3 Installation

3.1 Compatibility / Requirements

Attention Systems with Mass Spectrometry support have special requirements. For a compatibility matrix of supported hardware, Xcalibur, Chromeleon, and Windows versions, please refer to the “MS Software Configurations…” document provided in the “Additional Documents” folder on the Service Release DVD.

3.1.1 Backward and Forward Compatibility

When developing new versions of Chromeleon, Dionex attempt to always maintain “backward compatibility”, i.e., any data created with previous Chromeleon versions are readable with the new version and all calculations provide identical results. However, in rare cases, software issues may be discovered, which, if fixed, affect backward compatibility.

Introduction of new features sometimes require that the data formats are changed. In these cases, data created with Chromeleon 6.80 might not be readable with previous versions. In other words, “forward compatibility” cannot be guaranteed – this is quite natural in software development.

Backward and forward compatibility issues known in this Service Release are summarized in the following sections.

3.1.1.1 Backward Compatibility Issues

There are no changes in this Service Release that affect backward compatibility.

3.1.1.2 Forward Compatibility Issues

Dionex RS detectors (supported since 6.80 SR6) use a new data format that can be read only by Chromeleon versions 6.80 SR6 or later.

The Agilent 7890A GC driver uses a new Server Configuration format that can be read only by Chromeleon versions 6.80 SR7 or later.

3.1.3 Operating System Requirements

Chromeleon is not compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows.

About virtualization (running Chromeleon on virtual machines):

o Virtualization techniques are usually not fully compatible with real-time operations and usage of multiple communication ports, which are essential for instrument control. For this reason, the Chromeleon Server cannot (reliably) run on virtual machines. Communication with the instruments may not be established at all, or communication problems are likely to occur.

o The Chromeleon Client usually works in virtual machines; however, this is not validated by Dionex.

3.1.3.1 Microsoft® Windows® 2000™

CM 6.80 SR7 will NOT install on SP2 of Windows 2000.

3.3 “Dionex Templates” directory

The setup will create a locked folder named “Dionex Templates” on the home Datasource of the system. Typically, this Datasource is named <PC_name>_local. The template folder contains directories for Chromeleon IC Application Templates, Panels, and Reports. The Panels directory is grouped according to the target devices, such as, Dionex_IC, Dionex_LC, GC, LC_MS, etc. These panels serve as masters to adapt and create new panels for the installation.

Attention To avoid problems, keep the “Dionex Templates” folder locked. - Do not delete or move any items from the “Dionex Templates” directory. - Do not modify files in the “Dionex Templates” directory. Instead, copy the desired items to other directories and modify the copies. - Do not store any personal data (including panels or reports) in this directory, because they may be deleted without warning during future upgrades.

Note Previously, a copy of the “Dionex Templates” folder was available in the Datasource on the SP CD. This is not the case anymore. However, installing the Service Release will still update the content of the Dionex Templates folder on your local Datasource.

3.4 Firewall Exemptions Needed in Windows XP SP2 and SP3

With Service Pack 2, Microsoft introduced a firewall in Windows XP. To operate Chromeleon with this firewall, a few exceptions must be defined in certain scenarios.

For details, please refer to topic "Chromeleon and Windows Firewall" in the Chromeleon Online Help.

3.5 Troubleshooting

The “Readme.html” file on the DVD contains a troubleshooting section describing a few known but rare installation issues.

4 Appendix

4.1 General Information about Service Releases, Release Notes, and Online Help

4.1.1 Service Releases

Service Releases (SR) contain the setup package with all the files of the Main Release plus the changed files of all previous service packs, service releases, and driver updates. Thus, with a Service Release, it is no longer necessary to install the Main Release first.

4.1.2 Release Notes

The Release Notes describe the new features and improvements of the latest Service Release only. For information on extensions and enhancements in previous Chromeleon releases, please refer to the Release Notes of the respective Chromeleon release.

4.1.3 Online Help

Note The Release Notes may contain last minute information that could not be captured in the Online Help or takes priority over the Online Help.

In general, new features and drivers that are introduced in Service Packs / Service Releases are described in the updated Online Help that is distributed with the Service Pack / Service Release. However, the Online Help is only updated for the latest Chromeleon version. Users of previous versions can find the latest version of the English Chromeleon Online Help on the Service Pack / Service Release DVD (file “Additional Documents\Chromeleon 6.80 SR7 - Online Help.CHM”).
