A Reading from the Holy Gospel !according to John!

Glory to Christ our Saviour.!!In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might

believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light. The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. (John bore witness to him, and cried, "This was he of whom I said, `He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me.'") And from his fulness have we all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known. !!

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: We give thanks to God for the experience of worship at our recently held christmas services !The eternal message of hope and peace would have been located within the biblical texts and the various hymns and prayers of the season. !The opportunity for family get-togethers and the meetings of friends, neighbors and associates

would have brought joy to our lives as we shared a meal around the table. !We are aware that the original christmas story broke into a world in which persons faced hardship and difficulty and so this Christmas we would have sought through our gift and hamper ministry to bring cheer to those who have nowhere else to turn for help. !The christmas narrative is renewed each year as we reflect on it in while making our communion at the altar. We know of the deep doctrinal meaning of those narratives, especially that of St. John 1: 1- 18. !This narrative tells of God’s love for us to the extent that God becomes a human being as the hymn writer says of two-fold substance both human and divine. this gives much cause for rejoicing. !Valerie Schultz reminds us in a recent article that the lyrics to “O Holy Night,” about how “the weary world rejoices,” is a christmas invitation to be joyful even in this weary world. !It is that call to rejoice that sees us through the most bitter experience and the most fearsome uncertainty even as we seek solutions to the economic problems facing Barbados. !Quite recently I was introduced to a book entitled “The Price of Civilization: Reawakening American Virtue and Prosperity” written by economist Jeffrey Sachs. (Yes, I do not only read theology books) Speaking of the USA he states what may be true of us as in Barbados as well when he writes that at

the root of America’s economic crisis lies a moral crisis. !He goes on to say that “Without restoring an ethos of social responsibility, there can be no meaningful and sustained economic recovery”. !As we make efforts to get the economy right, let us also ensure that other parts of the package are put in order as well if we are to avoid similar situations in the future. !We have to look at the total person, spiritual, religious, social, political and determine together the long term trends and what is it exactly that we want for our country. !We pray that as the season of Christmas continues that the spirit of good will and moderation will prevail among us. !

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13 !

The Confirmation Class for 2014 will begin on Saturday February 8. The class runs each Saturday from 9:00am - 10:00am until November. Registration begins in January.!!

The Daily Offering

A morning devotion: !God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with the Heart of Jesus, who continues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. 

May the Holy Spirit, Who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to your love.  With Mary, the mother of our Lord and the Church, I pray for peace and goodwill among nations and people Amen.
