Christmas Star- Fabric Ornament pattern

Size of the star

To make the star you need 8 squares. You can use squares in any size.

The size of the star will be (2 x size of the square). If you use 3’’ squares, your star will

measure 6’’.

For one star, you need 8 fabric squares and 8 fusible web interfacing, in the same size as the

fabric squares. These are brands of fusible web: Heat’N Bond, Soft Fuse, Wonder Under,

Vliesofix/Bondaweb, Steam a Seam 2.

Fuse the fusible web to the back of your fabric.

This is a great pattern for scraps.

If you have bigger pieces of fabric and interfacing,

first fuse fusible web to the back of the fabric then

cut your squares.

Remove the paper backing from your fabric

squares.

Take one of the paper squares and fold it on both diagonals, as shown.

Using a pointed tool (I used a pencil), punch a

little hole in the center of the paper. You will use this paper as a stencil to find and

mark the center of each fabric piece.

Place the paper stencil over the back of your

fabric pieces, aligning its edges with the edges of the fabric.

Using a fine marker, lightly mark the center on fabric. Make sure the dot is not visible on the

right side of the fabric.

Repeat for all the squares.

Transfer all the squares to your ironing board.

Fold the corners of the fabric into the center, as shown below. Do it one corner at a time and

press with the iron. Make sure you touch with the iron only the right side of the fabric- the wrong side is sticky.

Then fold one of the edges into the center, as show.

Repeat with the opposite edge.

Repeat for all the squares.

You turned the square into a kite shape.




Take two pieces and stitched them together-

see the yellow marking, Start sewing from the center.

Backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam.

The edge of the top piece must be aligned over the center line of the bottom piece.

Make this stitching as invisible as you can! You could use monofilament

(invisible) thread. Use a sharp needle in your machine – I

used Schmetz Jeans Needles #100/16.

In the same way, add the next piece- always on top of the previous piece.

Repeat…




… until you have added all the

pieces. Now you have to attach the first

piece to the last piece.

To do this, slide the first piece on top

of the last piece (see the yellow arrow) and stitch as in the previous

steps.

Your piece with all eight pieces attached

should look like this.




The last step: optional but useful! Stitch on the center of the star as show- see the yellow marking.

You will secure all these folds to the back of the star, making it nice and flat-

see the image below.

Your star is finished.

NOTES

1. You can make stars with only one fabric or with how many fabrics you want.

2. If the center of your star is not perfect, just cover it with a button or a ribbon flower or some kind of

decorative item. You can’t do that if your stars will be used as coasters, though.
