Woodbine Elementary serves students in pre-kindergartenthrough fifth grade. The enrollment for the school year 2010-11is 401. This is a decrease from the previous year’s enrollment of 406. The enrollment by grade level is listed below.

Woodbine Elementary has a principal

and one assistant principal. Supportpersonnel include a guidance

counselor, media specialist, and speech

and language pathologist. There are29 full-time teachers.

The mission of the Woodbine School LibraryMedia Program is to ensure that students areeffective users of ideas and information.

The library media center strives to providethe school community with a wide range ofmaterials that will encourage growth inknowledge, establish a life-long love ofreading, and foster information literacy.

The Woodbine Elementary School Media Centeris open from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. everyschool day. Students must come with apurpose for learning with their library folder.

Faculty members are welcome to browse andpick up materials in person or notify a librarianof needs via email, phone or studentmessenger. Teachers can still enter the libraryafter hours through the side door.

We use the Accelerated Reading program school wideand reward our top readers each month with a freebook. At the end of the year, students are recognized

for individual reading awards at each grade level.

By removing the end shelf on the left after weeding of books, onecould move the reference area in the inner section and add twotables and put smaller reference shelves on the two ends.

In the existing floor plan,problem areas include acramped reference area, notenough comfortable seating,only a small reading area for

kindergarten classes, and notenough computers.Since I created this floor plan,more of the comfortableseating has been removed.

Move reference area to the main part of thelibrary. Remove a shelf and add short shelves forreference books with tables in between.Make the old reference area into the viewing andpresenting area with theater seating and floor

mat.Make the original bookroom a computer lab byopening up this area. The bookroom will beadded behind the reference area, where theycurrently keep outdated supplies, such as

overheads and broken printers.Add more comfortable seating by removing around table.

In the new floor plan, thereference area has been movedto the inner part of the libraryand a shelf has been removed.We have over 30,000 books and

the media clerk has said sheneeds to weed out the collection.The book room has been openedup and an 8 station computerlab has been put in place.A new read aloud area has been

added and smartboard put inplace for viewing ebooks andpresentations.More comfortable seating hasbeen added.

 The local school superintendent shallappoint a system media contact person toserve as liaison to the department.

Each school shall have a media centerstaffed by media personnel and shall develop

processes to implement system media policyand procedures.

A plan for flexibly scheduled media center access forstudents and teachers in groups or as individualssimultaneously throughout each instructionalday. Accessibility shall refer to the facility, the staff,and the resources and shall be based on instructionalneed.

A media committee that makes recommendationsand decisions related to planning, operation,evaluation and improvement of the mediaprogram. This committee shall annually evaluate

media services and develop a multi-year media planfor budget and services priorities.

An elementary media committee is formed at thebeginning of each school year. Members includea volunteer teacher from each grade level. Thecommittee will meet throughout the year todiscuss library issues, programs, and activities. In

the event of challenged material, one parent, oneprincipal, and one faculty member that isnonrepresentative of a classroom will join thegroup to review the complaint and take action.The media committee members should be shown

in the school media handbook. Our school has amedia handbook, but it is not readily available toothers.

Students may check out two (2) books at the time fora two (2) week period.A .03 cent fine will be charged each day.Printing from the Internet may not be done withoutapproval of the Media Specialist.

Students have permission to use thecomputers/Internet unless parents have requestedthat they not be allowed Internet access. This can befound on the first page in the student handbookAt this time there is no way for the media specialist

and clerk to know if students have had their internetpermission form checked. A policy should be put inplace to show verification of this. Perhaps a markerof some type on their library folder.

Reference materials and periodicals may be usedonly in the Media Center.

This policy needs to be revised or amended toallow check out of older reference books that arenot part of the new collection and to determinecheck out time. Other schools allow check out for2 days.

Students will be notified of overdue books.Books damaged or lost are the responsibility of

the student.No food or beverages should be brought intothe Media Center.

The needs of the Woodbine Elementary MediaCenter are based on knowledge of thecurriculum and of the existing collection.These needs are given first consideration in

the selection of materials used to enhancethe classroom curriculum.In the school media center handbook, itshould state that the media specialist be partof grade level meetings to stay informed of needed materials and to stay familiar withcurriculum standards.

The Camden County Board of Education abides bythe Copyright Law of the United States andprohibits copying or use of copyrighted materialsnot specifically permitted or exempted by thecopyright law by employees of the system. The

Board places liability for willful infringement uponthe person making or requesting a copy or usingthe materials and designates the school librarymedia specialist and the system media contactperson as disseminators of copyright informationfor each school and the system respectively.Guidelines are available as needed in each schoollibrary media center.

Not only should the library have guidelinesfor copyright laws, but it should be posted onthe network for teachers to have easy access.This could be done with the entire media

handbook. In reference to copying materials,guidelines could also be posted in the copyroom.

All non-school owned media shall beevaluated by the same criteria as in selectionfor purchase before being used in theclassroom. Such materials and media, when

utilized in the instructional program byteachers, students, or guest presenters shallbe supportive of the adopted curriculum forthe course being taught and shall be includedin the teacher’s daily lesson plan. The use of

all materials shall be in compliance withcurrent copyright laws.

Gifts are always appreciated. Donatedmaterials will be evaluated by the MediaSpecialist and placed in the appropriatesection. Donations can also be made to

classroom libraries as well.

Each media center should have a handbook

containing information and policies. At thebeginning of the school year, some policieswould need to be reviewed. The handbookshould be available on the network for easy

access. This is not done at our school at thistime.
