rushto the end of our beds to see that Santa had filledour stockings and hurry downstairs to see morepresents under the tree. I loved seeing that Santahad enjoyed my mince pie and the reindeers had anibble of my carrot.

One year, my parents made Christmas a whole lotmore exciting. I remember being about seven yearsold and opening my eyes to pink toilet roll wrappedaround my bedroom and leading out to the hallway. They had made a trail all round the house whichI had to follow. My brother had the same and wewere so excited when it led to two little Go-Kartsin the garage! Another year, all our presents werehidden all around the house. We had clues whereto find them in places like the washing machine andin the fridge. It was truly fantastic!

However, more recently, I have been fortunateenough to experience Christmas in differentcountries on skiing holidays. I learnt to ski whenI was ten years old and feel so lucky to get theopportunity to enjoy the sport and the spectacularmountainous views and pure white snow make myChristmas very special.

So whether you enjoy being with your family orfriends, away or at home this Christmas, lets finish2010 with laughter and fun and start 2011 with abang!

Last month’s article on the Pit Site showed thevulnerability of thatched buildings. Another Fire ina thatched building in Bridge Street in 1859 led toa thatched building in Bridge Street in 1859 led to a historical misunderstanding that is still misleading people today. What is the misunderstanding?-“That the Filer Knapper Building in Bridge Street was the head-quarters of the Custom Service in Christchurch.”

August 1859 had been a dry month and on a Wednesday night early in September a fire broke out in the thatch near to the chimney of a cottage in Bridge Street belonging to Mr G. Brown, (opposite to where Prezzo’s restaurant is today). The fire took hold quickly and had soon spread to the adjoining cottages, also thatched. These were residences of Eli Troke, Mr G Butler, a watchmaker, and a long standing resident, Mr J. Everleigh Mason. The Town fire engine was quickly summoned. This was followed by the Barracks fire engine, which was accompanied by a large body of soldiers from E Troop Royal Horse Artillery. It was soon obvious that the buildings were doomed and efforts began to prevent the fire spreading by spraying adjoining properties with water.

Before the fire in 1859 the buildings had been leased by the Jeans family, a well established local family whose sons in the past had filled the position of Mayor on no less than ten occasions. Joshua Stevens Jeans had also held the post of Supervisor of the Riding Officers for the Custom Service based in Christchurch. He was dismissed from the service under a ‘cloud’ in 1786. After the fire the site was purchased by Abraham Pike who was a Postmaster and grocer and lived opposite. This family also had links to the Custom Service. Abraham Pike’s father had been a supervisor of Customs at Christchurch in the early 1800’s. It was Abraham Pike junior who built the three story building that we now know today as Filer and Knapper, Accountants. It was a speculative adventure and when it was finished it was leased for five years to the “English Joint Stock Bank” who controlled the South Eastern Banking Co.

The bank opened in 1864 with a claimed security of one million pounds. In 1866 Abraham Pike’s investment turned sour when the Bank closed after accumulating a lot of debt. Three years later there were reports in the Christchurch Times that conspiracy and fraud were factors in the bank’s collapse. With an empty building on his hands Abraham or members of his family moved in and

stored their belongings in the loft. Amongst thestored their belongings in the loft. Amongst the belongings was the Custom Officer’s Journal that had been diligently compiled by his father when he was serving as Supervisor. The Journal, when it was found some eighty years later, together with confusion over the two Abraham Pikes, was regarded as proof that the building had been the head-quarters of the Custom Service in Christchurch.

This completely spurious history of the Filer and Knapper building has appeared in at least four publications and now has been reproduced on a number of web sites. As a result of the work done by Allen White, one of the Towns most diligent local historians, readers of the Christchurch Eye now know the truth.
