1. Hoop your fabric and backing.2. Sew the pattern/placement. PHOTO 13. Place a piece of appliqué fabric over the pattern/placement so that it is completely covered.4. Sew the trim stitch/tackdown.5. Stabilizer:• Usewater-solublestabilizerorfilmwater-solublestabilizer.

Handy Hints:For Stiffer Lace:• DONOTrinseawayallofthestabilizerfora“stiffer”lace.Notethatthethreadmayappearashadedarkerifstabilizerisnotremovedcompletely.

• Ifyouhappentowashtoomuchout,easilyre-stiffenbydilutingsomestabilizerscrapsinwateranddippingtheiteminthesolution.

For Very Soft Lace:• Cutawayexcessstabilizer.Removeremainingstabilizerbyrinsingunderwarmrunningwateruntilalltracesofthestabilizeraregone.Note:Iflaceshouldbecometoolimptoworkwith,dissolvestabilizerscrapsinwarmwaterandapplytothelace.

Drying Lace:• Thelacelooksbestwhenlefttodrycompletely.Laylacepiecewithrightsidedowntodry.Thiswillminimizethetendencyforthelacetocurl.Besuretoflattenthepieceoutentirelyandallowampletimetodry.

Handy Hints:For 3D Lace Projects:• Adhere2layersofheavyweightstabilizertobackoffabricswithtemporaryadhesivespraybeforehoopingorplacingdownfortackdownandcutinplace.Thisgivesfabricamorerigidstructure.

• Rinsingoutlacewithveryhotwatercancausewrinklesinsomefabricsafterithasbeenembroidered.Topreventthis,pre-shrinkcottonfabricbywashingitinwarmwateranddryingitinadryer.

• Ifitembecomestoolimptoworkwith,irontheappliquépiecesonthewrongsidewhileapplyingspraystarch.Afterironing,sprayagainwithstarchandallowtodrycompletely.Thiswillstiffenthelacepiecesnicelyandaidinconstruction.

• Apairoftweezers,hemostats,stilettooratinycrochethookcanbeextremelyhelpfulwheninsertingthebuttonettesintotheeyelets.(PleaseseeDiagram 1forexplanationof“buttonette”and“eyelet”.)

• Insertthetipofthetweezers,hemostatsorcrochethookintotheeyelet,graspthebuttonetteandpullthroughtheeyelet.Orastilettocouldbeusedtopushthebuttonettethroughtheeyelet.

Instructions for Schoolhouse Construction

Follow the General Freestanding Lace Guidelines and Cut in Place Appliqué Instructions and stitch the fifteen pieces required as listed in the summary above.NOTE: The base of the building has a hole meant to contain a battery operated tea light candle.

School Bell Assembly• Assemble the school bell (12518-09) by inserting the buttonettes into

the eyelets to make a circle. Insert the separate piece (clapper) into the center of the bell and pull through to the outside top. Photos 1 & 2

• Assemble the bell tower by inserting the buttonettes of the bell tower ceiling (12518-08) into the eyelets of the bell tower walls (12518-06) on three sides. Insert the assembled school bell into the center of the bell tower ceiling. Photo 3

• Continue assembling the bell tower walls by inserting the last buttonette of the bell tower ceiling into the eyelet of the bell tower wall and inserting the buttonettes of the bell tower wall into the eyelets of the opposite side of the bell tower wall forming a square.

• Attach the bell tower roof pieces together by inserting the buttonettes of one side into the eyelets of the other side. Photo 4

• Assemble the bell tower roof to the bell tower wall piece by inserting the buttonettes of the tower wall

into the eyelets toward the bottom of the roof pieces. The buttonettes will be pulled up through the roof pieces. The bell tower is complete. Set aside. Photo 5

Assembly of School House Walls and Roof• Attach the front wall eave (12518-10) to the front wall (12518-01) by inserting the three

buttonettes of the eave into the three eyelets of the front wall above the door. Photo 6• Attach the front wall to the side wall by inserting the three buttonettes along the right

side of the front wall into the three eyelets of the left wall. Repeat this process to attach the back wall and right wall to form the schoolhouse structure. Photo 7

• Connect right roof (12518-04) and left roof (12518-05) together by inserting buttonettes from the left side of one piece into the eyelets from the right side of the other piece.

• Attach the constructed roof to the schoolhouse wall structure by inserting the buttonettes along the top of each wall section into the coordinating eyelets located toward the bottom of each roof piece. The buttonettes will be pulled up through the roof pieces. The bell tower will be toward the front of the schoolhouse. Photo 8

• Attach the bell tower to the front of the schoolhouse roof by inserting the four buttonettes along the bottom of the bell tower into the coordinating eyelets located on either side of the front of the roof structure. NOTE: It is easier to reach in from the inside with a pair of alligator clamps and pull the buttonettes through the eyelets. Photo 9

Attach Schoolhouse Floor to Walls• Connect the floor (12518-11) to all walls by inserting the floor

buttonettes through the centered eyelets.

Assembly of Schoolhouse Well• Attach the well floor (12518-14) to the well walls (12518-12) by inserting the

buttonettes of the floor into the eyelets of the walls to create a circle. Attach the two buttonettes of the well wall into the corresponding eyelets of the other side of the well wall. Photo 10

• Attach the well roof (12518-13) to the well wall by inserting the four buttonettes of the wall pieces into the four corresponding eyelets on the roof. The buttonettes will be pulled up through the roof pieces. Photo 11
