Editor’s Letter

Welcome to the September edition of Christchurch Eye.

Well, I hope you all had an enjoyable summer holiday and with school starting a new term, I hope that you are now getting back into the swing of routine. Good luck to all those that are starting out at a new school (including my youngest boy - I think I’m more nervous than he is!). Brogan, our teen columnist has a few tips to help you be prepared for that big step in your lives - turn to page 20 to find out more.

Thank you to all of those that have given such wonderful feedback on our new glossy cover, so glad you like it! We’ve brought back our Lateral Thinking and Mindbender Puzzles after many requests; see, we do listen to what you want!

In our August edition, within our Business Column, it was stated that Zooma of Bargates had closed. I would like to point out that this is not the case and they are actually under new management with some exciting new changes underway, check out pages 30 to 31 and take a look for yourselves. Julie and I would both like to apologise for this error.

I’d like to wish Julie Ratcliffe, our business columnist, a Happy Birthday this month, I hope you have a wonderful day!

Don’t forget to keep those suggestions coming, we always like to hear what you have to say and to make the magazine as interesting a read as possible for you. Happy Reading!

If you play a wind or percussion instrument and are looking for an exciting new group to play in, the Christchurch Music Centre (CMC) is the place for you !

CMC meets on Saturday mornings at Twynham School during term time and welcomes players aged 8-18(ish!) of all abilities, from new starters to experienced players, with an emphasis on fun, developing confidence in playing and learning from each other. The group is split into two bands – with Junior Band playing the easier tunes and Senior Band playing longer and more complex pieces. Band favourites include Wallace and Gromitt, The Simpsons and The Blues Brothers.

Hannah, age 14, has been playing in the band for five years now and says “ It’s really relaxed and you learn a lot about playing in a

band as well as making new friends.” Austin, age 11, joined last September and says “It’s fun and there’s a tuck shop!”

There are opportunities throughout the year to play in concerts at venues such as Christchurch Priory and the Regent Centre. We also play outside, most recently at Brownsea Island, and you have probably seen - and heard – us in Saxon Square at Christmas time playing in the Magic Moments festival.

First rehearsal back after the summer holidays will be Saturday 17th September at Twynham School. Junior band rehearse from 9-10am and Senior band 10:30 – 12:30.For more info contact [email protected] or just come along and see for yourself !!

There has been a church hall on our site, in Jumpers Road, since 1947 offering a community facility to many groups in the area. The present hall was built in 1961 and is of a pre-cast concrete construction. It cost £3,750 to build and was officially opened on Sunday 17th September 1961 by the then Mayor of Christchurch, Alderman Miss E.L.Padwick, a member of St George’s church. On that occasion, the then Bishop of Southampton, Rt.Rev K.E.N. Lamplugh M.A. dedicated the hall for the future use of all within the local community. A small annexe was added 2 years later but was replaced by a larger structure in 1995.

The hall has been well used by various groups over the years. Some of the groups were connected with the Church but others were not. There has been a playgroup here for many years, Guides, Brownies and Rainbows have all met here, Drama Groups, Keep fit, Karate, Badminton, St George’s Wives, Dancing Classes, Machine Knitting,Japanese language class, Slimming World and probably

several others of which I have little or no record. We hire out the hall for children’s parties and use it for a variety of Church fundraising events.

On September 25th we will be celebrating the Golden Anniversary of the present church hall as a community facility. There will be a special service at 9.45am followed by a buffet lunch in the hall. We will have the Rev. Dr Peter Roach, Archdeacon of Bournemouth, Fr Chris Mann, Priest in Charge of the Parish and The Mayor, Mrs Sue Spittle with us to recreate the official opening as it was 50 years ago.

If anyone has any memories of the hall, either by running a group or being part of the community, we would love to hear from you. Any correspondence should be sent to: St George’s Hall c/o The Parish Office, Quay Road, Christchurch, BH23 1BU.

I know readers like to hear about businesses coming and going,

but in my last column erroneously listed Zooma, Bargates as having closed. I would like to apologise for any problems this may have caused. In fact, I am happy to report that Zooma has welcomed Angela Simmons, who also owns the nearby Studio Fifty Six, as a business partner and Director to existing Company Director, Joanna Curtis and there are plans for improvements and expansion.

I also thought that the recent planning application by Pizza Express would be contentious when in fact it is the plans for a 68-bed Travelodge which have found opposition. Understandably, our excellent local B&Bs have concerns. It is here, for example, that businesspeople on their travels tend to stay when visiting our area, so their trade could suffer.

Some are arguing that a Travelodge would draw noisy stag nights, yet the town has few late-night establishments that would attract these. Even if it did attract such groups, would they necessarily be trouble-makers?

I was approached about my views, and those of the Chamber of Trade, which supports the Travelodge application. Maybe someone from the group opposing the plans should attend the next Chamber meeting, as it will be interesting to hear why they are against it. Having spoken to many people, the majority see huge benefits, not only to tourism but also to the shops, restaurants and coffee shops, plus seeing the former health centre renovated and occupied at last.

To let the Planning Committee hear your views, write to the case officer, Mark Taylor, at the Civic Offices, Bridge Street, Christchurch BH23 1AZ, before 15 September.

In the meantime, Travelodge or not, we hope that the summer brings many visitors to enjoy our town and use our local businesses, new and old.

The 2nd of September sees an evening of Shopping and Relaxation at the Mudeford Wood Community Centre, Pipers Drive, Christchurch. This event was previously so successful it left people asking for more and when it was going to be held again. The organisers have finally got a date sorted and this time, they say "It will be a much bigger and brighter venue without the time restrictions" This means you can be pampered for a whole evening!

With many different companies coming together, there is sure to be something for everyone, from candles to clothing - Tarot reading to threading. You will be spoilt for choice! Any of the therapies on offer will be free or for a very small charge, so you can make your money go a very long way and try therapies you wouldn't want to pay full shop price for.

All the money raised will be going to Christchurch Youth Drama, a very special group which encourage Children into Drama to keep them off the streets.

So, ladies, come on - lets support a very worthwhile local charity and spoil ourselves at the same time!

Event runs from 7pm till 11pm - 2nd September 2011

The definition of distraction burglary is when one burglar distracts the occupant of a house so that the other can quickly gain access and steal items.

What the definition does not do is describe the devastation this can leave behind for those who have become victims. However astute you are, it can happen to anyone of any age. It is the elderly and vulnerable who are particularly targeted and an incident of this kind can leave them with their confidence shattered and afraid to open the door.

As a family member, friend, carer or neighbour, you can really help the potentially vulnerable people you know from becoming a victim of this unpleasant crime.

Houses and gardens that are not cared for often indicate someone who is struggling to maintain their property and it is these places that are being sized up by distraction burglars.

If your friend or family member is in this position, you can help by offering to mow the lawn and tidy their garden or help get the house painted. You really can make a difference in preventing this crime.

Chains on the door are essential and everyone should use a chain to answer the door if it is not someone they know. So often elderly people have come from a trusting generation where doors were left open and they are lonely and welcome a chat. These burglars are expert at offering a friendly word to distract your attention. Always make sure your back door and windows are shut and locked if you answer the front door.

Everyone should have a good quality chain and locks on their door and windows and don’t let anyone into the house unless you are sure they are genuine. Always ask for identification and then check the telephone number from the phone book before allowing anyone in. A genuine official won’t mind waiting while you phone to check they are in your area.

The Water Board does not exist any more, but the name is often used as a means of entry.

Tell your family and friends never to do business on the

doorstep or agree to work being done for cash with no documents or time to consider. (You legally have 10 days to reconsider). Cash stored in the house is a bad idea – so encourage the people you know to put money in the bank or building society. If they are some distance away – offer to drive them there when they need to withdraw money.

Elderly people are sometimes taken to their bank or building society by distraction burglars to withdraw large sums of money to repair a roof that does not need doing or tarmac a driveway. Most of the time they promise to return to do the work the next day and then take the money and run.

Regular phone calls and visits make all the difference and you can help remind people of these tips, particularly if they forget things easily. A notice by the front door can remind them to use the chain or check an identity.

Finally, Dorset Police is here to help. If you feel that you are being targeted by distraction burglars or feel threatened, dial 999 straight away. We have successfully returned thousands of pounds to victims because we have been notified in time.If you have been a victim in the past - don’t feel foolish – it can happen to anyone. Call us on our non emergency number 01202/01305 22 22 22 and report it and you may save someone else from being a victim.

Tear out the notice opposite to place by the door or hand to someone who is vulnerable.

I can’t believe September has come round so quickly. For

most people my age this means going back to school. Whether you are just starting secondary school, climbing up into Sixth Form, going to a new college or leaving home for University - here are my top 10 tips for being successful.

1. Get organised: Being in the right frame of mind will help you from the start of the year through to the end; this means buying plenty of folders and dividers for each subject, keeping them separate.2. Books: Get all your relevant books and revision guides at the very start of the year so you’re always one step ahead.3. Pencil case: Stock up with plenty of pens and pencils; a good thing to always have is a highlighter, they come in handy when trying to remember things! Don’t buy lots of expensive pens, you’ll only loose them.4. Uniform/Clothes: Make sure you have all the right uniform in time. You don’t want mum dragging you to the school shop on your day off! If you’re going to sixth form or college, buy comfortable items like a good pair of jeans and a jumper for the winter.5. Shoes: buy a comfortable pair that won’t give you blisters. A good tip is to walk around the house to wear them in.6. Bag: Similarly, you want something durable to carry all your books in and big enough to fit everything!7. Studying at Home: find a good area you can study at home. Whether it’s a desk in your bedroom or your kitchen table, make space to work.8. Homework: We all hate it, but it honestly helps. Get it done as soon as it is set, as leaving it to last minute never works well.9. Sleep: Go to bed at a sensible time the night before so your not falling asleep on your desk. Eat a good breakfast; it’s important to keep your energy levels up for concentration.10: Have Fun: School is a huge part of our lives, so just enjoy it! Don’t be afraid of meeting new people, remember we are all in the same boat.

Good Luck! Brogan x

Christchurch Priory Church

Throughout 2011, these Christchurch Eye Local History articles are featuring a few of the historic landmarks that can be

seen on a stroll along Convent Walk, which celebrated its centenary in June.

The town’s most prominent landmark, the Priory Church, is visible from virtually every step along Convent Walk. The present church was begun in about 1094 by the Norman-born cleric Ranulf Flambard, who was a financial advisor to King William I and possibly the mastermind behind the Domesday Book. However, his influence and power greatly increased under King William II, who granted him authority over the Saxon minster at Christchurch. The Christchurch Priory Cartulary records that Flambard subsequently ‘arranged to tear down to the foundations the church of the Holy Trinity, Twynham, and build a better one’.

A local legend says that the canons first tried to build their new church about two miles to the north on the summit of St Catherine’s Hill, now a nature reserve. However, everything the canons achieved during the day was pulled down overnight and all their building materials were mysteriously transferred to a ridge of land between the Rivers Stour and Avon. The canons persisted in their plan but were repeatedly confounded, and so finally decided that Divine Will was dictating that their new church should be erected where it now stands. Although this story is often applied to Flambard’s church, by the late 11th century the site between the rivers had been a Saxon settlement and home to a community of canons for hundreds of years, so it seems more likely that the legend relates to a church constructed by the early Christian missionaries. Bishop Birinus had landed at Southampton in 634 to begin the conversion of the pagan Saxons, and some thirty years earlier Pope Gregory I had sanctioned the appropriation of pagan sites for Christian use. Might the legend refer to local campaigners sabotaging an attempt to usurp their sacred hilltop? It is interesting to consider that, if the legend is based in history and the missionary canons had persevered, Christchurch might now be a hilltop town like Shaftesbury.

Although the canons were obliged to build their church between the rivers, by the start of the 14th century they had succeeded in constructing a chapel dedicated to St Catherine upon the hill, then known

as Richedon. This translates as ‘great hill’, perhaps to distinguish it from Lytildoun, or ‘little hill’, across the Stour to the south-west. The devout St Catherine of Alexandria was condemned to be executed upon a spiked wheel, and in iconography she is often depicted holding a sun-like ‘Catherine wheel’. The St Catherine’s Hill at Winchester, Chale on the Isle of Wight, and Chapel Hill at Abbotsbury, also had medieval chapels dedicated to the saint, leading to the suspicion that St Catherine was chosen to supersede a pagan sun goddess once worshiped on these Wessex hilltops.

The Friends of St Catherine’s Hill are hosting a History & Archaeology Day on Sunday 18th September from 10.30am to 4.00pm. The event will take place near the concrete water reservoirs on the top of the hill and present a range of activities promoting the rich history of the site. For more details about this and other events on St Catherine’s Hill contact Robin Harley on 01425 272479 or [email protected].

These take place at Christchurch Junior School in Clarendon Rd, on the first Tuesday of the month.

Zooma opened in January 2009 with a unique concept combining hairdressing, beauty, parties and childcare services in a single location.

With Zooma now under a new management team, what changes can you expect to see? Well, the concept remains intact; however there have already been some cosmetic changes made and more in the pipeline.

An additional beauty room has been added to the salon. The hair stations at the front of the shop have been upgraded with new chairs, mirrors & some creative storage space for clients’ bags, coats & cutting gowns.

Compared with some soft play centre’s, the Zooma play zone is not huge but that is why it is great for under 5s - you can always see them without having to go crawling about after them. It is very clean (in fact you can smell the cleanliness) and safe for under 5’s. As a parent, you can sit and enjoy a coffee or have a hair or beauty treatment whilst the kids play.

One of the changes that I am sure will appeal to lots of mums is the new childcare service. Zooma can now offer a crèche facility which means that if you prefer to have your child looked after in a more structured way that simply free play in the soft play area; they have a qualified child care assistant who is first aid trained and CRB checked who can look after your child or children for up to 3 hours whilst you are in the salon having your treatments.

I was lucky enough to be invited to observe a party at Zooma one Saturday afternoon. The excited birthday girl and her guests arrived in their party dresses and started the celebrations by being ushered over to a fabulous chocolate fondue with sweets, biscuits (and I have to say even some fruit for the health conscious). Accompanying the fondue were champagne glasses filled with pink bubbly, which I was assured was totally alcohol free!

Whilst some of the girls enjoyed a full make over involving hair styling, make up and nail art, the others waited their turn in true party style, enjoying a dance competition. The atmosphere in the shop was fabulous - mums and dads are having fun watching their kids having a great time.

Zooma has had mixed publicity in the past, however it does what it says on the tin – it is a salon for adults and children which has a soft play area and has children’s pamper parties at the weekend. The salon and play zone is clean and decorated in a simple and contemporary style. Prices for all treatments are very reasonably priced and special offers can be found on the Zooma facebook page. If you don’t have kids and prefer a more tranquil experience then weekdays are the best time for this. However if you enjoy seeing the electric atmosphere of the parties, then Saturdays are the days to visit Zooma.

The opening hours will shortly be changing to incorporate some late opening hours for those of us who need to arrange our appointments outside of normal office hours.

Soft play areaThe under five’s soft play area is a low level play zone with a ball pit, soft slide and separate baby area. In addition to the soft play there are books, toys & a role play section. The play area can also be hired out for children’s soft play parties for those under 5. The price of the play area is very reasonable at £3.00 for an hours play which also includes an adults drink. Additional children just

Coffee ShopThere is a large seating area (highchairs available) where customers can sit and relax with children and friends. This area is ideal for anti-natal groups or toddler groups as there is adequate space and it is situated by the soft play area. Coffees are priced at £1.80.

PartiesPamper parties are the Zooma speciality. Girls indulge in chocolate fondues and kids bubbly whilst being transformed with new hair, nails & make up designs. There are also hot and cold buffet style food options and entertainment. The staff are friendly & attentive to the needs of the children. The styles are fun and girlie and not too adult in image.

HairThe Zooma hair salon caters for adults and children. The colour range and after care is by Paul Mitchell. Zooma offer affordable treatments and styles ranging from a simple cut to complete transformations such as a full head of hair extensions. For the little people who are a bit adverse to hair dressing, Zooma has a car seat for them to drive in whilst having their hair cut or even bring along their favorite DVD for them to watch.

BeautyZooma has a wide range of beauty treatments ranging from Minx and Shellac to individual eyelash extensions, waxing, threading and massage. There are two beauty rooms as well as beauty areas within the open salon. Zooma prides itself for always researching the latest beauty treatments & style trends to keep clients looking in tip top condition.

£1.00 each for an hour. There is also a crèche facility priced at £3.00 per hour per child for a maximum of 3 hours whilst the parent is in the salon.

The winners of the annual Christchurch in Bloom competition have been decided with a number of new entrants walking away with top prizes.

First-time entrant Joanne Croakes from Avon Cottages in Winkton won the Best Frontage category and was also judged to be the overall Best New Entry while another first-timer, Angie Williams, won the Best Wildlife Garden category.

Christchurch Harbour Hotel came away with the Best Commercial Frontage Award while the Judges’ Special Award went to the Macmillan Unit at Christchurch Hospital.

Barrie Andrews - Bodowen Road, Burton

The new category of Best Amateur Food Producer was won by David Nash for his allotment in Walkford and the Best Young Gardeners were Sophie and Jamie Sherwood from Dorset Road in Somerford.

In order to encourage new entrants, all of last year’s winners were judged in one category and the Best of Last Year’s Best was won by Barrie Andrews from Bodowen Road in Burton.

In the School Grounds category, the All Round Excellence Award went to Burton Primary School with other Awards going to Mudeford Community Infants School, Priory Primary School and Highcliffe St Mark Primary School.

Ann Simon, Tourism Manager at Christchurch Council, said: “We had a revamp of the awards this year and it has paid dividends with a lot more new entrants coming forward. As usual the standard of entries was very impressive and our judges, Rose De Souza and Janet Roberts, had a difficult time deciding on the winners.

“We would like to thank everyone who contributes to making Christchurch look so colourful during the summer months and we congratulate all the winners.

“We would also like to thank our sponsors: Splinters restaurant, The Manor, The Captain’s Club, The Kings and Christchurch Harbour Hotel, all of who are providing prizes for the winners, and Eco Composting, who gave compost vouchers to the first 50 entrants.”wThe Awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held at The Manor on 15 September.
